Ep 113The Rafay Family Murders Part 2

Part 2 of the Rafay Family Murders. Part 1 ended with Sebastian and Atif unknowingly under surveillance in Canada. The Canadian Royal Mounted Police realized they had one choice if they were going to get Sebastian and Atif for the murders of Sultana, Tariq, and Basma Rafay: a police tactic so controversial it's outlawed in both the UK and the US: the Mr. Big Technique. Ep 112The Rafay Family Murders Part 1

It was July 13, 1993. Just after 2 AM, a call came into 911 from a residence in the Somerset area of Bellevue, Washington asking for an ambulance. The caller said there'd been some type of break in, and that he thought his friend's parents were dead. The caller was 19 year old Sebastian Burns, and the friend he mentioned was 18 year old Atif Rafay. They’d been best friends since high school, and he and Sebastian were visiting his parents in Bellevue during the summer break. They’d been there for 5 days when this happened. They came home that night to find Atif's entire family murdered. A triple murder is not something often seen in Bellevue, and tips started pouring in from law enforcement agencies suggesting the murder might have been committed by religious extremists. But investigators only had eyes for Sebastian and Atif. This episode is sponsored by: Better Help If you want to live a more empowered life, therapy can get you there. Ep 111The Murder of Connie Dabate

It was two days before Christmas, 2015, when tragedy struck the Dabate house. Police were called to the scene to find 39 year old Rick Dabate lying on the floor in the kitchen, zip tied to a folding chair, surrounded by blood smears but alive. His wife Connie wasn't so lucky. Her body was found in the basement, killed by two gunshot wounds. Rick was able to tell police that this had all been the work of a masked intruder. He hadn't been able to get a good look at the intruder's face, and the only description police had to go on was that the intruder had a voice like Vin Diesel. Ep 110The Austin Servant Girl Murders

December 30, 1884 was the beginning of a nightmare in Austin, Texas when 25 year old Mollie Smith was murdered in the middle of the night, in her bed by an unknown intruder. Over the next 12 months, there would be 7 more murders almost exactly like it. All in the middle of the night, all shockingly violent. This was completely unprecedented, and quite possibly the first serial killer in the United States. Ep 109The Case of Clark Rockefeller

Sandra Boss was figuratively and literally a Boss. She had an undergraduate degree from Stanford, an MBA from Harvard, and now worked as an executive in New York City making $2 million dollars a year. She was respected. She was brilliant. And she was in love. Lucky for her, that love just so happened to be with a Clark Rockefeller, yes of those Rockefellers: one of the most iconic names in American history. So what if he didn't have a penny to his name? So what if he didn't have any form of identification? One friend even jokingly asked Sandra "How do you know he's really Clark Rockefeller and not some ax murderer on the lam?" Sandra insisted she knew him best, but it would turn out that her friend wasn't so far off from the truth. Her husband Keith arrived home to find her missing, and the only trace of her was her cell phone lying in the ground about a mile away from their house with her headphones and several of her blond hairs lying on top. Ep 103The Case Against Ryan Ferguson

On the night of Halloween, 2001, Kent Heitholt, was murdered. A witness was able to create a composite sketch with police and in late 2003, the Columbia Tribune ran an article on the murder and included the composite sketch. A young man named Charles Erickson saw that sketch and thought he recognized the person. He thought it looked a lot like himself. The problem was, Charles could not remember the night of Halloween 2001. He'd blacked out, and all he knew was that he'd been at a bar near the crime scene. Charles became obsessed with this case, convinced that he was involved in the murder. And if he was involved, then so was the guy that had given him a ride home that night: his friend, Ryan Ferguson. Ep 100The Case Against Richard Glossip

It's our 100th episode!!!! For this very special episode, we are re-doing episode 1 - the Questionable Case of Richard Glossip. Kristin tells Mogab the story of Richard Glossip, who is on death row in Oklahoma for hiring Justin Sneed to kill his boss, Barry Van Treese. His conviction Is based almost solely on Sneed's word, with no good evidence connecting him to this crime. How did the word of an accomplice carry enough weight to secure a death penalty conviction? So much has happened with this case, so much new information has been uncovered, so we are so excited to be re-doing this episode (Mogab double checked that she was not recording through her air pods this time!) Ep 98The Watcher

It's SPOOOOKY season, y'all! I've been saving this one up for our Halloween episode, and Mogab was thoroughly creeped out so job well done! It was June of 2014, and Derek and Maria Broaddus were living the American dream: they had just closed on their dream home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey for $1.4 million. They loved everything about this house, and couldn’t wait to move in with their 3 young kids. But their dream became their nightmare when anonymous, threatening letters started showing up at the house, signed by someone calling themselves "The Watcher." The Watcher said it was their job - nay, their OBSESSION - to watch 657 Boulevard, just as their father did before them, and their grandfather before that. The Watcher referred to their kids as "young blood" and asked if they'd discovered what was hidden in the walls. And there was nothing the Broadduses could do to stop the letters from coming. It appeared to be a suicide, but as police spoke with Sarah's friends, the possibility that she'd run off to Canada seemed to be likely. It wasn't until a big break in the case that police realized things were much more sinister than that. Sources: NJ.COM | Family searching for Sarah Stern found her Suspected Killer’s phone. The Novack Murders

In the 1960's, Ben and Bernice Novack were Miami Beach royalty. They were the owners of the Fountainbleu hotel, the hottest spot on Miami beach, known for it's old Hollywood glamour style. Everyone from JFK to the Rat Pack stayed there, and it was the place to be. The Novacks lived in the Penthouse Suite with their son, Ben Jr., until like all good things, the era came to an end in the 70's when the hotel went bankrupt. By 2009, Bernice was widowed and living a quiet life, while her son, Ben, found success in the hospitality industry. Then, in April of 2009, Bernice was found dead in her home at 86 years old. It appeared she had slipped getting out of her car and then stumbled into her house, where she died. Police and the medical examiner ruled her death accidental. It's unlikely that anyone would have ever looked twice at Bernice's death if not for what happened just three months later, when her now 53 year old son, Ben, was found dead in his hotel room. Ep 83The Kidnapping of Denise Huskins

We're so excited to be back! This week, we're talking about the kidnapping of Denise Huskins. In the middle of the night on March 22, 2015, a group of broke into the home of Aaron Quinn and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. Aaron's story involved kidnappers wearing wet suits who played pre-recorded messages and wanted very little ransom for Denise's return. His story seemed so unbelievable to police, who were convinced early on that Aaron had done something to Denise. When that seemed unlikely, they formed a new theory: that Denise had never been kidnapped, and she was actually the real life Gone Girl. Support our sponsor! Ep 79The Murder of Larry McNabney Part 1

It was late 2001, and ads for Larry McNabney’s personal injury law firm in Sacramento were running constantly, and he always ended the ads with the same sign off - I’m Larry McNabney. Call Me. Only, people had been trying to call him, and no one had been able to speak to him for months. They might be able to get a hold of his wife and office manager, Elisa McNabney, or the office assistants, Ginger Miller and Sarah Dutra, but they would just always say that Larry was in rehab for his alcoholism or on vacation at a spa. But after several months went by and Larry still hadn’t returned to his law office, his friends and family started to worry. They realized that the last time anyone had actually seen him was while he was in Southern California for a horse show. But no one that was there could remember the details of their last encounter with Larry because that horse show had been on September 11, 2001, the day the World Trade Center was attacked in New York. Everyone was so focused on the news, and it was such a chaotic and confusing time, that no one could remember the details of that day, which made investigating his disappearance really tough. Because the truth is, Larry McNabney wasn’t in rehab, and he wasn’t on vacation or at a spa. Larry was dead. This is the murder of Larry McNabney. Support our sponsors! Ep 78The Murder of Deana Wild

When Deana Wild fell to her death off a cliff in Big Sur, California, authorities assumed this was a tragic accident. She was driving through Big Sur with a couple she lived with, Billie Joe and Virginia McGinnis, who said that she stumbled due to the high heels she was wearing on the cliff's edge. It's not uncommon for people to fall, they see it about once a month. The investigation was wrapped up quickly and Deana's mother Bobbie struggled to move on. When the burial insurance company wouldn't pay out to help with Deana's funeral costs, she asked for the help of a lawyer she knew, Steve Keeney. Keeney asked around, and as he dug into Deana's death and the McGinnis's background, he uncovered a web of lies, betrayal, and murder that spanned decades. Ep 76The Murder of Sherri Rasmussen

John Ruetten was absolutely in love with his new bride, Sherri Rasmussen. She was the total package: beautiful, fun to be with, and very smart. At 29, she was already the director of nursing at the hospital she worked at in Van Nuys, California, and she even lectured internationally on critical care nursing. But it all came to a sudden end when John arrived at their townhome just a few months after they'd gotten married to find her dead on the living room floor. He had no idea who could have done this, and told detectives neither of them had any enemies, anyone that would have wanted to hurt them. But Sherri's father, Nels, disagreed. Detectives were certain that this had been a burglary gone wrong, and as they explained that to Nels, he asked them: "Have you checked out John's ex-girlfriend? The lady cop?" John's ex was a police officer named Stephanie Lazarus, and according to Nels, she'd had plenty of run-ins with Sherri that made Nels uneasy. But no one was listening to him. RE-RELEASE: Anna Delvey - The SoHo Con Artist

Hi everyone! Mogab was sick this week, and so unfortunately we do not have a new episode for you all. We did not want to leave you hanging, though, so we decided it was a great time to re-release our episode on Anna Delvey! This week, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Anna Delvy - one of the greatest con artists of our generation, which is saying a lot since Millennials can claim both Billy McFarland from Fyre Fest and Elizabeth Holmes from Theranos. Everyone loves a good scam story. And this is definitely a good scam story. So good, in fact, that Shonda Rhimes is making a show with Netflix about Anna Delvy: the German heiress trying to open her Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good (or something like that...). She lives in New York's fanciest hotels, is at all the best parties, and loves to tip big and take lavish trips with her friends. But weird things keep happening: her credit cards keep getting declined, or she's having trouble tapping into her trust fund, so her friends start covering for her. Only, she's not a German heiress. And she doesn't actually have any money. So how did she manage to con all her friends Into funding this lifestyle she wanted so badly? I want to point people towards the National Center for Victims of Crime, who have a Financial Crime Resource Center. They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide called Taking Action: An Advocate’s Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial Fraud This guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery. When Sharon Cave got a call that her 21 year old daughter, Jennifer, had not shown up to work, she was worried. Jennifer lived about 3 hours away in Austin, Texas, and there wasn't much Sharon could do except call around to all of Jennifer's friends, hospitals, even morgues. When she still hadn't been found by the next day, Sharon and her boyfriend, Jim Sedwick, decided to make the drive to Austin. Ep 65The Truth Behind Lucky

Alice Sebold is best known for her best selling novel, The Lovely Bones, but that wasn't her first book. A few years before, Alice wrote a memoir titled Lucky that chronicled a brutal rape she experienced in 1981, when she was 18. She wrote about identifying the man that raped her, testifying against him in court, and dealing with the trauma of being raped. In 2019, the film rights to Lucky were purchased and the project was green lit. But as producer Tim Mucciante read through the script and the memoir, he started seeing discrepancies that didn't sit right with him, especially when it came to the conviction of the rapist, Anthony Broadwater.Sources: ArticlesThe New York Times | He Was Convicted of Raping Alice Sebold. Ep 64The Survival Story of Tania Head

In 2003, the survivors of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 were still attempting to recover from the trauma they endured that day. One of the only places to go for support was a Yahoo chat room for 9/11 survivors and family members that lost loved ones in the attacks. One of the survivors in the group, Tania Head, saw the need for survivors to have their own group, one where they could talk freely about the details of that horrific day without the fear of offending anyone. She created a group just for survivors, and it was then that she finally felt comfortable sharing her own story. Tania had been on the 96th floor of the South Tower the day the planes hit, and her journey to survival was so incredible, so harrowing, that it left the others in the group at a loss for words. They admired her so much for what she'd gone through, and the strength she showed. Eventually, Tania helped to form the World Trade Center Survivors Network, and was elected president. She gave guided tours of ground zero, where she would share her story with visitors. No one knew that Tania Head was hiding a secret.
