What’s the lens through which all prophecy must be viewed? What’s the thread woven through every prophetic passage? The simple answer is Jesus. Revelation 19:10 says it plainly: “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” The first prophecy in the Bible is about Jesus, which is that the seed of the woman will crush the serpent’s head. The final prophecy in Revelation 22 is Jesus saying, “I am coming quickly.” And all the prophecies in between are focused on Him. Even the Rapture isn’t just an event we’re waiting for—it’s a Person we’re waiting for. The Lord Himself will descend from Heaven. If our study of prophecy doesn’t draw us closer to Jesus, we need to pause and examine our hearts. Some people hate it—though I think some who hate it may not even know exactly what it is. But dispensationalism is simply a way to view the whole Bible, a framework for understanding God’s entire prophetic program. The word comes from the Greek oikonomia, meaning the management of a household. God is managing His household—this world—according to His will in various stages throughout history. There are two essentials to dispensationalism: consistent literal interpretation of Scripture, and a consistent distinction between Israel and the Church. If you interpret the Bible literally, you’ll see that God has a distinct plan for Israel and a distinct plan for the Church. The Church hasn’t replaced Israel. Will we know everything when we get there? No—knowing everything would make us omniscient, which is only true of God. We’ll always be finite, but our capacity for learning will be exponentially enhanced. Will we get bored? Absolutely not. God isn’t boring, so Heaven won’t be boring. We’ll constantly be learning more about our infinite God, His New Creation, and one another. Can people in Heaven see what’s happening on earth? The Bible gives hints that they’re aware of at least some events—the martyrs in Revelation 6 know their persecutors are still alive, and Heaven rejoices over Babylon’s destruction. And yes, I believe there will be time in Heaven—we’ll still be finite creatures who see things happen in succession. Today we look at two important aspects of the New Jerusalem: the size and shape of the city, and the sanctity of it—who’s going to be there and who’s not. The city is a massive cube—1,400 to 1,500 miles in length, width, and height. The Tabernacle had a Holy of Holies that was a 15-foot cube; while Solomon’s Temple had one that was a 30-foot cube. But the New Jerusalem is a 1,500-mile cube! That is a massive Holy of Holies! Picture a map of the United States: from Minneapolis to Houston to Miami to Boston—that’s just the footprint. Randy Alcorn calculates nearly 2 million square miles on the ground level alone, which is 40 times bigger than England, with potentially 600,000 stories. It’s a colossal cube the size of a continent. That is the place Jesus is preparing for us.Then Hebrews 12 tells us who will be there: myriads of angels, the general assembly and Church of the Firstborn (New Testament saints), the spirits of righteous men made perfect (Old Testament saints and Tribulation saints), God Himself, and Jesus. But Revelation 21 and 22 also tells us who won’t be there: the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and liars—those whose settled, unrepentant lifestyle is characterized by such sins. The most important question is this: Will you be there? But one very important factor is being overlooked in all the calculus and strategy: Iran’s Shiite apocalyptic theology and ideology. This is what drives the Iranian regime. This is their lens through which they view the world. Iran’s government is an Islamic theocracy built on the doctrine of Velāyat-e Faqīh (Persian: ولایت فقیه)—the guardianship of the Islamic jurist—developed by Ayatollah Khomeini as part of the 1979 revolution. Behind it all is the belief that clerics must pave the way for the return of the Mahdi, the 12th Imam, their messianic figure. Iran’s clerical leadership believes the Mahdi’s return will be hastened by global destruction and war. They call what’s happening now “preparing the ground.” They believe we’re in the “era of emergence.” Joel Rosenberg describes the regime as “an apocalyptic, genocidal death cult.” We don’t know what will happen in the current crisis, but we know where it’s ultimately headed. A showdown between Iran and Israel was prophesied 2,600 years ago by Ezekiel.
