Ep 895S8 Ep895: Asylum Seekers, Undocumented Immigrants, and the Gospel

"About 5% of what you see on the news reflects the reality of what’s going on at the border,” says pastor John Garland, who’s been living out the gospel at the border. In this fascinating conversation, Dr. Poe Hays and John Garland walk us through what it means to be a Christian and live out the kingdom of God toward a marginalized and misunderstood group of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. And how the Psalms are a Spirit-inspired guide to trauma therapy. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 894S8 Ep894: A Theology of Disability: Dr. Brian Brock

Dr. Brian Brock is a Christian ethicist and theologian who has become one of the leading experts in disability theology. What does it mean, theologically, to be dissabled? How much of the able-bodied assumptions about disability are misinformed and, potentially, dehumanizing? How do the Christian doctrines of creation, fall, redemption, and resurrection inform our understanding of disabilities? And what would it look like for the church to embody a robust Christian theology of disability? Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 892S8 Ep892: I Think I Might Be a Christian Anarchist!? Jay Newman

What is Christian Anarchy? I sat down with my good friend, fellow Dodger’s fan, and BBQ expert Jay Newman to talk about this. He’s not only persuaded by Christian anarchy, but he’s convinced that I’m one too. We dive deep into the basics of Christian anarchy and how Christians should posture themselves in light of partisan politics and the government as a whole. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 891S8 Ep891: Kids and COVID, Platforming Detransitioners, Women in Leadership, NT Wright vs. John Piper: Q&A

My Patreon supporters sent me a ton of questions to respond to, so here’s my attempt! Is it inconsistent for homeschool parents to say “kids need to go back to school” during COVID, then they are not...in school. Does Gen 2 really give us a definition for marriage? What do I think of Milo Yiannopolos? Would I have have him on the show? What do I think of NT Wright and John Piper’s recent articles? Should we read books or listen to music by Christian leaders who have fallen into sin? Why have I had on the show so many detransitioners? Doesn’t this skew the conversation? What are my thoughts on women in leadership and Beth Allison Barr’s book The Making of Biblical Womanhood? And much more! Learn more about your ad choices. Her latest book Holier Than Thou, releases on Aug. 17, 2021 and talks about how God is not like us, is different, is holy, and that’s exactly what makes Him trustworthy. In this conversation, we talk about God’s holiness and character, human sexuality, and Jackie’s personal life as a high profile Christian influencer. Ep 887S8 Ep887: Polyamory, Sex w/ Robots, Procreation, & the Meaning of Marriage: Andrew Bunt

Yup, we talk about all of that. Not sure I need to explain more than what’s in the title. Our conversation is actually quite theological and it doesn’t shy away from the tough questions, the embarrassing questions, and the questions you didn’t know you had until you listened to this episode. Ep 886S8 Ep886: Sex, Gender, and the Anthropology of Trans* Identities: Dr. Abigail Favale

Abigail and I talk about all things related to gender, postmodern feminism, and the ontology of trans* identities. We discuss the meaning of sex and gender, the relationship between body and soul, the possibility of an intersex condition of the brain, whether brains are male and female, intersex conditions, gender stereotypes, and how all of this relatest to the anthropological understnading of trans* experiences. Dr. Favale is dean of the College of Humanities and Associate Professor of English at George Fox University. She graduated from George Fox University with a philosophy degree in 2005, and went on to complete her doctorate at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where her dissertation was granted the Samuel Rutherford Prize for the most distinguished thesis in English literature. Dr. Favale is an active writer in multiple genres. Her literary criticism has appeared in various academic journals and essay collections. In 2017, she was awarded the J.F. Powers Prize for Short Fiction. A lifelong Christian, Favale entered the Catholic Church in 2014, and her memoir about this transition, Into the Deep, is forthcoming from Cascade Books. Back by popular demand! John C. Bivona is an infectious disease expert and he gives us an update on all things pandemic related. The efficacy of vaccines, what we know and don’t know, should kids get vaccinated, are you immune if you’ve already had Covid, whether Covid was leaked from the Wuhan lab, what we know about the Delta variant (and other variants), vaccine hesitancy, and much more. John is a Senior Biosafety Officer for The University of Chicago – Howard T. Ep 884S8 Ep884: Facing Burnout in a Post-Covid Church: Dan White Jr

In this episode, I talk to Dan White about what it’s like burning out of ministry and how to cultivate healthier rhythms to prevent this from happening (again). Part of the problem is the internet and social media. Our prefrontal contexes never rest! We’re constantly bombarded with stuff to process. And COVID only exacerbated this problem. During COVID, many churches played into the consumeristic mindset of people by producing MORE content, more sermons, more stuff for people to consume. But now that the COVID dust has settled, many people aren’t coming back to church. Why is this? How can we “get people back?” Or--is that even the right question to ask? Dan has planted and pastored in rural, suburban, and urban churches for the last 20+ years. Currently, Dan and Tonya are in the starting and building stage of opening The Kineo Renewal and Retreat Center in Puerto Rico. Dan White Jr is a church planting strategist with the V3 Movement, coaching cohorts through an 18-month missional training system. Dan has coached over 200 new innovative faith communities across the country. He co-founded the Praxis Gathering, a yearly conference that equips practitioners in the hands-on work of following Jesus deeper into our local places. Dan graduated with his B.A. in Counseling from Davis College and his M.A. in theology from Capital Seminary and is the author of Church as Movement and Love Over Fear. We also talk about different theological traditions, political division, patriotism vs. nationalism, and A.J.’s transition to pastor an Anglican church. AJ Sherrill (DMin, Fuller Theological Seminary) has more than twenty years of experience as a pastor, including as lead pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is now lead pastor at St. Peter's Church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Ep 882S8 Ep882: Another Perspective on Systemic Racism, White Privilege, and CRT: Samuel Sey

Samuel Sey is a Ghanian-Canadian who lives in outside of Toronto. He’s written extensively on race, racial justice, abortion, critical race theory, and other issues related to faith and culture. He challenges us with a perspective on race that’s different from what you will hear on most mainstream media outlets. He believes that critical race theory is profoundly problematic, that unequal outcomes does not necessarily mean there’s injustice in the system, that systemic racism is largely untrue, and that we should think the best of other people before we judge their actions as racist. Ep 880S8 Ep880: #880 - A Transman’s Unexpected Thoughts on Trans* Related Issues: Scott Newgent

Scott is a fully transitioned 48 year old FtM transman with 3 teenage kids, and he’s pretty fired up about how the medical industry has failed our trans*-identified kids. Scott holds some pretty unpredictable views. Though he’s a transman, he believes that trans*-identified kids are in no position to transition, and that parents of trans* kids should not use their pronouns or do anything that would encourage their transition. In fact, Scott is very critical of several aspects of trans* ideologies and is passionate about the truth of human nature and the medical pros and cons about transitioning. Scott is the founder and president of Trans Rational Educational Voices (https://www.trevoices.com), an organization aimed at helping to stop medical transitioning for trans* identified kids (among other things). Street Hymns is an Christian, artist, musician, leader, and a member an elite Battle Rap team called The IV Horseman. Ep 876S8 Ep876: Same-Sex Attracted, Sexually Pure, and...Unfit for Ministry? Dr. Greg Johnson

Greg grew up as a gay atheist in DC area and converted to Christianity at UVA in 1990. He has a PhD in historical theology and serves as the lead pastor of Memorial Presbyterian Church (PCA) in St. Louis. He’s also the author of the forthcoming book, Still Time to Care: What We Can Learn from the Church Failed Attempt to Cure Homosexuality (Zondervan, Sept 2021). Greg is 49 years old and has never touched another human in a romantic way, and yet he has been brought up on charges for being unfit to be a pastor for issues related to sexualtiy by some people in his Presbyterian denomination. This conversation will be difficult to comprehend for some of you, but it’s important to understand how some fundamentalist Christians think. We also talk about the history of evangelical approaches to homosexuality and the role that the Ex-gay movement has played in this trajectory. Oh, and we also bring up C.S. Lewis’ struggle with Sadomasochism (think: 50 Shades of Grey). Anyway, lots of interesting stuff in this episode! Ep 874S8 Ep874: Race, Multiethnic Churches, and Slavery in the Bible: Dr. Dennis Edwards

In this invigorating conversation, Dr. Edwards discusses his views on race in the church, the pros and cons of how the church has handled this topic over the last year, and his mixed views on multi-ethnic churches. We then get into a discussion about slavery in the Bible and answer some difficult questions about a difficult topic. Dr. Edwards has long been inspired with a hunger to understand scripture. Growing up in NYC, Dr. Edwards attended a storefront church whose pastor was an earnest, faithful, and dedicated spiritual leader. After attending seminary, his desire to better understand scripture continued. Ep 870870: Another Take on the Pronoun Debate: Dr. Julie Maxwell

Should Christians use a trans* identified person’s chosen pronouns (i.e. ones that don’t align with their biological sex)? I (Preston) have argued for “pronoun hospitality,” that Christians should use a person’s pronouns. And Julie generally agrees with this perspective, but she believes that it’s sometimes better for the long term well-being for trans* identified children and adolescents when their parents don’t use their chosen pronouns. In case you didn’t know, this is super controversial! Which is why we need to have this conversation. In this episode, I talk with Julie about her perspective, evidence for and against it, and various other things related to the discussion about how to best treat trans*-identified children and teens. Julie is a licensed pediatrician in the U.K. and has written extensively about Gender Dysphoria and trans* identities. Ep 868868: Addressing Moral Arguments Against Christianity: Dr. Rebecca McLaughlin

Dr. McLaughlin has a Ph.D. in English Literature from Cambridge University (U.K.) and has become a premier apologist for a new generation. Her book Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World’s Largest Religion won Christianity Today’s book award for 2020 and her latest book The Secular Creed is bound to stir things up. In this episode, we talk about how most of the challenges to Christianity are more ethical in nature. People think Christianity can’t be true in light of its history of racism, slavery, misogyny, and homophobia--among other things. Ep 865865: One of the Most Influential Persons in My Life: Bert Suluavale

I first met Bert in Fall 1997 when I transferred in as a Junior at The Master’s College (now University). Bert was one of my roomates and we quickly began a mentoring friendship. For the next 3-4 years, Bert poured into and helped lay some vital spiritual foundations in my life. He has been, quite simply, one the most influential persons in my life. But Bert has his own tumultuous story, which involved getting saved out of a gang culture and thrust into the Christian spotlight as a singer, preacher, Chaplain, and mentor to many. After several years of major “Christian success,” he fell back into his old ways, even darker than before, and ultimately ended up in jail. He’s been slowly and faithfully building back his faith again, without needing the stage to validate his Christian worth. Ep 853853: Rethinking the War on Drugs: Christina Dent

It makes sense. Illegal drugs should be criminalized. Period. The harsher a society is on drug use and drug dealing, the fewer problems it will have. Right? Not necessarily. As long as there are buyers, there will be producers. And as long as people experience pain and trauma, they will seek ways to numb it. Christina Dent is a politically conservative Christian who supported criminalizing drugs until she became a foster parent and saw the negative effects up close. Ep 852852: Have We Neglected the Ascension of Christ? Dr. Patrick Schreiner

Oftentimes, we don’t know what to do with the ascension. I mean, we believe in it, but we don’t often appreciate the theological necessity of it. Get your Bible’s out for this episode, because Patrick and I dance through various passages of Scripture to reconstruct the lost doctrine of the ascension of Christ. Ep 851851: Disagreeing without Dividing the Church: Dr. Tim Muehlhoff

Is it possible for Christians to maintain unity when they are so divided over hot-button issues like politics, race, and points of doctrine? Do you have to sacrifice conviction for the sake of unity? Is it possible for a zealous Trump-supporter and an ardent Biden-supporter to worship together in the same church without thinking the other person is evil? There is no better person to help us navigate these issues than Dr. Tim Muehlhoff. The answer, of course--if you read the Bible--is yes. But why are so many Christians resistant to this question? (Pssst...it’s because we’re often shaped more by American political tribal identities than the actual Bible.) We also wrestle with questions like: What age will we be in the resurrection?
