Ep 786786: #786 - Pride Parades, Vaccines, Corporal Punishment, and More

Preston is working through a stack of questions in this Q & A podcast. Would he ever participate in a pride parade? How should gay/SSA Christians build healthy relationships with people of the same sex? What are his thoughts on Vaccines? His thoughts on Robert Gagnon’s approach to same-sex sexuality/marriage? The value of reading books vs. blogs vs. periodicals? What’s the meaning of “the worm shall not die” (Mark 9:48)? How does the parable of the rich man and Lazarus fit in with the Annihilation view of hell? Is corporal punishment (i.e. spanking) biblical? My thoughts on attending a UMC church that’s not taking a clear stance on marriage. Ep 785785: #785 - Rethinking Church: A Conversation with Dr. John Whittaker

Preston sits down with his good friend and fellow Boise resident John Whittaker to talk about all things related to the church. Church structure, the role of the Sunday gathering, how preaching needs to change, the heightened need for discipleship, and why the LDS church might be on to something when it comes to Ecclesiology. John Whittaker is a preacher, teacher and pastor. He holds theology and ministry degrees from Boise Bible College, Cincinnati Bible Seminary, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. John has been serving in ministry for 30 years. He has served as a Professor of Preaching and New Testament at Boise Bible College for 19 years. He has also helped plant a church in Kuna, Idaho, where he preached for 11 years, served for 4 years as one of the teaching and campus pastors at The Pursuit, taught classes for Eternity Bible College and preached in various places around the country and the world. He’s the founder of Bible in Life online discipleship ministry at johnwhittaker.net When he’s not preaching or teaching, you can find him at a local coffee shop meeting with and encouraging other local ministers, hanging out at home with wife and partner in ministry, Louise, his closest friend for 30 years, or throwing the ball for his dogs. He loves Mexican food, a quiet day in the woods, his family … but most of all John loves to help people see how God’s word speaks to their life and his greatest thrill in life is to see people come alive to the joy of walking with God honestly, humbly, and transformationally. Ep 1305#784 - Still a Christian: A Conversation with Justin Brierley

Justin Brierley is the host of the very popular radio show (and podcast) Unbelievable. He’s interviewed many scholars, theologians, apologists, and atheists. He’s also hosted many debates between Christians and non-Christians--and he’s still a Christian. In this show, Preston and Justin talk about Christianity, defending the fact, the best arguments against Christianity, the problem of evil, atheism, and many other things related to Justin’s very interesting space in Christianity. Justin Brierley presents Premier Christian Radio's flagship apologetics and theology debate programme Unbelievable? every Saturday at 2.30pm. The show brings Christians and non-Christians together for dialogue and is also a popular podcast which has produced an annual evangelism and apologetics conference. Justin's book Unbelievable? Why, after ten years of talking with atheists, I'm still a Christian (SPCK) is available now www.unbelievablebook.co.uk. Justin was the editor of Premier Christianity magazine from 2014 - 2018. Justin enjoys creating conversations that matter and tries to make programmes and write articles that bring theology and apologetics (defence of the faith) into the real world. While at school Justin once played the stepson of CS Lewis (one of his theological heroes) in a professional stage play. After school he went on to study PPE at Oxford University where he continued to be involved in amateur dramatics. Justin has a wonderful wife called Lucy who is the minister of a church in Surrey. They have four amazing children too. Ep 783783: #783 - Trinitarianism Versus Unitarianism? A Conversation with Chris Date and Sam Adams

In this different sort of podcast, Preston moderates a discussion between Chris Date (Trinitarian) and Sam Adams (Unitarian) about whether God is three in one or just one. Sam argues that there’s one God and Jesus and the Spirit are not that God, while Chris Date believes that God is Trinity--three persons of one divine essence. And both argue from the text of Scripture for their view. Sam Adams is a born and raised Biblical Unitarian but has attended trinitarian evangelical churches for the last 12 years. He has a bachelors degree from Cornell University and a masters degree from Harvard University both in biostatistics. He works in data science and artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry. He has published many peer reviewed articles on subjects completely unrelated to theology. He is a highly-engaged and self-educated lay person on the topics of Unitarianism, Trinitarianism, church history, and related theological subjects. While he has never been called a world expert in anything, he enjoys having meaningful discussions on the topic of Christology and helping bridge together Christians across what seems like an unbridgeable gulf. You can see more of his conversation on this topic on his youtube channel "transfigured" which through honest dialogue seeks to see Christ for who he truly is. Chris Date is a well-known evangelical Christian author, editor, blogger, podcaster, debater, and speaker. Representing a global movement known as Rethinking Hell, he specializes in the areas of Hell and Conditional Immortality. As an expert on these topics, Chris has been interviewed in such secular media outlets as the New York Times, National Geographic, and NPR. He has debated no less than the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Dr. Albert Mohler, and been interviewed for the popular One Minute Apologist video series. He helped to frame the Statement on Evangelical Conditionalism, and he is passionate about making the case for conditionalism while fostering unity among evangelical Christians on this controversial yet very important topic. Ep 779779: #779 - Is Technology Enslaving Us? Jay Kim

Preston talks with his friend Jay Kim, who’s a pastor at Vintage Church in Santa Cruz, CA, and the author of the forthcoming book Analogy Church. Jay has been rethinking how we go about using technology in church and how we can break free from being enslaved to technology. Jay and Preston also talk about the unique, post-Christian, hyper progressive context of Santa Cruz and the challenges and opportunities his church faces in this context. Jay Kim serves on staff at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, CA, overseeing leadership and teaching, and on the core leadership team of the ReGeneration Project. He also co-hosts the ReGeneration Podcast. Some of Jay's written work has been featured in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, and Relevant Magazine. He is a graduate of Fuller Seminary. Jay's first book, Analog Church, is set to release in March 2020. The book addresses the challenges and opportunities churches face in the digital age, offering a new and hopeful way forward. About Analog Church What does it mean to be an analog church in a digital age? In recent decades the digital world has taken over our society at nearly every level, and the church has increasingly followed suit—often in ways we're not fully aware of. But as even the culture at large begins to reckon with the limits of a digital world, it's time for the church to take stock. Are online churches, video venues, and brighter lights truly the future? What about the digital age's effect on discipleship, community, and the Bible? As a pastor in Silicon Valley, Jay Kim has experienced the digital church in all its splendor. In Analog Church, he grapples with the ramifications of a digital church, from our worship and experience of Christian community to the way we engage Scripture and sacrament. Could it be that in our efforts to stay relevant in our digital age, we've begun to give away the very thing that our age most desperately needs: transcendence? Could it be that the best way to reach new generations is in fact found in a more timeless path? Could it be that at its heart, the church has really been analog all along? Ep 765765: #765 - How to Raise Anti-Fragile Kids: Dr. Leonard Sax

Dr. Leonard Sax (M.D., Ph.D.) is a physician, psychologist, speaker, and best selling writer. In this episode, Preston and Dr. Sax talk about why kids are growing up much more fragile and unhealthy (mentally and physically). Part of it has to do with parents who are coddling their kids and shrinking back from establishing God-given parental authority. Lack of boundaries on screen-time (and content) also plays a significant role in the epidemic of anxiety, depression, and suicidality among kids. Sax is also a leading expert in sex and gender theories, especially as it pertains to trans* identities and experiences, something he’s written about in his latest edition of his book “Why Gender Matters” (2017). Both of these topics--kids and gender--come together and shape Sax’s concern for some disturbing things going on in the medical field regarding kids who identify as trans*. Ep 760760: #760 - Life as an Intersex Christian: Lianne Simon

Lianne was born with an intersex condition called Mixed Gonadal Dysgenesis, where some of her cells have a Y chromosome while others do not. Lianne was originally reared as a male, but later had surgery to become male. (Or, did her surgery confirm her male status that was there all along? Or both? Or neither? It’s beautifully complex…) Most of all, Lianne is an incredibly intelligent and compassionate child of God who preaches and embodies the gospel. In this conversation, we talk about many things related to intersex, gender identity, Christianity, and how the “I” relates to the LGBTQIA conversation. About Lianne's father was a dairy farmer and an engineer, her mother a nurse. She grew up in an environment filled with love and good books. A rare genetic condition gave her a pixie face and an intersex body. As a child, Lianne was so tiny and frail that her parents feared losing their half-girl son. After coming to faith in Christ, Lianne confronted her medical and gender issues. She and her husband live in the hills north of Nashville, Tennessee. Lianne is co-founder of Intersex and Faith, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help communities of faith minister to those born with a body that isn’t entirely male or female. Intersex and Faith hopes to accomplish this via education, advocacy, and support. The documentary, Stories of Intersex and Faith, examines how some people reconcile their faith with having a body that’s not entirely male or female. Their small-group curriculum is in beta testing. And they connect the parents of intersex children with those of like faith. Lianne is also an #ownvoice author of novels with intersex main characters. Ep 759759: #759 - Racism, tribalism, and prophet-poets in the evangelical church: Propaganda (Jason Petty)

It’s been said that artists are the prophets of the church. Propaganda is the embodiment of that truth. Preston sits down with Prop for the first time to discuss his journey in evangelicalism. Son of a Black Panther father, raised in a Latinx and then white neighborhood, journeying in and (sort of) out of reformed evangelicalism, and now outspoken toward the supremacy of Jesus in all things and the social-political implications of the gospel, Prop is a voice that needs to be reckoned with. After spending the first 30 minutes discussing theological anthropology and various approaches to the mind-body relationship (e.g. physicalism vs. dualism), Preston and Marc banter around about trans-related questions as they pertain to theological anthropology and why a biblical view of embodiment should reframe how we think about diet, exercise, sleep, and health. Ep 753753: #753 - A New Vision for Church: Hugh Halter

In this episode, Preston gets to know Hugh Halter, who’s done some innovative “church” plants—if we can even call them that. Preston and Hugh talk about the different kingdom projects that Hugh’s been a part of, especially his most recent project at “post commons”—a missional, kingdom-minded venture that might be the way forward in our post-Christian context. How can we integrate community-centered, kingdom-minded, for profit businesses with church planting and the gospel? Preston and Hugh explore this question in their conversation. Hugh Halter has been a leading missiologist and thought-leader within the contemporary missional church movement. He has authored 8 books, and speaks extensively around the world helping the church be less churchy.
