Ep 977S9 Ep977: Christian Universalism, asexuality, demisexuality, same-sex marriage and women in leadership, & the massive increase in trans teens.

I’ve got a fist-full of questions sent in from my Patreon supporters, some of which I answer here. Questions addressed in this public podcast: Can I make a scriptural case for Christian Universalism? What do I think about asexuality, demisexuality, graysexuality? Is the debate about same-sex marriage kind of like the debate about women in church leadership? It seems like there’s a 50/50 chance that my baby daughter will have gender dysphoria–is that true? Can I recommend any good books on sex and marriage? And will we have memories of earth in our resurrected bodies? –––––– PROMOS Save 10% on courses with Kairos Classroom using code TITR at kairosclassroom.com! –––––– Sign up with Faithful Counseling today to save 10% off of your first month at the link: faithfulcounseling.com/titr or use code TITR at faithfulcounseling.com –––––– Save 30% at SeminaryNow.com by using code TITR –––––– Support Preston Support Preston by going to patreon.com Venmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1 Connect with Preston Twitter | @PrestonSprinkle Instagram | @preston.sprinkle Youtube | Preston Sprinkle Check out Dr. Sprinkle’s website prestonsprinkle.com Stay Up to Date with the Podcast Twitter | @RawTheology Instagram | @TheologyintheRaw If you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review. www.theologyintheraw.com Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 975S9 Ep975: Psychedelics, Marijauna, and Being the Church from the Table: Debra Hirsch

I had no agenda going into this conversation, but it quickly delved into talking about psychedelics, marijauna, and how God uses some trippy things to draw people to himself. We then talk about a missional ecclesiology with the table at the center. Deb Hirsch is a speaker, church leader, and writer who has led churches in both Australia and Los Angeles. She is one of the founders of Forge Mission Training Network and is a member of the Forge America national team. She also serves as a board member for Missio Alliance and was part of the leadership team of Christian Associates, a church planting movement in Europe, North & South America. Ep 974S9 Ep974: What Is Autogynephilia? A Conversation with Danny

The theory of Autogynephilia is one of the more controversial and much neglected aspects of the trans* conversation. Some people say it doesn’t exist, while others say that most natal male trans* persons have Autogynephilia. Autogynephilia “is defined as a male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought of himself as a female.” Several scholars have done a lot of research into this phenomenon: Ray Blanchard, J. Michael Bailey, Anne Lawerance (who is a self identified autogynephilic trans* medical researcher), and several others. My conversation today is with my friend Danny, who says he experiences a kind of autogynephilia and has learn to walk in faithfulness to Jesus in the midst of it all. Ep 961S9 Ep961: Views of Hell, Christian Nationalism, Anglican Church, Enneagram, Sex and Gender: Q & A with Preston Sprinkle

My Patreon supporters sent in a ton of great questions, some of which I address on this podcast. Do I still recommend Erasing Hell in light of my change in view? What are the best resources to defend ECT, Annihilation, and Christian Universalism? Do I still like the CSB translation knowing that all the translators are complementarian? What is Christian Nationalism? How does the killing of Annanias and Saphira square with my view of nonviolence? Does studying with a commentary take away from just reading the text? Ep 957S9 Ep957: Are Orphanages Doing More Harm Than Good? Alycia Pinizzotto

Every Christian believes that orphans should be cared for. But how? Do they belong in orphanages or in families? Are orphanages a necessary way to care for orphans in a broken world? Or are they perpetuating a cycle of harm toward vulnerable and traumatized children? Alycia used to run an orphanage with her husband, but came to believe that they were not actually helping kids, so they developed a different approach to orphan care, one that helps vulnerable kids be placed in healthy families. Alycia is the CEO at Story International, an organization that serves the vulnerable of Guatemala so that we may one day see the restoration of family structures and the cycles of generational poverty broken. Story Intl. strives to see fewer kids institutionalized and more kids cared for in the context of family. They seek to empower communities and engage the local church as a new generation of Guatemalans rises up to lead their communities with unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Story’s motto is: Children belong in families, not orphanages, which is the focus of our conversation. https://www.storyintl.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/alycia-pinizzotto –––––– EVENTS Theology in the Raw Conference - Exiles in Babylon At the Theology in the Raw conference, we will be challenged to think like exiles about race, sexuality, gender, critical race theory, hell, transgender identities, climate change, creation care, American politics, and what it means to love your democratic or republican neighbor as yourself. Ep 956S9 Ep956: Neither Liberal nor Conservative–Systemic Racism, White Privilege, and the Church: Dr. Carl Ellis

Carl is a brother from another mother and I want him to adopt me as his kid. I love the way he thinks through tough issues and refuses to be stuffed into some ideological box. In this conversation, we talk about all the hard stuff in the race conversation: critical theory, systemic racism, pros and cons in multiethnic churches, the “Cold Civil War” between achievers and non-achievers in the African American community, the 400 years of collective trauma that black people experience, white privilege, whiteness, and many other things. No matter where you land on these controversial issues, I think you’ll consider Carl to be a humble, thoughtful, and seasoned voice. Dr. Carl Ellis, Jr. is Provost’s Professor of Theology and Culture, Assistant to the Chancellor, and Senior Fellow of the African American Leadership Initiative at Reformed Theological Seminary. From 1979 to 1989, Carl served as the Assistant Pastor of Forest Park Community Church in Baltimore, MD, served on faculty at Chesapeake Theological Seminary, and served as a seminar instructor for Prison Fellowship where he developed and taught “in-prison” and “in-community” seminars for inmates and community volunteers. Between 1986 and 2009, Carl served as an adjunct faculty member at the Center for Urban Theological Studies (C.U.T.S.), and as Dean of Intercultural Studies at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Carl was recently the Associate Pastor for Cultural Apologetics at New City Fellowship. Dr. Ellis studied under Francis Schaeffer at LÁbri in Hermoz sur Olon’, Switzerland, completed his MAR (Theology) at Westminster Theological Seminary, and holds a D.Phil. from Oxford Graduate School. –––––– EVENTS Theology in the Raw Conference - Exiles in Babylon At the Theology in the Raw conference, we will be challenged to think like exiles about race, sexuality, gender, critical race theory, hell, transgender identities, climate change, creation care, American politics, and what it means to love your democratic or republican neighbor as yourself. Ep 950S9 Ep950: A Christian View of Immigration: Karen Gonzalez

In this episode, I talk to Karen about all things related to immigration. What does the Bible say? How theologically/ethically important is it? How should Christians respond to undocumented immigrants? Karen Gonzalez is a speaker, writer, storyteller, and immigrant advocate, who herself immigrated from Guatemala as a child. Karen is a former public school teacher and attended Fuller Theological Seminary, where she studied theology and missiology. For the last 12 years, she has been a non-profit professional, currently working for World Relief, an organization that serves refugees and other immigrants, as the human resources director. She also has bylines inSojourners, Christianity Today, The Christian Century, and others. Karen is currently working on her second book, Beyond Welcome: Centering Immigrants in our Christian Response to Immigration (Brazos Press, October 2022). Ep 948S9 Ep948: A Complementarian Reading of the New Testament: Dr. Tom Schreiner

Complementarians believe that the Bible affirms the full equality of women and men, but that God only allows men to be elders and teachers in local churches. Dr. Tom Schreiner is one of the most well known and widely published (and respected) scholars who holds to this view. In this episode, Tom sums up his position and then responds to several counterarguments I throw at him. Tom is James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology (1997) and Associate Dean of the School of Theology. Ep 942S9 Ep942: Marriage, masculinity, platforming, weed, alcohol, pride flags, & other questions

I received a ton of questions from my Patreon supporters, many of which I answered through Patreon, but some of which I address out loud in this podcast. Questions addressed on this episode: How do you know if you’re called to marriage? What does the Bible say about masculinity and femininity? How will I handle my growing platform? Is it wrong to smoke weed? Drink alcohol? Should Christians have a problem with a public school teacher displaying a pride flag? Why do so many smart Spirit-filled Christians disagree on interpretations of Scripture? What’s the meaning of kephale (“head”) in 1 Cor 11:3 and Eph 5:23? And many other questions. Ep 941S9 Ep941: The Brothers Karamazov (and Other Things): Tom Velasco

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov has been hailed as one of the greatest novels of all time. I just got done reading the book and have been mulling over its multilayered meaning ever since. So I invited my friend Tom Velasco to come on the show to talk about. Tom has read the book at least 10 times (which, at 776 pages is not an easy feat) and has been teaching the book to highschool students at The Ambrose School where he’s been teaching for the last 22 years. In this lengthy podcast, we talk a lot about the book including its background, characters, plot, and its philosophical and theological themes, especially the problem of evil, free, suffering, and the nature of belief. This leads to many philosophical and cultural tangents which we don’t shy away from. Ep 940S9 Ep940: Being a Christian in Hollywood: Hannah Barefoot

Hannah Barefoot is a theatrically trained actress, singer, and dancer originally from Cody, Wyoming. Her first leading role role in the cult favorite, 'The Falls: Testament of Love,' earned her a reputation as a raw and vulnerable dramatic actress early on, while her work in improv developed her comedic chops. She has since starred in many movies and TV shows including King Richard, CSI, Chicago Med, Creepshow, LA’s Finest, Criminal Minds, Good Girls Revolt, and many others. As a singer, Hannah is one half of an indie-folk-rock duo, The Luminous Grey, alongside her husband, Andy Barefoot. Their music has been commissioned and featured in feature films, including two of Hannah's films, and she was recently the lead in renowned choreographer Galen Hook's western musical film, 'There Once Was a Woman.' In this episode, Preston talks with Hannah about what it’s like being a Christian in Hollywood. She takes us behind the scenes and discusses her raw and vulnerable perspective on God, life, acting, Hollywood, and how she understands the art of acting in light of the kingdom of God. Len and co-author Lisa Samson are working on volume four (for Dementia and Alzheimers patients) of their “Songs of Light” series. Len often appears on the “50 Most Influential Christians in America” listings, and in 2010 was selected by the top non-English Christian website as one of the “Top 10 Influential World Christians of 2010”. His “Napkin Scribbles” podcasts can be accessed on leonardsweet.com or Spotify.
