Ep 1013S2 Ep1013: #1013 - Women, the Gender of God, and the Warning Passages in Hebrews: Dr. Amy Peeler

Amy Peeler is a rock star New Testament scholar with a Ph.D from Princeton and who’s been teaching at Wheaton college for over 10 years. Amy is also the author of several scholarly books including You Are My Son: The Family of God in the Epistle to the Hebrews (2014), Hebrews: An Introduction and Study Guide (2020), and the forthcoming Women and the Gender of God (Oct 2022). In this conversation, we talk about her book Women and the Gender of God, wrestling with questions related to God’s non-sexed existence yet gendered revelation (if…that’s even the best way of framing it). God is not male; but he reveals himself as…himself, and Father, and King, and with He/Him pronouns. What does this mean? How should we think of God? Is he male, a man, masculine, or do these categories all fall short of God. Oh, and we also wrestle with the notorious warning passages in Hebrews; namely, Hebrews 6 and 10. Dr. Peeler walks us through the Greek text and theological context of these difficult passages. Ep 1009S2 Ep1009: #1009 - The Theory of Racelessness: Dr. Sheena Mason

The Theory of Racelessness argues that Race does not exist in nature. Race does not exist as a social construction. Everyone is raceless. Racism includes the belief in race as biological or a construction and the practice of racialization. Racism is not everywhere and is not the cause for every perceived “racial” disparity or negative interaction. Racism can be overcome. The Theory of Racelessness is the brain child of scholar, teacher, and writer Dr. Sheena Mason, who earned her Ph.D. in English literature “with distinction” in May 2021 from Howard University. She joined the faculty at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, NY, in August 2021, as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in African American literature. She has taught at the College of William and Mary, California Lutheran University, and Howard University. Her book titled Theory of Racelessness: A Case for Philosophies of Antirace(ism) is scheduled to be released by Palgrave Macmillan on September 23, 2022. Additionally, she co-authored “Harlem Renaissance: An Interpretation of Racialized Art and Ethics,” a chapter of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Ethics and Art examining what, if anything, is the proper role of race in the aesthetic productions of or about members of racialized populations. Ep 1008S2 Ep1008: #1008 - A Raw Conversation with America’s Pastor: Max Lucado

A 2004 Christianity Today article dubbed Max Lucado as “America’s Pastor.” Max has been a pastor for over four decades and has written over 50 books that have sold millions and millions of copies worldwide. Naturally, I was a bit floored when Max reached out to me and wanted to know if he’d be willing to talk with me on my podcast. Of course I said yes! We talked about lots of things related to the current state of the church, how to cultivate longevity and vibrancy in ministry, doing ministry in a post-Christian culture, church and politics, and his most recent book Help Is Here: Finding Fresh Strength and Purpose in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Greg Lukianoff is the co-author (with Dr. Jonathan Haidt) of what I think is one of the top 5 most important books of the last decade: The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Ideas and Bad Intentions Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure. In this conversation, I talk to Greg about the content of this book including the rise of safetyism, the diminishing of free speech on college campuses, the concept of anti-fragility, whether ideas are harmful, whether is healthy or damaging to “platform” ideas you disagree with, whether speech is violence, whether safe spaces on campuses are helping students, and whether trigger warnings help improve a person’s mental heath. A graduate of American University and Stanford Law School, Greg Lukianoff is an attorney and the president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and the author of Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate and his writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Boston Globe, in addition to dozens of other publications. –––––– PROMOS Save 10% on courses with Kairos Classroom using code TITR at kairosclassroom.com! –––––– Sign up with Faithful Counseling today to save 10% off of your first month at the link: faithfulcounseling.com/theology –––––– Save 30% at SeminaryNow.com by using code TITR –––––– Support Preston Support Preston by going to patreon.com Venmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1 Connect with Preston Twitter | @PrestonSprinkle Instagram | @preston.sprinkle Youtube | Preston Sprinkle Check out Dr. Sprinkle’s website prestonsprinkle.com Stay Up to Date with the Podcast Twitter | @RawTheology Instagram | @TheologyintheRaw If you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review. www.theologyintheraw.com Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1002S2 Ep1002: #1002 - What Actually Is “Identity?” Dr. Ryan Peterson

Ryan has a Ph.D. in Theology from Wheaton College and is Associate Professor of Theology at Talbot School of Theology and Biola University in La Mirada, CA. He’s also the author of The Imago Dei as Human Identity: A Theological Interpretation, which is the topic of his Ph.D. dissertation. Ryan and I talk about the concept of identity from both a theological and sociological perspective. The launching point of our discussion is the provocative article by Rogers Brubaker and Fredrick Cooper, “Beyond Identity” https://www.jstor.org/stable/3108478 Is identity essential to our humanity, socially constructed, a blend of both, and how do we know, and why does it matter? Are we ______ because we say we are ________? Or is our identity rooted in nature? What role do things like experience and emotions and personalities play in constructing (or discovering) our identity? We also wrestle with questions related to sexuality and gender identities in light of the sociological conversation around identity. https://www.biola.edu/directory/people/ryan-peterson If you would like to support Theology in the Raw, please visit patreon.com/theologyintheraw for more information! Ep 998S9 Ep998: #998 - Contemporary Christian Worship: Is it Biblical or just Contemporary? Aaron Keyes

Aaron Keyes is a singer/songwriter, pastor, speaker, and has not only been a worship leader for over 20 years, but has discipled and trained hundreds (if not thousands) of other Christian worship leaders. What I love most about Aaron is that he’s incredibly thoughtful and meaningful, and has been trying to restore a more pure, rooted, and theologically rich form of worship in the contemporary church. In this second TITR conversation with Aaron, we talk about the contemporary scene of Christian worship–the pros, the cons, the good, and the goofy, with an aim to help the church get back to a more holistic rhythm of worship, one that celebrates the goodness of God and also laments and protests the evil in the world. Ep 997S9 Ep997: #997 - Singleness, the “Gift of Celibacy,” and Healthy Complementarianism: Dr. Dani Treweek

What does it mean to have the gift of celibacy (or singleness)? Does it mean that you don’t desire sex or marriage? Or that you’ve been given an extra booster shot of the Holy Spirit that gives you radical immunity to sexual temptation (or at least prevents you from serious spiriutal hospitalization)? What actually was Paul talking about when he said that “it’s better to marry than to burn?” (1 Cor 7:7-8). Dr. Dani Treweek is both single and a theological expert in singleness, having recently completed her Ph.D. on a theology of singleness and who’s publishing a book titled “The Meaning of Singleness” (IVP 2023). Dani is an ordained minister, theologian, speaker, writer, adn the founder of “Single Minded,” an evangelical Christian initiative which seeks to resource a positive, biblical conversation about singleness within the Christian life and community. Is Chrisitan rock music sinful? When do I feel most intimate with God? Should Pastors copy other people’s sermons? Would the Canon of Scripture look different if women were involved in the putting it together? What’s my view of the intermediate state? Did the Pharisees and Jesus hold to eternal conscious torment? Ep 995S9 Ep995: #995 - Women Prophets, Teachers, and Preachers, but not Elders: Dr. Gerry Breshears

Gerry holds to a view of women in leaders that’s sometimes considered “soft complementarian.” He believes women can serve in any position of leadership and teaching in the church, except for elders, since one of the criteria for being an elder (or overseer) is “a husband of one wife.” Gerry explains his view in this podcast episode. Gerry has an MDiv from Denver Seminary and a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Fuller Seminary. He’s been teaching at Western Seminary since 1980 where he currently serves as a professor of theology. Gerry has been a mentor to thousands of Christian leaders around the globe. https://www.westernseminary.edu/academics/faculty/gerry-breshears –––––– PROMOS Save 10% on courses with Kairos Classroom using code TITR at kairosclassroom.com! Ep 994S9 Ep994: #994 - A Transwoman (Seda) Interviews Preston about His Views on Trans Identities

Writing a book on transgender idendities as a non-trans person is a bit bold, some might say audacious. This is why I decided to open myself up to my friend Seda, who is a transwoman. Seda read my book Embodied and appreciated a lot of things in it, but she does have some disagreements, which we discuss in this podcast. Seda has become a friend over the last year and has been an incredible dialogue partner. Dr. Joseph (Joey) Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Endowed Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and continued his studies at the University of Tübingen in Germany. His most recent books include The Things I Want to Do: Romans 7 Revisited (forthcoming), A Little Book for New Bible Scholars with E. Randolph Richards (2017) and a co-edited volume with David E. Briones, Paul and Seneca in Dialogue (2017). Dr. Dodson’s current research includes a Romans commentary in the Brill Exegetical Commentary Series and a Colossians-Philemon commentary in The Christian Standard Commentary Series. And–Joey is my best friend. We met at Aberdeen years ago and have been joined at the hip ever since. In this conversation, Joey shows why Romans 7 is NOT talking about a Christian, but a pre-converted first century Jew. Ep 992S9 Ep992: #992 - Is Ethnic Reconciliation Part of the Gospel? Preston Sprinkle

Is ethnic reconciliation an essential part of the gospel, or is it an optional add on? In this solo episode, I argue for the former, that part of the reason why Christ came, died, and was raised from the dead was to create “in one new humanity” (Eph. 2) a multiethnic kingdom and church. After giving a long personal narrative about why this topic is important to me, I work through several key passages integral to the storyline of Scripture including: Genesis 12, Acts 2, 6, 8, 13, Galatians 2-3, Ephesians 2-3, and Revelation 5. Ep 989S9 Ep989: Rethinking Orphanages: Brandon Stiver

Are orphanages helping orphans? Most Christians would say: obviously yes. But Brandon, who’s been working in orphan care for over a decade, says that they are actually perpetuating a system of care that is ultimately not helpful for orphans. Kids belong in families, and there are many other more healthy ways to help kids be raised in a family. Brandon is the senior director of global programs and partnerships for 1MILLIONHOME–an organization aimed at revolutionizing orphan care through broadly shifting mindsets and scaling up proven community-based models that reunite children with families and eradicate practices that lead to family separation. Brandon has worked in the child welfare and nonprofit sectors for over twelve years. Before joining 1MILLIONHOME, he led a family based care and advocacy program in Tanzania for several years. Brandon has also worked at a Tanzanian orphanage, in the Californian foster care system, at various churches and teaches on issues facing at risk children at the university level. He has his Master’s Degree in Global Development and Justice and is passionate about indigenous leadership, community mobilization and seeing global entities come together to deliver the best care for at risk children. –––––– PROMOS Save 10% on courses with Kairos Classroom using code TITR at kairosclassroom.com! –––––– Sign up with Faithful Counseling today to save 10% off of your first month at the link: faithfulcounseling.com/titr or use code TITR at faithfulcounseling.com –––––– Save 30% at SeminaryNow.com by using code TITR –––––– Support Preston Support Preston by going to patreon.com Venmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1 Connect with Preston Twitter | @PrestonSprinkle Instagram | @preston.sprinkle Youtube | Preston Sprinkle Check out Dr. Ep 977S9 Ep977: Christian Universalism, asexuality, demisexuality, same-sex marriage and women in leadership, & the massive increase in trans teens.

I’ve got a fist-full of questions sent in from my Patreon supporters, some of which I answer here. Questions addressed in this public podcast: Can I make a scriptural case for Christian Universalism? What do I think about asexuality, demisexuality, graysexuality? Is the debate about same-sex marriage kind of like the debate about women in church leadership? It seems like there’s a 50/50 chance that my baby daughter will have gender dysphoria–is that true? Can I recommend any good books on sex and marriage? And will we have memories of earth in our resurrected bodies? Ep 975S9 Ep975: Psychedelics, Marijauna, and Being the Church from the Table: Debra Hirsch

I had no agenda going into this conversation, but it quickly delved into talking about psychedelics, marijauna, and how God uses some trippy things to draw people to himself. We then talk about a missional ecclesiology with the table at the center. Deb Hirsch is a speaker, church leader, and writer who has led churches in both Australia and Los Angeles. She is one of the founders of Forge Mission Training Network and is a member of the Forge America national team. She also serves as a board member for Missio Alliance and was part of the leadership team of Christian Associates, a church planting movement in Europe, North & South America. She is the co-author (with Alan Hirsch) of Untamed: Reactivating a Missional Form of Discipleship, and her book Redeeming Sex reflects her own journey and attempts to bring new conversations about sexuality into the context of the church. Deb has been involved in social work, community development and as a trained counselor has worked in the field of sexuality for over twenty-five years. Ep 974S9 Ep974: What Is Autogynephilia? A Conversation with Danny

The theory of Autogynephilia is one of the more controversial and much neglected aspects of the trans* conversation. Some people say it doesn’t exist, while others say that most natal male trans* persons have Autogynephilia. Autogynephilia “is defined as a male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought of himself as a female.” Several scholars have done a lot of research into this phenomenon: Ray Blanchard, J. Michael Bailey, Anne Lawerance (who is a self identified autogynephilic trans* medical researcher), and several others. My conversation today is with my friend Danny, who says he experiences a kind of autogynephilia and has learn to walk in faithfulness to Jesus in the midst of it all.
