S1 Ep 958#958 Asking For Help - Tommy & Harps
Tommy is back at TYP Central and this time talk about why we seek approval from people who don’t care about us (I’ve done it), why we’re so insecure, my walking backwards update (and why it’s so good), being barefoot in the supermarket (apparently it’s not okay), why we’re so crap at asking for help, my dodgy lower back and how I’m fixing it, the pandemic of poor posture and lots more. Enjoy. vidpod.com.au See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 957#957 Hurry Up And Slow Down - Harps & Tiff
I was recently on young Tiff’s show (Roll With the Punches) and we had a great freestyle, organic chat and so this episode of TYP is what us young kids call, a co-share. Among other things, we spoke about her (and many other people’s) propensity to push the metaphoric flush button before they finish weeing (blokes will get it). That is, impatience. And frustration. And unrealistic expectations of how long things like growth, skill, success and mastery can take. Try selling patience and perseverance to a society obsessed with quick-fixes and instant gratification. It was a fun and broadly relevant chat. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 956#956 The Mask Of Sanity - David Gillespie
David Gillespie and I went into this episode with a planned topic and two minutes into our chat, he started talking about some other fascinating sh*t and our plan went out the window. At least you know this conversation is totally organic and unscripted. Yes, we’ve touched on psychopaths before but this time we did a deep dive into the psychology, sociology, anatomy and neurology of not only psychopaths but also, psychotics (not the same), sociopaths and narcissists. Among other cool stuff, David explains how psychopaths are lacking a certain type of spindle neuron (that most of us have), which drives their total lack of empathy, how their brain is literally anatomically different to the majority and why they consider empathy to be a weakness. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 955#955 Efficiency, Effectiveness & Flow - Dr. Stan Beecham
Dr. Stan Beecham is a ‘good ol’ boy’ from Georgia (in the US). He is a Sport Psychologist, High-Performance Coach, Author and as I discovered in this chat, Adventurer and Globetrotter. This time on TYP, the Doc and I talk about producing better outcomes with less effort (I think it’s called efficiency), getting in ‘flow’, being inspired by the achievements of others, exploring our potential (instead of wasting it), why satisfaction and contentment are so hard to maintain, challenging self-limiting beliefs, awareness of our own programming and bias, and taking total ownership of our journey. Enjoy. drstanbeecham.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 954#954 Influencers, True-crime & Play School - Dr. Jodi Richardson
TYP Favourite Dr. Jodi is back sharing the love and this time we open a plethora of conversational doors, talking about the accuracy of our memory of events over time (it’s dodgy), why people are going nuts over true-crime podcasts (often women), cults (ours is launching soon), the power of ‘Influencers’ (for good and bad), quirky personal rituals (I reveal one or two of mine), creating deep connection with others versus social role-playing, knowing when belonging to a certain group is good or bad for us, echo chambers and algorithms (whatever they are) and our mutual love of Playschool. Enjoy. drjodirichardson.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 953#953 Life Is A Marathon - Hugh Brasher
Hugh Brasher is the Director of the London Marathon (one of the biggest marathons on the planet), philanthropist, wildly successful entrepreneur, motorcycle racer and visionary. Among other things, we speak about the transformative experience of doing hard things (like running a marathon) and the incredible love, connection and support that can happen (between total strangers) when a bunch of people all do something hard together. On some level, we’re all doing a marathon (of sorts) and we all need support. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 952#952 Rob Mills Is Surprisingly Good - Rob Mills
Yes, the title sounds like a piss-take but it’s actually the title of Rob’s cleverly-named stage show, which came into being after a stream of reviews essentially saying the same thing; “Rob Mills is surprisingly good.” Both a compliment and insult. Also, kind-of hilarious (and genius) when you use their back-handed complement to brand your own show. Rob is an Australian actor (including the last five years on Neighbours), television host, stage performer (Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Legally Blonde, Ghost, Chess, Into the Woods) and singer-songwriter. I’m not sure what I expected heading into this chat but I loved it and Millsy was funny, smart, genuine, somewhat philosophical and surprisingly good (lol). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 951#951 Virtual Jobs & Industries - Harps & Patrick
Patrick is back and this time we talk about control freaks, deep fakes, the nerd conference he attended, his recent trip to Amsterdam, the irrelevance and ineffectiveness of TV ads, the proliferation of internet-based businesses and careers (all the ‘new jobs’.. like podcasting), touring Rome in a golf cart, the meaning of dreams and lots more. oksmartass.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 950#950 How Many Sets, Reps & Steps - Russ Jarrett
“What’s a good weight, time, distance, speed, result (for this activity, exercise, movement) for somebody at my age?” I’ve been asked a version of that question thousands of times and this episode is kind-of about that question. I began training bodies and working with the humans who live in those bodies forty years ago. Exercise Physiologist Russ Jarret has been doing the same for about thirty. We’ve both worked with people at all levels of the fitness, sporting, genetic and performance spectrums; from ‘Mr. I’ve Never Been to a Gym’ to ‘Miss (or Mrs.) I’m going to the Olympics’. Old. Young. Elite. Novice. Inspired. Lazy. Human. In this episode of TYP, Russ and I talk about a range of exercises and activities and casually discuss what-might-be a good result (number, time, weight, reps) for certain tasks, specific to different ages, fitness levels and training ages (how long you’ve been working out). Once again, our discussion and ideas are not recommendations, prescriptions or personalised programs but rather, what might be a pretty good achievement relative to certain activities for different people at different ages and stages. EnjoySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 949#949 How The Internet Is Changing Us - Todd Sampson
Todd Sampson is an adventurer, award-winning documentary-maker, television presenter and businessman. He is the former national CEO of Leo Burnett and currently sits on the Board of Directors of both Fairfax and Qantas. Todd has two-part doco airing next Monday and Tuesday (as I type this) on Aussie telly (Channel Ten Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10 and 11) and as I’m fascinated with the subject matter - how the internet is changing us and what we can do about it - I thought we’d get him in to TYP Central for a chat about his latest project. He is a brilliant communicator, has an amazing mind and (in my opinion) is a good bloke trying to do good things in the world. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 948#948 My Mate Coggers - Gorgi Coghlan
Gorgi Coghlan is a ripper. Real, vulnerable, philosophical, smart, driven, compassionate, perfectionistic (self-admitted) and great to talk with. She has worked as a successful TV Host, Presenter, Journalist, Reporter, Singer and before all the famous stuff, she was a passionate and dedicated school teacher. I love it when people I’ve watched on the telly for years turn out to be ace in real life. So, Coggers (as I now call her) and I spoke about her anxiety journey, her philosophy on maintaining a healthy marriage, the Untethered Soul (her fave book), seeking external validation, attaching to thoughts, interviewing famous people from around the world, recovering from perfectionism, hanging out with Will Ferrell, life on her farm, responding vs. reacting, the science of self-regulation and lots more. Enjoy. @gorgicoghlanSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 947#947 Understanding Your Brain - Dr. Alex Koefman
It seems The You Project is having a run on Neurosurgeons at the moment. Last week it was Dr. Charlie Teo and this week, Dr. Alex Koefman is back at TYP Central; quite the feat considering there’s only about 200 of them (Neurosurgeons) in Australia. This time the Doc and I discuss why his colleagues regard him as an agitator, his inability to be content (perfectionist anyone?), our need for a (metaphoric) security blanket, managing self-doubt, the role of the amygdala (it’s not only about emotions), why the left and right hemispheres of the brain are not only about logic and creativity (as previously thought), his most inspirational moment in an operating theatre, contact sports and brain damage (CTE), his presentation at our TYP conference and lots more. Enjoy. dralexkoefman.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 946#946 Social Media But Better - Sue Fennessy
Sue Fennessy is a serial technology entrepreneur, innovator, creator, thought-leader and disruptor. She’s also cheeky, funny, curious and like me, periodically inappropriate. Which, of course, I celebrate. This was a fun chat with a passionate woman, who’s determined to bring some light, laughter and positivity into what-can-be the messy, negative, polarising and hateful landscape of social media. Sue is all about creating a safe, supportive and empowering online space for people to be inspired, informed and educated and she’s on a f*cking mission! That space is called WeAre8. Among other things, we chat about wanting to rescue a sloth (her first big project as a kid), how social media algorithms work, seeking approval from people who don’t care about us, being addicted to drama, being an entrepreneur (it chooses us), under-estimating our own power and potential, imposter syndrome, falling apart on the floor of the shower, online nasty-ness and lots more. Enjoy. weare8.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 945#945 How To Break Up With Friends - Dr. Hannah Korrel
Dr. Hannah Korrel is a Neuropsychologist, Educator, Speaker and Author (the name of her book is today’s episode title) with a skill to make what-can-be confusing mind-brain stuff, relatable, interesting and understandable. In this episode, we explore the ‘mind cage’, psychology vs. neurology, guilt, brainwashing, neuro-depression, neuro-anxiety, self-regulation, belief viruses, toxic friendships, transactional vs. reciprocal relationships, developing assertiveness and lots more. Enjoy. @nobullpsychhannahkorrel.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 944#944 Mind, Body, Tech - Patrick Bonello & Tor Roxburgh
Patrick and Tor are back and this time it’s a little less tech-talk and a lot more chat in the research, medical and health space. Among other things, we talk about how vitamin supplementation can improve cognitive function (brain performance), uterus transplants (it’s a thing), how improving cardiovascular fitness can add 6 to 8 years to our ‘health-span’, software developed to catch students cheating, Patrick gives us an amazing insight into life in Malta (where he’s currently at on his global adventure) and he also shares with us how he considers his twin brother to be something of a biological safety net, in case he needs a new organ. Dark (lol). oksmartass.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 943#943 What's Your Body Saying? - Dr. Cam McDonald
Dr. Cam is back and as always he was brilliant! Following on from our last episode, we got him back to answer some listener questions. We go real deep, so you might need a pen and paper. This time we explore the link between cravings and hormones, medical testing for food intolerances, shift work and circadian rhythms, puppy porn, how our dietary needs change as we age, reducing inflammation, veganism, weight training, tracking calories and macros (to count or not to count?), creating optimal online learning environments and lots more. shae.aiph360.me/tech4goodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 942#942 The Compassionate D*ckhead - Dr. Julian Abel
Firstly, the reason for the title becomes clear during the chat. Dr. Julian Abel is awesome. I wish he lived in Melbourne, because we would definitely be friends. I love how he thinks, his compassion and kindness, his philosophy around health, healing and dying and I love that it’s all wrapped in a wicked sense of humour and great story-telling skills. Every now and then I chat with someone on TYP and I sense I’m getting the ‘show’ but with the Doc, he’s a genuinely beautiful soul who (despite his medical training) believes that compassion, connection, kindness and care are the greatest healers (literally, not metaphorically) and by the way, there’s significant research to back his ideas up. For me, this episode literally felt like I was hanging out with a mate having a fascinating conversation. *BIO: Julian is a retired palliative care physician, Director of Compassionate Communities UK Author and Podcaster. Over the last decade, he’s become increasingly interested in the impact of compassion being the basis of human relationships and he’s applied this in healthcare, in communities and beyond. He believes that society has developed in such a way to facilitate a drastic malnourishment of community, connection and compassion. Enjoy the Doc.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 941#941 The Good & Bad Of Drugs - Nima Alavi
Nima is back and this time we discuss the perils of Paracetamol and how it can kill people when abused (it’s scary), cognitive decline that comes with age and what we can do about it, the practice of off-label use (drugs being used for reasons other than their intended use), Ritalin, peptides, opioid addiction, inflammation vs. nerve pain, my crazy hallucination taking Lyrica (literally one tablet) and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 940#940 804 Days In An Iranian Prison - Dr. Kylie Moore-Gilbert
Dr. Kylie Moore-Gilbert is an Australian academic who was arrested at Tehran’s International Airport in Iran in September of 2018 for a crime that she didn’t commit. In fact, a crime that didn’t actually happen. She was charged with espionage and subsequently spent 804 days incarcerated in a Tehran prison; an innocent Aussie stranded in a version of hell on earth. Not only did she spend much of her time in total isolation (solitary confinement), but she also endured ongoing abuse, mental torture, deprivation, threats and months of interrogations. In the middle of the darkness, there were moments of sunshine, in the form of some beautiful woman (fellow prisoners) who showed her love and compassion when she needed it most. This is an amazing story of courage, resilience, adaptation and survival. Twitter: @KMooreGilbertInstagram: @kyliemooregilbertSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 939#939 From Mechanic To Neurosurgeon - Dr. Charlie Teo AM
Growing up, Dr. Charlie Teo wanted to be either a rubbish collector (because they’re fit), a bouncer (because he was a martial artist) or a mechanic (because he was into motorbikes - and still is). He actually started an apprenticeship as a mechanic before he studied medicine. This was a fascinating and meandering chat exploring Charlie’s strategy for avoiding jet lag, neuroplasticity, improving with age, people wanting him to fail, dealing with criticism and hate, mapping the brain, a brain-machine interface, contact sports, poo transplants (yep), why he became a vegan, his exercise regime, our mutual love of motorbikes, patient-centred care, hanging out with the Dalai Lama 1 on 1 (for 4 hours), the power of kindness and lots more. BIO: For over 30 years Dr. Charlie Teo AM has been instrumental in the development, dissemination and acceptance of the concept of keyhole minimally invasive techniques in neurosurgery. Dr. Teo runs a fellowship program that attracts applicants yearly and has trained many of the world's leading figures in neurosurgery. He has trained at distinguished centres such as the Barrow Neurological Institute, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Stanford University, Vanderbilt University and Harvard University. charlieteofoundation.org.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 938#938 Biology & Identity - Dr. Cam McDonald
Dr. Cam McDonald is back and this time we dive into personalised learning, how our physiologically changes as we head into spring (here in Oz), the relationship between our biology and identity, how different kids respond to the same stimulus in the classroom and why, kids being penalised for doing what they’re brain is programming them to do, creating an environment works for our brain, personality and operating system, differentiated learning, good and bad anxiety, constipation, placebos, caffeine (good or bad?) and lots more. Enjoy. ph360.me/tech4goodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 937#937 The Bogan Philosopher - Geoff Jowett
The animal-loving, deep-thinking, nature-loving, story-telling Aussie bogan philosopher is back, waxing lyrical about all-things life, happiness, meaning, purpose and of course, animal therapy (while being interrupted mid-podcast by a Scottish Terrier trying to steal his banana bread). Part mayhem, part discussion, part genius, all Geoff. Enjoy. @geoffjowettSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 936#936 F*ck Off Doc - Dr. Ingrid Nielsen
Dr. Ingrid Nielsen is one of my favourite guests because every time we connect, she inspires me to do better, think better and be better. She’s 75 going on 22, a Psychiatrist, marathon runner, weight trainer and problem-solver, who works under extreme pressure in the emergency department of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She’s regularly called the ‘C’ word, told to ‘F’ off daily and in the middle of the mayhem (people often present to the ED in psychosis), she calmly does what’s required to help people in pain. As always, this was a fun chat and Ingrid even shared a personal story about a recent surgery she had that went horribly wrong (she’s okay now). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 935#935 Performing Under Pressure - David Knoff
David Knoff is an Antarctic Expedition Leader, Author and Leadership expert who specialises in remote leadership, hostile environment diplomacy and resilience. Oh, and he recently spent 537 days stranded in Antarctica during the pandemic, leading over a hundred humans through an extended period of uncertainty, danger and real-time problem solving in the most extreme of environments. This is David’s second visit to TYP and this was more of a general chat about all-things mindset, self-management, adaptation, courage, communication and teamwork. I loved it. davidknoff.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 934#934 The Money Coach - Vanessa Stoykov
This was a fun chat with a fun lady who knows a vast amount about wealth creation and management talking with a bloke who is financially inept. It’s not that I don’t care about money, it’s just that it’s not really an area of expertise or mastery. Being as I own a business, I should probably care more and pay more attention. Vanessa Stoykov is on a mission to help Australians get real about money and she rocked up to TYP full of cheek, energy and some very sound financial advice and yes, I listened. Her new book ‘The Five Conversations About Money That Will Radically Change Your Life’ is now available for pre-order (blatant plug). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 933#933 Extreme Living - James Castrission
James Castrission is an Adventurer, Keynote Speaker, Leadership Consultant and Author. He holds two Guinness World Records for his extreme accomplishments. In 2008, James and his mate Justin Jones became the first kayakers to cross the Tasman Sea without support and in 2012 James and Justin made history by completing the longest unsupported polar expedition of all time: the first return journey from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back without assistance. Did I mention he’s a little crazy? Or that Justin lost 30kgs and James lost 26kgs on their Antarctic adventure? This was a fun chat and an interesting insight into the mind of an extreme adventurer. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 932#932 What Is Value? - Tommy & Harps
Videographer, Creator, Podcaster, Adopted Son (I have a few) and one of my favourite peeps to do coffee and chat with, Tommy Jackett is back at TYP. This chat follows no particular path or direction but nonetheless, there’s a little something in it for everyone. A conversational smorgasbord, of sorts. We chatted about how often I’m asked to be a ‘pseudo-dad’ (often), meeting people you’ve never met who know you well (because of the podcast), love jobs vs. money jobs, hustle culture, inappropriate laughter, imposter syndrome, anti-goals, the way we label things (for better or worse), the science of podcasting (I know it seems like unplanned, chaotic bullshit), excellence and obsession, creating connection, creating a demand for what you do, perceived value and lots more. Enjoy. vidpod.com.auThe Craig Harper ShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 931#931 How I Manage Me (I'm A Handful) - Freestyling With Harps
I don’t think that the way I manage my mind, body, emotions, lifestyle, energy, potential, time, resources, diet, relationships and career is particularly interesting but nonetheless, I’m consistently asked questions about my personal operating system (the way I manage my life and me, in the middle of that life). If you’re interested, this is the answer to some of those questions. If not, don’t blame you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 930#930 The Functional Medicine Movement - James Maskell
James Maskell is leading the evolution of functional medicine. His mission is to empower and build a community of 100,000 integrative practitioners to become leaders and change agents in the movement to accelerate the evolution of medicine, by providing them with the tools, technology, and resources to thrive in a micro-practice. He believes we can disrupt the current healthcare model, shifting the paradigm away from the over-dependency on an allopathic, disease-centred model, to create a more sustainable, preventative system. James believes community, not medicine, creates health. I love that medicine is an ever-changing landscape and this was a fascinating chat with a man on a medical mission. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 929#929 Body Dysmorphia, Disorders & Dysfunction - Nikki Morrison
After perhaps the best podcast debut ever talking about being and End-of-Life Doula, Nikki is back and this time we talk about her personal journey navigating life with an all-consuming eating disorder, body image issues, social anxiety, horrible self-esteem, obsessive thinking (and behaving) and lots more. Again, this might seem like a ‘downer’ of a conversation but on many levels, it’s actually uplifting, beautiful and empowering. It’s also wildly honest, brave and authentic. This is a great chat for people dealing with their own challenges but I also believe it will be enlightening and educational for people (without issues) who are interested in knowing and understanding more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 928#928 Testosterone - David Gillespie
Testosterone. Dudes have it. Women have it (in small amounts). Teenage boys have truck loads of it. And it can have a profound impact on everything from risk-taking, empathy and communication to differences in socialisation, thinking, decision-making and even, cause of death (men are three-times more likely to die from an accident). This is an interesting chat with David Gillespie about a ubiquitous hormone that is often misunderstood and/or misrepresented. Oh, and wait till you hear the ‘origin story’ of testosterone therapy (I use the word ‘therapy’ very loosely). Enjoy. davidgillespie.orgSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 927#927 My Perspective On Perspective - Harps & Tiff
I recently chatted with Tiff over at ‘Roll with the Punches’ Central and not surprisingly, we took a deep dive into the human condition and chatted about all things mind, perception, metacognition, perspective, beliefs and reality. You know… the simple stuff. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 926#926 Australia's Best Coach - Dr. Ric Charlesworth
Dr. Ric Charlesworth is a bloody ripper and it was a privilege for me to chat with a true legend of Australian sport. He is a Medical Doctor, Former Captain of the Australian Hockey Team and the Western Australian State Hockey Team and Cricket Team, having played hockey for Australia for a record 17 years and first-class cricket for nearly a decade. He was the National Coach of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team from 1993 to 2000 and between 2009 and 2014, he coached the Men’s team. In four World Cups and three Olympic Games as coach of Australia, Charlesworth’s teams won Gold on 6 occasions and once won bronze. They won 8 of 9 Champions Trophy tournaments and 2 Commonwealth Games Gold medals… this is a record never equalled in the sport. Between 1994 and 2014 Charlesworth was ‘Coach of the Year’ 8 times! Apart from being a four-time Olympian as a player, he’s also written five books, worked with Fremantle Football Club for two years as their high-performance manager and did I mention he was a member of Federal parliament for a lazy decade (pre coaching)? Amazing. Enjoy. riccharlesworth.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 925#925 There's No Magic Pill - Russ Jarrett
Exercise Physiologist, High-Performance Coach and Educator, Russ Jarrett is back and for this episode, we revisit some the over-looked, under-utilised and misunderstood fundamentals of creating and maintaining a new-and-improved health state. Getting ‘in shape’ (whatever that means to you personally) is a bit about knowledge and a lot about what we do with that knowledge. In 2022, we’ve never had more information, inspiration and education but interestingly, we’ve never been in worse shape (collectively). The sooner we stop looking the quick-fix, shortcut and magic pill, and the sooner we start taking total ownership of our choices, actions and outcomes, the sooner the ‘magic’ happens. Funny that. russelljarrett.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 924#924 Turning Ideas Into Reality - Russ & Tara Jarrett
Some people have been hoping that the ‘opportunity would knock’, that they would ‘fall on their feet’, that things would ‘work themselves out’ or that ‘their time would come’ for decades. So much hoping, wanting and waiting, so little doing. At the same time, some people have been creating their own opportunities, taking chances, doing the work and turning their ideas, plans and dreams into real-world success stories. This episode of TYP is a conversation for people who might (at some stage) want to consider creating their own small (or big) business, brand, product or service. It’s full of ideas, stories, advice, warnings and encouragement. Enjoy. @PilatesSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 923#923 Tech, Tai Chi & Teenage Trauma - Harps & Patrick
TYP regular Patrick is traversing the globe in pursuit of all-things tech and for this episode, we caught up with him in Bath (the town in the UK, not the thing you wash in). It was a different but fun conversation, covering everything from Tai Chi in Germany and a geek convention in Amsterdam to the latest iPhone, the Queen’s passing and Patrick being catapulted off a treadmill as a teenager. Ok, somewhat eclectic. Enjoy. genesisfx.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 922#922 Don't Say The 'D' Word - Nikki Morrison
Death. There.. I said it. In almost a thousand episodes, this is best debut (never been on a podcast) by any TYP guest. Not only has Nikki Morrison not been on a podcast but she’d never even listened to one until yesterday (in preparation for our chat). Nikki and I went to Uni together (my first time around) and since then, she’s filled a range of fascinating roles, done some amazing work (it’s more of a calling) and has dedicated herself to a life of love and service. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say that these days Nikki works with a broad range of people going through grief and loss, as well as being an end-of-life Doula, supporting people who are dying (literally being by their side until their last breath). Despite the subject matter, I found this to be a beautiful, compassionate and uplifting conversation about something that is an inevitability for all of us. Oh.. and by the way, I’m pretty sure she’s an actual angel. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 921#921 Living Younger Longer - Dr. Norman Swan
I almost wasn’t smart enough to have this conversation but I just managed to hang on by the skin of my metaphoric teeth. Dr Norman Swan, trained in paediatrics, was one of the first medically qualified journalists in Australia, with a broadcast career spanning more than 30 years. He currently hosts Radio National's ‘The Health Report’ and co-hosts ‘Coronacast’, which has 2.6 million monthly downloads. He also reports on the ABC TV's 7.30, is a guest reporter on ‘Four Corners’; appears on ‘The Drum’ and is an occasional host of Radio National Breakfast. His last book ‘So You Think You Know What's Good for You?’ became a bestseller in 2021 and his latest book ‘So You Want to Live Younger Longer’ is flying off the shelves (both physical and virtual). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 920#920 Out Of The Chaos - Nicho Plowman
Nicho Plowman is a Vedic Meditation teacher and the co-founder of Insight Timer who, at one stage of his journey, was a high-flying, hard-living entrepreneur heading down a path of personal (mental, emotional, physical) destruction. Fortunately for him (and us), he turned the crazy-ness around and I got to have a fascinating chat with him at TYP Central. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 919#919 Sh*t Friends (& Good Ones) - Dr. Amanda Ferguson
Dr. Amanda Ferguson is back at TYP Central and this time we discuss having a litmus test for friends, differentiating between familiarity and friendship, why marriage might be on the slide (as a cultural norm), how people rationalise suicide, understanding the role of the conscious and subconscious mind, clinical hypnotherapy vs. performance hypnotherapy, keeping our mind and brain young (in terms of cognitive performance and function) and lots more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 918#918 D*ck Pills, CBD Oil & Legal Weed - Nima Alavi
Compounding Pharmacist and TYP regular Nima Alavi is back, and this time we do a deep dive into the ongoing mental health consequences of covid, the why, how and what-to-do about erectile dysfunction, the idea (and potential industry) of ‘feel good’ prescription drugs, psychedelics being used to treat mental health issues (they’re doing trials at my Uni - Monash), testosterone therapy (the pros, cons, misinformation and hysteria), boosting our immune system naturally, the tanning peptide with the ‘side effect’ of making people horny and lots more. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 917#917 High Performance - Harps
High Performance (the term) can mean a myriad of things, depending on context, situation, task, environment and the individual aiming to be a high performer. When I talk about high performance (as a Coach), I’m talking about our willingness (you and me) to do the best we can, wherever we are, with whatever we have available to us (knowledge, skill, talent, genetics, resources, energy, time). In popular culture, high performers are often identified as the uber-talented, successful, intellectual, athletic, beautiful and of course, rich. But then there’s the group I inhabit (maybe you do too).. the “I’ll never win a Nobel Prize, Olympic Final or Grammy Award” group. What about us? Can we be high performers? The answer is, absolutely yes. This is an interesting conversation about the psychology, process and practice, of high performance. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 916#916 Madder Than A Cut Snake - Jacqui Cooper
Jacqui Cooper is a five-time World Champion aerial ski-jumper, five-time Olympian, Corporate Speaker, Mum of three, wife of one, ex-athlete of mine, hi-energy, perfectionistic, obsessive, OCD… maniac (self-described). Someone once referred to her as ‘madder than a cut snake’. She doesn’t disagree. This chat was funny, inspirational and surprising. We spoke about maximising potential, the importance of managing our mind, self-regulation, white-line fever (she still has it), her 32 injury-related surgeries (not a typo), the risk, fear and logistics of flying off a ramp at 70kph and being the first woman in history to do a triple twisting, triple somersault with skis strapped to her feet(!), her (metaphoric) sh*t-shield, her inability to meditate (there’s a shock) and lots more. Enjoy. *Oh BTW, after we signed off at the end, Jacqui told Melissa and I a killer story, which we decided to include, so stick around after we say good-bye. jacquicooper.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 915#915 Old-Fashioned Knobs - Patrick Bonello & Tor Roxburgh
Patrick and Tor are back talking about tech that can make our lives better and sometimes, worse. This time we speak about why touch screens in cars are way more dangerous and distracting than old-fashioned knobs and buttons (to do the same jobs), technology helping people with dementia, companies integrating batteries into the actual frames of their electric cars, Elon Musk getting fat shamed, how our brain responds under fMRI when we think about the different people in our lives, power-saving mode on my (your) phone (apparently I need to use it), the things that chew up phone battery and for some reason, we talk about the very non-tech topic of intermittent fasting. Enjoy. oksmartass.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 914#914 Why David Doesn't Wash His Hair - David Gillespie
TYP Favourite David Gillespie is back, and for the first time, he’s answering a bunch of questions from our listening audience. Among other things, we explore Paleo (pros and cons), beating sugar addiction, dietary fibre (important or not?), allergies, intermittent fasting (yes or no?), cholesterol, saturated fats, suggested supplements, the calories in-out debate, sugar addiction, hair-loss in women, how to find reliable (unbiased) research, reading food labels, belly-fat post menopause and of course, why he and his entire family haven’t washed their hair for over four years (really). S1 Ep 913#913 The One-Horse Town Doctor - Dr. Tahnee Bridson
Dr. Tahnee Bridson is a psychiatry doctor originally from a small country town in Far North Queensland, who’s best known for her work to reduce stigma, improve help-seeking and promote mental wellbeing. Tahnee experienced shame and stigma firsthand when she was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa as a university student but grew through adversity and defied the odds by graduating top of her class. Her personal experiences were the inspiration behind her organisation, Hand-n-Hand Peer Support. This was an interesting, fun and dare I say, therapeutic conversation for both Tahnee and myself. Although we’re quite different people, it seems we’ve shared some very similar experiences. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 912#912 Gold Medal Mindset - Darren Hicks
Darren Hicks (OAM) is an Australian Paralympic cyclist who has won medals at several World Road and Track Championships, including two gold. His right leg was amputated above the knee as a consequence of a road crash in 2014. At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, he won a gold and a silver medal. I’m not sure if Darren is a maniac or complete inspiration, so I’m going with inspirational maniac. He recently rode 205 kms in just under six and a half hours at an average of 32kph powered only by his left leg. I’m an Exercise Scientist and I had no idea that was (is) even possible! This was an interesting chat with a bloke who’s been through some serious sh*t but has come out the other side and pretty amazing human. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 911#911 What Is The Real World? - Patrick & Harps
Virtual reality, augmented reality and actual reality; it can get very confusing, very fast when you start exploring the ‘what is reality’ question in a physical world that’s becoming increasingly intertwined with a virtual world. Especially when we’re in a VR scenario (room, place, experience, situation) and in-the-moment, our brain can’t differentiate between a virtual snake slithering towards us and an actual one… leading to a very-real psychological, emotional and physical reaction from something that doesn’t actually ‘exist’. I’m equally excited and cautious about the ever-evolving technology-driven landscape that we all inhabit and while I think that much of what we have at our disposal is incredible and potentially life-improving, I’m not sure that ‘technological advancement’ always equates to human advancement. This was a fun chat with Patrick. oksmartass.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 910#910 The Bogan Guru - Geoff Jowett
TYP Fave Geoffro is back philosophising the sh*t out of me from his rural haven (aka dog heaven), down-loading his wisdom, insight and dare-I-say spirituality (his version anyway) in his own unique bogan-meets-motivational-speaker-meets-Dalai-Lama… style. Enjoy. @geoffjowettSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 909#909 Soul Journey - Harps & Tiff
I was recently on young Tiff’s show (Roll with The Punches) and while I can’t exactly remember (word for word) what we spoke about, I do remember it as one of our more profound chats and an episode I really enjoyed. So, rather than writing an overview of a conversation I had a week ago, I thought I’d cheat and use Tiff’s (synopsis)… *Harps is back and after a little light-hearted banter and exploring how we embrace conflict, confrontation and difficult conversations, our interest moves back to one of our favourite conversational places... the soul. Harps shares some seriously heart-warming (and heartbreaking) experiences of his that shaped his perspective and to be honest, shaped mine hearing about it too. This conversation left me thinking perhaps it's time to park our goal-setting and success-seeking and simply submit to our soul journey (nice copy Tiff).
