S1 Ep 1157#1157 Stuff I Needed To Get Better At - Harps (PT2)

Yesterday during a break in a workshop, someone asked me “what’s the stuff you sucked at, that you needed to get better at to succeed?” The episode is an answer to that question. I talk about what I needed to change, why I needed to change it and how I changed it. I share this in the hope that my journey from bad to better might save you some time, pain and frustration. S1 Ep 1155#1155 You & Your Body - Harps & Tiff

Tiff and I planned to discuss a certain topic but before we got under way, we got distracted with a forty-five-minute chat about all-things body management and human optimisation. Specifically, we spoke about optimising our genetics, getting better (and smarter) with age, the over-looked and under-estimated health ingredient, a hundred-day self-experiment, reconnecting with our body (it’s always telling us something), the relationship between physical, mental and emotional health and lots more. S1 Ep 1154#1154 From Mechanic To Neurosurgeon - Dr. Charlie Teo AM

Every now and then (about four times in a thousand episodes), we-revisit a slightly-updated version of an old episode, which proved to be super-popular first time around. This is such an episode. Many of you newbies have never listened to it, some hard-core TYPers have relistened a bunch of times and many have listened once and (understandably) forgotten most of what was spoken about. Anyway, growing up, Dr. Charlie Teo wanted to be either a rubbish collector (because they’re fit), a bouncer (because he was a martial artist) or a mechanic (because he was into motorbikes - and still is). He actually started an apprenticeship as a mechanic before he studied medicine. This was a fascinating and meandering chat exploring Charlie’s strategy for avoiding jet lag, neuroplasticity, improving with age, people wanting him to fail, dealing with criticism and hate, mapping the brain, a brain-machine interface, contact sports, poo transplants (yep), why he became a vegan, his exercise regime, our mutual love of motorbikes, patient-centred care, hanging out with the Dalai Lama 1 on 1 (for 4 hours), the power of kindness and lots more. BIO: For over 30 years Dr. Charlie Teo AM has been instrumental in the development, dissemination and acceptance of the concept of keyhole minimally invasive techniques in neurosurgery. Dr. Teo runs a fellowship program that attracts applicants yearly and has trained many of the world's leading figures in neurosurgery. He has trained at distinguished centres such as the Barrow Neurological Institute, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Stanford University, Vanderbilt University and Harvard University. charlieteofoundation.org.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1153#1153 When A.I. Takes Over - David Gillespie

TYP’S resident Brainiac (and one of Australia’s most successful authors) David Gillespie is back, and this time we talk about the reality of living in a world which is increasingly being influenced and impacted (for good and bad) by artificial intelligence. Among other things, we talk about how in a short period of time (months), Chat GPT has gone from something none of us had heard of, to something which is currently being used by more than a hundred million people. We also discuss the possibility of A.I. becoming sentient (thinking for itself and teaching itself).. not terrifying at all! *Note... the audio quality in this ep. is a 7 because I recorded it in a hotel room and may have forgotten to plug in my external microphone. S1 Ep 1152#1152 Our Shrinking Attention Span - Dr. Gloria Mark

According to Dr. Gloria Mark, we spend an average of just 47 seconds on any screen before shifting our attention and it takes 25 minutes to bring that attention back to a task after an interruption. And that we interrupt ourselves more than we're interrupted by others. Also, did you know that that we can only focus on one thing at a time? Or that multi-tasking doesn’t really work or lead to greater efficiency or better outcomes. Or that cognitive fatigue is a thing? Or that having a mobile electronic ‘brain’ permanently attached to us (one that does the thinking, remembering and problem-solving for us) is down-regulating our actual biological brain? Technology is not bad (of course) but we need to learn how to co-exist with it in a healthy and sustainable way. Gloria Mark is Chancellor’s Professor of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD from Columbia University in psychology and studies the impact of digital media on people’s lives. She takes a deep dive in examining multitasking, interruptions, and mood with the use of digital devices. She has published over 200 articles. S1 Ep 1151#1151 Life-Saving Tech, Robot Dogs & Creepy VR - Patrick Bonello

Resident TYP Nerd (and golden tonsils) Patrick is back talking tech, enlightening the dinosaur (Stegosaurus Harps) and this time we talk about a medical radar device that can monitor older adults (are you listening Ron and Mary?) through walls, without a need for wearable trackers or cameras! Also, we learn about new technology that allows people with disabilities (or anyone, for that matter) to operate their devices via small lip and tongue movements (f**king amazing). We chat about a dude who won first prize at a prestigious photo competition but wouldn’t accept the prize because his award-winning ‘photo’ was actually an AI generated image! We also talk about the New York Police Department introducing robot dogs (what could go wrong??) as part of their police force. And on the creepy-as-f*ck front, Patrick tells me about a VR experience designed to simulate a cardiac arrest (yours) and then guide you through your own death. Nope. Nope. Nope. F*ck that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1150#1150 Comparison - Harps & Tiff

Is comparison really the thief of joy? What if the comparison you’re making is between previous you and current you? And what if that comparison provides you with perspective, self-awareness and even a little motivation? And eventually, improvement, growth and a new-and-improved version of you? Like many things, comparison can be both a positive and a negative in our lives, depending on how we use it. This episode is a co-share of a chat I had with young Tiff on Roll With the Punches. Who knew that a professor could be as sweary as me? And also a funny, inappropriate, brilliant story-teller? And a science communicator, who makes the (potentially) complicated stuff, simple, practical and listener-friendly? Dr. Jaimie Krems is all that and more and I f**king loved our chat. S1 Ep 1148#1148 Finding Hope When Life Sucks - Cyndie Spiegel

In a ten-month period in 2020, Cyndie Spiegel’s young nephew (who she was close to) was murdered, her mum died unexpectedly (not long after), her brother had a severe stroke and almost died and Cyndie was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing surgery and radiation therapy. And somehow, in the middle of all that suffering, grief and mayhem, Cyndie found a way to latch onto moments of joy. Sometimes life truly sucks and sh*t things happen to good people but I love the way Cyndie thinks, tells stories and connects and I believe for many, this will be an important listen. Kevin Griffin is a world-renowned Author, Buddhist Teacher and Speaker who happens to be a recovering addict, musician and incredibly down-to-earth bloke, who is refreshingly honest, flawed (like me), realistic, relatable and dare-I-say… somewhat ‘unspiritual’ (that’s not meant to be an insult). Oh.. and he’s also wise and funny. This was a meandering but enjoyable ‘coffee-chat’ style of episode and I loved it. kevingriffin.netSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1145#1145 How Cultures Create Emotions - Batja Mesquita

This was a totally new topic and conversation for me and I found it fascinating. It was also somewhat confronting because Batja’s research around emotions didn’t neatly fit into my ‘how emotions work’ box. How dare she. In this chat, we talk about the relationship between culture and its impact on emotions; and not just cultural differences between countries but also differences between religions, corporations and all kinds of groups. Growing up in the Netherlands where (in Batja’s words) people are somewhat direct, not gushy and not overly complimentary (unless it’s totally warranted), she was perplexed when she moved to the U.S. to find herself in the middle of an excess of compliments, superlatives and (in her mind) unwarranted praise and inappropriate familiarity from strangers. This chat is an eye-opener and mind-bender. I loved it.*Spoiler alert… when Batja was a little girl, she asked her mum “am I pretty?” and her Dutch mum replied.. “oh, about average”, being completely serious (and not trying in any way to be hurtful) and in our conversation Batja tells me “her judgement was correct, I am about average looking”. batjamesquita.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1144#1144 Finding Your Calm - Chris Bailey

Chris Bailey is a Canadian writer and productivity consultant, and the author of The Productivity Project (2016), Hyperfocus (2018) and How to Calm Your Mind (2022). It took an on-stage panic attack for Chris to recognise how critical it is for us to invest in calm at the same time as we invest in becoming more productive. Productivity advice works - and we need it now more than ever -but it’s just as vital that we develop our capacity for calm. By finding calm and overcoming anxiety, we don’t just feel more comfortable in our own mind, we build a deeper, more expansive reservoir of energy to draw from throughout the day. The pursuit of calm ultimately leads us to become more engaged, focused, and deliberate, while leading to deeper satisfaction in our lives. chrisbailey.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Captured, brutally tortured and imprisoned in the Hanoi Hilton where Charlie remained a prisoner of war for the next 6 years. He writes a great blog (I checked it out) called Experimental History, is a stand-up comic, a Harvard Graduate and I think even he’d admit that he’s kind of a quirky academic-comedian-philosopher hybrid. S1 Ep 1137#1137 How Healthy Is Your Brain? - Marc Milstein

This is not another conversation about the mind. Or thinking. Or beliefs. Or subjective reality. No, it’s a conversation about the 1.3kg physical organ that resides in your skull. Did you know that you can improve the health and function of your brain by walking faster? And laughing more? And being properly hydrated? And standing up straight? Did you know there’s a powerful relationship between gut health and brain health? Or that brains typically start to shrink at around forty but there’s a way for you and I to be ‘atypical’? Did you know that there’s a relationship between your balance (speaking actual physical balance here) and your ‘brain age’? S1 Ep 1133#1133 Is 'An Easy Life' A Good Goal? - Harps & Tiff

The desire for an easy life is an understandable desire but (1) what exactly is an easy life? (2) Does an easy life automatically equate to a happy, strong, resilient, fulfilled person in the middle of that life? (3) Does a life full of peaks and troughs, messy-ness and mayhem, tears and joy automatically equal an unhappy, unproductive, broken person? Is it possible that happiness and fulfilment is not about building an ‘easy life’ but rather, creating a stronger, more adaptable and confident version of you? Me? S1 Ep 1129#1129 Failure - Harps

What is failure? Personally, I don’t like the term but it’s a common label that we give certain events and outcomes based on our goals, intentions, plans, expectations and hopes. But what happens when we take the same less-than-desirable result and apply different thinking? Is there a lesson here? How have I grown through this? In terms of my strategy, what worked and what didn’t work? What would I do different next time? What awareness do I have now that I didn’t before? If not achieving a desired outcome is ‘failure’, then I have spent much of my life failing. Fortunately, those less-than-desirable outcomes have also given me insight, awareness, skill, gratitude, knowledge and resilience. Oh, and a few successes. S1 Ep 1125#1125 Unconscious Bias - Jessica Nordell

We all like to think we have no bias, that we’re totally objective, open-minded and would never discriminate. It makes us feel better about us. In fact, 90% of us think we’re more open-minded than the average person. Well, if you’re like me and have existing beliefs, ideas, values and ingrained attitudes (not bad things, by the way), then like me, you’re not quite the cognitive or emotional blank canvas you might like to be. Life’s much more comfortable (for a while) when we only pay attention to the stuff (ideas, information, philosophies, research, people) that reflects our own thinking (confirmation bias). And for people who love being comfortable and ‘right’ (all of us), bias makes complete ‘sense’. *Jessica Nordell is an award-winning author and science writer known for blending rigorous science with compassionate humanity. Her first book, ‘The End of Bias: A Beginning: The Science and Practice of Overcoming Unconscious Bias’ is the culmination of fifteen years of reporting and writing on the subject of bias and discrimination and how to solve it, for publications including the New York Times, the Atlantic, and the New Republic. S1 Ep 1124#1124 Why You Should Avoid Sports Drinks And Energy Drinks - David Gillespie

This is a bloody fascinating and revealing conversation about sports and energy drinks with David Gillespie. In short.. brilliant marketing, sh*t products. We talk about the origin and evolution of these types of drinks, the potential risks, the wildly misleading (unethical?) marketing and claims used to manipulate (scam?) teenagers into consuming them, companies using ‘Influencers’ to make their products attractive to vulnerable consumers, the crazy amounts of caffeine in ‘energy’ drinks which ironically, contain zero energy (calories), sports drinks which are actually soft drinks minus the carbonation, the potential relationship between excessive sugar consumption and ligament injuries (like ruptured ACL’s) and my working hypothesis on why the Crab (my training partner) may have died for 17 minutes at the gym (he had a cardiac arrest). This time around, Jacqui and I talk about all those crashes and learning through the physical and mental pain, getting back in the gym after a thirteen-year absence, her IVF journey and her thoughts around the topic, her white-line fever (her hyper-competitiveness), her transition into professional speaking, her body at fifty, her Bruce McAvaney performance enhancer (it’ll make sense in the show) and lots more. S1 Ep 1122#1122 Understanding Your Brain - Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor

Over five-plus years and eleven hundred-plus episodes, one of my top 3 TYP moments was interviewing Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor; a personal hero of mine. Dr. Bolte delivered my all-time favourite TED talk ‘My Stroke of Insight’ over a decade ago and with complete fascination, I watched this amazing Researcher and Neuro-anatomist share in intricate detail about the day the left hemisphere of her brain went ‘off-line’ courtesy of a burst blood vessel and stroke that almost took her life. The Brain Scientist was able to witness her own brain shutting down and within four hours, she could not speak, read, walk, write or remember anything from her past. Jill compares her stroke to being like an infant again. Her personal experience, her subsequent eight-year recovery and her training as a Brain Scientist provide her with a unique insight into and understanding of, the brain. It also makes her a brilliant teacher. In a world where platitudes are thrown around like verbal frisbees, this woman is truly remarkable, inspirational and brilliant. This episode is a reboot of our conversation from over 500 episodes ago and knowing how much we’ve grown since then, I’m confident it will be new for most of you. I’ll let you come to your own conclusion. And yes, that’s Fritz the wonder-schnauzer in the pic. As always, it was a fun chat and among other things, we spoke about different types of intelligence, computer games that might offer real-world physical benefits, genetic testing in babies to predict and possibly prevent certain illnesses, the rise of ‘deep fake’ scams, why the good guys are struggling to keep up with the bad guys when it comes to cyber-crime, older people being targeted by dirtbag scammers and finally, tiny insertable 3D printers (ouch) which use cultured cells to repair tissue damage in the body; an ‘operation’ with no incision. S1 Ep 1117#1117 How To Be Less Sh*t At Public Speaking - Harps & Tiff

In this episode Tiff and I talk about public speaking, from being the nervous, anxious (terrified) amateur to the highly-paid, competent, confident, entertaining, skilful professional. As objective as I can be about a conversation I was in the middle of, I think most people will find it interesting and some will find it helpful and insightful. We go deep on structure, method, style, creating connection, being in ‘flow’, reading the room, managing nerves, building rapport, developing skill and confidence and I also share a presentation structure that’s ideal for beginners. S1 Ep 1116#1116 How Happiness Works - Cassie Holmes

This was a fascinating chat about happiness; how it works, how it varies from person to person (as an experience), its relationship with self-awareness and gratitude, its relationship with ‘success’ and how it is affected by biology, psychology and sociology. Our guest, Cassie Holmes, is a Professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, she is an expert on time and happiness and also the author of ‘Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most’. Cassie’s research examines such questions as how focusing on time (rather than money) increases happiness, how the meaning of happiness changes over the course of one’s lifetime, and how much happiness people enjoy from extraordinary versus ordinary experiences. I loved my chat with the Prof. Enjoy. cassiemholmes.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1115#1115 The Healing Mind - Harps & Tiff

I recently got together with Tiff on her show (Roll With The Punches) and we chatted all things health, healing, mindset and miracles. Despite the fact that we don’t fully understand placebos or spontaneous healing, there is growing evidence and research to suggest that the mind can play a crucial role in physical health, longevity, immune system function and even seemingly miraculous recoveries.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1111#1111 Raw, Real & Relatable - Grant & Chezzi Denyer

Apart from winning a Gold Logie, hosting Family Feud, The great Australian Spelling Bee, Million Dollar Minute, It Takes Two, Dancing with the Stars, Game of Games, being a contestant on a million other shows, racing V8 supercars, working in radio, winning Dancing with the Stars and being a hubby and dad, Grant Denyer has done f**k all. His wife (Chezzi) on the other hand, is a complete Champ. This was definitely one of the more fun, enjoyable and revealing chats we’ve had on TYP and all silliness aside, both Grant and Chezzi were breath-takingly honest, real and relatable and I totally loved meeting them.
