S1 Ep 1236#1236 The Vibe Of The Tribe - David Samson
I loved this chat and loved this bloke. The way we humans have lived, evolved, adapted, survived, and thrived over the last 300,000 (plus) years is nothing short of fascinating and the good Prof and I took a deep dive, exploring anthropology, sociology, evolution, human behaviour, tribes and more. *David Samson is an Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Toronto, Director of the Sleep and Human Evolution Lab (SHEL) and author of "Our Tribal Future: How to channel our foundational human instincts into a force for good". S1 Ep 1235#1235 Go Home And Die - Kate Swaffer
When Kate Swaffer was diagnosed with 'Younger Onset Dementia' at 49, the advice given to her by the health sector was to go home and die. She was told directly "get your end-of-life affairs in order" and that at best, she had 8-10 years to live. Well, she's now 65 and seems just fine to me. Not only is she defying the odds, her continued health and ability to function (despite her cognitive and neurological issues) has really been inconvenient and annoying for some. I found Kate to be inspiring, insightful and extremely resourceful and creative. You'll love her.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1234#1234 Turning Theory Into Action - Jacqui Louder
Superstar Psychologist, Jacqui Louder, is back and this time we discuss how and why we waste potential (and how not to), creating a good 'reality' in a bad situation, how fear can temporarily impact the skill level of athletes, the balance between supporting people and letting them 'fall down', why some people know what to do but still don't do it, and lots more. Enjoy. performe.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1233#1233 You & Your Brain (Part 1) - Dr. Hannah Korrel
Hi Kiddos. So, I had a chat with our resident Neuro-Psych (Dr. Hannah Korrel) and we decided to record a series of (brief) episodes, focusing on the human brain; the 3lb (1.3-1.4kg) super-computer residing in your skull. We all have one, but very few of us understand how it 'works'. We really tried to keep the jargon and scientific lingo to a minimum, and the understandability and informality to a maximum in these chats. We might call it 'edu-tainment'. Anyway, part one is a big-picture snapshot of the brain and its three core components. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1232#1232 Why Are Most Robots 'Female'? - Patrick Bonello
The Geek (much-loved Geek) is back and this time we talk about why most robots are 'female', the rise of quantum computing, Patrick's disdain for Elon Musk and Starlink, NASA's new 'Mars' experiment, BMW's new 'Mad Max-esque' electric scooter, the potential for government agencies to activate phone cameras and microphones for surveillance, the thumbs-up emoji being legally binding and plenty more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1231#1231 The No. 1 Reason People Fail - Harps
There are hundreds of variables and factors which influence the likelihood of someone succeeding (or failing) and creating lasting change (or not). But there's one key reason why so many people don't achieve what they set out to.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1230#1230 Just Be Yourself (and other stupid advice) - Harps
You literally can't be anyone but yourself. Good or bad, happy. or sad, kind or mean, crying or laughing; it's always you. All the stuff you’ve done in your life… you were there for all of it. And while you can't change 'who' you are, you can change 'how' you are. This episode is me exploring some of the stupid thinking and advice that gets wheeled out as personal development, self-help and even, positive psychology. And potentially, a better plan than ‘be yourself’.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1229#1229 Low-Performance - Harps & Tiff
Sometimes I'm a low-performer. The opposite of a high-performer. Not winning. Not doing great. Not in the zone. Not even a good attitude. Not all the time, sometimes. And that's okay. It makes me human. I recently sat down with Tiff (on Roll with the Punches) and we chatted about the unrealistic and unhealthy expectation (and pressure?) that exists in some groups and self-help echo chambers to be the perpetual high-performing, positive-talking, world-beating, personal-development Unicorn who never has a bad day, always wins, never gets sad or anxious and somehow lives in perpetual state of euphoria and success. Fuck that.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1228#1228 Better With Age - Tommy Jackett
Tommy, Tiff and I discuss the idea (and practical process) of getting better as we get older.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1227#1227 Universal Basic Income - David Gillespie
David Gillespie wandered back into TYP Central and this time we chatted about work-life balance, universal basic income, the pros and cons of retirement, means testing, eliminating poverty and the government printing money to offset debt!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1226#1226 The Duality Of Being Human - Harps
This episode is me banging on about the intersection of our internal and external worlds. Physical and non-physical. Seen and unseen. I don't often say this, but I think many of you will find this message helpful, relevant and maybe even, life-changing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1225#1225 Making It Up As You Go - Tommy & Harps
Videographer extraordinaire and resident pretty boy, Tommy Jackett, is back at TYP for what definitely wasn't a high-brow exchange of philosophy, psychology and/or the meaning of life. It was however, two mates (and Tiff) having a fun discussion about the goings-on of our respective lives. vidpod.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1124#1224 Integrative, Preventative & Regenerative Medicine - Nima Alavi
Nima, our resident Compounding Pharmacist is back and this time, we talk about the idea and practice of a medical model where we don't wait for stuff to break, fixing the underlying problem vs. treating the symptom and the potential therapeutic role of bio-identical hormones and peptides in increasing health span. Enjoy. tailormadehealth.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1223#1223 Hope Is Not A Strategy - Geoff Jowett (PT2)
TYP's favourite Pracademic, Geoff Jowett, is back making us think and laugh with his unique style of coaching, story-telling and educating, and as always, he doesn't disappoint. We lost track of time, so l've made this chat a two-parter. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1222#1222 Hope Is Not A Strategy - Geoff Jowett (PT1)

S1 Ep 1221#1221 Downloading Your Consciousness - Patrick Bonello
The TYP Chief Nerd is back geeking the f**k out about the (predicted) potential for downloading human consciousness into an 'electronic brain' (good grief),'Voicebox Al that can replicate not only your voice, but also the 'way' you speak, the new phone app that can detect skin cancer using pics of your skin, the 14 year-old genius who got a job working for Elon Musk as a Space X Engineer, the new Al that allows to have a ‘conversation with Jesus' and lots more. S1 Ep 1220#1220 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - Dr Paul Harch
Dr Paul Harch is the leading international Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) expert. He is an internationally renowned expert in developing HBOT treatment plans for neurological conditions. His treatment programs and results are unmatched in the field. He has used hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat over 100 different conditions, including stroke, dementia, autism, and traumatic brain injury and this chat is f**king fascinating.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1219#1219 The Mollycoddled - Penny Locaso
Penny Locaso, the Happiness Hacker, is back and this time we discuss her latest research, interviewing 150 amazing women, the nature of trauma (it shows up in different ways), decision fatigue, hedonic adaptation, destination disappointment (when the achievement doesn't translate to the emotional state we thought it would), the point where support turns into mollycoddling, participation trophies, the pursuit of equanimity and lots more. hackinghappy.coLinkedIn: Penny LocasoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1218#1218 The Perks of Being a Pirate - Tom Nash
Tom Nash is inappropriate, funny, clever, atypical, creative and although he would hate me saying it, courageous. It's one thing to survive a life-threatening illness, it's another to thrive and mesmerise audiences around the world as a Keynote Speaker, DJ, and quadruple amputee like it's nobody's business. This is much more than an ‘inspirational chat' (in fact, it's not really that at all); it's a funny, interesting and stimulating conversation with a bloke who lost his limbs and just got on with life. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1217#1217 Are We Living In An Illusion? - Prof. Srikumar Rao
Professor Srikumar Rao operates at the intersection of business, sociology, spirituality, psychology and philosophy and his mission is to help people increase their consciousness, effectiveness, self-awareness and joy. He is an international speaker, bestselling author, and one of the most popular MBA lecturers in America. His courses are among the highest rated at many of the world's top business schools, including Columbia University and The London Business School. The Prof and I chatted about the Matrix (we're living in one, but not the one you think), our self-created illusion, mental and emotional prisons, why identity doesn't matter, raising our consciousness and why the 'idea' of success (how l'll feel when I get there) and the reality of it (how I actually feel when I 'succeed') are rarely the same. Super interesting. Enjoy. theraoinstitute.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1216#1216 Think For Yourself - Melanie Trecek-King
Melanie Trecek-King is an Associate Professor of Biology at Massasoit Community College, where she teaches a general-education science course designed to equip students with empowering critical thinking, information literacy, and science literacy skills. Melanie has created a program called TIP (Thinking is Power) and she is of the opinion (as am I) that, while knowledge is valuable (of course), being able to think critically and independently, is the real superpower. Knowing stuff is great but being able to solve problems, make great decisions, choose our own beliefs, consciously write our own story and recognise the space between our programming and our original thoughts, is where the 'self' (me, you) emerges from the group-think, the group-behaviour, the echo chambers and the enormity of conformity. This was fun chat with a fun person. Enjoy. thinkingispower.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1215#1215 Coaching The Best Athletes In The World - Dr. Andy Galpin
Andy Galpin is a world-renowned guru in coaching, educating and empowering elite athletes (and a few regular humans) to optimise their genetic and sporting potential by effectively managing the relevant performance variables and influencers (sleep, training, recovery, supplementations, nutrition, etc.), so that they might achieve their high-performance goals. And, he's arguably the best in the world at what he does. Andy is a tenured Professor at California State University, Fullerton. He is the Co-Director of the Centre for Sport Performance and Founder/Director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory. He is a Human Performance scientist with a PhD in Human Bioenergetics and over 100 peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Dr. Galpin has worked with elite athletes (including All-Star, All-Pro, MVP, Cy Young, Olympic Gold medallists, Major winners, World titlist/ contenders, etc.) across the UFC, MLB, NBA, PGA, NFL, Boxing, Olympics, and Military/Special Forces, and more. He is also a Co-founder of Absolute Rest, BioMolecular Athlete, and RAPID Health & Performance. andygalpin.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1214#1214 The 102 Year-Old Doctor | Dr. Gladys McGarey
It's official.. I’m in love. Sure, she's a 102. Sure, she lives on the other side of the world and sure, she has zero interest in me but nonetheless, I love her. And so will you. Dr Gladys McGarey was born in 1920 and began her medical practice at a time when women couldn't even have their own bank account. This is one of my all-time favourite episodes and it was a complete privilege to meet and chat with Dr. Gladys.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1213#1213 Destination Disappointment - Dr. Hannah Korrel
So often, there's something about our existence (body, bank balance, career, situation, relationship status) that we want to change (do, be, create, achieve) and then when we get 'there', boom.. we're happy. And fulfilled. Content. Calm. Good in theory, but... nah. In fact, hard nah. We often get there (reach our target destination), only to 'realise' (believe) that we need to lose just 3 more kilos. Earn $20K more. Run 5 minutes faster. Have that body part just a little bigger or smaller. Get ten percent more followers. And then... we'll be happy. Forever. Again... nah. This chat with Doctor Hannah was totally spontaneous (as is often the way), as we planned to discuss a completely different topic but nonetheless, I think you'll enjoy it. @nobullpsych hannahkorrel.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1212#1212 The Science Of Hypnosis - Dr. David Spiegel (PT2)
This chat was f**king fascinating, I learned a lot, the Doc is brilliant and I loved him. Not surprisingly, he has a somewhat hypnotic voice and energy. No pun intended. I think it's fair to say that the majority of us don't truly understand the science of hypnosis, it's numerous applications or its potential for healing, helping and treating a range of physical, mental and emotional conditions. *BIO: Dr. David Spiegel is Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences, Director of the Centre on Stress and Health, and Medical Director of the Centre for Integrative Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he has been a member of the academic faculty since 1975. S1 Ep 1210#1210 Healing Identity & False Beliefs - Dr Jeffrey Rediger
This time, the Doc and I discuss healing our identity and false beliefs, his fascinating backstory growing up in an abusive religious cult, the masks we wear, reprogramming our mind, body, and emotions after a lifetime of indoctrination and manipulation, the burden of trauma (Jeffrey experienced plenty), the power of perception, the psychology of trust and lots more. Apart from being a physician, best-selling author and in-demand speaker, Jeffrey Rediger is also an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, a world-renowned researcher, author and expert in the investigation of spontaneous healing, he has a Master's degree in Divinity from Princeton, has received numerous awards, has written a bestseller (Cured: Strengthen Your Immune System and Heal Your Life), appeared on Oprah and Dr. Oz and now in his career highlight... is back chatting with the Bogan from Latrobe Valley.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1209#1209 Used-By Date - Harps
Bread and milk aren't the only things which have used-by dates. Jobs have used-by dates. As do some relationships. And lifestyles. And habits. And mindsets. But sadly, many of us keep doing the thing that 'doesn't work' long beyond its expiration date.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1208#1208 Pink Jail Cells - David Gillespie
I loved this episode. Super interesting. The great man and I talked about why we shouldn't wash our hair (with shampoo), why fibre is over-rated, the link between vegetable oil and Parkinson's disease, why you shouldn't lather your kids (or you) in (most) sunscreens, why harsher penalties aren't the solution to youth crime, why many experts won't listen to new research, the one expert who found a flaw in the science in his super popular book and then got rejected by his own followers (because he changed his stance) and why pink paint can reduce violent behaviour and crime. davidgillespie.orgSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1207#1207 Let's Talk Drugs (& Other Stuff) - Nima Alavi
Nima Alavi is back talking drugs (he’s a Pharmacist) and we open the conversational door on personalised medicine, a woman with multiple personalities who has different medical conditions depending on the personality, the power of placebos, the impact of stress, the physical consequences of loneliness, menopause and andropause, vaping and the weight-loss drug that’s all the craze, Ozempic. slimrx.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1206#1206 Code Like A Girl - Ally Watson
Ally Watson OAM is the Founder and CEO of 'Code Like A Girl'. She is a Software Engineer, Backend Developer (whatever that means) and Computer Science graduate with a passion and plan to empower girls and women to work in tech, and she's doing it! S1 Ep 1205#1205 Project You - Harps & Tiff
This episode is a co-share I did with young Tiff. In the midst of our preamble, which was intended to lead into a completely different topic, we found ourselves doing a deep dive into all-things mind-management, body management and in general, human optimisation. From genetics, to improving with age (both cognitively and physically) we threw around some ideas, lessons learned, thoughts and strategies around the relationship we humans have (and can have) with our physical, mental and emotional health.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1204#1204 Alone In A Crowd - Jacqui Louder
Jacqui Louder is one of Australia's most successful and respected Sport Psychologists, a good mate and my one-time co-host from my radio days. This was an interesting conversation, which began with a question around being alone in a crowd. Many of us have felt disconnected, irrelevant and isolated in a room full of people. If that's you, listen to this.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1203#1203 A Subjective Life - Harps
There's the thing that's happening and there's your story about the thing that's happening. There's the situation, circumstance and event and there's your individual response to those things. There's THE world and there's your world. Thousands of people will listen to this episode but nobody will have an identical listening experience. Some will love it. Some will hate it. A person's experience of my words is less about the words (themselves) and more about an individual response (reaction) to the words and my delivery of those words. You and I can be in the same conversation while having a totally different experience. Same and different. We humans love the idea of being objective and open-minded (it makes us feel good) but is it really possible?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1202#1202 The Beatles Are Back - Patrick Bonello
Patrick's back and we were all over the metaphoric shop in this one. Distractions. Tangents. Terrible segues. Nonetheless, we covered some interesting stuff, including the eight year-old girl who received a donor heart and subsequently had accurate nightmares identifying the perpetrator who murdered the ten year-old girl whose heart she received (really), why lying on forms which require your private details can be a good idea, the downside of being in space, how the 'Beatles' are releasing a new song (literally), some important cybersecurity tips, the safest search engine, Patrick's thoughts on 'cookies' (not the choc-chip type), a cashless world, my declining eyesight and a remote-control pill-shaped camera being used to diagnose GI issues (that comes out yer bum!). EnjoySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1201#1201 The World Within - Jem Fuller
There's the world we're in, and there's the world in us. One is where life happens, the other is where living happens. One is about our life situation, the other is about our life experience. One seen, one unseen. Jem Fuller is an Author, Corporate Speaker, Facilitator, Eternal Optimist, Good Bloke and I was lucky enough to chat with him about our worlds. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1200#1200 Love Languages - Harps
Gary Chapman's book 'The 5 Love Languages' was first published in 1992.I read it the same year and it was like a curtain had been pulled back in my brain to reveal some beautiful wisdom and insight that would help me understand, connect with, serve, and love others. Specifically, to understand the way we humans give, receive and experience love (in all its many forms). I'm definitely no expert in this area but (for better or worse) I decided to share some of my thoughts, ideas and personal experiences around this fascinating concept (love languages). By the way, I have never met Mr Chapman (Chappers) and have no relationship with him but I feel compelled to acknowledge his work in this space. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1199#1199 A Psych For Sore Minds - Dr. Sohom Das
Dr. Sohom Das is an interesting bloke with a super cool job (well, he likes it) and we had a great chat about all-things psychopathy, criminality, sociology, world-class liars, Forensic Psychiatry (his job), stand-up comedy (his passion), prison (where he often works), murderers (who he often assesses), Will Smith (his thoughts on the infamous slap) and Sohom also shared a few fascinating stories about some of the people he has worked with. The Doc has a new(ish) book called 'In Two Minds: Stories of Murder, Justice and Recovery from a Forensic Psychiatrist' and a ripper YouTube channel called 'A Psych For Sore Minds'. This was fun. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1198#1198 The Science Of Conversation - Prof. Elizabeth Stokoe
Yep, conversation is a science. Who knew? There's actually mountains of research which analyses effective (and ineffective) conversation and provides great insight into what works (in a chat) and what doesn't. As somebody whose job is literally conversations, I was super interested in this... conversation (sorry) and it didn't disappoint. Professor Elizabeth Stokoe is a social psychologist who has spent over twenty years collecting and analysing real conversations across settings as varied as first dates, crisis negotiation, sales encounters and medical communication. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1197#1197 Virtual Me (And You) - Patrick Bonello
According to our loveable resident nerd Patrick, in the not-too-distant-future (coupla years), I'll be able to 'stand on a stage on the opposite side of the world' (well, a 3-D hologram version of me), deliver a presentation, see the audience, interact with the audience and be 'back home', as soon as I'm done. Sh*t's gettin' weird folks. This was a fun one. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1196#1196 My Life In Hiding - Laura Cathcart Robbins
From the outside looking in, Laura Cathcart Robbins was a picture of success; happy, healthy, wealthy, respected, connected and admired. Or so it appeared. But behind the persona, the picture and the story, was the reality of a woman battling to navigate life with a debilitating addiction, a huge secret and a world of mental and emotional pain. Laura is the author of the brand new 'Stash: My Life in Hiding' and this conversation was a fascinating insight into the physical, mental, emotional and social challenges that so many of us deal with. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1195#1195 Atypical Ideas To Keep You Young - Harps
How do we keep ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally younger than our chronological age? How can we maintain our level of functional health (or even improve it) as we get older? In this episode, I share some not-so-typical strategies that are both simple and effective (when they're applied). Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1194#1194 Addiction Is Profitable - David Gillespie
Today (June 7, 2023) David wrote a fascinating article for substack.com titled 'Nicotine: The Free Will Assassin'. *An Insight into the Destructive Consequences of Smoking and Vaping, and the Uphill Battle Against Nicotine's Grip on Society. S1 Ep 1192#1192 Learn, Give, Live - Bobby Cappuccio
Bobby and I have been friends for decades and he's been on TYP many times talking about personal development, sociology, psychology and all-things human behaviour. But this episode is very different. We've chatted briefly (before) about him growing up in a violent, abusive and loveless home but this time, he opens the door wide and we discuss the numerous challenges of navigating life with brain damage, Tourette's, ADHD, learning difficulties, behavioural and emotional regulation issues, severe anxiety, trust issues and lots more. I know it sounds like a depressing conversation but I found it fascinating, educational, and ultimately, uplifting. Enjoy. theselfhelpantidote.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1191#1191 Addicted To Drama - Dr. Scott Lyons
Dr. Scott Lyons is a recovering drama addict. And no, I'm not using that term as a metaphor or analogy. As a clinician, Scott describes himself (and many others) as having been (or still being) addicted to drama. Who knew it was a thing? Well, it is and this was a fascinating and different conversation that l'm sure will resonate with many. Who is Dr. Scott Lyons? He is a licensed holistic psychologist, educator and author of the book ‘Addicted to Drama: Healing Dependency on Crisis and Chaos in Yourself and Others.' Scott is a renowned body-based trauma expert, Doctor of Osteopathy Mind-Body Medicine specialist and has been featured in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, ForbesWomen, Fast Company, The Telegraph, The Guardian, INC., CNBC Make It, Fortune, Bustle, and Reader's Digest. And now, in what is clearly the pinnacle of his career, he drops by TYP Central to wax lyrical about the human condition. Enjoy. drscottlyons.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1190#1190 Finding A Way - Bart Walsh
Bart Walsh is a younger, smarter me. He is the head of fitness for Jetts (gyms) Australia and he's a deep-thinking, talented, interesting, interested, and inspirational young man, who has been through some serious sh*t and somehow, just keeps rolling on. I had no real expectations (good or bad) going into this chat because I knew very little about Bart, but it's fair to say I was impressed. I won't share any of his story here because I don't want to ruin the listen but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1189#1189 The Power Of Kindness - Harps & Patrick
Our intended tech-talk with Patrick didn't eventuate, as our pre-show catch up turned into a 45-minute chat about his surprise recent illness, a hospital stay and some lightbulb moments and realisations to come from that experience. I know it sounds obvious and cheesy to suggest that kindness is powerful, healing and potentially transformational, but sometimes life has a way of reminding us, grounding us, and providing us with an attitude of gratitude that's easy to lose in the mayhem. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1188#1188 It's A Question Of Questions - Harps
On Planet Me, there's an absolute correlation between the quality of the questions I ask myself and others (solution-focused, intelligent, curious questions) and the quality of my subsequent decisions, actions, interactions and outcomes. In short, better questions produces better results. This episode is me riffing about that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S1 Ep 1187#1187 The Hope Smuggler - Shaka Senghor
Different episodes resonate with different people, but from the almost 1,200 episodes of TYP that I've recorded, this conversation sits comfortably in my all-time top 5. I truly loved it and wish it could have gone for longer. In 1991, Shaka Senghor entered prison for committing second-degree murder. Today, he's a best-selling author, lecturer at universities, and leading voice on criminal justice reform. Raised in a middle-class neighbourhood on Detroit's east side during the height of the 1980s crack epidemic, Shaka was an honour roll student and a natural leader who dreamed of becoming a doctor. But at age 11, his parents' marriage began to unravel. The beatings from his mother worsened, sending him on a downward spiral that saw him run away from home. On the streets, he quickly turned to drug dealing to survive, running crack houses and getting caught up in the hopelessness of the life that surrounded the epidemic. At 18, he was shot in an altercation in front of his home. By 19, he was in prison for murder, fuming with anger and despair. During his 19 years incarcerated- including seven in solitary confinement -Shaka began a journey of self-reflection, inspired by reading and writing as a means of understanding his past, his present, and his future potential. By embracing forgiveness, hope, and everything that's possible when you refuse to be defined by your past, he's become a leading voice on the potential inherent in us all when given support and a second chance. In the decade since his release, he's garnered awards and fellowships, lectured at universities, started and worked with non-profits seeking to lift people up, visited the White House, been interviewed by Trevor Noah and Oprah Winfrey, given award-winning TED talks, featured in a song with Nas, and tirelessly worked to help create the personal and societal change we need for a more inspired, just, fulfilling future. shakasenghor.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
