Ep 185Do It Afraid: A Conversation with Kent Chevalier
Fear is something we all face...especially when we’re stepping into something new. In this episode of The Wherever You Go Podcast, I’m joined by Kent Chevelier, chaplain for the Pittsburgh Steelers and author of the upcoming book Do It Afraid. While Kent has spent years walking alongside athletes in high-pressure environments, this conversation centers on his own journey, moving from comfort into the unknown and choosing obedience even when fear was present. We talk about obedience, calling, and what it really looks like to trust God when the next step feels uncertain. If you’re standing at the edge of something new or maybe something that's not new, but that has been pressing on your heart for years, this episode will remind you that you don’t have to be fearless to move forward, you just have to be willing. Still Standing: A Word For Tired Business Owners
Owning a business is hard, even (and sometimes especially) when it’s part of God’s calling. In this episode, Sam encourages business owners not to trust their feelings when doubt creeps in. Just because you feel like you’re failing doesn’t mean you are. We talk about why our emotions can mislead us, how Scripture anchors us in truth, and what it looks like to lean on God when the weight of leadership feels heavy. If you’ve been questioning your capability, your calling, or whether you should keep going, this conversation is for you. In This Episode: •Why feelings are real but unreliable •What Scripture says about our hearts and emotions •Why hardship doesn’t mean you missed God •How mistakes shape growth and perseverance •What it looks like to rely on God instead of yourself Scriptures referenced: Jeremiah 17:9, John 16:33, James 1:2–4, 2 Corinthians 12:9, Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
🎙️ Your Circle Shapes You: Why Who You Spend Time With Matters
We’ve all heard the quote that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with and it’s true. The people closest to us shape our habits, our mindset, our values, and our character. In this episode, Sam shares why Christians not only need to surround themselves with wise and successful people, but especially with successful Christians whose lives reflect integrity, humility, and obedience to God. She also reminds listeners that the most important relationship of all is the one we have with the Lord. If we want to become more like Christ, we must intentionally spend time with Him in Scripture, prayer, worship, and stillness. Key Scriptures: Proverbs 13:20 1 Corinthians 15:33 John 15:4–5 🎧 Listen now and consider: Who are the five voices shaping your life…and is God one of them?
Not Faith in Business, but Business in Faith
Many people ask how to “incorporate faith into business,” but in this episode, Sam shares a foundational truth: we don’t add faith to our work, we bring our work into our faith. We are not business owners who love God. We are children of God who happen to own businesses. Sam encourages listeners to see their identity as sons and daughters first, remembering that the Holy Spirit doesn’t clock out when we clock in. Our work becomes a place to reflect God’s love, character, and integrity, not a place to use Christianity as a marketing strategy. Instead of trying to put God into our business, we’re called to simply live as who we already are , people filled with the Spirit of God, wherever we go. Key Scriptures: •1 John 3:1 •Galatians 2:20 •Colossians 3:23–24 •John 13:35 •1 Corinthians 3:6–7 🎧 Listen now and be encouraged to live as a child of God first, in business, leadership, and all of life.
To see and be seen: Finding joy in connection
In a world where so many people feel unseen and alone, a simple smile or moment of eye contact can make a powerful difference. In this episode, Sam shares how choosing to see others reflects the heart of God, the God who sees us. She also reminds listeners that our relationship with God isn’t just about being known by Him, but also about getting to know Him. The more we learn who He is, the more clearly we discover who we are in Him. Key Scriptures: •Genesis 16:13 “You are the God who sees me.” •Psalm 139:1–4 “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.” •John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” 🎧 Listen now and be encouraged to slow down, see others the way God does, and find joy in truly knowing Him.
Faith at work: Resilience, Rest, and Relationships
In this episode, Sam shares how God used her first year in business to teach her three best practices that continue to shape her life and leadership: 1.Resilience – Keep showing up and trust God, even when it’s hard. 2.Rest – Protect what matters most and honor the boundaries God calls you to. 3.Relationships – Love people well and trust that God has the right ones lined up for you. You’ll hear real stories about learning to trust God in difficult seasons, finding peace in rest, and building genuine connections in business. If you’ve ever wondered how to stay faithful and grounded when life feels heavy, this message will remind you that your job is obedience, and the outcome belongs to Him.
The gift we can’t earn: learning to accept God’s grace
We live in a world where everything has to be earned: success, approval, even love. But grace doesn’t work that way. God’s grace is a gift we could never earn and don’t deserve. In this episode, Sam shares how striving to earn God’s love misses the beauty of His unearned grace. She also reminds listeners that our view of God is often shaped by our earthly fathers, but God is not a bigger version of our dad. He is perfect in love, mercy, and compassion, and His grace is unlike anything else we’ll ever experience. Key Scriptures: •Ephesians 2:8–9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.” •Titus 3:5: “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” •Psalm 103:13: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” 🎧 Listen now and be reminded: God’s grace can’t be earned, only received.
Self-Help Is No Help: The Way of Self-Sacrifice
Our culture is obsessed with self-help, believing that if you try harder, manifest more, or believe in yourself enough, you’ll find confidence, growth, and success. But Scripture shows us a different way. In this episode, Sam unpacks why self-help is no help at all, and why self-sacrifice, through humility and obedience, is the way of Christ. The Christian life is about emptying ourselves so that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit, who equips us to walk in God’s strength instead of our own. You’ll learn what it looks like to surrender your marriage, family, career, and success to God’s hands, and be challenged to reflect on the parts of your heart that need to be laid down at the cross. Key Scriptures: •Luke 9:23 — “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” •Philippians 2:3–7 — “Christ Jesus… made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” 🎧 Listen now and be reminded: strength and courage don’t come from self-help, but from God being with us wherever we go.
Valuing Human Life and Loving Like God
🎙️ The Value of Human Life Every human life has value, not because of opinions, politics, or religion, but because our sovereign God created every living person. And everything He creates is valuable to Him. In this episode, Sam encourages listeners to see people as God sees them: valuable, loved, and worthy of dignity. She challenges Christians to love and understand others, even when they disagree, and to remember that love is light in the darkness. And while we are called to love, Scripture also tells us that the world will not always receive that love. Jesus warned His followers to expect opposition for following Him. Even so, we can stand strong, be courageous, and keep reflecting His love. Key Scriptures: •Genesis 1:27 •Psalm 139:13–14 •John 3:16 •1 John 4:7–8 •John 15:18–19 •Matthew 5:10–11 🎧 Listen now and be reminded: if life is valuable to God, it should be valuable to us and our love should shine even when it’s costly.

Unlearning Self Help: Boundaries and Broken Relationships
🎙️ Episode 5: Boundaries & Broken Relationships: What God Really Says About Offense Series: Unlearning Self-Help; 5 Lies and the Truth That Sets You Free Culture says: “Protect your peace. Cut out toxic people. Cancel anyone who offends you.” But is that really God’s way? In this final episode of the Unlearning Self-Help series, Sam explores the difference between healthy, God-honoring boundaries and the world’s call to cut people out of our lives. You’ll discover how to guard your heart with wisdom, forgive those who offend you, and live at peace with others, without falling into cancel culture. Key Scriptures: •Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” •Matthew 5:44 “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” •Colossians 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive one another…” •Romans 12:18 “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” 🎧 Listen now and be reminded: boundaries are wise, but love and forgiveness are always the way of Jesus.
Unlearning Self Help: Episode 4, Faith over Fantasy
🎙️ Episode 4 — Faith Over Fantasy: Why Manifesting Falls Short Manifestation promises that you can create your own reality if you visualize it strongly enough. But here’s the truth: manifesting is just fantasy. In this episode, Sam unpacks the cultural obsession with manifesting, why it ultimately falls short, and how biblical faith sets us free from the pressure to control our own outcomes. You’ll discover that peace doesn’t come from speaking things into the universe — it comes from trusting the God who spoke the universe into being. Key Scriptures: •Hebrews 11:1 — “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” •Proverbs 16:9 — “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” •Matthew 6:33 — “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” 🎧 Listen now to Episode 4 in the Unlearning Self Help Series of The Wherever You Go Podcast and be reminded: faith is stronger than fantasy — because God is faithful.
Unlearning self help: Episode 3 Hustle Isn’t Holy
Series: Unlearning Self-Help — 5 Lies and the Truth That Sets You Free ⸻ Hustle culture says your worth is tied to how much you produce. God says your value is found in Him — and He calls you to both work diligently and rest deeply. In this episode, Sam unpacks why hustle isn’t holy, how rest is an act of trust, and how to live in the balance of working hard where God calls you while also trusting Him with the results. ⸻ Key Scriptures: •Proverbs 13:4 — “The soul of the diligent shall be made rich.” •Psalm 127:2 — “In vain you rise early and stay up late… for He grants sleep to those He loves.” •Matthew 11:28 — “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
Unlearning Self Help Series, Episode 2 Your brand is not your identity
In a world that tells us “your brand is everything,” it’s easy to start believing that who we are is wrapped up in what we create, post, or produce. But when your identity is tied to your platform, you’ll always feel pressure to perform. In this episode, Sam unpacks the lie that your brand defines you — and replaces it with the truth of God’s Word: your identity is not something you build, it’s something you receive. Whether you’re a business owner, content creator, or simply someone who’s been caught in the trap of image over authenticity, this conversation will help you rest in who you are in Christ, not what you produce. ⸻ Key Scriptures: •Colossians 3:3 — “Your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” •Galatians 2:20 — “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” ⸻ 🎧 Listen now and be reminded: your brand can change, but your identity in Christ never will.
Unlearning Self-Help Episode 1: You are not enough (But Jesus is)
Culture tells us we are enough — that we can fix ourselves, fulfill ourselves, and find our worth from within. But what if that message is quietly crushing us? In this kickoff episode of the Unlearning Self-Help series, Sam dives into the popular belief that “you are enough” and lovingly replaces it with the freedom of biblical truth: You were never meant to be enough. Jesus already is. Through Scripture, personal reflection, and grace-filled truth, you’ll be invited to lay down the pressure to perform and pick up the peace of walking in your identity in Christ. ⸻ 📖 Key Scriptures: •Colossians 2:10 — “In Christ, you have been brought to fullness.” •John 15:5 — “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.” •2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you…”

Season 3 Episode 1: Where does our strength come from?
Season 3 Episode 1 (new year, new season!) is inspired by Deuteronomy 31:6 and the many times in the Bible that God says to be strong. Be strong. He makes it sound so easy.
