How Personally Do I Take Things? - Thoughts from Kevin

Welcome to another episode of the Remarkable Leadership Podcast! In this episode, Kevin Eikenberry poses a thought-provoking question: "How personally do I take things?" Join Kevin as he delves into the effects of taking things personally and shares practical strategies to help you handle such situations more effectively. Whether you're a leader or simply looking to improve your communication skills, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable advice. Key Points Discussed: Reflecting on Personal Reactions: Kevin begins by asking listeners to ponder their own experiences with taking things personally and the impact it has on conversations and relationships. The Consequences of Defensiveness: How defensiveness can derail communication and lead to misunderstandings. Strategies to Manage Personal Reactions: Assume Positive Intent: Start by believing that others have good intentions, even if it's hard to see. Assume Benign Intent: If positive intent is too difficult, consider that their actions may not be about you at all. Focus on Your Response: Sometimes it's best to not worry about their intent and concentrate on how you respond. Take a Deep Breath: A simple deep breath can help you stay calm and avoid a defensive reaction. Remove Yourself Temporarily: When necessary, step away from the situation to cool down and revisit the conversation later. Ask Clarifying Questions: Stay curious and ask questions to understand the other person's perspective better. Focus on Learning: Shift your focus to what you can learn from the feedback, even if you don't agree with it. Final Thoughts: Kevin emphasizes that while these strategies can be challenging, they are ultimately helpful in improving communication and relationships. How to Lead and Delegate More Effectively with Dave Kerpen

How well do you delegate? Do you struggle to hand things off? Can you hand over tasks, but watch your team with an eagle eye? Neither of those will build organizational success. Kevin sits down with Dave Kerpen to explore the art of delegation, discussing why many leaders struggle with it and how to do it more effectively. Dave shares the five C's of effective delegation: 1. Choose Carefully: Select the right person or team for the task based on skill and fit, not just proximity or convenience. 2. Communicate Clearly: Clearly outline the expected outcome, allowing the individual to determine the best path to achieve it. Include the 'why' to provide context and purpose. 3. Coach and Cheer: Act more as a coach than a manager, offering support and guidance rather than micromanaging. 4. Check in Regularly: Establish a routine for check-ins to provide feedback and make course corrections as needed without overwhelming the delegate with constant updates. 5. Congratulate: Celebrate successes and provide constructive feedback to encourage improvement and acknowledge good work. Is it better to prioritize making tasks quick and easy, or should you consider making them slower and more difficult? Wiring the Winning Organization with Gene Kim

How can leaders wire their organizations to win? Gene Kim explains that work consists of three layers - the objects we work on, the tools we use, and the social connections between people. Successful leaders focus on this third "social circuitry" layer to integrate functions, remove barriers, create independence between teams, amplify weak signals of failure, and practice "slowification" - strategically slowing down to speed up long-term results. He also introduces two other principles - "simplification" and "amplification." Simplification involves breaking down complex problems into manageable parts, while amplification focuses on creating a management system that ensures even the weakest signals of failure are detected and addressed early. Meet Gene Gene's Story: Gene Kim is the co-author of several influential books, including The Unicorn Project, The Phoenix Project, and The DevOps Handbook. His latest book is Wiring the Winning Organization. Gene was the founder and CTO of Tripwire, Inc for 13 years, an enterprise security software company. In 2014, he launched DevOps Enterprise Summit, an annual event that has attracted over 10,000 technology leaders to date. He has spoken at over 100 companies and conferences, including Apple, Target, IBM, Nike, Principal Financial, lululemon, and Microsoft. His books have sold over 1 million copies. https://itrevolution.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/realgenekim/ Book Recommendations Wiring the Winning Organization: Liberating Our Collective Greatness through Slowification, Simplification, and Amplification by Gene Kim and Steven J.
