What tech do you need, and what to do if it fails…

One of the greatest sources of frustration for CRTs is managing technology in the various schools. You may be a tech-wizard but no matter how advanced your tech skills, there is something about the various platforms and school ICT programs that will be confounding. It may be as simple as uncharged iPads, or incorrect passwords, but somewhere you will be the victim of a tech stuff-up. This week the panel discuss the basics of managing technology in schools and more importantly what you can do if things, (as they inevitably do), go wrong.Professional Development OpportunityProfessional learning may include:•seminars, conferences, workshops and online learning•collegiate meetings and professional conversations focused on improving practice and outcomes for learners•participation in education-related boards, committees or panels. This episode focuses on:Australian Professional Standards for Teachers2.6 Information and Communication Technology (ICT)3.4 Select and use resources4.2 Manage classroom activities4.5Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethicallyLooking for work? It is not unusual for CRTs to encounter significant behavioural challenges in schools. And at times it seems that some student behaviours push the boundaries too far. In these circumstances what options do school have? We often here the terms ‘suspension’ and ‘expulsion’ discussed. But how are these consequences managed in schools, and what are the complexities that surround these decisions? Join the panel as they discuss these matters. The Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0

The VTLM 2.0, an updated educational framework for Victorian government schools, focuses on evidence-based teaching practices based on cognitive science, neuroscience, and educational psychology. It simplifies the previous model into two main sets of elements: four elements of learning (attention, knowledge and memory, retention and recall, and mastery and application) and four elements of teaching (planning, enabling learning, explicit teaching, and supported application). At its core, VTLM 2.0 emphasises explicit teaching, which involves clear learning objectives, building on prior knowledge, breaking new information into manageable chunks, modelling, scaffolding practice, and timely feedback to manage students’ cognitive load effectively. As a CRT, it’s crucial to grasp the VTLM 2.0 components and their impact on your work in schools in the coming years. Join the panel’s preliminary discussion of the model and ensure you participate in this significant initiative.Professional Development OpportunityProfessional learning may include:•seminars, conferences, workshops and online learning•collegiate meetings and professional conversations focused on improving practice and outcomes for learners•participation in education-related boards, committees or panels. This episode focuses on:Australian Professional Standards for Teachers1.2 Understand how students learn2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area3.1 Establish challenging learning goals3.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs3.3 Use teaching strategies3.4 Select and use resources3.5 Use effective classroom communication3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practiceLooking for work? Working with Education Support Staff

It is not unusual for a CRT to work alongside one or a number of Education Support Staff in classrooms. Understanding the role of an ES, and being able to quickly establish rapport can make a huge difference to your day, and consequently make a huge difference to how well you manage the student(s) in their care. In this week’s episode the panel discuss the roles and responsibilities of ES staff, how their knowledge and commitment can be a huge help for any CRT, and how to best manage these situations and relationships.Professional Development OpportunityProfessional learning may include:•seminars, conferences, workshops and online learning•collegiate meetings and professional conversations focused on improving practice and outcomes for learners•participation in education-related boards, committees or panels. This episode focuses on:Australian Professional Standards for Teachers1.1 Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students1.2 Understand how students learn1.3 Students with diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds1.4Differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities4.1 Support student participation4.2 Manage classroom activities6.3 Engage with colleagues and improve practice7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilitiesLooking for work? What Not To Talk About in Classrooms

Relief teaching can be hard work and from time to time we all have difficult days. Sometimes unfortunately, and unwittingly, CRTS can find themselves in tricky situations where potentially controversial topics arise. What do you do in these circumstances? How do you protect the welfare of all students in your care and indeed protect yourself from becoming embroiled in a matter you might be best to avoid. This week a salutary note from the panel as they outline topics best not discussed in classrooms, as well as outlining strategies for dealing with controversial topics that may be legitimate parts of the curriculum, but nonetheless potentially divisive.Professional learning may include:•seminars, conferences, workshops and online learning•collegiate meetings and professional conversations focused on improving practice and outcomes for learners•participation in education-related boards, committees or panels. This episode focuses on:Australian Professional Standards for Teachers4.1 Support student participation4.2 Manage classroom activities4.3 Manage challenging behaviour4.4 Maintain student safety7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirementsLooking for work? Working in Specialist Settings - Jacana School for Autism

Many relief teachers are hesitant to work in specialist settings, not due to a lack of interest or care, but often because they are uncertain about the specific requirements. However, teachers who do work in these environments frequently return, finding the experience incredibly rewarding. In this episode, the podcast team visits Jacana School for Autism and interviews a leading teacher with the goal of demystifying the environment and encouraging educators to consider roles in specialist schools. Synthetic Phonics – What You Need to Know as a CRT

In 2025 every Victorian Government school, and all Catholic schools, will teach synthetic phonics in the lower grades as part of their literacy programs. This approach to literacy is likely to be a significant change for many schools and as a CRT you will be expected to be on board with these changes from the very start of the year. If you have no or limited experience with synthetic phonics this week’s podcast will give you a brief overview of what to expect and how you can source sufficient knowledge and resources to get underway with the synthetic phonics approach. In thirty minutes we can’t cover every aspect but it will be a great way to start.Professional Development OpportunityProfessional learning may include:•seminars, conferences, workshops and online learning•collegiate meetings and professional conversations focused on improving practice and outcomes for learners•participation in education-related boards, committees or panels. This episode focuses on:Australian Professional Standards for Teachers1.3 Understand how students learn2.5 Literacy and numeracy strategies3.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs3.3 Use teaching strategies3.4 Select and use resources4.2 Manage classroom activities6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice6.4 Apply professional learning and improve student learning7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilitiesLooking for work? Your CRT Toolkit

In an ideal world every CRT would arrive early at a school to find the timetable, lessons, resources and behaviour management plans all perfectly laid out, easily accessed and students ready to learn. The IT would work seamlessly and yard duty would be short, the day fine and agreeable. But as we all know…that is unlikely. So you need to be prepared. What do you do if there are no lessons, the IT password fails and you are on duty in the Antarctic? Well you need your own toolkit. Your personal Ms Fixit. But what to take? What is going to turn a messy day into a good one?
