The Writers Strike Is Over But What Does That Mean For Your Favourite TV Show?
Nearly five months ago, Hollywood writers went on strike, bringing the TV and movie industry to a standstill. The Writers Guild of America, which represents more than 11,000 screenwriters, led the demands for better pay, staffing minimums and protections against AI on the work of writers. Now, after a tentative deal was reached with entertainment companies over the weekend and accepted on Wednesday, writers are free to return to work this week. This has been one of the longest strikes in the Writer’s Guild’s history – so what has it achieved? What does the deal outline? And what does all of this mean for us as TV and movie watchers for the rest of 2023? Today we’re going to look at the writer’s strikes and what writers managed to negotiate for themselves after months of protesting. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Can These Aussie Pollies Save Julian Assange?
Julian Assange has been one of the most divisive and talked-about figures of the past two decades. In 2006, Assange founded Wikileaks and came to international attention in 2010 after publishing a trove of leaked classified US military documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Alongside those documents Wikileaks published shocking footage that rippled around the world of a US airstrike in Baghdad in which an American crew shot down Iraqi civilians, including two staff working for Reuters news. For the publication of this classified information and other allegations, Assange has been a wanted man for many years. Now, a large group of Australian politicians are joining forces to lobby the US government to stop their legal pursuit of Queensland-born Assange. So, why after more than 10 years is this group of MPs stepping in now? And will they succeed in finally bringing Assange home a free man? Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Could NZ's Experience Teach Us About The Voice To Parliament?
Australia is closing in on the referendum that could change the constitution and establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. The referendum is going to be held on Saturday October 14th, where Australians will be given the opportunity to vote on enshrining recognition of First Nations people in our constitution. But while the idea of a First Nations body speaking directly to government might be a first for Australia, it’s far from a first for the world. There are a number of other countries who have representative bodies and mechanisms built into their governments, some for a really long time, including in Aotearoa New Zealand. So, how do those systems work? And what lessons can we learn from them? Today, we’re going to take a deep dive into how some countries have built First Nations recognition into their parliaments – and how effective they’ve been. The Birth Trauma Inquiry: Maternity's Me Too Moment
Last week an inquiry began in NSW, with tearful evidence from a woman named Naomi Bowden, who recalled the treatment she received at Wollongong Hospital after the stillbirth of her baby Bella more than a decade ago. In her written submission, she had described how she felt when police took her baby’s body from her after being forced to identify her newborn, how the baby had been placed on her chest floppy, white and unresponsive despite what had appeared to be a textbook pregnancy, how weeks later at an appointment, staff questioned her about where her baby was, overworked nurses not having the time to read through her notes. This is the first of thousands of submissions to the inquiry regarding a phenomena known as birth trauma, sometimes referred to as obstetric violence or obstetric rape, where women have had experiences during labour that have left them scarred physically, mentally and emotionally. Today, the Quicky team looks at how this inquiry hopes to change things and how the truth telling will not be easy. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! Unused Flight Credits & Billions In Profit, Why It's Expensive To Fly In Australia
This week, outgoing Qantas boss Alan Joyce and Jetstar CEO Steph Tully were questioned by a Senate enquiry about the Australian airline market, skyrocketing airfares, flight cancellations and unused pandemic credits. We learned that Qantas and Jetstar were holding on to close to $500 million of our unused flight credits, that all have an expiration of December 31 this year. In this episode of The Quicky we find out why airfares are still so high, and just why haven't we all cashed in our flight credits.
