Could The US Embryos Ruling Ever Happen Here? Matildas Off To Paris With A Bang & ASIO Reveals Politician Spy
When a patient at a fertility clinic wandered into an Alabama cryogenic embryo storage room in 2020, they caused a chain of events that has left the US state's IVF sector reeling. Several embryos were destroyed when the patient dropped them. Three couples brought lawsuits against the clinic; which lead to the question: Is a frozen embryo considered a child under Alabama state law? Well, the Supreme Court of Alabama ruled that, yes, a frozen embryo is indeed a child. In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at the implications of this High Court decision, and the likelihood of something like this happening here in our own IVF clinics. PM: Unlikely Samantha Murphy Will Be Found Alive
The Quicky evening news update for Friday February 3rd 2024. 1. Police say they are investigating if missing Victorian woman Samantha Murphy’s body has potentially been moved as they reveal it is unlikely that the 51 year old will be found alive. Ms Murphy left her Ballarat East home for a jog on the morning of February 4 and hasn’t been seen since, the detectives investigating the case saying they are keeping an open mind about her disappearance but that the most likely scenario is that it involved one or more parties, ruling out a medical episode and with nothing to indicate that she left the area on her own accord, leaving them to believe she has possibly been killed and that her body has since been relocated.. The lead detective wouldn’t say how many suspects they are currently following up but clarified that her Husband Mick was not one of them at this stage. 2. A currently serving police officer has been taken into custody after presenting himself to investigators looking into the disappearance of former channel 10 reporter Jessie Baird and his Qantas flight attendant partner Luke Davies. The 28 year old handed himself in at the Bondi police station shortly after 10:30 this morning after calls from police saying they were looking for a third person who may have information to help them unravel what has happened to the pair, neighbours reporting loud arguments in Baird’s apartment Monday night before blood stained items belonging to both Baird and Davies were found in skip at Cronulla. That discovery led police to Mr Baird’s blood stained apartment in Paddington 30 km away. Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty said the man, who will be charged with two counts of murder, is the ex partner of Jessie Baird but that no motive has been established at this point, but that they have found a projectile that had been discharged that matched a police firearm and a white van, that is believed to have been used to transport the bodies of the two men after being hired on Monday night, has also been located although the bodies are yet to be found. 3. Deputy opposition leader Sussan Ley has called for the Prime Minister to hand over his ticket to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, saying he’s not a real Swiftie and should give it up for a true super fan. Speaking to Seven’s Sunrise program Ley says what the PM does on his nights off is of course up to him, and if he wants to see Taylor Swift that’s cool but listening to those who couldn't get tickets ,she sent a message to Anthony Albanese to hand them over to a real Swiftie. Mr Albanese says he’s looking forward to the gig and says he's already been given a bunch of friendship bracelets to prepare for the night. 4. For the first time, the winners of the London Marathon, whether they are able bodied or not, will get equal prize money. The wheelchair category in London was already one of the highest paid purses for a marathon in the world but from this year, there will be an increase of US $54,000 to the overall prize pool with the wheelchair winners taking home $55,000, second $30,000 and third $22,000. the London marathon will be held on Sunday April 21 with three Aussies in the wheelchair category, including previous winner and defending champion Madison de Rozario The Quicky is the easiest and most enjoyable way to get across the news every day. What The Heck Even Is Price Gouging? Supermarket CEO Goes Viral
Our major supermarkets have faced some controversy lately; accused of price gouging customers, stifling competitors and ripping off suppliers. An investigation by Four Corners earlier this week showed a CEO walking out of a sit-down interview, followed by a subsequent announcement that same CEO would be retiring. But what is price gouging? And why is the announcement of a CEO retiring so controversial? In this episode of The Quicky we investigate what our supermarkets are doing and whether we, as the consumers, can be hopeful for improvements in pricing transparency and affordability when we get to the checkouts. Trump's BIG, HUGE Court Loss & The Potential End Of His NY Business
Donald Trump has been directed by a NY judge to pay $354.9 million in fines imposed due to the fraudulent manner in which he has conducted his business, over-inflating the value of properties to score better deals on loans and insurance and to pay less taxes. That money is what he essentially owes to those institutions he has defrauded, but will he stump up the cash or continue the fight? The question is, can he afford to? And what of the race back to the White House? Does another civil finding against Trump make him less shiny to his supporters, or more relatable as he's seen to be fighting a corrupt system out to get him? Today we find out how Trump is handling his BIG HUGE, MASSIVE loss and whether it makes any difference to the leadership in the U.S.A Want to try our new exercise app? Can Your Boss Still Call You After Right To Disconnect Laws Pass?
Over 90% of Australians have a smart phone. And more often than not, they seem to be stuck to our hot little hands, meaning we can be contacted by anyone at anytime, including by our bosses outside of working hours. But that's all about to change. A new law has passed that gives employees a "right to disconnect" from work, ignoring emails and calls outside of work hours. In this episode of The Quicky, we look at what it actually looks like and what implications it might have on us when we decide to hit ignore on the bosses calls or leave them on read. "It's Really Infuriating": Teacher Confessional After First Weeks Back
We often think about how the kids and parents are coping in those first few days and weeks of school, but what about those who've been back in the classroom way before the students? Teachers have been busy getting the classroom ready for the new influx of faces, learning the names of 30 to 100 children to make sure they don't feel alone in their education experience, sometimes taking money out of their own pockets to ensure those in schools with less funding, have the ability to at least write on something or with something. But despite the difficulties (yes, we include parental interactions in that category) teachers describe the joy they feel when the school year begins again. Want to try our new exercise app? Forget "Quiet Luxury", 2024 Is All About "Loud Budgeting"

No longer are we putting ourselves into debt for things we can't afford. Takeout, coffees, food delivery services and streaming are just some of the things Aussies are willing to go without to pinch a few pennies. Boy Swallows Universe Reminds Us Of A Time Before Tech
When Trent Dalton's best selling book Boy Swallows Universe hit the small screen this year, it brought with it all the Brisbane 1980's vibes with it. As Eli Bell navigates his way through his troubling but beautiful life, he is surrounded by markers of a time gone by, with fat back TV's, cassette players, cars with window winders and landline telephones with a dial. For those who grew up during this time it's a reminder of a simpler life where technology didn't rule our universe, but do we really want to go back to that? And even if we wanted to, could we? The Quicky team investigates what it would take to turn back tech time. Want to try our new exercise app? Click here to start a seven day free trial of MOVE by Mamamia.
