S1 Ep 118Omega-3s and Brain Health | Drs Dean and Ayesha Sherzai
In Episode #117, I sat down with Drs Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, leading neurologists who specialise in cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s. Recently, Dean and Ayesha performed a thorough review of the literature to find out how important omega-3s are for brain function and whether or not we should be taking them. They ended up splitting this review into two parts: one covering pregnancy, infancy, childhood, and adolescence and the other covering adulthood. In this episode, we break down their findings with the goal of helping you understand what omega-3s are, where we get them from and whether we should consider supplementation. It was a pleasure to have them back on the show. I love everything that they are about and I’m sure you’re going to find this a very informative episode. S1 Ep 115When We Eat Matters | Emily Manoogian, PhD
In Episode #114, I sat down with Emily Manoogian, PhD, from the Panda Lab at Salk Institute for Biological Studies, to learn about how we can improve our health by nurturing our circadian rhythms. Emily and her team are considered world leaders in the field of science known as ‘chronobiology’, and they have published several studies (with more currently underway) investigating how the timing of our meals affects our health. As well as circadian rhythms and circadian disruption, we also discussed time-restricted feeding (TRF), the difference between TRF and fasting, and what Emily’s research has identified about TRF so far. There’s plenty of practical information and recommendations in this fascinating episode. (As I note at the beginning of this episode, although TRF is not an extreme protocol, if you suffer from an eating disorder and find the subject of meal timing to be in any way triggering, then this may not be the best episode for you. And that is totally fine! Simply pick the show back up in the next episode and come back to this one in the future if appropriate for you.) Simon *NOTE: Unfortunately, the audio quality of this episode is not as high as I would ordinarily like. While I much prefer having these conversations in person (and hope to get back to that format soon), with COVID-19 I’ve needed to record remotely in order to continue having such informative guests on the show. • A more recent episode with Emily: Episode #204 • More on this topic from Episode #221 with Satchin Panda Want to support the show? S1 Ep 114Upgrade Your Health by Changing the Foods You Eat | Matthew Nagra, ND
In Episode #113, I sat down with Dr Matthew Nagra to talk about how he uses evidence-based nutrition science to help his patients upgrade their health. If you are looking for an episode that consolidates several topics previously raised on the show, along with findings from new research, then I think you will really enjoy this episode. We talked about the latest EPIC-Oxford study on bone health, the health advantages of people who adopt plant-predominant or exclusive diets, naturopathy as a form of health care, and important nutrients and supplements for people reducing their consumption of animal-based foods. Dr Nagra shared how he helps his patients make sustainable changes, his answers to the common questions he gets from patients (including questions about protein, soy, lectins, and cooking oils), and his personal food philosophy. S1 Ep 113Carnism and Communication | Melanie Joy, PhD
In Episode #112, I sat down with Harvard-educated psychologist and bestselling author Melanie Joy to discuss how we form our beliefs about food and how people on plant-based diets can have healthier, more productive conversations with meat eaters. This is an episode that I believe will be highly enlightening regardless of which diet you follow. In this episode, Melanie shared her personal journey to studying psychology at Harvard and writing her award-winning book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism. We discussed the carnism ideology, carnistic defence systems, and why our food choices matter. Listen to hear some fascinating insights into effective advocacy for a plant-based lifestyle and better communication with people holding a different opinion to you. While my episodes usually focus on the science of nutrition, I found this exchange fascinating, and I believe that it provides so much insight into communication in general, whether or not it’s related to food choices. S1 Ep 110Cell-Based Meat and the Future of Food | Bruce Friedrich
In Episode #109, I sat down with Bruce Friedrich, lawyer and co-founder of the Good Food Institute, to talk about two solutions to current problems with our food system: plant-based meat and cultivated or ‘cell-based’ meat. Bruce and I discussed what exactly is wrong with the current food system and how it affects human health, planetary health, and animal welfare (including specifics on climate change, COVID-19, antibiotic resistance, production inefficiencies, and food security). We then talked about plant-based and cultivated meats, particularly bio-mimicking meat made using cells collected via biopsy. Bruce shared his knowledge on where these industries are currently, the projections for the future, the barriers to entry, when we can expect to see cell-based meat on the shelf, and how these types of products are likely to be perceived by customers. (I apologise in advance for the slightly tinny audio from Bruce’s end in this episode – the recording software is a bit hit and miss compared to when you are in the same room! S1 Ep 109What Diet Is Best for Health? | David Katz, MD
In Episode #108, I sat down with Dr David Katz, MD, who in my opinion is one of the clearest voices in an area of science littered with confusion, hidden agendas, and biases. This is a great episode that reinforces many of the key principles that I have been sharing with you via social media and on this show for the past two years. It also emphasises the three pillars that I base my personal food decisions on: human health, planetary health, and animal welfare. In this episode, we talked about why an infectious disease pandemic may help us to take chronic disease more seriously, what the number one risk factor for chronic disease in developed countries is, and why debating the little stuff is keeping us from making an impact on the big stuff. We also discussed the characteristics of an optimal diet and whether there is one ‘single best diet’ that we should all be following. And David’s shares his thoughts on whether we should eat fish and whether adding animal products to an optimally planned vegan diet would improve one’s health. S1 Ep 106Regenerative Agriculture | Ryland Engelhart and Finian Makepeace
In Episode #105, I sat down with Ryland Engelhart and Finian Makepeace from Kiss the Ground to continue the theme of how our food system and food choices are affecting the health of our planet. In this episode, we covered regenerative agriculture and how it differs from sustainable, organic, and biodynamic farming practices, as well as the problem with industrial agriculture. We also discussed tilling, cover crops, carbon sequestration, and holistic grazing, including White Oak Pastures (for a more detailed dive into the science on this, see episodes #104 and #111 with environmental researcher Nicholas Carter). S1 Ep 105Our Diet Is Destroying the Planet | Environmental Researcher Nicholas Carter
In Episode #104, I sat down with environmental researcher Nicholas Carter to chat about how our current food system is affecting the environment. We discussed the changes needed to meet climate goals and create a system that results in better food security, less water pollution, less land use, less freshwater use, and greater production efficiency. We covered some big questions in this episode, including what climate change is, what the implications of a warming planet are, and whether climate change is more than an energy issue. We also discussed greenhouse gases and their connection to human activity and agriculture, before going on to talk about the environmental impact of animal- versus plant-based foods as well as food transportation. Nicholas also shares some top tips that we can implement individually to lower our environmental footprint. There’s so much more in this episode, making it one of my favourite episodes yet. S1 Ep 103A Healthy Gut Is Fibre Fuelled | Dr Will Bulsiewicz
In Episode #102, Dr Will Bulsiewicz joined me for the fifth time to talk about his new book, Fiber Fueled, and to tackle a few areas of gut health that we haven’t yet explored on this show. If you are looking for more evidence-based knowledge bombs about gut health, then this is an episode you will want to digest. In this episode, Dr B and I discussed whether it makes sense to ‘eat like our ancestors’. We also covered dysbiosis (when the bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract become unbalanced) and whether it could cause, or at least contribute, to autoimmune diseases, weight gain, and chronic diseases. Of course, we also talked about Dr B’s new book, the importance of fibre, microbiome research, and much more. S1 Ep 102Understanding Zoonotic Diseases | National Geographic Science Writer David Quammen
In Episode #101, I was fortunate enough to sit down with well-known National Geographic writer and author David Quammen to talk about zoonotic diseases and mitigating the risk of future pandemics. This is a fascinating area of science that gives yet another reason to be mindful of our lifestyles. Given that predictions suggest there are over 1.5 million animal viruses yet to be discovered, understanding what increases the likelihood of one of those viruses passing from an animal to a human is incredibly important for human health. David and I discussed the origin of zoonotic diseases, what a ‘spillover’ means, what reservoir hosts are, and specific zoonotic diseases such as HIV and Ebola. David also shares his insights into transmissibility and fatality rates, the likely origin of COVID-19, and how human activity affects the risk of these emerging novel diseases. Enjoy, friends. S1 Ep 101Reflections during COVID-19 | Drew Harrisberg
EIn Episode #100, I sat down with Drew Harrisberg to talk about the first 100 episodes of this show and some of the most important takeaways for me so far, particularly in regard to human and planetary health. We also delve into the current circumstances that we all find ourselves in and reflect on our personal experiences and learnings thus far. While this free-flowing chat between two mates is exactly as I imagined and the perfect summary for the first 100 episodes, the unplanned nature of it does mean that we jump around a little bit. But for those willing to look past that, I think there is some thought-provoking material inside for everyone. Thank you for all your support. S1 Ep 100Overcoming Adversity and Seeking New Challenges | Rich Roll
In Episode 99 I sit down for a second time with ultra athlete Rich Roll to talk about the humble beginnings of his show, which is now one of the world's leading podcasts in the education and wellness space, and what it feels like to have now released over 500 episodes into the wild. We cover a bunch of other topics too, including overcoming adversity and seeking out new challenges, that I think you will also find interesting. Of course anyone who know's Rich will be familiar with how beautifully he's able to articulate his experiences, thoughts and learnings for us all to benefit from. A craft of his that no doubt comes with decades of introspection and self work, and years behind the microphone conversing with a diverse range of interesting guests. Please also note, as mentioned in the introduction this was recorded before LA went into social isolation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So if you see videos of us online from this episode, they were shot well and truly before there was any advice to practice social distancing. Hope you enjoy friends. Be sure to connect with Rich on Instagram or Twitter, thank him for taking the time to have this conversation and if you haven't already, grab a copy of his book 'Finding Ultra' here. S1 Ep 99Can We Slow and Reverse Ageing? | Dr David Sinclair
In Episode #98, I sat down with Harvard professor Dr David Sinclair, PhD, to discuss the information theory of ageing, and in particular how we can slow down and perhaps even reverse the ageing process. In this conversation, we discussed chronological versus biological age, the role of genetics versus epigenetics in the ageing process, how long he thinks we may be able to live for, how our nutrition and other lifestyle factors affect the ageing process, and more. This is a deep dive into the underlying mechanisms that take place on a cellular level as we age. It’s an exchange that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I hope you do too. Of course, in two hours it’s hard to cover the topic of ageing in its entirety, so I look forward to having David back on the podcast to dive even deeper in the future. You can also grab a copy of his book Lifespan online or in most book stores – it’s a fascinating read. Connect with David on Instagram or Twitter. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? S1 Ep 97Game Changer | Nimai Delgado
In Episode #96, I sat down for a catch up with plant-based pro bodybuilder Nimai Delgado. Having recently been in Los Angeles for almost 3 weeks, it was great to catch up with Nimai and hear how things have been with him since our previous episodes. This one’s quite a casual conversation with no real direction, as I already covered his story back in Episode #3. But if you know of Nimai, you’ll be well aware of what a breath of fresh air his humble and gracious personality is. I certainly love catching up with him and am grateful to have him as a good friend. Some of the things we cover in this relatively shorter episode are bits and pieces about The Game Changers, his current training programme, paying the rent with cardio, his business interests, his daily rituals, training Lewis Hamilton, and more. S1 Ep 98Plant-Based Nutrition during Pregnancy, Infancy, and Breastfeeding | Whitney English, RD
In Episode #95, I sat down with Whitney English, registered dietician, to talk about plant-based nutrition during pregnancy, infancy, and breastfeeding (lactation). Whitney, along with her partner Alex (also a registered dietician), are the founders of Plant-Based Juniors – an online resource that brings evidence-based nutrition information specific to these stages of life to the public. In this episode, we covered the benefits of a plant-based diet during pregnancy and infancy; specific nutrients of focus during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and infancy, including recommendations for supplementation; and breast milk versus formula and different formula options. We also discussed introducing solids, picky eaters, and much more. This is an episode I have wanted to do for a couple of years now. It’s quite a comprehensive conversation, so if this is a topic that’s relevant to you, I highly recommend grabbing a pen and paper and listening in a quiet, comfortable space free from distractions. S1 Ep 95A Plant-Based Ketogenic Diet for Diabetes | Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH
In Episode #94, I sat down with Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, for a second episode – this time for a deep dive into the plant-based ketogenic diet and whether or not it’s a good option for people with insulin resistance and diabetes. We talked about why a low-carb diet is popular for diabetics and frequently recommended by doctors, and Cyrus and Robby shared the philosophy of the high-carb Mastering Diabetes program. We also discussed a new 2019 study looking at a traditional ketogenic diet, whether a ketogenic diet can truly reverse diabetes, who may be suited to a plant-based ketogenic diet, and much more. Whether you have diabetes or not, I think you will still find this episode interesting. Plus, with the rates of diabetes skyrocketing (particularly prediabetes and type 2 diabetes) it’s highly likely that most people listening will know someone who is affected by this disease. Stick around until the end for my summary where I bring together the take-home messages. For more insights and reflections, visit The Proof website for the full show notes. Enjoy, friends. S1 Ep 94Why Your Blood Cholesterol Levels Are Important | Sean Ryan
In Episode #93, I sat down again with Sean Ryan to check in and see how he’s doing with his transition to a plant-based lifestyle. We picked up from where we left things in Episode #89 and reviewed his pretransition baseline blood work, and then spent the majority of the episode talking through cholesterol and how we can use diet to affect our cholesterol levels. At the end, we also touched on meal prep, handling social conversations, and a few other questions that Sean had since our last episode together. Whether you are thinking about transitioning to a plant-based diet, are currently transitioning, or already eat a plant-based diet, I think you will take something away from both today’s episode and Episode #89. S1 Ep 93Lungs of Our Planet Need Our Help | Jimmy Halfcut
In Episode #92, I sat down with Australian environmentalist James Stanton Cooke, or ‘Jimmy Halfcut’, to talk about the role that our rainforests play in keeping our climate cool. I met James a few months ago at a charity night in Bondi, and with the fires currently burning across Australia, I couldn’t help but think this was the perfect time to sit down and talk about mother nature. Listen to hear Jimmy and I discuss the importance of rainforest preservation, as well as Australian wildfires, controlled burning, hazard reduction, circulation burning, regenerative agriculture, and Australia’s energy situation with regard to coal and renewables. You’ll also hear Jimmy share some practical things you can do to lower your environmental footprint. For more insights and reflections, visit The Proof website for the full show notes. S1 Ep 92Healthy Weight Loss Is Not a Diet | Simon Hill, Msc, Bsc
In Episode #91, it’s you and me again for another solo episode of The Proof podcast. As usual, this episode – focused on weight loss – is about clearing confusion, breaking down the science, and giving you practical tips to hopefully allow you to lead a healthier, more sustainable, and happier lifestyle. I focus in on social media and body image, what dietary patterns are best for weight loss, and other aspects to consider when it comes to trying to lose weight. This episode is not about obsessing over belly rolls or cellulite. My aim is to bring you the science without the fads, quick fixes, or anything else that gets you reaching for your wallet – I simply want you to understand what factors affect your body weight so you can be empowered to take control of your health. That said, I do understand that our food system is set up in a way that makes it hard to lose weight; the cheapest and most convenient foods are usually the unhealthiest. So by no means do I want you to feel any less of yourself if you are simply doing your best in your individual circumstances. S1 Ep 91The Food We Eat is Killing Us | Dr Kim Williams
In Episode #90, I sat down with former president of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Kim Williams, to discuss the role that our diet plays in preventing, suspending, and reversing cardiovascular disease. While many of us see heart attacks and strokes as ‘inevitable’ and a ‘normal’ part of getting old, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Many populations with different diets are significantly less likely to develop cardiovascular disease. Observational science and controlled trials both point to a predominantly or exclusively plant-based diet as the ultimate way to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. If you want to know what foods are causing your arteries to ‘clog’ and how to avoid this, then I highly recommend listening to this exchange. Kim is an absolute wealth of knowledge, and unlike so much of what you see on social media these days, his stance is based on hard evidence from all different levels of scientific investigation. S1 Ep 90Adopting a New Lifestyle to Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease | Sean Ryan
In Episode #89, I sat down with a long-time friend of mine, Sean Ryan. Sean and I recently caught up for dinner, and he expressed interest in changing his lifestyle. One particular reason is that cardiovascular disease runs in his family, and he ticks quite a few of the boxes when it comes to modifiable risk factors for having a heart attack or stroke. In fact, Sean has been contemplating and embarking on lifestyle changes for the better part of a year with mixed results. He cannot help but feel confused by all of the mixed messages across the internet and among health professionals in his community. As a result, he’s been left feeling disempowered and unsure what to do. As Sean and I got talking during our dinner, I realised how valid his questions were and suggested that we share our conversations and his journey to better health as a series on this show to hopefully inspire others. He generously agreed, and here we are – the first of a handful of episodes with Sean. It’s a slightly different format that I hope you will enjoy. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? S1 Ep 89Victims of Speciesism | Seb Alex
In Episode #88, I sat down with Seb Alex to discuss the importance of animal welfare and what life looks like through the lens of an animal activist. I understand that the topic of animal welfare is often a little uncomfortable (I totally get it), and perhaps you hold the stereotypical view of animal activists as being angry, weird, and violent. I know I used to. But Seb is anything but that, and I urge all of you, plant-based eaters or not, to listen to this conversation with an open mind. Even if you’re not interested in a plant-based lifestyle, it’s interesting to listen to what people from different walks of life have to say. In this episode, Seb and I discuss normalising plant-based diets and what Seb thinks about the Impossible Burger and large chains like Hungry Jacks who have added plant-based burgers onto their menu. We also tackle some big questions like what counts as a sentient being, whether there are different levels of sentience, what speciesism is, and whether ‘humane slaughter’ exists. S1 Ep 88Eating More Plants, Leading by Example, and Building a Community with Purpose | Marie Fe and Jake Snow
In Episode #87, I sat down with Marie Fe and Jake Snow, who are arguably two of the most inspiring individuals that I’ve come across in using social media to build a powerful community with purpose. It was a pleasure to sit down with them, share their story, talk about various aspects of their lives, and celebrate the positives of using social media. Listen to hear about their backstories, how they met, how they funded their first travels, and the inspiration behind their transition to a plant-based diet. We also chatted about the evolution of their social media content and why they feel the desire to share information about important global issues. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? Chris plays for the Collingwood Football Club, the largest club in Australia, and in the past few years has been able to take his game to the next level. In this episode, we cover the ups and downs of Chris’s career, when and why he changed his diet, and the impact this had on his life and football. S1 Ep 86Australia’s Fastest Ever Female 800m Runner | Plant-Based Athlete Catriona Bisset
In Episode #85, I sat down with plant-based Australian track athlete Catriona Bisset, who currently holds the national record for the 800m event. If you haven’t heard of Catriona, chances are you will very soon – seemingly coming out of nowhere, she is now destined to represent Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In this episode, we talked about Catriona’s journey from a young track athlete and the pressures she faced, through her struggles with anxiety, depression, and disordered eating, to how and why she adopted a plant-based diet. She shares the ins and outs of her diet and how she has worked on it to improve her well-being and performance. S1 Ep 85What Does a Healthy Plant-Based Diet Look Like? | Simon Hill, Msc, Bsc
In Episode #84, it’s you and me again for another solo episode of The Proof podcast. As usual, this episode is about clearing up confusion, breaking down the science, and giving you practical tips to hopefully allow you to lead a healthier, more sustainable, and happier lifestyle. In this episode, I cover recent headlines about the dangers of ‘fake’ or ‘mock’ meats, Formula 1 driver Romaine Grosjean’s comments about a vegan diet and endurance performance, a recent article in the Global Environmental Change journal that was covered in a somewhat misleading fashion by HuffPost, and some tips for building a healthy plant-based diet. Of course, I could talk about building a plant-based diet for hours and hours, so in this episode I focused on some of the top principles and myths about a plant-based diet that I most wanted to get across so you can set yourself up for success. S1 Ep 84Hidden Agendas in Science and the Media | Drew Harrisberg
In Episode #83, a very good friend of mine, Drew Harrisberg, returned to the show to talk about hidden agendas in science and the media, with specific reference to a few somewhat dangerous trends we have noticed. In this unscripted exchange, Drew and I covered topics including the manipulation of science to produce favourable outcomes and the confusing and oversimplified messages we get from people of influence on social media. We started by chatting about how Drew’s transition to a plant-based diet has played out since Episode 62. We then went on to discuss some specific studies and claims, such as Dr Mark Hyman’s confusing promotion of an extremely conflicted study on the ‘reversal of diabetes’ and Sarah Wilson’s claims about methane and the impact of animal agriculture on climate change. We also talked about the ‘If It Fits Your Macros’ and ‘calorie deficit’ ideologies and why these are oversimplifications – it is possible to look and feel good at the same time without needing to choose one or the other. I hope you found this to be an interesting episode; I certainly did. For more insights and reflections, visit The Proof website for the full show notes. Enjoy, friends. Simon Note: As I allude to throughout this conversation, just because I may hold a differing opinion to someone that doesn’t mean I dislike them or want conflict. I am open to sitting down with any of the people mentioned, or others, to further discuss these ideas and flesh them out with the best available science we have. I hope to have proponents of the ketogenic, If It Fits Your Macros, or the carnivore diet on the show in the future. Want to support the show? In this episode, I explain why I took a short break from the podcast and the new direction for the show. You’ll also hear about my time in Bali and Sydney’s newest plant-based restaurant, Eden Bondi. And I discuss the recent media headlines about vegans needing to be careful about choline deficiency and about vegetarians and stroke risk. S1 Ep 82Your Gut Health Questions | Dr Will Bulsiewicz – Part 2
In Episode #81, I sat down with Dr Will Bulsiewicz for a second session of answering your gut health questions. All of the topics were suggestions from The Proof community – so firstly, thank you for contributing to this conversation by sending through such important questions. If you’re a regular listener and have tuned into previous episodes with Dr B (#17, #71, and #80), you’ll already know what a wealth of knowledge he is; Dr B is a board-certified gastroenterologist, having completed over 16 years of medical training to become an expert in all things gut health. So he is perfectly positioned to help us navigate tricky gut health questions and clear up some of the confusion. In this episode, we cover a lot of really interesting gut health topics, such as the effect of the keto diet on the gut; dairy, probiotics, prebiotics (lactose), and gut health; intermittent fasting; prolonged juice or water fasting; breastfeeding and infant gut health, including the role of human oligosaccharides; antibiotics and gut health; whether we should avoid gluten; the benefits of soaking oats; and so much more. What’s great about this episode, and all episodes with Dr B, is that throughout the conversation he refers to the clinical science to provide evidence for his recommendations. Enjoy, friends. S1 Ep 81Your Gut Health Questions | Dr Will Bulsiewicz – Part 1
In Episode #80, I sat down with Dr Will Bulsiewicz, or Dr B, to go through some of the most common gut health questions out there! If you have tuned into The Proof podcast before, you’ll have no doubt come across my previous conversations with Dr B – he is incredibly knowledgeable and has a unique ability to break complicated science down and turn it into simple practical tips. If you haven’t listened to the previous episodes with Dr B, I strongly encourage you to check them out – Episode 17 (how to build a healthy gut) and Episode 70 (gut health and quitting a plant-based lifestyle). With so many bloggers and unqualified people providing advice on gut health these days, it’s refreshing to hear from a gastroenterologist who genuinely understands the science inside out. In this episode, we cover heavy bloating and gut health, how to identify if your gut needs repair, how our mind can affect digestion, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ‘leaky gut’. In Episode #75, I sat down with Dr Caldwell Esselsytn Jr, or Essy, to chat about his journey in medicine and the specific findings from his clinical trials on preventing cardiovascular disease. S1 Ep 75Truly Reversing Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes | Robby and Cyrus from Mastering Diabetes
In Episode #74, I sat down with Robby and Cyrus from Mastering Diabetes to chat about diabetes (type 1, 1a, pre-, and type 2) and the role that nutrition plays in insulin resistance. We go through the body of scientific literature and explain what causes insulin resistance and how to actually reverse it. We talked about the difference between low-carb, ketogenic-type diets and high-carb, low-fat diets for insulin resistance, and what truly reversing insulin resistance actually means – specifically the difference between reversing insulin resistance and managing blood glucose control. Strap yourselves in – this is a long one (2.5 hours). But I guarantee that by the end of it you will have learned so much about diabetes and will finally understand the mechanism that causes insulin resistance, how to reverse it, and how to improve health outcomes. This understanding is important not only for people with diabetes but also for anyone looking to better their health, particularly anyone who is overweight (millions of people have undiagnosed prediabetes). Insulin resistance is a spectrum, and eating to promote optimal glucose tolerance means you will be able to enjoy some of the most healthful food groups in the world associated with longevity. We delve into the reasons why he is grateful to acne, how his acne improved with dietary changes, bullying, body building, eating a pound of tofu a day for a month, and so much more. I’ve got to say, I have a real soft spot for Brian, and there’s a fair chance that after this episode you will too. S1 Ep 73Being Unapologetically You | Sjana Elise Earp
In Episode #72, I sat down with plant-based yogi Sjana Earp to chat about yoga, healing, transformation, and living with purpose. This is a different exchange to the more scientific episodes on this show, yet equally as informative and thought provoking in its own unique way. Sjana shares her struggles with mental health – bullying, anxiety, and depression – and her strategies for overcoming negative feelings. We also discussed what yoga means to her, her relationship with food, and why she transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle. We cover a lot of topics in this conversation, including social media, what purpose is, breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues, and sustainability and looking after our planet. S1 Ep 72How You Can Prevent Chronic Disease | Dr Dean Ornish
In Episode #71, I sat down with one of the pioneers of lifestyle medicine, Dr Dean Ornish. Dr Ornish is best known for the randomised controlled trial ‘the Lifestyle Heart Trial’, where he was able to demonstrate that cardiovascular disease could not only be halted in its tracks but, in many cases, actually be reversed. In this exchange, we talked about why we see such a high rate of chronic disease in Western populations and the steps that you can take to genuinely take control of your health. We discussed the Lifestyle Heart Trial and what we can learn from the intervention and results, as well as what’s causing cardiovascular disease in the first place and why some people refute the findings that associate saturated fat and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with cardiovascular disease. Dr Ornish also shares his thoughts on the Atkins, keto, and paleo diets and what various approaches fail to address when it comes to healthy eating habits. You’ll also find out what he uses clinically and believes is the healthiest human diet in the world! Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? S1 Ep 71Gut Health and Quitting a Plant-Based Diet | Dr Will Bulsiewicz
In Episode #70, I sat down with gastroenterologist Dr Will Bulsiewicz to talk about those who’ve quit their plant-based lifestyles and the gut-health issues they have described. This episode was inspired by a number of plant-based influencers who bailed on plant-based eating recently and reintroduced animal products back into their diet. I listened to all of their stories and noted many similar patterns, including that none of them were qualified in medicine, nutrition, or dietetics, and that many people in the comments were second-guessing their own diets. I don’t think everyone needs a degree to talk about a subject; however, we need to be careful how certain information is shared and who we, as individuals, go to for qualified information. So with that in mind, I thought it was really important for me to get a world-leading gastroenterologist on the show to make sense of what’s going on here. The case study we discuss in this episode is 100% hypothetical. It’s the typical journey spoken about by these influencers, but it isn’t about any single person in particular, and I think you will see by the way the conversation goes that we both have absolute empathy for anyone struggling with their diet. To kick things off, Dr B and I recap Episode #17, where we had an in-depth conversation on the importance of the microbiome for our overall health. If you haven’t listened to that episode, I highly recommend you jump back and listen to it – it’s the most listened-to episode of this show to date. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? S1 Ep 70Finding the Flow State | Red Bull Athlete Patrick Seabase
In Episode #69, I sat down with Red Bull athlete Patrick Seabase, who cycles over mountain passes involving gruelling climbs and steep descents on a bike that has one gear and no brakes, often reaching speeds close to 100 km/hr (62 mph). Yes – mind blowing! This is the first time Patrick has told his story on a podcast, so I was very honoured to have him on the show and am incredibly grateful to have this platform to share our conversation with you. In this episode, we covered Patrick’s early years, being kicked out of home, and how he discovered his passion for cycling. He shares the type of bike he rides, what’s unique about it, and the concentration required to ride this bike and finding the ‘flow state’. We also talked about how his diet has changed over the years and why he was inspired to remove animal products from his plate. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? S1 Ep 69Managing IBS | Dr Sarina Pasricha
In Episode #68, I sat down with gastroenterologist Dr Sarina Pasricha to break down irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), an incredibly common condition that approximately 10–20% of adults suffer from. Specifically, we cover the different types of IBS, how they present clinically, and how they’re diagnosed. Dr Pasricha also discusses the difference between healing and managing symptoms and shares her evidence-based approach for reducing IBS symptoms and the results she’s seen clinically. Of course, we talk about the low FODMAP diet, how it’s used incorrectly, and why it’s not Dr Pasricha’s first line of treatment for patients with IBS. Enjoy, friends. Simon Want to support the show? In Episode #66, I sat down with Adam Sud, a tremendously brave young man who turned his life around from the lowest of lows by discovering his ‘true why’ and mastering the practice of self-love. From disordered eating and being overweight to rehabilitation, recovery, and self-love, he’s been on a remarkable journey. Adam’s story is tremendously powerful, and one that I feel incredibly privileged to be able to share with you. Today, Adam is helping save people’s lives across the world through his work with Whole Foods Market, his public speaking, his role as a diabetes and food addiction coach, and his upcoming clinical trial, the INFINITE Study – exploring the effects of a nutrient-dense diet and nutrition education in early addiction recovery.
