Episode 181: The Leadership Lie That Is Keeping You Stuck
On August 15, 1973, Richard Nixon gave a televised address to the American people from the White House. During that speech, Nixon said, “I had no knowledge of the Watergate break-in and I had no involvement in it.” His supporters believed him, but the investigation would eventually reveal that he had lied. The Watergate tapes were released to the American public on August 5, 1974. Just 3 days later, Richard Nixon became the only President to resign and Watergate became known as the largest scandal in the history of American politics. When we tell a lie, there are usually consequences. When we lie to ourselves, there are almost always significant consequences. Episode 180: The Email That You Should Never Send
Has this ever happened to you? You receive an email from an upset parent, an upset teacher or an upset board member. The email makes you angry. You immediately write a response to that upsetting email. You hit send. And almost immediately, you wish you hadn’t. You wish that you could put the “toothpaste back in the tube”, but you can’t. You wish that you had a time machine, but you don’t. This has happened to me far too many times during my career. Unfortunately, it usually made things worse, damaged trust that I had worked hard to build and just escalated the level of drama. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to talk about The Email That You Should Never Send. Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 179: How To Be The Leader Your School Needs You To Be Right Now
Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, I was a basketball coach. I coached Boy’s Varsity for nine years and coached 5th/6th Grade Girls for seven years. I wasn’t the same coach the entire game: If my team was making a lot of mistakes, they needed a teacher. If my team was down by a lot of points, they needed an encourager. If my team was not playing up to their potential, they needed a motivator. My team needed me to be a different kind of coach at different times during the season or even during the same game. Your school doesn’t just need a leader, your school needs the right kind of leader… right now. The leader your school needed in August might not be the leader your school needs today. The leader you were last year might not be the leader your school needs this year. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to give you 4 ways to be The Leader Your School Needs You To Be Right Now. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 178: 5 Strategies That Will Boost Your Enrollment Before August
Where I live, we are lucky enough to have all four seasons. Last week, I saw the first robin of the year and some of the daffodils are starting to pop up. Spring is a wonderful season because it means winter is over and everything will be lush and green in just a few weeks. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily a wonderful season for private school leaders. Why? Two words. Enrollment Season. I think that there are three reasons why so many private school leaders get so stressed out about their enrollment numbers at this time of year: Enrollment affects everything: staffing, budget, facility needs, curriculum purchasing, etc. Enrollment is a public number and the board always knows that number. No matter how hard you work at it, the outcome is mostly out of your control. The good news is that we still have time to take action. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to give you 5 Strategies That Will Boost Your Enrollment Before August. Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. Episode 177: Extraordinary Empathy: The Hug That Changed Everything
On October 17, 1995, Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. The twins were 12 weeks premature and each baby weighed just two pounds. Kyrie was gaining weight in the days following their birth, but Brielle was having difficulty breathing, and her oxygen levels were dropping critically low. Nurse Gayle Kasparian, who was on duty that night, tried everything she knew to calm the baby girl. But nothing worked. As the minutes passed by and Brielle’s crying became uncontrollable, her condition worsened, and she started to turn blue. What Nurse Gayle Kasparian did next was against hospital rules. What she did next also changed the course of Neo-Natal care around the world. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to talk about Extraordinary Empathy: The Hug That Changed Everything. Episode 176: Here's Your Survival Mode Escape Plan
On March 11, 2010 I was lying on the bathroom floor at my house. I had been lying there for an hour, because I couldn’t stand up. I couldn't keep anything down for two days and I was severely dehydrated and dizzy. I said to my wife, “I need you to take me to the emergency room.” After a lot of tests, I was told that I had four ulcers in the lining of my stomach and esophagus. Then the ER doctor asked me, "Do you have a stressful job?" My job as a Private School Leader had finally put me in the hospital. I have experienced: My daughter saying, “Dad, when do we get to see you instead of the back of your laptop?” My wife saying, “I feel like you are married to the school instead of me.” Feeling guilty and lonely Feeling stress and anxiety Feeling overwhelmed and exhausted I know how it feels to be in survival mode. I thought that I knew how to make it better: Just outwork the problem. Just come in earlier, stay later, work weeknights and weekends. Just put your head down and work harder. But that didn't get me out of survival mode. It just made things worse. Then my self-talk was: “What's wrong with me? I must be weak.” I don’t want YOU to stay stuck in survival mode any longer. I know that you don’t want to be there and you definitely don’t want to stay there. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to give you Your Survival Mode Escape Plan. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 175: The 2 Problems That 90% Of School Leaders Face (And How To Fix Them)
90% can be an awesome number or a terrible number. Episode 174: You Will Lose Good Teachers And Good Families If You Keep Doing These 2 Things
There are very few guarantees in life. However, there are probabilities. Think about your car. If you drive the speed limit, obey the rules of the road, have good tires and good brakes, you are less likely to get into an accident. However, if you speed, run red lights, drive on bald tires and your brakes are shot, you are probably going to get into an accident. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in our private schools. Sometimes, we work really hard all year on retention and recruitment and still don’t hit our enrollment goals. We go above and beyond to have a safe campus and someone still slips and falls on the ice. Sometimes, we go all in on a new initiative and it fails miserably. There are no guarantees in our private schools. But there are probabilities. This is likely to happen if we stop doing that. This is very likely to happen if we keep doing that. Episode 173: 4 Leadership Lessons From The 1988 Jamaican Bobsled Team
When I ask you to picture the island of Jamaica, what comes to mind? Probably white, sandy beaches, palm trees and crystal clear water. What you probably don’t think about is snow, ice and needing to dress in multiple layers just to keep warm. But, in the late 1980s, the Jamaican Olympic Committee decided to send a team of athletes to compete at the Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. The sport? Bobsledding. Predictably, people laughed. Even people from their own country mocked them. Many media members treated the team like a novelty act instead of legitimate competitors. But the team trained. They ACTUALLY qualified and they showed up in Calgary and lined up on the same ice as the most established programs in the world. They didn’t win a medal, but they did something else. They earned the respect of their competitors and they proved to the world that they were not a circus sideshow, but they were actually Olympians. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss 4 Leadership Lessons From The 1988 Jamaican Bobsled Team. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 172: The 4 Things That Teachers Wish Their Principals Knew
I hate going to the dentist. The thing that I hate the most is when the dental hygienist gives me a shot of Novocain and says, “You are going to feel a little pinch.” Yeah, right! It feels like a needle just went through my gum and directly into my brain. I need to be straight with you. During this episode, you are going to feel a “pinch.” I am going to be talking about some things that your teachers wish you knew. Maybe it’s just me, but I have always felt that anonymous feedback from my teachers was the most difficult feedback for me to hear. Can’t they see how hard I am working to support them? Don’t they trust me? How could they possibly feel that way after everything that I have done for them? This episode is about the gap between what you intend as a leader and what your teachers experience day to day. And here’s the hard truth: You cannot close a gap if you keep pretending that it doesn’t exist. So, take a deep breath, pause your defense mechanisms and remember that good leaders can hear hard things. Episode 171: Your Biggest Strength Could Also Be Your Biggest Weakness
We all know the name Arnold Schwarzenegger. Seven-time Mr. Olympia. Hollywood action star. The Terminator. At his peak, Arnold could bench press well over 500 pounds and had one of the most powerful physiques the world had ever seen. Being the most famous body builder in the world led to notoriety and eventually led to Arnold being the highest-grossing movie star in Hollywood. But, he also had some weaknesses. Flexibility? Not exactly his thing. Fine motor precision? Can you imagine Arnold trying to thread a needle? And early in his acting career, his size actually held him back from developing as an actor. In other words, the very thing that made Arnold Schwarzenegger exceptional also created limitations. The same thing can be true about private school leaders. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss how Your Biggest Strength Could Also Be Your Biggest Weakness. Episode 170: How To Handle The Concerning Shift From "Helicopter Parenting" To "Snow Plow Parenting"
I don’t like snowplows. When I see a snow plow, that means that the roads are snow covered. I don’t like driving on snowy roads, especially because of the hilly terrain where I live. There’s also another reason that I don’t like snow plows. For the 21 years that I was a Head of School, getting our school’s parking lot plowed always seemed to be a recurring source of stress. There is something that I like even less: “snowplow parenting.” Snow plow parents constantly try to clear the path for their child and remove every obstacle. I can’t believe that I am saying this, but I actually prefer “the good old days” when we mostly dealt with “helicopter parents.” In my experience, helicopter parents try to micro-manage problems, but snow plow parents try to completely eliminate problems. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss How To Handle The Concerning Shift From "Helicopter Parenting" To "Snow Plow Parenting" I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Episode 169: 3 Ways To Lift Your “Leadership Lid”
I listen to a lot of Sports Talk Radio. At this time of year, the NFL playoffs give everyone a lot to talk about. But, after the Super Bowl, the hosts of the local and national shows have to try pretty hard to manufacture topics. Inevitably, one of the hosts will start talking about the GOAT in every sport. Of course, GOAT stands for the Greatest Of All Time. In my opinion, the GOATs in the four major sports are Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Mario Lemieux and Babe Ruth. That said, I think that Shohei Ohtani, of the LA Dodgers, has a chance to become the greatest baseball player of all time. So, why am I talking about GOATs? Because I think that the greatest leadership book of all time is The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell. The tagline of this amazing book is “follow them and people will follow you.” Law #1 is “The Law of The Lid.” On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss 3 Ways To Lift Your “Leadership Lid.” Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. Episode 168: 4 Leadership Lessons From Captain Sully And "The Miracle On The Hudson"
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia Airport, bound for Charlotte. Just 94 seconds after takeoff, the plane struck a flock of geese. Both engines failed, at just under 3,000 feet, over one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger had just seconds to make a decision. Try to turn back to LaGuardia? Try to make it to Teterboro airport in New Jersey? Or do something no one had ever successfully done before, land a commercial jet in the Hudson River? A little over four minutes after the bird strike and total engine failure, Captain Sully had successfully landed Flight 1549 on the Hudson River. All 155 people on board survived. A catastrophic disaster had been avoided and this incident quickly became known as “The Miracle on the Hudson.” As private school leaders, we are not trying to land full jets on icy rivers. That said, we often have to make high pressure decisions, where the stakes are high and the margin for error feels really small. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss 4 Leadership Lessons From Captain Sully And "The Miracle On The Hudson." If you watch TV between Christmas day and New Year’s Day, you will see a lot of commercials for gym memberships. In fact, if you watch the New Year’s Eve coverage from Times Square, you will immediately notice that Planet Fitness is the exclusive sponsor of the big ball drop. Of course, gym memberships are being advertised because the most common New Year’s resolution is to get in better shape. Unfortunately, most studies show that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions never make it to February 1. I strongly believe that your 2026 can be dramatically different if you make just one change. Episode 165: The #1 Frustration Of Private School Leaders Right Now (And What To Do About It)
We all have pet peeves. For some reason, most of mine tend to happen at the grocery store. It bugs me when the person in front of me has 35 items in the “10 items or fewer” lane or when someone is walking really slowly or taking up the entire aisle with their cart. My latest pet peeve has to do with the ubiquitous pop up ads that appear anytime I am trying to read something online. Even worse, the X to close the ad seems to be getting much smaller than it used to be. Pet peeves. Frustrations. Annoyances. We all have them in our personal lives and we definitely have them as we lead our schools. That said, there is a big difference between pet peeves and getting super frustrated about something. Over the last few months, about 60% of my coaching clients have been really frustrated with the same specific issue at their schools. The good news is that, if you are dealing with this frustration as well, I can give you strategies to make it better. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast we are going to discuss The #1 Frustration Of Private School Leaders Right Now (And What To Do About It). Episode 164: Do These 3 Things When A Parent Hijacks Your Emotions
On June 21, 1985, a domestic flight in Norway (Braathens SAFE Flight 139) was hijacked mid-flight. The aircraft was a Boeing 737, carrying 121 people (116 passengers and 5 crew.) The hijacker had an air gun that looked real, and claimed that he had planted explosives on board. His demands: speak to the Prime Minister of Norway and the Minister of Justice of Norway. Everyone remained calm and the incident ended with zero injuries and zero fatalities. According to the report that followed the investigation, “the peaceful resolution came about because of calm, competent handling by the crew and authorities, safe negotiation, and reliance on procedures, not panic.” Obviously, what we deal with in private school leadership is nowhere near that level of danger. However, sometimes a hijacking occurs when a red-faced parent walks into your office or you receive an email with capital letters and exclamation points. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast I am going to try to persuade you to Do These 3 Things When A Parent Hijacks Your Emotions. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 163: The 3 Biggest Indicators Of A Healthy Culture And How To Get Them At Your School
Back in the summer of 2021, one of my daughters was driving a Chevy CRUZE with over 110,000 miles on the odometer. She needed to trade it in and get a more updated used car, with less miles on it. We found a car that she liked and got a car wash on the way to the used car lot. We vacuumed the inside and even paid extra to get the shiny stuff sprayed on the tires. It looked great! Unfortunately, on our drive to the used car lot, the check engine lights started coming on, one by one. Our dream of getting good value for a trade literally went up in the smoke coming from the engine. I had to use my best negotiating skills just to get the salesman to take the car off our hands. My daughter’s car looked great on the outside, but the check engine lights were indicators that all was not well on the inside. The word indicator means: “a small, measurable behavior that reveals the health of the larger system.” What are the “indicators” of your school’s culture? What do those indicators say about the health of your school’s culture? On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss The 3 Biggest Indicators Of A Healthy Culture And How To Get Them At Your School. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 162: When The Best Thing About Your School Is Also The Worst Thing About Your School
A little bit of fire, under control, is a good thing. I love grilling in my back yard and a hot dog always tastes better straight from the grill. When my daughters still lived at home, we would really enjoy making S’mores over our fire pit. Once a year, we would go to a Christmas village to look at the lights and we would always warm up with some hot chocolate by the bonfire. Unfortunately, fire isn’t always under control. In just the past few years, the wildfires in Maui and Pacific Palisades, California caused utter devastation, with over 125 dead and more than $30 billion in damages. Many of our schools have a warm, close-knit, loving community, where everyone knows everyone. Sometimes we even go to the same church. Our kids' friends go to the school. Teachers who have children in the school are typically friends with the parents of their children’s friends. A warm, close-knit, loving school community, where everyone knows everyone is awesome. Until it’s not. On today's episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss what to do When The Best Thing About Your School Is Also The Worst Thing About Your School. Episode 161: How To Turn Fragile Kids Into Resilient Kids
Do you have any fragile kids at your school? Do some of your students give up easily when faced with a challenging problem or concept? Are your students sometimes too worried about “looking smart?” Do any of your students get extremely upset when they make a mistake on an assignment or get a question wrong on a test? Do any of your students get really anxious about the grades that they get on tests and report cards? This is a very common problem in private schools. Some of the children at our schools have been told all of their lives “You are so smart!” by their parents. Many of our students cruise along with their natural intelligence until they come up against a concept that they’ve never seen before and WHAM, they shut down, they cry, they literally slide the piece of paper back across the desk to the teacher and say, “I can’t do this.” What you are actually seeing is a lack of resilience. Do you want to know how to fix this problem at your school? I watched this problem almost disappear at my most recent school. We have been able to sustain this change for nine years and counting. We also spent zero dollars on this change. If you are curious about how you can make this transformation take place for your school, today’s episode is for you. Best of all, I am going to give you FREE access to everything that we used to accomplish this change: Google slide shows, handouts, videos, diagrams, pictures, EVERYTHING! On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to teach you How To Turn Fragile Kids Into Resilient Kids. I know that the title of today’s episode is a little bizarre, but just trust me. I promise, by the end of this episode, you’re going to see how the heroes from The Hunger Games and Star Wars can help your school save tens of thousands of dollars every year. I want you to imagine that every gas station in your town, except one, suddenly started charging $28 a gallon instead of $4. Would you drive across town to buy the cheaper gas? Yes! What if every pizza joint in town, except one, started selling large pizzas for $140 instead of $20? Are you going to take your business to the one pizza shop charging $20 for a pizza? Of course you are! So when we know something costs seven times more, it’s a no-brainer to focus on the cheaper option, right? Unfortunately, in most of our private schools, we often ignore something of great value and spend 7X the money and resources on something else. Sounds nuts, right? Today, we’re going to fix that! On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to teach you how Luke Skywalker And Katniss Everdeen Can Help You Solve Your Most Expensive Problem I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. Episode 158: Handle Problem Parents By Being More "Teflon Skillet" And Less "Saturated Sponge"
I want you to use your imagination. Imagine that you are a stick figure. Now imagine that this stick figure has a sponge for a heart. You go through your day and your sponge keeps absorbing other people’s emotions. The grumpy board member on the phone. The teacher who is upset that his curriculum hasn’t arrived yet. The parent that is in your office tears. The new student who is sitting alone at lunch. By 3:00PM, your sponge is getting pretty full. Unfortunately, you have a 3:00PM meeting with “that parent” and you are feeling overwhelmed before the meeting even starts. The meeting goes as expected, with raised voices, red faces and pointed fingers. Your sponge is now completely saturated and you walk to the parking lot, get in your car and drive home to your family. What do the following four things have in common? A meatloaf recipe The 2nd grade math curriculum The NFL rulebook A grading rubric They are all examples of frameworks. Frameworks give us structure. They give us a clear guide on how to do something, but leave a little room for interpretation. As private school leaders we use dozens of frameworks every day, like the bell schedule or the student handbook or your carpool dismissal procedure. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to give you 1 Framework That Will Make You A More Effective AND Happier Leader Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. Episode 156: How to Handle a Veteran Teacher Who’s Resisting Change
Has this ever happened to you? You are standing in front of your faculty about to introduce a new initiative, policy or school-wide roll out of some sort. Before you even open your mouth, you notice one of your veteran teachers seated at the back of the room. After you say your first three sentences, you notice that this veteran teacher has their arms crossed, they look upset and they are whispering to a colleague while maintaining eye contact with you. Here we go… Just writing those words made me feel a little weird in my stomach. I have had this happen to me many times and each time it felt discouraging, frustrating and annoying. You already know that you have a battle on your hands because you have a veteran teacher who is going to be super resistant to this change. So why does this happen, and what can we do about it? Well, on today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss How to Handle a Veteran Teacher Who’s Resisting Change. Episode 155: Your 4 Biggest Blind Spots: How To See Them And Avoid Them
About 5 years ago, one of my daughters bought a 2018 Hyundai Sonata. Before buying this car, she did a ton of research because she was looking for one very specific feature. It wasn’t the stereo system or heated seats. It had nothing to do with the engine or if the car had power windows. She wanted a car that had blind spot detection. I had never ridden in a car with this feature, but there are sensors on her car that light up when another car is in one of her blind spots. In fact, the sensor starts to beep if she tries to change lanes while someone is in her blind spot. As private school leaders, we also have blind spots. Unfortunately, we don’t have a sensor that lights up or beeps. Sometimes we think that our leadership is just fine. Everything is fine! But we don’t actually see the problem. These leadership blind spots can negatively impact teacher morale, financial decisions, trust, school culture, parent relationships, our credibility and much more. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss Your 4 Biggest Blind Spots: How To See Them And Avoid Them. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 154: Are You Running Your School Or Leading Your School?
It was Field Day 2005 and I was just trying to be helpful. I arrived at the field early and asked Mrs. Ankney if there was anything that I could do. She asked me to use the manual line painter and paint the finish line for the 50 yard dash and the 100 yard dash. She had already set up the cones, I just needed to walk in a straight line, from cone to cone, and squeeze the handle on the line painter. So, I painted the 50 yard dash finish line. I walked slowly and looked ahead of me and behind me and kept checking the line as I walked. When I got to the other cone, I expected to turn around and see a line that looked like something that you would see inside of an Olympic stadium. What I saw was the most crooked, wavy line that I had ever seen and I also saw Mrs. Ankney doubled over with laughter. “You’re doing it wrong!”, she said. “Apparently.”, I said. Before I tried again at the 100 yard cones, she told me the secret to painting a straight line. Mrs. Ankney said, “While you are walking, don’t look down. Pick a tree off in the distance and stare at it. Don’t take your eyes off of that tree and just walk and squeeze the handle.” The result? I painted one of the straightest lines I’ve ever seen… Sometimes we run our schools like the line I painted for the 50 yard dash. Eyes down, head on a swivel, putting out fires, giving attention to what is latest and loudest and 6 inches in front of our face. I get it. I led that way for years But, what our school actually needs is someone who is also looking at the horizon. The leader needs to see things farther away and sooner than everyone else. Unfortunately, the tyranny of the urgent makes this feel impossible. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to answer the following question: Are You Running Your School Or Leading Your School? Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 153: When A Parent Says, "If you don't _______________, then I'm going to pull my kid out of the school."
Several years ago, I was meeting with the mom of a 6th Grade boy. She looked me in the eye and said, "If you don't put my son into Pre-Algebra 6, then I'm going to pull both of my kids out of the school." Immediately, I felt my blood pressure rise, my pulse quicken and I started to get a weird feeling in my stomach. If I told her “no,” I ran the risk of her pulling her two children out of the school. If I told her “yes,” I had to go and face my Math teachers who did all of the 5th Grade year-end assessments to determine which students should be in Math 6 and which students should be in Pre-Algebra 6. I am proud of how I handled this particular situation. That said, I am embarrassed and ashamed about how I handled some similar situations earlier in my career. Episode 152: Private School Leadership Does NOT Have To Be Death By 10,000 Paper Cuts
Just a heads up that the next few sentences are going to be gross. We have all heard the phrase, “death by 1,000 cuts.” This phrase actually comes from an ancient Chinese form of execution called Lingchi, which literally translates to "slow slicing." It was a brutal and symbolic form of torture meant to inflict maximum suffering over time. Of course, in modern language, it describes the fact that thousands of tiny stressors, annoyances, or disruptions that slowly wear you down and lead to burnout or worse. As a private school leader, you deal with these all the time, they might look like: inbox overload, frequent interruptions, repetitive questions, staff drama, unexpected staff absences, facility problems, parent complaints, micromanagement from the board and a lack of boundaries. Each of these on their own? Minor inconveniences. But together, day after day, they can feel exhausting, frustrating and discouraging. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to teach you 8 Strategies To Overcome Death By 10,000 Paper Cuts. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 151: 5 Strategies To Overcome Feelings Of Loneliness And Isolation
Has this ever happened to you? You are at school or at an event and you are surrounded by parents, teachers and students. You are surrounded by hundreds of people, but you feel totally isolated and profoundly alone. I remember this happening to me one year at my school’s holiday concert. I went up to the microphone and cheerfully welcomed everyone and told them how much time their children had spent preparing for the concert. I got down from the stage and sat down near the back of the auditorium. There were probably over 700 people there. But, I just remember feeling really, really lonely. Being a private school leader can be a very lonely and very isolating job. But, it doesn’t have to stay that way. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss 5 Strategies To Overcome Feelings Of Loneliness And Isolation. Episode 150: "So, are you saying that you have no idea where my child is right now?"
12 years ago, Leo’s mom asked me a question. To this day, her words still send a chill down my spine. "So, are you saying that you have no idea where my child is right now?" And I had to say, “That’s correct.” It was dismissal time on the first day of school, in late August of 2013. Leo got on a bus that we thought was the correct bus. It was a small bus and Leo was the only passenger. Five minutes later another small bus pulled up to the school. That second bus was actually Leo’s bus. The story had a happy ending, but not before frantic phone calls, 60 minutes of a busy signal at the bus garage, a call to the local police department and, of course, my phone call to Leo’s mom to tell her what was happening. Our students have a lot going on after school. At dismissal, we have buses, carpool and walkers. And that doesn’t account for the kids playing in the soccer game, rehearsing for the Spring Musical or painting a picture in Art Club. I don’t want you to ever be in the situation that I was in 12 years ago. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to ask you some questions and then teach you some strategies, so that you never have to say “yes” to the following question: "So, are you saying that you have no idea where my child is right now?" Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 149: Are Your Boundaries Written In Pencil Or Sharpie?
On May 21, 2018, 19 year old Cedella Roman, a French citizen, was visiting her mother in White Rock, British Columbia. Cedella decided to go for a run on the beach and she headed south. After running for about 30 minutes, Cedella saw two men walking towards her and they motioned for her to stop. To her surprise, they were US Border & Customs Agents. She had accidentally jogged over the border from Canada into the United States. Cedella was detained because she had no ID and, as a French citizen, no passport. Cedella’s mother brought the necessary documents to Tacoma, Washington. Her mother was very upset that there were no signs on the beach. She said, “If there had been a sign, Cedella would have turned around.” Sometimes, the same thing happens to us when it comes to our boundaries between school and home. Our boundaries are often not clearly marked and are difficult to see, for us and our teachers and parents. This often leads to checking emails in bed and at the dinner table, staying at school way later than we had planned and spending weeknights and weekends on our laptop. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I want to ask you the following question: Are Your Boundaries Written In Pencil Or Sharpie? Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. You are making a difference in the lives of the students, teachers and parents at your school. I know that what you do is difficult, exhausting and lonely. Episode 148: Navigating "The Age Of Outrage" With The Parents At Your School
Is it just me or does it seem like more people are getting more angry, more quickly? I am seeing people go from 0-100 in 2.2 seconds over things that didn’t used to be that big of a deal, like: An overcooked steak at a restaurant Someone’s opinion on the Internet The way that the cashier is bagging someone’s groceries An umpire calling strike three at a Little League baseball game. Not a big deal, right? Yet you and I know that all of the above cause some people to turn into ranting and raving maniacs. Why? Because we are living in the “Age Of Outrage.” According to Karthik Ramanna, author of The Age Of Outrage: How To Lead In A Polarized World, “Essentially, the "Age of Outrage" is a reflection of a more reactive and polarized society, where public anger is easily triggered and readily expressed, impacting various aspects of social and political life.” As you well know, this outrage has made its way into our schools when some parents tell us how to do our jobs (at full volume) or send us emails with capital letters and exclamation points. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss Navigating "The Age Of Outrage" With The Parents At Your School. Episode 146: Leadership Lessons From A Professional Juggler
About 3 years ago, the 5th grade boys at my school were obsessed with juggling. I don’t know how it started, but about half of them were juggling all the time, especially at recess. I remember thinking: “That looks really difficult.” Recently, I have been thinking about how a professional juggler is like a private school leader. Sometimes we say, “I’m juggling a lot right now” or we refer to how we are “juggling our priorities.” I've even heard people say, "I have a lot of balls in the air right now." As a private school leader, you're juggling enrollment, academics, upset parents, student discipline, dress code, teacher morale, event planning, board reports and that’s before lunch! Episode 145: Trustworthy Leaders Say These 4 Things
A 2016 Harvard Business Review study found that 58% of employees reported they would trust a stranger more than their own boss. Yikes! Just let that sink in for a minute. More than half of American employees say that they trust a complete stranger more than they trust their own boss. This isn’t a “trust gap”, this is more like a “trust Grand Canyon!” We all want to build trust with our teachers and staff. We certainly want them to trust us way more than a complete stranger. The big question is: “how?” On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast we are going to discuss the 4 Things Trustworthy Leaders Say. Episode 143: The 6 Keys To Significantly Improving The Culture At Your School (Part 1)
I want you to use your imagination. You and two colleagues from your school are going to an educational conference in another city. You decide to go a day early and visit two private schools in that area. In the morning, you visit a big school with a beautiful campus, strong academics, 20 sports teams and cutting-edge technology in every classroom. It seems like an amazing school, but within ten minutes of walking the halls, you feel like something is off. The front office staff barely looked up when you arrived. Teachers kept their doors closed. Even the students seemed unusually subdued and there just didn’t seem to be much joy on the campus. During the afternoon, you visit a much smaller school. It has older buildings, fewer resources, and no fancy lobby. But the moment you walk in, a third grader runs past you yelling, “We’re having music in the hallway today!” A teacher smiles and waves from her doorway. A student opens the door for you and asks if you need help finding someone. You hear laughter from the staff lounge. At the end of the day, the Head of School is in the carpool line, saying goodbye to kids, addressing them by name and giving them high-fives. Two private schools in the same city. Why was there such a huge difference between the two schools? Culture. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss The 6 Keys To Significantly Improving The Culture At Your School. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 142: 5 Ways To Improve Your Teacher In-Service Days
At my local Walmart, the same thing happens every year, during the week after the 4th of July. They start putting out all of the “Back To School” items in their seasonal section. Just a week before, this section was filled with beach towels, flip-flops and sunscreen and now it is full of notebooks, folders and pencil cases. I don’t know about you, but I usually spend the rest of July actively avoiding the "Back To School” section because it feels like summer just started! Depending on where you live, there is a wide range of dates on which teachers return to campus for their Teacher In-Service Days. I have heard dates as early as July 14 and as late as August 20. Regardless of when your teachers come back, I want to help you make their first few days as impactful as possible. Episode 141: Use "The Focus Funnel” To Increase Your Productivity
I want you to use your imagination. Pretend you are at school. For the entire morning, you are wearing glasses that make everything very blurry. Around noon, someone hands you glasses with a perfect prescription and you can see everything SUPER clearly. I am guessing that the second half of your day will go much better than the first half. Private school leaders have a big problem when it comes to seeing clearly at school. The problem is called the “tyranny of the urgent.” When you are playing whack-a-mole, with one hand and operating a fire extinguisher with the other hand, it is pretty difficult to see anything clearly. But, what if you had a magic pair of “productivity glasses?” On today’s episode of the Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to teach you how to Use The “Focus Funnel” To Increase Your Productivity. Episode 140: Leadership Lessons From Your Windshield And Your Rearview Mirror
When I was a little kid, I was obsessed with the Indy 500. Why? Well, my Grandma lived one hour south of Indianapolis and my great Uncle Harry actually helped build the engine for one of the race cars back in the 1930’s. The winner of the very first Indy 500 was Ray Harroun, way back in 1911. At that time, race cars had a driver that faced forward and a mechanic that faced backwards. The mechanic would tinker with the engine during the race and yell to the driver about what the race cars behind him were doing. On the morning of the race, Ray Harroun, got a little mirror, screwed it to his dash and told his mechanic to stay on pit row. Having a much lighter car than the other drivers, Harroun won the race easily and the first rearview mirror was born. Why on earth am I talking about rearview mirrors and 114 year old race cars? Just stay with me and I promise it will all make sense! On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to learn some Leadership Lessons From Your Windshield And Your Rearview Mirror. Episode 139 Prioritizing Problems: Elephants, Wolves and Termites
My daughter is a birdkeeper at the Jacksonville Zoo. She gets to work with some pretty amazing birds and do some really cool things. One day, a few months ago, I got a text from her along with three pictures of her and three other keepers wrestling/relocating an alligator! I’m pretty sure that’s NOT her area… I want you to imagine that you are visiting a zoo with your family: Look to the left and you see a slow moving, giant elephant. Look to the right and you see a wolf that looks like it is ready to bite your face off. There is one very important thing that you don’t see. What you don’t see are all of the termites that are doing invisible damage to various structures throughout the Zoo The problems in our private schools actually have a lot in common with these three animals. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss Prioritizing Problems: Elephants, Wolves and Termites. Episode 137: The Secret Struggle: Mental Health And Private School Leadership
In July of 2021, the summer Olympics were taking place in Tokyo, one year after being cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. You may remember that Simone Biles withdrew from the gymnastics competition citing mental health issues, especially anxiety. Her openness about her mental health struggles brought a lot of media attention and other athletes and entertainers felt more comfortable talking about their mental health issues. From Michael Phelps to Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande, more and more celebrities were speaking up and trying to reduce the stigma attached to discussing mental health challenges. Unfortunately, many private school leaders are engaged in a secret struggle. On the outside, many of us look like confident, resilient, strong, courageous superheroes who can handle anything. While on the inside many of us battle anxiety, depression, panic attacks or other issues. I can only speak for myself. When I was struggling, I earned my Academy Award every day. I couldn’t let my people see any chinks in my armor. I had to be Superman on the outside and there was NO WAY that I was going to talk about this with anyone other than my wife. This might be an uncomfortable topic, but on today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss The Secret Struggle: Mental Health And Private School Leadership. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference!
