Should You Publish Your Podcast To YouTube? - The Podcast Report

Is my audience on YouTube? Are podcast listeners listening to content on YouTube? A lot of people ask if you should put your podcast on YouTube. There are many people who will do a deep dive telling you reasons why you shouldn't put your podcast on YouTube. The fact of the matter is you should put your podcast anywhere your audience might be. Tip of the Week: Does your podcast have a because you will? A because you will is the reason your avatar listens to your podcast. If you don't have a because you will, you need one. Every single episode should have one. Write it down or make a spreadsheet and keep track. If you understand the because you will of your episode, the podcast will be a lot better. Should You Put Your Podcast on YouTube? [02:04] Should you put your podcast on YouTube? [02:29] It's easy to put your podcast on YouTube. You can also do a video podcast. [02:45] The debate is in the world of the audio podcast. How could you put an audio podcast on YouTube? [02:55] You could upload a file with a static graphic. Libsyn makes it possible to publish on YouTube with your default image. There are also tools and services that make it possible for you to do this. [03:10] The issue is should you? Or why shouldn't you? Some people debate that if it's just a picture people won't stay as long. [03:32] Think through it intelligently and logically. [04:03] I had a friend who had over a thousand views of his podcast on YouTube. He was doing better than other videos in his niche. [04:41] I have published past episodes of The Podcast Report on YouTube. [05:04] People argue that it's the wrong platform. I actually think it's the nerds and the listeners to decide which platform is the right platform. [05:17] If you look at the stats, more people are listening to music on YouTube than anywhere else. [05:32] 46% of the country or 129 million people went to YouTube for music in the previous week according to the 2018 Infinite Dial Study. [06:00] If we have more people going to YouTube for audio, let's make sure our stuff is on YouTube. [06:04] It's not only YouTube, it's smart speakers like Google Home. [06:25] If you have a YouTube Red account, you can play audio from YouTube to your smart speaker. [06:57] YouTube Red has premium ad free content that you pay for. [07:23] Live from Daryl's House with Daryl Hall. The Smokey Robinson episode is incredible. I would buy the tracks from this show. Many people have made playlists on YouTube of this show. I can play them from my Google Home through YouTube Red. [09:01] I'm going to start putting all of my stuff up on YouTube. I'm working on a template. We're going to have some fun with this. [09:28] I'm also going to put my clients up. I wouldn't recommend a static image. You can have some fun with animations. [09:38] I think I will explore this topic in future podcast episodes. I would also love your thoughts and comments on this. [09:58] If you're doing your show on YouTube, leave a comment and let me and my other listeners know. Is There Room for Another Podcast? with Joel Comm - The Podcast Report

Joel Comm is here today to chat with me about if there is room for another podcast. He has a new podcast that is less than nine months old, yet he is having amazing success. This is because Joel is delivering content that his audience is hungry for. We also take a look at the specifics of Joel's podcast. We look at how he is getting revenue and where it is coming from. This podcast is about crypto, and he is connecting a very specific audience to a very specific offer. The power of this industry is making solid connections the way that Joel is doing. Tip of the Week: Are you considering sponsorships for your podcast? If so, think about a sponsor that will still sound good in one year, two years, or later down the line. You want your sponsorship to sound like a strategic implementation of what you are trying to do. Add sponsors that tell a more complete story of where your podcast is going. Is There Room for Another Podcast? [02:55] Joel and I have known each other for about a decade. He has rebooted and gone through different products over that time, but he has always remained successful. [03:05] The podcast we talk about today is not his first podcast, but it is an extremely successful podcast. [03:25] Joel wrote one of the first twitter books called Twitter Power. [03:59] The Bad Crypto Podcast started in July 2017. It was started on a whim as a case of opportunity meets action. [04:48] Bad Crypto's average Spotify downloads are over 1000 a day. They have had half a million downloads in February. Since July, 3 million across the board. [06:23] Before Joel and his co-host Travis Wright started the Bad Crypto Podcast a lot of the other crypto podcasts out there were kind of dry and over people's heads. They decided to take an approach that was more fun and focused on learning together. [08:05] Joel tries not to listen to other crypto podcasts, because he wants to make sure that they keep doing something different and unique without having outside influences. [09:30] The success of Joel's podcast is a combination of many things from timing to their unique content. Joel was slow to start working with crypto. [10:30] Travis and Joel were talking about having a crypto podcast, and then they decided to make it a reality. [11:07] They started their podcast with no idea that the big crypto boom was coming. [12:25] They started using Spotify in September and their numbers just kind of tracked along with the numbers on Libsyn. They are in 190 countries worldwide. [14:02] Joel shares his podcast monetization strategy. They are super transparent. One show is an ICO spotlight. ICO stands for initial coin offering. Companies get to come on the show and tell listeners about their ICO. [15:27] They will offer companies sponsored slots on an ICO show. They charge the company for that slot which is usually a 15 to 18 minute interview. [15:48] They usually do three of those in an episode. Their numbers are on the high side, and they're not going to take sponsors that don't fit. [17:07] They also have some crypto related sponsors. [17:53] They have also taken the Bad Crypto Show on the road and actually created a live experience. They have a funny, engaging, and interactive experience that adds a whole new dimension to these crypto conferences. [19:05] The Bad Crypto Live Shows were an unintended consequence. People could try to copy them, but it would be obvious. [19:10] They have a really unique niche within this vertical. [19:55] How podcasters are now becoming fascinating entities. [21:24] How doing Bad Crypto Live is so much more fun than doing a professional keynote speech. It's like doing improv. [22:28] They now have a team to help manage the show. All of the aspects of podcasting can be really draining. They like to focus on what they do best which is creating content and speaking. [23:09] Is there room for new podcasts? Of course.Tell a story that is unique and be true to yourself. [23:28] Why would you want to copy what somebody else is doing. Do something unique. Thoughts On The Infinite Dial 2018 Report - The Podcast Report

Every year, Edison does their infinite dial study. This is a study that focuses on the entire theme of audio. This is not only a study of podcasting, it's a study of all Internet audio and how it all fits together. Every year, when you look at the study you get to see the comparison between podcasts and internet radio or podcasts and Pandora or other audio mediums. There are a couple things that I appreciate about the infinite dial which just cannot be stressed enough. First off, it's a real sample of real people. They give you the details of their sample before they present the data of each study. I love the infinite dial because it puts all of the audio studies together. This year is also the 20th anniversary. Today, I go through the slides and share my thoughts with you. Tip of the Week: One of the number one questions that comes up in podcast consulting is what is the type of schedule I should follow for my podcast. You don't have the constraints of a regular show. No matter what you do, take your audience with you. This is also the answer to your question. Ask your audience what they want and need. Keep in mind people like predictability, but they also like when you serve them. Thoughts On The Infinite Dial 2018 Report: [06:09] I love the methodology and how they take science seriously. [06:23] 83% of America owns a smartphone. It's no longer a question of will people consume information on their smartphones, it's a question of how will they do it and what will they consume. [06:52] Tablet seems to be going down. I don't think tablets are gone, but smart speakers are also in the mix. [07:23] Smart speaker use is only going up and is only going to get bigger and bigger. [07:38] Amazon is still doing better, but they won't always win everything. Create a smart speaker strategy. [08:05] People aren't depending on radio anymore, they are using internet connected devices. Put your content on the Internet. [08:31] On slide 15, they talk about Facebook being down a little bit. I wouldn't decry the loss of Facebook yet. [09:02] Realize it's not having a specific strategy for this speaker or that social media platform. It's really about making sure your content is everywhere. [09:53] On slide 29, Pandora has massive audio brand awareness. Pandora announced recently that they are coming up with a podcast strategy. If the number one audio brand in the country is coming up with a podcast strategy, you want to be part of it. [11:16] Weekly YouTube usage is at 46%. YouTube usage continues to grow because it's safe, easy, and a product we know what to do with. [11:52] I'm seeing podcast consumption on YouTube even without video. It is great distribution. [11:57] AM FM radio is still big in in-car media. Podcasting is bigger than satellite radio. [12:23] 15% of America looks at in-dash entertainment systems. [12:34] Audio books is also a model of consumption that you may want to think about. Don't put yourself in a situation of podcast versus audiobooks. Instead, make it Podcast and audio books. [13:11] On the podcasting slides, the numbers continue to go up. 1 in 4 people listen to podcasts monthly. 1 out of 5 or 6 Americans listen to podcasts every week. That is tremendous. Number of podcasts listened to In the last week has gone up. [14:03] The most used devices are portable devices and tablets, and the least used device or the numbers that are going down are on computers. [14:11] Podcasts are being consumed at different places. [14:18] Less than 25% listen in their car. At home podcast listening is still the largest number. Half of podcast listeners listen at home, and they have smartphones and smart speakers. [14:53] Slide 59. Only a small percentage of podcasters speed up their audio. Smart speakers are growing faster than smartphones. Have a plan and a strategy for smart speakers. [16:01] Percentage of Americans who use social media has tapered off. It's still a predominant and important player. [16:22] Streaming audio and Pandora is huge. Apple music isn't doing that well. Amazon music is interesting with their Echo. Pandora is going to be the next interesting spot. It is the next play. [16:32] Podcasting is continuing its steady growth. At some point, it will taper. [17:01] I want you to watch the video and look at the slides and consume these for yourself. [17:57] It's important to know that this industry is doing better and has some fantastic chances. Should I Attend This Podcasting Event? - The Podcast Report

I just got back from Social Media Marketing 2018. After looking at my very full calendar, I have to ask myself the question of are attending these events right for me. I have some ideas and takeaways about whether to attend a podcasting event or not. A lot of people go to events for the wrong reasons. A lot of people go to events for the right reasons but get distracted along the way. I have some strategies and tactics I'm going to share with you today. Tip of the Week: You don't have to and you might not always want to have the word podcast in your name. There are really only two types of people in this world those who know what a podcast is and those who don't. If your podcast gets picked up by online radio or apps, you don't want to discourage listeners who don't know what a podcast actually is. Should I Go To This Podcasting Event: [03:27] I've just returned from Social Media Marketing World 2018 in San Diego. It was beautiful and inspiring. I had a tremendous time in San Diego. [03:50] How many more events should I be attending? Are events the best strategy for everyone? [04:13] Today I'm going to share general thoughts on attending podcast events. [04:20] I met the guys from each camp networks. It was fantastic to meet three guys who have made such an impact. [04:43] Is a podcasting event the best way to spend your money? [05:03] In some cases the answer is yes. Podcasting events can be a great way to meet people and make connections. [05:15] Other times I've gotten distracted and wasn't able to get the work done. [05:38] Reasons that you shouldn't attend a podcast event include coming for the free stuff or the show specials. If the only reason you're going to the event is for the training, grab the virtual ticket instead. [06:54] Don't expect to learn something in the session that will change your life. [07:54] Don't come for booth sales that don't work. [08:34] The last reason not to come is that if you are working on something that's actually more important than the event, spend your time working on the thing that is more important. In other words opportunity costs. [09:29] The number one reason to go to one of these events is making the virtual physical. If you want to do business, but you need to meet people this is a great place to make those introductions. [10:15] A great reason to attend a podcast event are strategic connections. Sometimes just showing up has tremendous value. [10:58] Being with peers and getting encouragement is another great reason to attend. [11:34] Ethical lead generation. Sometimes speaking gets you a lead. [12:08] Don't forget about follow-up opportunities with the replay. [12:43] Going to an event gives you time to focus on only the topic of the event such as podcasting. [13:51] Come to the event to make the virtual physical. Come to the event to make strategic connections. Come to the event to get the encouragement you're not getting at home. Come to the event for ethical lead generation. Come to the event for time to focus on the topic. [13:59] Don't come for free stuff or just the training. Don't come for the alcohol. Don't come for the hack. Don't come for the break. Don't come for sleazy booth sales. Don't come for the excuse not to get the job done. [15:14] The impact filter tool for intelligently considering the pros and cons of an event. [15:42] Social media marketing world was worth it for me.But I have to sit down and figure out where certain events fit in my grand scheme of things. [16:22] I've attended events and parties for distraction. Distraction is part of the entrepreneurial world. [16:34] A lot of podcasters are obsessed with reviews and microphones. [17:14] I joined strategic coach this year, and I am getting very clear on doing what I'm supposed to be doing. [17:34] I need to go to events that I can bring clients to. [18:23] I'm going to an event, so I can accomplish something in particular. My podcast is more important than any podcast event. [18:38] Your message is more important than any plane you get on. Your audience deserves your best attention. More Thoughts On Podcast Tracking - And A Few Thoughts On Intimacy - The Podcast Report

What kind of relationship do you want with your audience? This is going to be a shorter episode, but it is a really important one. If we can make podcasting an intimacy game, the game will change forever. The profit will go up, and the impact we're looking for will continue to rise. I know that we are not just about the downloads and ads that we can throw at those downloads. Podcasting is bigger and better than that. This is what we are going to explore on today's show. Tip of the Week: If you want your audience to do something, it might not always be obvious to them. It may be the clearest thing to you. You might know exactly what you want your listeners to do. Your audience doesn't necessarily know. When you are taking your audience on a journey tell them exactly what you want them to do and let them know what the exact process is. More Thoughts On Podcast Tracking - And A Few Thoughts On Intimacy: [02:34] Today, I'm talking about more thoughts on podcast tracking and a few thoughts on intimacy. [02:46] As an industry, if we stop focusing on the downloads in order to get sponsors and started working on more strategic approach we could be doing a lot better. [03:25] In a recent episode of The Feed Rob Walsh chatted with NPR. NPR is hoping that podcast clients will report what is being consumed similar to the way that Apple does now. [04:02] I just signed a new client. They are very high profile in business, consulting, and Internet marketing. The host asked me who in podcasting is tracking their direct marketing? [04:36] I answered no one, and he said that he was going to do it. [04:58] Three reasons that people aren't tracking the things that let them monetize the most. Number one: They are just stuck in the downloads equals success trap. [05:05] Number twohim: They don't think that their podcast has value. Your podcast has value. That's what you're doing it. If you want to serve your audience, you'll figure out the value. [06:07] The third reason is a lot of us don't know how to monetize. [06:22] The Business Podcasting Bible is a book I wrote way back in the day. [06:55] A lot of people talk to me, and I may or may not listen, but when my wife talks I listen. She gets attention that no one else gets, because she's my wife. [07:36] Because of the intimate relationship with my family when I talk to them, I want to react. That is the nature of intimacy. [07:48] We have a lot more intimacy with our podcasts then the guy on the evening news. [08:49] Most of you who have come with me on this journey have done so because you respect me. [09:06] This is Paul with this 10+ years podcasting sharing with you in an intimate relationship. [09:29] I have three people on my panel in the upcoming session that I'm going to. One of the members of the panel actually invests in financial funds because of his podcast. [09:58] One of the other people on the panel has a business that involves family and business together. It's what mom's do, and it is personal. [10:37] The third person is from an ad group that puts ads on podcasts. They are doing ads that are trustworthy from the point of view of the podcaster. [11:21] The latest cameras and microphones aren't what matters in podcasting. The only tech that really matters is intimacy. [13:19] The podcast with the highest value is the one that gets the audience to make an intimate choice. [13:49] Let's show value and be worthy of our intimacy. [14:19] Podcasting makes relationships and connections possible. [14:43] Stop assuming it is about the numbers and connect with your audience. Do you want an audience that is excited? [15:32] Ponder what happens when you have an audience that trusts you. They not only subscribe, but they also have a smile on their face when they consume your content. [16:19] Let's track the deep relationships and think secondarily about the other things. How to Make Your Podcast A Medium Article - The Podcast Report

Benjamin Hardy the #1 writer on Medium is here today. It makes sense to put your written content where people already are. I've always said making people come to your blog in the world of syndication, publication, subscription, and podcasting is a little bit arrogant. I've also talked about repurposing your content. Medium is currently an interesting opportunity. Today, we talk about putting your podcast on Medium. Medium is doing incredible numbers when it comes to search ability, and it's worth taking a look at. Benjamin Hardy's writing focuses on self-improvement, motivation, and entrepreneurship. He is also getting his PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. His research focuses on the difference between want to be entrepreneurs and actual entrepreneurs or dreamers versus doers. Tip of the Week: You know what's better than your audience immediately enjoying your podcast? A podcast you created several years ago being enjoyed by new listeners. Some podcasters don't think about the long-term. Every week, more stuff from the back catalog is being downloaded. When you plan your podcast, make a podcast that will be even more valuable as time goes by. How to Make Your Podcast a Medium Article: [04:48] Benjamin is one of the more approachable and unassuming gurus that I have met in a long time. [05:17] Medium is a repository of articles. It's getting bigger and more strategic. [06:04] Benjamin gets about a million clicks on his medium account every month. Clicks and reads are tracked, so you can optimize your articles for people going through your content. This translates to about 25,000 new email opt-ins a month, and Benjamin now has 320,000 subscribers. [06:55] This also led to Benjamin getting his first book contract and $220,000 for Willpower Doesn't Work. He now has a seven-figure income all from Medium.com. [07:43] Text the word Medium to 5039668066 to get this episode's Medium article and a quick outline based on what Ben teaches. [08:31] Ben has learned how to write viral headlines. He took Jon Morrow's guest blogging course and learned how to write headlines. He creates clickable headlines and structures the article in a way that it looks interesting with subheadings and short paragraphs. If subheadings are interesting and powerful people are likely to read the article. [10:02] Ben's three keys to good writing. You have to be a clear and intentional communicator. The writing has to be very emotional. Hit people in the head as well as the heart. Back everything up with science and experts. [11:55] Knowing the structure, getting people in, and writing it powerfully are what makes good writing to Ben. [13:13] Paul and Ben create a sample article for medium about turning a podcast into a medium article. Find a purpose such as to inspire people to read your article and to subscribe to your email list. [14:37] List the top five reasons why people are missing out if they are not turning their podcast in 2 medium articles. [14:47] These reasons need to be compelling and highlight the opportunity cost and gain. Then back everything up with stats. [15:30] Headlines need to be extremely emotional. [16:27] Hit the why such as what podcasters want. [17:13] Focus on their aspirations and pain. [18:06] If you publish an article and it doesn't do well why wouldn't you republish it again with a different title. Try republishing at the next day or week later. [18:53] The internet is like a river you never see the same water twice. [20:15] Why wouldn't you republish a podcast episode? [22:53] People should republish podcasts with new titles. [23:19] Ben went from 1500 email signups to 5000 a month with the same amount of traffic by switching from a call-to-action that said to go to his website to a call-to-action that sent readers to a landing page. [23:55] Websites are distraction heavy. [24:26] Then Ben switched from an ebook to a checklist, and he went from 5000 email sign-ups to 20,000 email sign-ups a month. [30:39] Sell because you really believe in what you are doing but don't stop getting better at what you do. [30:54] Willpower doesn't work is a self-improvement book. Becoming a foster parent changed Ben's life. The external pressure forced him to think hard and to take action and start writing. How To Get Your Podcast On Spotify - The Podcast Report

Spotify is a hot topic. I chat about Spotify and its relationship to podcasts on today's show. This month, I am heading out to Social Media Marketing World in San Diego. It's an amazing event, and I will have a recording of my panel in a future episode. I never miss one, and I don't know if I ever will. This is a great event. If you go, I will see you there. This event is filled with many approachable people who can be guests on your show. It's a large event, so you need to be strategic with your approach. Last week, I had Steve Olsher on. My take and his take on finding podcast guests at Social Media Marketing World is a bit different, but I do appreciate what he has done with changing the game. Tip of the Week: As a podcaster, you have an intimate relationship with your audience. Yet, you will ask me questions like what is most important to my audience? If you want to know how often your shows should come out, how long it should be, or how important consistency is ask your audience. You have built the relationship and intimacy. Now use it to make your show better. Go direct to your audience, and when they respond do what they tell you to do. Your show will be better by doing so. How to Get Your Podcast on Spotify: [04:08] We have seen my predictions for podcasts coming to streaming media platforms come true. [04:22] Spotify has made it easy. Pandora hasn't quite opened the gate. [04:39] If you are on Libsyn, and you put your podcast on Spotify, you will start to see interesting downloads. [05:56] Spotify is at the top, but they are not the clear winner. Although, they are a huge player. [06:23] I asked Siri to open a podcast on Spotify, but she opened it on iOS. [06:41] Rob Walch at The Feed talks about how the 18-30 female demographic is doing well on Spotify. Less than half the shows on Libsyn are set up on Spotify. [07:50] Top shows were language, horror, health, philosophy, history, science, medicine, business and true crime. [08:22] The Podcast Report is available on Spotify. 1.1% of my audience came from Spotify. [09:07] In a future episode, I'll be having Joel Comm from Bad Crypto on. This show is exploding, I can't wait to have him on. [09:23] He has seen over a quarter of a million downloads on Spotify. [09:37] Spotify is a big place. If you haven't submitted to Spotify, you should do so. [09:59] The big picture as it relates to Spotify. Number one. Go to where your audience is. Whatever platform you are on, set things up so that your podcast is everywhere. [10:30] My Spreaker stats are less than my Spotify stats. I'm still on Spreaker because I like being where my audience is. [11:07] Put your podcast on YouTube. Leverage the tech that makes it awesome. [11:50] Stop talking about iTunes. If your listeners are on another platform and you keep talking about iTunes, it means you don't know who they are. [12:28] Do you have tech that will grow with you? Hand things over to the people who know what's going on. Don't waste your time trying to do all the small technical stuff yourself. [13:14] Pandora is coming very soon. At some point, even Microsoft, will pull off some type of podcast strategy. [13:52] Have you cleaned up your paths? I was looking at a very popular show, and their album art is actually different on iTunes. Make sure your paths are correct. [14:24] Does your site reflect reality? Make sure you link out to all of the places that your podcast is at. [16:04] Playing podcasts make sense for Spotify. They don't have to pay royalties on podcasts. [16:21] Are you making a show or a podcast? Don't limit yourself by calling your show a podcast, because some people might not understand that they can get it on their platform of choice. [17:25] Short-term idea get yourself on Spotify. For a long-term idea, get yourself on a system that makes it easy to get on platforms like Spotify. [17:49] Let people know that your show is available on these alternative platforms. [19:14] Get on Spotify. Make it easy. Make sure you have the stats and deal with it. [19:25] The bigger picture is if your content is everywhere, it makes it easy for your audience to find you. The Podcast Guest Problem - The Podcast Report

A lot of people believe that a podcast must be an interview. This is an interesting problem. This episode is an interview, but that is not always the case. People are paying tons of cash to get guests for their podcasts. Some of these guests turn out to be good some don't. There are all sorts of options for getting guests from high end services that run into thousands of dollars to databases, but none of these are perfect. Someone who is doing 52 podcast episodes a year needs a way to connect with guests. Having someone on your team taking care of this is the best solution, but what if you don't have that? Steve Olsher invited me to his New Media Summit. This was like speed dating for podcast guests. This was an interesting solution. Steve loves his event and is excited about promoting it. He also shares some serious knowledge bombs about topic of influence articulation, the need to get to the decision maker, being an engaging guest, and the concept of the bounce. Tip of the Week: Your podcast audio doesn't have to be perfect. Your job is to get your message out. You want to make it sound good, but you don't have to be in front of a professional microphone. It's fine to broadcast your podcast. Don't let the naysayers tell you otherwise. Position your audio as exactly what it is and let your listeners know that this recording is less than perfect. Finding Podcast Guests, Topic of Influence, Being Engaging, and Bounce: [06:17] Steve is an online player, not an enthusiast. Instead of a service, he offered podcast guest speed dating. [07:11] Steve hosts the Reinvention Radio Podcast and was getting hit up with guest offers. It occurred to Steve that there wasn't a great way to find guests and become guests. He created a forum to do this along with how to leverage and monetize this media. New Media Summit is the event or forum that Steve created. [08:59] It won't be in the speed dating format in the future. They plan on using a format that will work a lot better for everyone involved. [09:51] Everyone there was up to something interesting. They are now going to give people the floor to pitch everyone in attendance. Steve thinks everyone will leave with a lot of bookings. [14:46] Why is it so hard for shows and talent to connect? To develop meaningful relationships is to spend time with people. It's hard to know if a guest will be good without knowing them. [16:32] Steve likes to turn his events into a big old-fashioned wedding. [17:17] We love to position podcasting as intimate. This type of intimacy requires a relationship. [19:32] It is amazing what can happen over the course of three days together. Some of the larger events are very cliquish. This makes it hard to connect at a meaningful level. [24:55] How to get guests on your show. Learn how to articulate who you are and what your value add is. Have a great hook. [26:34] Sam Horn talks about the eyebrow test and being able to create a level of intrigue and interest. This is a big part of the process. Have a hook and articulate that value add in two to four words. [27:17] Share a summation of your topic of influence. Use these three or four words as a search tool. Type in your topic of influence. [28:13] If no one is talking about your topic of influence then there is no interest in it. Articulate your topic of influence and then leverage it. [28:54] Have a media one sheet. Also understand who the decision makers are and the players in the world you are interested in. [29:32] Topic of influence. Identify the shows you want to be on. Get booked on those shows. [29:47] Be an engaging guest. This is a skill. You want to do 200-300 interviews before being on those big shows. A lot of people just want to jump to the front of the line. [31:03] Enroll people into your ecosystem. The secret is all about bounce. You have to bounce them from a passive listener to being an active prospect in your ecosystem. [31:47] Monetize your visibility. So many people have great shows, and their guests don't know how to monetize their visibility. [32:51] Understand how focuses strategic attention is so important. If you want to be on a show that brings value, the approach is more than filling out a form. [34:15] There are a lot of ways to invest your time. Look at the number of hours people spend chasing shiny objects. Average people need to jump start their visibility process. Figure out if what you are doing provides ROI. [36:34] There are plentiful opportunities in three days of New Media Summit. [39:13] You are the solution to someone else's problem. There are people waiting for what you offer. Share your what with strategic abandon. 3 Massive Benefits Of Business Podcasting - The Podcast Report

I just got back from attending Allison Maslan's Business Blast Off Event in Las Vegas. Allison Maslan is a client, a friend, and a female business juggernaut. I was able to speak at her event this weekend about podcasting. What's neat is that it wasn't a podcasting conference or an Internet marketing conference. This wasn't the traditional type of conference that I usually speak at. This was an event where everybody that attends puts together their business blueprint for the year ahead. The idea of speaking about podcasting to an audience that is putting together their business blueprint was really exciting. I spoke for about 50 minutes. What you are about to hear is a segment that I recorded in the middle of the presentation. I talk about three massive benefits of business podcasting. Making podcasting a part of your bigger business strategy is how all of this works together. Tip of the Week: Your podcast might not end as a podcast. It could become a CD or an audio book. It could become something that needs better fidelity than that final project you made when you made that podcast. Keep your project archives. Keep a copy of everything that has been done. Put it someplace intelligent. Catalog it and maybe even store it offsite. Don't just keep the final project. Do this, and you'll thank me someday. 3 Massive Benefits Of Business Podcasting: [05:31] 3 Massive benefits for podcasting in the business space. [06:12] Access to you without access to you. When the same question is asked over and over again. Put it online, and you only have to answer it once. [06:31] I have a podcast that can be found on Google, Amazon, or Apple. You are associated with some of the coolest technologies in the world to share your information. [06:54] Crazy fast product development. I am getting paid to speak, and I am recording a podcast on the side. Welcome to the wonderful world of podcast development. [07:09] This is a product. You might be reading this transcript in one of my books or this might be on a CD. I don't know how you are consuming this, but I am making a product. [07:20] 3 of my favorite things in the podcast space. Access to you without access to you. Leveraging the biggest names like Apple, Amazon, Google, and Medium. Podcasts are also crazy fast podcast development. [07:49] Podcasting is easy. I did it on stage with my iPhone and a microphone. Podcasting is easy. The focus is not the tech. The focus is the content. [08:19] Access to you is huge. This podcast has been downloaded tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of times more than I have been able to chat with people individually about podcasting. [08:32] People get the training and education and access to me in a way that is scalable and cool. [08:40] Podcasting is leveraging the biggest names. You could be listening on Alexa or any device out there. I leverage the biggest names to get my message out. [09:11] It is crazy fast product development. I actually created a podcast while speaking from stage at a paid speaking gig. [09:24] Podcasting is easy. It's what you do with it that is hard. This is what we chat about on this show. Erica Mandy, The Newsworthy, What Comes Next In Podcasting? - The Podcast Report

Erica Mandy is the host and content producer of theNewsWorthy a Monday through Friday podcast that shares fast, fair, and fun news you need in less than 10 minutes. She used her background in journalism combined with curiosity about what people wanted to create something new and different. I'm excited about today's interview with Mandy, and there are two things that you want to track. Number one is that it is an interesting model. I've spent a decade plus in podcasting, and I've heard there is nothing new. Well Erica did something new. Number two is that it does have the potential to change things. With new announcements from Pandora, Spotify, and Apple the industry is changing, and this is a model that might change with it. We also talk about New & Noteworthy. Tip of the Week: Instead of worrying about what microphone to use, you should be focussing on what your message is. What are you telling your audience? What makes you and your show unique? Once you figure that out, the microphone will come into play. Don't start with the tech. Start with the message, and you'll have a podcast that lasts. Changing Behavior By Doing Something Different with Erica Mandy: [02:13] Erica Mandy produces, compiles, and performs a daily news show. I thought it wasn't going to catch on or last, but it is lasting and everyone loves it. [02:41] Erica has been a broadcast journalist for the last ten years. She realized that people she knew weren't watching the news because if was too depressing or boring or they would get lost in biased clickbait. [03:06] She felt she was uniquely positioned to provide something different. She loves good news and likes to tell things in an upbeat way. She also has a background in journalism. [03:16] She quit her job and started theNewsWorthy. Erica has had success in the first few months and got her first sponsor Sol Organics who sell organic cotton sheets and bedding. [03:39] Her show is M-F and it comes out at 4:00 AM Eastern time. Her show production takes about 3-4 hours to write, about an hour and a half to record and edit, then she publishes, writes an email, and does the show notes. [03:58] It's a full day. The morning before that is when I do social media, networking, and marketing. [04:17] She is also testing a weekly interview. [04:30] When she launched she was picked up by iTunes. She was on New & Noteworthy for about two weeks. She said she got about 700-1000 new listeners that stuck with her. [05:58] A Siri based daily news show is announced by iTunes. Pandora is working on creating a podcast version of the music genome project. Spotify is embracing everybody with some new podcast formats, images, and news. [06:34] A lot of people seem to be picking up the idea that we might need daily newscast. [07:06] People still want to know what is going on while they are on the go. Then they can read more about the things that interest them the most. [07:10] Erica started theNewsWorthy because she knew that it was what she wanted and other people were telling her it was what they wanted too. [07:32] Because there is so much potential with podcasts the possibilities are endless. Traditional media is the last one to get on a trend. Erica wanted to be part of the news that was leading the way. [08:47] Online streaming now offers sports and people are cutting cable more than ever. [09:22] Erica thinks there is a whole path for current recent podcasts that inform you with current news. [10:01] Once we figure out to offer things people will jump on it. [10:09] Paul thinks smart speakers, voice activated content, the daily routine, and the Pandora podcast genome project brings all of this together. [10:21] Erica's listeners are sticking around for 95% to 104% of her show. She gives listeners a new story every minute or so and keeps it moving. [11:33] Because people are consuming the whole show the format is viable. [11:55] Erica also offers links to all of the stories that she references on her show notes. [12:56] The change in behavior and the consumption and how podcasts somehow become part of someones day. A daily show is as natural as a morning cup of coffee. [14:15] How having a broader niche requires a sponsor with a broader market. [15:56] Erica is open to partnerships. If the emerging markets open things up, she feels that is really exciting. [16:57] How we know a lot about the podcast consumers. Teaming up with podcast sponsor acquisition experts will be interesting. [17:57] In the future, Erica would love to partner with an organization that provides a platform for discovery along with multi platform options like video. She is open to partnerships and being in more than one place. [19:45] She is open to having writing and editing help. She would like to have more help, so she can focus on the marketing and business development side of things. [20:57] Changes in behavior and opportunities that Erica's show represents. [21:44] When Erica started, she looked for what wasn't happening. She focus

A Podcasters Review Of Podcon - The Podcast Report

In 2010, I attended a little conference called Vidcon. The purpose was to bring content producers and audiences together. I went and was blown away. One of my first thoughts was when is PodCon going to happen. PodCon happened last year in December of 2017. I was a sponsor, and there was a great crowdfunding campaign. I wanted to be there, but something came up and I couldn't make it. Fortunately, Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting was there, and he is here today to share his review of PodCon. His review is insightful and encouraging. It is about the business of podcasting as well as the growth of podcasting. Tip of the Week: The world of connected speakers is exciting with so many big companies in the game or coming to the game. Podcasters want their shows available on these speakers, but do you have a title that is easy to say. Do you have a title for your podcast that doesn't sound like similar podcasts? The better the chance that the smart speaker can hear and understand what your podcast is, the better the chance that your customer will find you. A Podcasters Review Of PodCon with Dave Jackson: [03:17] I have known and loved Dave Jackson forever. This month I was supposed to go to PodCon, but wasn't able to attend. Fortunately, Dave Jackson went and is here to give his review of the event. [05:27] Dave encountered his first cosplay. Floors upon floors of people in costumes from elves ears to knights in shining tin foil. [06:20] Fiction podcasts were a whole new world for Dave. This is a super tight knit community that Dave wasn't a part of. There were probably a thousand people (according to Dave's estimate) in the room. [07:53] How there were hundreds of people in costume. Cosplay is an eye opening world of podcasting that Dave wasn't familiar with. [09:13] The cosplay people were very creative there was an area where you could draw on a wall and another area where you could play a board game of some type. There also had to be a raffle for a meet and greet because it was so popular. [10:56] How the scope of podcasting is so much bigger than we thought it was. [12:25] There were a lot of young people who were really into these shows, and there were a lot of females in the group. Dave was impressed with open, tight-knit, and creative these people were. [14:14] Dave quit asking if they were podcasters and started asking if they were content creators. [15:03] The original podcasters wanted to sound like the radio. The new podcasters are about stories and taking it into another new area that we haven't thought about. [15:44] Dave is super excited, because if he found this one community there is probably another community he hasn't discovered. This creates more potential content creators and listeners, and we need more listeners to stay in scale with the amount of podcasts created. [17:29] People were excited about and talking about the McElroys and Welcome to Night Vale. These people were treated like rock stars when they were announced. [20:09] Is this an event that business podcasters would go to? There were a couple of business podcasts like a podcasting 101 course, but they recommended SoundCloud and a Blue Yeti Microphone. Their monetization mostly focused on Patreon. This group wasn't business people. [22:22] The event was probably like a Lollapalooza. Maybe there won't be giant conventions for everyone, instead their will be smaller niche events. [23:17] Tom Merritt's Patreon page. He does the Daily Tech News Show and generates $240,000 a year on Patreon. [24:30] Dave would recommend that LibSyn goes next year. There were maybe 400 people in the how to podcast class. There were enough curious people that it wold be worth going to. [25:22] This was a niche podcast event with hype, excitement, and power. Paul missed this because he went to a fundraiser for Alice Cooper and was in a room with a bunch of rock stars. [26:30] PodCon was really well run, and the growth will be interesting to see. It's up to them to keep it niche or make it more about podcasting. [28:09] How Paul has so much respect for the Green brothers. He is definitely going to try and attend next year. [29:28] The more people are talking about podcasts, the more the industry grows. We are all in the business of creating content to inspire our audience. Driving Your Podcast to the Top of the iTunes Charts (VidSummit 2017 Presentation)

There is a lot to say about the VidSummit event. I can't say it all here. When I went in 2016, I didn't expect it to be as great as it was. 2016 was amazing. Then I was asked to come back and present in 2017, and that presentation is today's episode. The audio isn't as good as it should of be, but the show was first class. I brought a client of mine with me and at the end of the event, she made a suggestion that I actually have people watch this presentation before sending them as clients up the charts. Tip of the Week: How do I get people to subscribe to my podcast? How do I get people to visit my website? How do I get people to sign up for my email newsletter? The trick to all of these and more is simply to give them a reason to. They are happy just listening to your show, but the second you tell them what is in it for them then they will take further action. Keep in mind WIIFM or what's in it for me? Driving Your Podcast to the Top of the iTunes Charts (VidSummit 2017 Presentation): [05:02] Paul is introduced. He helps others expand their reach and revenue with no stress and drama. He tackles the changes in today's information economy. He is an 11 time #1 Amazon bestselling author. He is the secret weapon behind several number one podcasts and YouTube channels. He has worked with large companies like the US State Department, Microsoft, Pearson Education, and more. [05:36] Paul Colligan is here today to present how to Drive Your Podcast to the Top of the iTunes Charts. [06:13] Paul begins speaking and has an entire presentation for getting your podcast on Alexa and Google. [07:12] Getting to number one on iTunes is an interesting place to be. My client Brendan was also number one in other countries. [08:26] J.J. Virgin became number one in the health category. [09:12] How iTunes makes recommendations and this should be a life goal for all of you. [09:56] 47 million Americans are in their car with a 30 minute commute to work. All you have to do is be better than drive time radio. [10:40] When someone takes you with them to work or on the beach or to the gym this is intimacy. [11:14] Three options for climbing the charts. The real climb with the real audience. The real climb with the fake audience. Number three is Photoshop. I am hear for the real climb with the real audience. [12:26] The Infinite Dial study by Edison. The smart speaker report with Alexa, etc. Do what is good for the service and the service will do what's good for you. [13:42] Time at YouTube makes YouTube money. Apple wants consumers of Apple products. If you give Apple a reason to promote what you are doing, they will promote you. Apple wants subscribers. Apple promotes subscribers. They come back with repetition. The best consumers are subscribers. [16:51] iTunes algorithm hasn't changed in over a decade. Get as many subscribers as needed in a 24 hour period to get as far as you want. [17:40] If you do a concentrated attack you can beat the big guys. Pick a single day. Promote subscribes. Take screenshots, enjoy the rankings, and have a fantastic episode two. Give your base what they want, and they will continue to listen. [19:41] Subscribers come on a regular basis. Can an email actually become a nuisance. [21:11] New and Notable is broken. They haven't changed in 14 months. It doesn't matter, it's broken. [22:12] You have to launch with a lot of episodes. This is guru talk, actually the less episodes on the page, the more reason to subscribe. [23:43] How zero reviews mean nothing. [25:26] Focusing your audience on a one 24 hour period. Open up the email gates, get to number 1 then stop, and open the gates the next day. [27:14] Look in iTunes and you will know if you are number one. The smart marketing could be strategic about this. [27:52] This won't work if you don't have enough email addresses. [29:46] Apple has made a lot of decisions based on new consumers, but I believe they will stay with subscribers for a long time. [31:41] Determining the value of a listener and doing Facebook ads to stay at the top of the charts. Emails and subscribes to win. Have an email series that says that you have launched your show. Launch season two. [32:48] Brendan did this. He asked subscribers to go to iTunes and subscribe. Live to subscribe. Take you audience to action on launch day. Please help me climb up the charts. [34:55] Make it as easy as possible for subscribers to subscribe. WIIFM give them a reason to subscribe. Go with a live push and tell them why to subscribe. [36:02] Putting a $299 course on iTunes for a few hours and hitting number one. [36:42] Using TubeBuddy, you just have to be faster than you competition. The competition is low for video podcasts right now. All you have to do is get more subscribers with your email push. [38:27] Do what is best for Apple and make great content. [39:46] Apple has announced they will have stats for everyone this year. We will get page views, downloads, streams, and how far people have listened. [40

Podcast Predictions: Looking Ahead to 2018 - The Podcast Report

It's always fun to close up the end of the year with a podcast prediction show. We will look at last year's predictions and what actually happened. We will also take a look ahead and predict what is coming up in the world of podcasting. Tip of the Week: Create a podcast monetization plan before you launch your show or before you start your new season. It is always easier to test and modify a plan than to try and make something fit into a certain box. Figure out a plan, implement that plan, and test to see if it is working. Be smart and do it right with a monetization plan that works for you. Podcast Predictions Looking Ahead to 2018: [01:28] It is time for podcast predictions for 2018. I did pretty well with last years predictions, and I think I will do even better with next years predictions. [01:38] No new podcast consumption models in 2017. Anchor gave it a shot, but most people went back to regular consumption methods. No new consumption paradigms for 2018 either. Podcast isn't broken. [02:26] At least one number one show would have no ad insertions. People doing podcasts about their products makes sense. The most powerful and profitable podcasts do this. [03:08] My last prediction for 2017 would be that there would be a new tool set from Apple, but not from Google. [03:56] A guy at Podcast Movement grilled me on my take on Google and podcasts. This guy was from Google. They have video and their smart speaker is better than Alexa, but so far crickets on podcasts from Google. I got my predictions right. [05:00] I have three predictions for new year, and there is a good chance these will come true for 2018. [05:15] Number 1: Minimal if any embracing of the new iTunes tags from the other players like Google, Stitcher, etc. I don't see them embracing the tags, but I think embracing the tags would be a good idea. [05:30] The tags make podcasting more powerful. This will delay growth a little bit, but eventually these players will have to deal Apple. [05:55] Number 2: Something else unexpected from Apple. They seem to have a new focus on iTunes, and they are probably dreaming up something unexpected. The stats are pretty fantastic, and we will focus on them in another episode. Apple and iTunes will introduce something else and the other platforms will have to decide if they want to play in that world. [06:59] Number 3: First video podcast hit in 2018. There hasn't been a real certified hit. This is the year of a video podcast hit. [07:53] At Vid Summit the presentation was on moving your YouTube show to a video podcast. A lot of interest might come from YouTube or media space. [08:14] There will be more video integration in players such as the Echo Show. [08:31] The three predictions are minimal if any embracing of the new iTunes tags, something else unexpected from Apple, and the first video podcast hit. 2018 is going to be huge. Renee Wang - The Podcast Report

Renee Wang the founder and CEO of CastBox is here to talk about how CastBox connects users with podcasts, radio, audio books, talk shows and more in one app. This episode will be an interesting look into some of the opportunities in the podcast space. I have not been a big fan of more podcast directories or apps, yet Renee is willing to come on the show and answer the question of does the world need another podcast directory or app. Renee is based in San Francisco. Tip of the Week: It's always easier to set the audio up correctly from the beginning than to try and fix it later. It's always smarter to set everything up the best possible way to begin with to get the best possible results. You can always edit and change things from there. Interview with Renee Wang the CEO of CastBox: [04:23] Renee majored in psychology, but she taught herself how to code and then ended up working at Google for four years. She has experience with apps on a global scale. [05:13] Renee quit Google to go back to China and code the first version of CastBox. [05:44] Renee was an OPG Account Manager at Google. It was her job to help developers to promote and monetize their apps. [06:46] Renee sold her house for seed money for the project. She has now closed a B round. [07:40] How at the end of 2016 a lot of investors are now interested in audio again. Because of the audio connectivity between Alexa, Google Home, and car connectivity. It is believed that by the end of 2020 all cars will have Internet connections. [08:47] Now investors are proactively looking for her business. She has now closed four investment rounds in a year. [09:53] The app will help content providers augment information. Other investors are looking for a technology play. Both sides are important from the aggregation and the technology. [11:56] How there is still an opportunity for audio aggregators the same way that when Yahoo existed there was still a door for Google to break in to. [12:31] How CastBox is organizing audio, understanding text, tags, and time stamps. It can search to the specified minute and second of the content that the person wants. Renee still feels that there is room for improved technology to create a better audio experience. Including the ability to search inside of audio. [14:07] The CastBox search feature will give timestamped results from a search. [15:12] Audio is like a Pandora's box. You never know what is inside. We are trying to open the Pandora's box of audio and make content easier to find. [15:56] The challenges of putting content into your smart device. CastBox is leveraging technology to reorganize content and give users the ability to access it. [16:56] CastBox is trying to index all available open source content. [18:03] Amazon's S3 transcription service. [18:46] The last round raised $16 million total. There are several ways to monetize. They are co producing original content and providing distribution. [19:56] They are also looking at a premium revenue share model. They are number 1 in Korea. [20:54] How they are trying to conquer the audio portion of AI as well as indexing and providing better services to content providers and listeners. [22:14] There are still more opportunities for startups to grow. [23:25] How it is important for content providers to grow their audience by having their work more easily available, and it is easier to monetize globally and worldwide including specific niche content. [27:37] How Renee is on email every day to see the user experience and make CastBox better, and CastBox is constantly being updated to upgrade the user experience including to help visually impaired people. [29:28] They are really flexible and moving fast to understand needs and create a better user experience. [31:01] How Paul is well-known in the industry, and Renee was interested in Paul's input. Jennifer Briney - The Podcast Report

Jennifer Briney is profiting from bitcoin and more, and she is making the same amount of money regardless of what her stats say. I was introduced to Jennifer Briney by Adam Curry at a previous Podcast Movement. I liked her and what she was doing. I knew that I wanted to continue the conversation. Today, I am talking with Jennifer in my first interview of the season. This interview was recorded a few weeks back, so I hint at some things that are coming up, and you should be able to put it all together. Jennifer is the host of Congressional Dish a podcast that helps raise awareness about what Congress is actually doing. Tip of the Week: Take the time to ask if it makes sense, when some podcast expert, guru, or teacher tells you to do something specific on your podcast. Why are they doing this? There are a lot of bad ideas, teachings, and concepts in podcasting. If you take a few minutes to think through the idea and ask if it really makes sense, you might be producing a better podcast. Talking Politics: [00:03:07] How Paul was a political science major in college. [00:03:28] Jennifer invented the Congressional Dish about five years ago. She wanted to share what she was finding. For two and a half years she read every bill passed in Congress, until she realized that it was impossible. [00:04:17] She educated herself and did it on the air. Now that she knows how it works, she picks topics that are interesting to her. She also sticks to her goal of getting people to pay attention to what Congress is actually doing. [00:05:06] When traveling abroad Jennifer realized she didn't know much about American politics. [00:06:28] In her senior year of college she really started asking questions. [00:06:46] She immersed herself in understanding how the media functioned. She started asking questions of what is our place in the world and why are we doing these things. [00:07:43] In 2007, she discovered Air America and other on demand media outlets talking about politics. This is when she started paying attention to Congress and watching C-SPAN. [00:09:31] Jennifer wanted to find stories that aren't talked about and share her research with the rest of us. [00:11:04] Jennifer is monetizing a niche that no one else is. She spent a year not trying to make money, which established the show. [00:12:13] After a year, she tried to make the podcast listener supported. [00:13:52] People send in what they think the show is worth. [00:14:17] Putting a lot of work into your shows before pushing record to be listener supported. [00:15:35] Doing work that other people don't want to do is the key. [00:16:51] Jennifer has a global audience and her topics affect people all over the world. [00:17:46] Libsyn recently upgraded their stats. Some shows are affected and some aren't. Jennifer's stats dropped when the changes happen. [00:18:46] The stats changed and now her numbers are cut in half. Jennifer was invincible to the stat change monetarily because of her user supported mode. [00:20:05] Jennifer also takes bitcoin because people wanted to help her anonymously. She now has tens of thousands of dollars in bitcoin. [00:21:28] There is no reason not to have a bitcoin link. It's gambling because who knows if the value will continue to rise or drop. [00:22:27] How long should a podcast be? [00:24:18] The setup for listener generated revenue is easy, although asking for the money can be uncomfortable. Ads also make shows a little bit worse. It doesn't hurt to try especially at first. [00:25:56] The freedom of being listener supported instead of answering to advertisers is amazing. Jennifer can say whatever she wants. [00:29:16] Jennifer has a VA and some part time people and contractors. Collecting Email Addresses From Your Podcast - The Podcast Report

Everyone is talking about building email lists and setting up funnels. Today, we talk about how to build an email list through your podcast and how to set up a simple funnel. We are also launching the Podcast Episode Funnel Tool. You may have seen this last week when I gave you the Podcast App Worksheet. Tip of the Week: Never name your podcast something that is hard to spell. Not just hard for you to spell, but hard for your listeners to spell. They hear about your great podcast and they search for it, but if they can't spell it, they can't find you. Always have a podcast name that is easy to spell. Collecting Email Addresses From Your Podcast [02:15] How building a list with your podcast is the most profitable podcast monetization strategy out there. [02:56] A story where 85% of people who bought through a program have downloaded something as a result of the podcast. [04:04] It's hard to market and sell on a podcast, but easy with an email list. Use the podcast to build the email list. [04:21] Season 5 private Facebook community. [04:49] Lists aren't important for just marketing. They are also important for the interest identification that comes from it. [05:01] How you can use your newsletter segment signups to find out what people are interested in. This is powerful market research. Build an inventory of names that expands the value of what you are doing. [06:01] To get the email address, you have to give your listeners something of value. In today's show you are getting a funnel worksheet. [06:31] Last week I gave away a podcast app cheat sheet. That is a very specific segment. The funnel worksheet from this week is also a specific segment. You want to do the same thing. [06:57] Today, I would put everybody on ClickFunnels. We had Russell Brunson of ClickFunnels on in Episode 115. [07:32] We have teamed with ClickFunnels to create a funnel process for podcasts. You can see the funnels that we use. [08:08] You want to make a template for the process, so you can change a few things and use it over and over again. [08:31] To get an email address your listener goes to a web page gives you the email and then downloads the giveaway item. My FAVORITE method! [08:53] You can also send a blank email. Doable but outdated. [09:10] Texting in is also popular. Emails don't bother people, texts can bother people. Texting is not my favorite. [10:16] If you get the funnel tool, you can see this whole process. [10:26] Come up with a plan and a giveaway before your show, then talk about it on the show, then give people the stuff. [11:15] ClickFunnels attaches to your email sending service. [11:26] Selling on your podcast will always be hard. Sending someone to sign up for an email is easier. This process can be used to do things later, and it is what I recommend. [12:03] Make it simple and easy, and use your podcast to continue to build rapport. [12:38] Own the list and go with a system you will be with for awhile. I recommend ClickFunnels. [13:05] Mail to your list on a regular basis. [13:58] Realize the nature of emails. Make your emails short brief and to the point. [14:50] There are people who want to hear from you by email and people who don't want to hear from you by email. [16:41] Give great content on the podcast. Offer an opt in whenever you can. Use those email addresses to do further marketing. What Do The Changes To The iOS 11 Podcasts App Mean To Podcasters? - The Podcast Report

Here's a quick catch up. Podcast Movement 2017 was fantastic, and I'm looking forward to Podcast Movement 2018. The new Apple podcast app is out along with iOS11, the new iPhone X, and the Apple Watch 3 that I can make calls on. In this episode, I'll be chatting about the new app and in future podcasts I'll discuss other things from Apple. There is also some great stuff out by other companies this year. The new website is launched. We also have a giveaway for today's episode. Tip of the Week: Tell your audience to subscribe. Smart podcasters know that podcasting is about subscriptions, and the best audience comes from subscribers, but your audience might not realize that they can subscribe and have your show sent to them automatically. Podcast App Changes in iOS11: [03:04] Apple has made some huge changes to the podcast app, and I'm going to talk about them in this episode. You can also grab the PDF I made that includes all of the changes. [03:58] There are podcast seasons, stats from Apple, show types, episode types, and a best of the podcast option. All of these together become really important. [04:26] Podcast seasons. Seasons have been around for a long time. Seasons are powerful because you can get thematic about your show. [05:23] Building your podcast as a season changes the game. Seasons are a fantastic way to chunk together podcast episodes. [06:59] There are rumors that there may be options to click and download entire seasons. Seasons have been around for awhile, but they are now supported and something that you should take advantage of. [07:15] Apple stats. In the past, we had to use what we could from our download stats. [08:26] These will only be Apple stats. This won't be your entire audience, but you will see trends like how long your audience listens. These are huge, so start thinking about it and be willing to make a change. [09:32] Show types. The App plays the most recent episode when you subscribe. The average audience member listens to whatever podcast is given to them. [10:15] There are serial types of shows that you may want your audience to listen to in a specific order. You can now set that inside of iTunes. You can start with the episode of your choosing or the most recent episode. [11:25] Episode types. Now we have three types of episodes: full episodes, trailer episodes, and bonus episode. Being able to tightly define your podcast experience is exciting. [12:58] Most of the podcasting platforms have these options in play. If your host doesn't, it may be time to look for other options. Seasons, stats, show types, and episode types are four very big new Apple podcast app features. [13:24] Best of the podcast. If you search shows now on the app, there is an idea of the best of the podcasts. They pick an episode and decide that it is the best of the podcasts. [14:11] For some reason my March 15th episode was chosen as the best of my podcasts on season 4. We don't know why Apple decides on certain episodes, but it must be based on downloads or how long they were listened to or some other metric. [15:30] Podcast seasons are now part of the system. Stats and tracking will help with future decisions. Show types will let your audience download the podcast in the order you like. You can play with bonuses and trailers when in between episodes, and best of the podcast will allow you to treat your podcast like the media entity that it is. [16:56] You're not your client. You may not be interested in tags. Take the time to do the tags and set things up to provide a better experience for your audience. This will become the new standard and set things up for future listeners. Links and Resources: Podcast Movement Michael Hyatt Serial Podcast We love social interaction at the podcast report. Podcast Outliers - More Damage Than Good? The Podcast Report

Three Tasty Flavors Of Podcast Monetization - The Podcast Report

When the team at Social Media Marketing World asked me to do a panel on podcast monetization, I honestly didn't think I'd get the team I was hoping for. Rob Walch makes his podcast money the way most people think of podcast monetization: He has ads on his shows. As a bonus - he helps advertisers sell ads through Libsyn. He has a lot to say on the topic. Gary Leland makes his podcast money selling his own products on his own website. He sells nothing marketing or podcast related. I'm going to make you listen to this episode to get his story. You are going to love this guy. John Lee Dumas represents an exciting hybrid of selling both his own products while running ads for the products of others. He continues to be a strategic inspiration to many of you.
