Oh, boy.Phillies ace Zack Wheeler had another start that further established himself as one of the best postseason pitchers in baseball history, but it’s difficult to win when the offense can’t string together a couple hits in a row. That’s exactly what happened in the Phillies’ 6-2 loss to the Mets in Game 1 of the 2024 National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park. Wheeler allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings, but the Phillies managed just one hit between Kyle Schwarber’s leadoff homer and the eighth inning. The Phillies had such a good opportunity to clinch the NL East at some point on their just complete seven-game road trip through Milwaukee and New York.They didn’t.They went 2-5 on the trip, including three of four losses to the Mets at Citi Field. These types of trips happen, but the Phillies could face the Brewers and Mets in the postseason. The Phillies only need to win one more game to make the postseason. They only need to win two more games to win the NL East.It’s going to happen.But the Phillies fell into a first-place tie with the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, following Thursday night’s loss to the Mets at Citi Field. Taijuan Walker allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. He is 3-7 with a 6.91 ERA, which is the fifth-highest ERA for any Phillies pitcher since 1901 (minimum 80 innings pitched). The Phillies are 4-11 when Walker starts. It isn’t just Walker, however. The Phillies’ No. 5 starter has been a problem since Spencer Turnbull got hurt in June. The Phillies’ No. 5 starters have a combined 14.14 ERA in their last eight starts. They are 2-6 in those games. Those losses could be the difference between having home-field advantage through the NLCS and playing Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium, if both teams get that far.Jim and Todd also talk about the Phillies’ offense. Kyle Schwarber has provided Phillies fans many memorable moments since he signed a four-year contract in March 2022. It was a fantastic coincidence then that he joined “The Phillies Show” during a road trip through Toronto and Miami. Schwarber hit three home runs in a big comeback win on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. The Phillies got to Kansas City this weekend in desperate need for a good series, and for some good at-bats.They got both.They won the series against the Royals. Every baseball fan growing up in the Delaware Valley dreams of playing for the Philadelphia Phillies one day. Tyler Phillips’ dreams came true. The South Jersey native and Bishop Eustace graduate grew up a diehard Phillies fan. He joined the organization in July 2021 and worked his way into a big league promotion earlier this month.
