Ep 53Royal Flush

The Phillies got to Kansas City this weekend in desperate need for a good series, and for some good at-bats.They got both. They won the series against the Royals. They scored 11 runs on both Saturday and Sunday. It was their first time scoring 10 or more runs in consecutive games since Aug. 6-7, 2022. It was very encouraging to see players like J.T. Realmuto, Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh and Garrett Stubbs have big weekends. But it wasn’t just the offense. The Phillies got some good pitching from Ranger Suárez, who rejoined the rotation, and No. 6 starter Kolby Allard, who threw the ball well on Sunday. Conversely, are the Phillies reaching the end with Taijuan Walker? His next turn into the rotation is uncertain. You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 52"It's Play Well or Go Home"

The Phillies lost two of three this week in Atlanta, which wouldn’t be such a big deal, except it is a continuation of mediocre play since the All-Star break.Only one team has a worse record in baseball than the Phils since the break: the Chicago White Sox.The offense’s continued struggles are concerning. Everybody is swinging and missing too much as teams continue to throw them breaking balls and offspeed pitches outside the strike zone. Is there a fix for this? Do the Phillies need to make some lineup and personnel changes? Clearly, something needs to happen as the Phillies open a three-game series on Friday night in Kansas City. Ep 51Whit's Revenge

You knew Whit Merrifield would have a hit or two in Tuesday night’s series opener against the Phillies at Truist Park. The Phillies released Merrifield on July 12. They were on a 106-win pace at the time. They are 12-20 since. Coincidence? Almost certainly yes. It wasn’t just Merrifield who beat the Phillies on Tuesday. The top three Phillies hitters went 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts. The Braves retired the final 17 batters they faced. José Alvarado walked four in less than an inning. Not a good way to start another difficult stretch.Ruben, Jim and Todd also answer your questions: everything from Bryce Harper’s health to Scott Kingery to The Phillies Show scented candles to unwritten rules for beat writers. Ep 50The Right Angle

The Phillies had a team meeting last week before a game against the Marlins. They are 4-1 since. Is the worst finally behind them? The Phillies will find out this week, when they open a six-game road trip in Atlanta. There were plenty of good signs from the Phillies, including big weeks from Trea Turner and the rotation. But the weekend could have been better. Following fun Alumni Weekend celebrations, including the late great David Montgomery being inducted onto the Wall of Fame, the Phillies lost Sunday’s series finale against the Nationals. The Phillies had the tying run at the plate with no outs in the ninth, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson declined to use either Bryce Harper or J.T. Realmuto. Cal Stevenson grounded into a double play and Garrett Stubbs grounded out to end the game.Ruben, Jim and Todd have some thoughts on it.You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 42Breaking Down the Phillies’ Trade Deadline

The Phillies didn’t get a superstar player before Tuesday’s trade deadline, but did any team? No, not really. But the Phillies believe they addressed their areas of weakness. Less than an hour before the deadline, the Phils acquired White Sox left-hander Tanner Banks for infield prospect William Bergolla. Banks will replace left-hander Gregory Soto, who was traded to the Orioles for Double-A right-hander Seth Johnson and High-A righty Moisés Chace. The trades capped a bullpen reconstruction that featured two significant additions and two significant subtractions over the past five days. Saturday, the Phillies got closer Carlos Estévez from the Angels for pitching prospects George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri. Friday, they got Orioles outfielder Austin Hays on Friday for right-hander Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Cristian Pache. In: Estévez and Banks Out: Soto and Domínguez Ruben, Jim and Todd break down the trades, then dig into some of the things that haven’t been going well for the Phillies lately ... which is almost everything. You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/- TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshow- X: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshow- Threads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshow- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 41Hunter Pence joins the show!

The Philadelphia Phillies needed a right-handed bat before the July 2011 trade deadline, so Ruben Amaro Jr. picked up Hunter Pence from the Houston Astros. Pence became an immediate fan favorite. While Phillies fans wait to see if Dave Dombrowski, Sam Fuld and Co. will make another move before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline, take a stroll down memory lane with Pence, who put up huge numbers for the Phillies on their way to a franchise-record 102 games in 2011. Pence remembers the good times, the agony of losing to the Cardinals in the NLDS and being traded to the Giants in July 2012. In between, though, there are plenty of laughs, and a nice little surprise that illustrates just how popular Pence became in such a short period of time in Philadelphia.Love The Phillies Show? Ep 40Carlos Estévez and the Superstars

The Phillies made another trade over the weekend, acquiring Angels closer Carlos Estévez for a couple pitching prospects. It seems to be a perfect fit for the Phillies, who have been looking for more stability in the late innings. But is this it? Are the Phillies really finished making moves before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline? Ruben and Jim aren’t convinced, with Jim hearing that the Phillies continue to monitor the starting pitching market. Bryce Harper was asked Sunday how he feels about the Phillies as they are constructed heading into the final two months of the season, if Estévez and Austin Hays are the only two acquisitions president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski makes before the trade deadline. The Phillies have lost 8 of 12 and have played .500 for the past several weeks.“Yeah, the superstars got to show up,” Harper said. Ep 39The Austin Hays trade

The Phillies have been looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder for months. They got their man on Friday, when they acquired Austin Hays from the Orioles for Seranthony Domínguez and Cristian Pache.First reactions following the deal?Well, the Phillies didn’t give up a single prospect, meaning they still have plenty of quality players to deal to get a big bullpen arm.By trading Domínguez, the Phillies opened the door to acquiring more than one bullpen arm for the stretch drive.By acquiring Hays, Brandon Marsh could see more time in center field with Johan Rojas.Ruben, Jim and Todd break down the Hays deal, and what might be coming next for Dave Dombrowski and the rest of the Phillies’ front office before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483If you like us, give us a review!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep 38Tyler Phillips joins the show!

Every baseball fan growing up in the Delaware Valley dreams of playing for the Philadelphia Phillies one day. Tyler Phillips’ dreams came true. The South Jersey native and Bishop Eustace graduate grew up a diehard Phillies fan. He joined the organization in July 2021 and worked his way into a big league promotion earlier this month. How has Phillips done? Well, he struck out seven batters in relief in his debut against the Braves on July 7. He is 2-0 as a starter. He has struck out 15 and walked one in 16 innings overall. It’s been a wildly fun absolutely surreal experience. Phillips spoke about his long journey to the big leagues, what it means to him and his family to be pitching for his hometown team and much more, including signing autographs for kids and maybe one day asking Bryce Harper for an autograph for his own collection. A fun, thoughtful conversation with the Phillies’ rookie right-hander. Love The Phillies Show? Ep 37Phillies looking for bullpen help

The Phillies opened the second half of their season with a 2-4 road trip through Pittsburgh and Minnesota. It should have been 4-2, but the bullpen blew a couple late-inning leads. The Phillies already had been looking for a late-inning reliever before the July 30 trade deadline, but the pen’s recent struggles only reinforced the idea that they must find somebody, not only to help them in the regular season, but in the postseason, too.How far do the Phillies go? A half-season rental, which will be more affordable? Or a big fish who will carry a steep price?Ruben shares his experiences acquiring Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence in consecutive trade deadlines from 2009-11.You can watch the show on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/- TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshow- X: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshow- Threads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshow- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep 36Juicy Lucy Time

There are eight days remaining before the July 30 trade deadline, and the Phillies have needs One of them popped up on Friday, when José Alvarado blew a save in Pittsburgh. Alvarado hasn’t been as sharp as seasons past, perhaps reinforcing the front office’s belief that it needs to fortify the bullpen with another late-inning veteran reliever. The Phillies need a right-handed-hitting outfielder, too. Weston Wilson has played well since he replaced Whit Merrifield. Could he actually step up and fill that role, or must the Phillies find somebody else? Fortunately for the Phillies, Tyler Phillips has stepped up as the team’s No. 5 starter. The local kid shut down Pittsburgh in Sunday’s series finale, snapping the Phillies’ three-game losing streak to avoid a sweep. There are a few things that have impressed Ruben, Jim and Todd’s about the rookie’s early performances. They discussed. The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night in Minnesota. Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler are back. What do we hope to see from both of them? Plus, some late-inning food talk including walleye-on-a-stick and Juicy Lucys. Ep 35What to Watch in the Second Half

The Phillies won a franchise-record 62 games before the All-Star break. They sent a franchise-record eight players to the All-Star Game. There’s 11 days until the July 30 trade deadline. There’s less than 11 weeks before the postseason. Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss a few storylines to follow for the Phillies in the second half: Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suárez returning to dominance following recent back issues. Just keeping everything healthy and effective entering the postseason. Who do the Phillies get before the July 30 trade deadline? It would be great to see Bryson Stott, Seranthony Domínguez and others pick it up in the second half. Can Bryce Harper win a third NL MVP? Can Zack Wheeler win his first NL Cy Young? Can Trea Turner win the Phillies’ first NL batting title since 1958? Ep 34We've Only Just Begun

The Phillies finished the first half with a stinker on Sunday against the A’s, but with a franchise-record 62 wins at the All-Star break. It couldn’t have gone much better. Ruben, Jim and Todd spend the first day of the All-Star break looking back at the Phillies’ historic first half. They dig into the special performance from the rotation, but they can’t help but express concerns about its health. They name the Phillies’ first half MVP and Cy Young. No surprises there. They discuss first-half disappointments, too. But no matter how hard they tried to focus on the first half, they couldn’t help but think about the future, especially after watching A’s slugger Brent Rooker and A’s closer Mason Miller impress this weekend at Citizens Bank Park. What would it take to get one of them? What would it take to get both? More Phillies trade talk to come before the July 30 trade deadline. Ep 33"We Don't Care Who's Coming"

The Phillies entered the week believing they are the best team in baseball. Their sweep of the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park only reaffirmed those beliefs. “We don’t care who’s coming,” Johan Rojas said. “We don’t care who we are playing. We’re just going to beat them.” So many good things happened this week against L.A. Trea Turner continued to swing a hot bat, drawing comparisons to Jimmy Rollins’ 2007 NL MVP season. Phillies pitchers held Shohei Ohtani to three singles, striking him out in a few big spots. Cristopher Sánchez rebounded in a big way on Wednesday. Rojas made a fantastic catch in left-center field on Thursday night. Ruben, Jim and Todd dig into it all. They start the show by talking about a shocking confession Ruben made on the 94 WIP Morning Show on Thursday. Did he really call into WIP using a fake voice? Ep 32No More Speed Bumps

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber were back in the Phillies’ lineup for Tuesday night’s 10-1 victory over the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park. The lineup looked like a completely different animal with them in the No. 1 and 3 spots, respectively. But then Zack Wheeler left the game after the fifth inning because of left lower back tightness. Is there any reason to be concerned? Should he make his next start on Sunday against the A’s? Should the Phillies start somebody else and bring him back after the All-Star break? The guys dig into Wheeler’s situation. They also talk about Harper’s return, what happens with the No. 2 catcher once J.T. Realmuto returns and much more. The Phillies lost two of three this weekend in Atlanta, but they still have an eight-game lead in the NL East. Also, help is on the way. Kyle Schwarber will be activated from the injured list before Tuesday night’s series opener against the Dodgers. There is a chance Bryce Harper is activated, too. If not Tuesday, then perhaps before the end of the series. Ruben, Jim and Todd talk about getting Schwarber and Harper back before the break. The Phillies have a franchise-record seven players going to the All-Star Game in Texas: Harper, Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suárez, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm. There were some emotional reactions in the clubhouse when Rob Thomson announced those names. Which selections jumped out to the guys? J.T. Realmuto comes back after the All-Star break. Who goes to Triple-A? Garrett Stubbs or Rafael Marchán? Michael Mercado struggled Sunday. Who starts Saturday: Mercado or Tyler Phillips, the local kid who dazzled in his debut on Sunday? Ep 29By Any Means Necessary

The Phillies lost Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber to injuries late last week. They won two of their first three games without them. They won Friday following a brilliant pitching performance from Cristopher Sánchez. They won Sunday, overcoming a five-error afternoon to enjoy their biggest comeback victory of the year. They'll have to win any way then can until Harper and Schwarber return, possibly before the All-Star break. Ruben, Jim and Todd talk about life without Harper, Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto for the next few weeks. They dig into the Phillies’ All-Star candidates, then answer questions from The Phillies Show listeners: What top prospects would they consider untouchable before the July 30 trade deadline? What is going to happen to Whit Merrifield? What is their best Harry Kalas story? What’s on the grill for the Fourth of July? Ep 28Pushing 'Next Man Up' Principle

The Phillies reached the halfway point of their season on Thursday night with the best record in baseball. They are on pace to win a franchise-record 106 games. But here come the injuries. Before Thursday's game, the Phillies placed Spencer Turnbull on the 15-day injured list with a strained right lat. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Michael Mercado is expected to take his place in the short term. Then late in Thursday's game, Kyle Schwarber left with tightness in his left groin, while Bryce Harper hobbled up the first-base line with a left hamstring injury. How will the Phillies handle the potential losses of Harper and Schwarber, if either or both land on the IL? Will we see Buddy Kennedy, Johan Rojas, Weston Wilson or Darick Hall? Who hits leadoff if Schwarber misses time? Who hits third if Harper goes on the IL? How concerned should the Phillies be about the starting pitching depth? Ep 27Sánchez Down, Suárez To Go

The Phillies just signed left-hander Cristopher Sánchez to a four-year contract extension with two club options that could keep him in the Phils rotation through 2030. Ruben and Todd talk about Sánchez’s journey, from struggling big leaguer to bona fide stud in arguably Major League Baseball’s best rotation. Of course, once one deal is done, it’s natural to think about the next. Could an extension be coming for Ranger Suárez? Could the Phillies really sign another starter to a multiyear extension after signing Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Sánchez to multiyear deals? Ruben said locking up Ranger is a no-brainer. The guys also discuss the Phillies’ No. 5 starter situation with Taijuan Walker on the injured list and Spencer Turnbull taking his place. What happens if Turnbull picks up where he left off, while Walker gets healthy and starts throwing an effective splitter again? Decisions, decisions. Ep 26Cole Hamels joins the show!

The Phillies don't win the 2008 World Series without Cole Hamels. He went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five postseason starts, winning World Series MVP and NLCS MVP honors in the process. He lived up to the hype as the 17th overall pick in the 2002 Draft, giving the Phillies a homegrown ace they desperately needed for years. Is Hamels one of the greatest Phillies ever? Absolutely. The old-school stats say so, but so do the new ones. Hamels ranks 11th all-time in WAR by a Phillies player, according to Baseball Reference, just behind Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu, and just ahead of Chuck Klein and Curt Schilling.Hamels shared his favorite Phillies memories with Ruben, Jim and Todd before his June 21, 2024, retirement ceremony at Citizens Bank Park. He talked about getting drafted by the Phillies, the franchise's glorious run from 2007-11, drilling Bryce Harper with a pitch in 2012, throwing a no-hitter in his final Phillies start in 2015, and so much more.Love The Phillies Show? Ep 25A New Look in Center Field?

The Phillies are finally home after a grueling 20-game stretch in which they played 14 on the road, including two in London, three in San Francisco, three in Colorado and six in the AL East. The Phillies lost two of three over the weekend in Baltimore, which culminated in Rob Thomson getting ejected in Sunday’s series finale. It was the angriest anybody has ever seen the typically mild-mannered Canadian, who astutely picks and chooses his spots to send messages to his players. This seemed like one of those moments. The Phillies will play 10 of their next 13 games at Citizens Ban Park, and fans are likely to see a different lineup. First, Trea Turner is expected to be activated before Monday's series opener against the Padres. Signs point to Johan Rojas getting optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Is it the right time to option Rojas? How do the Phillies handle center field? How do they handle left? If Rojas is optioned, does it increase the likelihood that Dave Dombrowski finds an outfielder before the July 30 trade deadline? Ep 24Burgers, Boston and Baltimore

The Phillies returned from London and dropped two of three to the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Now, they have an even bigger test: a three-game series this weekend against the Orioles in Baltimore. The Phils are just 9-8 since May 23. Any reason to worry? The offense has cooled, but help is on the way. Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh could both be back before the end of the weekend. Does Marsh move to center field upon his return? If so, what happens to Johan Rojas? The guys answer some listener questions, including who would win a hot dog eating contest. Jim also takes a stroll down memory lane, recalling the time in Baltimore that legendary Phillies coach John Vukovich wanted to kill the Oriole Bird. Can Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchan handle the load while he is away? Do the Phillies plan to acquire a catcher before the July 30 trade deadline? Ep 22The British Invasion

The Phillies are back from the 2024 London Series, and almost everybody there seemed to enjoy themselves. We look back at some of the weekend’s most memorable moments, including Bryce Harper’s big Saturday night, appearances from several 2008 Phillies and the Phillie Phanatic’s hijinks. Rob Thomson said he wouldn’t mind going to London every year to play. But the Phillies are back in the U.S., ready to open a three-game series against the Red Sox in Boston. Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss the team’s recent outfield production, and how Nick Castellanos’ recent play -- .958 OPS last 10 games, and a .797 OPS last 30 games -- and Whit Merrifield’s productive weekend in London could solve that issue internally. Trea Turner could be back within the week. Brandon Marsh could be back soon, too. Do the Phillies play Edmundo Sosa a little in left field when Turner is back? It could provide another boos to the Phillies’ outfield. Maybe then the Phillies don’t need an outfielder before the July 30 trade deadline. Maybe then they use their trade capital elsewhere. Ep 20Rhys Hoskins Returns

The Phillies open a three-game series on Monday night against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, which means Rhys Hoskins will be back at the Bank for the first time since his Phillies career officially ended last fall. Ruben, Jim and Todd share their favorite stories and memories about Hoskins, who not only was a productive bat in the middle of the Phillies lineup or years, but a leader in the clubhouse and in the community. The Phillies might have lost Brandon Marsh to the injured list on Sunday night, when he strained his right hamstring. What are the options to replace Marsh in left field? Whit Merrifield, Kody Clemens and Cristian Pache immediately come to mind. Rob Thomson has hinted at Edmundo Sosa possibly seeing time in the outfield once Trea Turner returns. What about options they might have in Triple-A? Ranger Suárez dodged a bullet on Saturday, when a ball struck him in his right hand. He might pitch Saturday in London. He might not. If not, who does? Ruben, Jim and Todd try to wrap their minds around the Phillies' historic start, discussing what has jumped out to them and why they believe the players in the clubhouse will maintain their focus and continue to play with an edge the rest of the season. There is plenty of praise for Edmundo Sosa, who has thrived at shortstop while Trea Turner has been on the IL. Ep 16Kody and Co.

The Phillies swept the Nationals over the weekend, and Kody Clemens led the way. He hit a game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth inning on Saturday. He hit a go-ahead double in the fifth inning on Sunday. Ruben, Jim and Todd talk about Clemens' massive contributions, and what the future might hold for him. The Phillies are 34-14, tying the `93 and `76 Phils for the best 48-game start in club history. Only four teams in MLB have started 34-14 or better this century: 2023 Rays (34-14), 2016 Cubs (34-14), 2006 Tigers (34-14) and 2001 Mariners (36-12). Jim loves Rob Thomson's message to his players to keep the motivated. The gang also digs into Bryson Stott's turnaround; how the Phillies could make the case for four NL All-Star infielders with Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, Trea Turner and Stott; Cristopher Sanchez's development, which had him touching 98 mph in the sixth inning on Saturday; and this week's matchup against the World Series-champion Texas Rangers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But Wheeler struggled and just like that the Phillies lost the series finale in 10 innings. It happens. The gang discusses Wheeler's start, but also digs into something a little more concerning: Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto are dinged up.
