Ep 105Max Kepler's Health, Jeff Hoffman's Departure
Everybody is in a good mood today following the Eagles’ victory over Green Bay.New Phillies left fielder Max Kepler was upbeat last week when he talked about his upcoming season. The Phils signed Kepler to a one-year, $10 million contract in December. He will be their everyday left fielder. If Kepler is healthy, the Phils should see a boost in left. If not, it could be a problem. We reacted to Kepler’s comments about his health, joining a new team and more. We also reacted to Jeff Hoffman’s three-year, $33 million contract with the Blue Jays. Hoffman revamped his career in Philly, but it was clear he wasn’t returning with the Phillies focused on players on one-year contracts.Could the Phils sign another reliever before Opening Day? Barring a miracle, Juan Soto isn’t signing with the Phillies. He has received multiple $600 million offers, according to Fair Territory’s Ken Rosenthal. Soto could make a decision before the end of next week’s Winter Meetings in Dallas. We said on this show last week that the Phillies had not met with Soto. We even wondered if an offer would be made. It turns out, the Phillies have not made an offer.None of this should come as a surprise. The Phillies were never considered serious suitors for Soto, despite speculation. Do they have any chance at signing Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki? Ep 76RECAP: Game 4 NLDS – Phillies season “feels like a failure”
The Phillies’ season of enormous World Series-or-bust expectations ended on Wednesday night in New York with a 4-1 loss to the Mets in Game 4 of the NL Division Series.“Just feel like you failed,” Trea Turner said. “I think we had a fun season, we made some good memories and whatnot, but when it comes to winning a World Series, it feels like kind of a failure.”It was a crushing loss, but perhaps not a surprising one. The Phillies were baseball’s best team through early June, but played .500 the rest of the way. Something needs to be done to get this team over the hump. But what? Ep 74RECAP: Game 2 NLDS – Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper save the Phillies
It’s not that the Phillies couldn’t have come back to win the NLDS had they lost Game 2 on Sunday night. It’s that the odds would have been heavily against them. But after they continued to chase pitches out of the strike zone at an alarming rate through five innings in Game 2, Bryce Harper settled everybody’s nerves when he crushed a two-run homer into the batter’s eye in center field to cut the Mets’ lead to 3-2. Nick Castellanos, who got booed and Bronx cheered in the fourth, followed with a game-tying solo homer.Harper and Castellanos continued from there. They led the Phillies to a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory, which Castellanos ended with a single to left.Bryson Stott came through with a huge hit.Cristopher Sánchez pitched well.We also talk about Rob Thomson’s decision to bench Alec Bohm in Game 2, and if Edmundo Sosa might start at second base against a tough lefty in Game 3.Get unique throwback Phillies tees, hats & sweatshirts from local artists at their shops in Center City, Wayne & West Chester and at https://shibevintagesports.com/.You can watch this episode and others on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 73RECAP: Game 1 NLDS – Phillies waste Wheeler's latest epic October start
Oh, boy.Phillies ace Zack Wheeler had another start that further established himself as one of the best postseason pitchers in baseball history, but it’s difficult to win when the offense can’t string together a couple hits in a row. That’s exactly what happened in the Phillies’ 6-2 loss to the Mets in Game 1 of the 2024 National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park. Wheeler allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings, but the Phillies managed just one hit between Kyle Schwarber’s leadoff homer and the eighth inning. And by that time the Phillies two most trusted relievers (Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm) turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-1 deficit.Ruben, Jim and Todd break down a thoroughly disappointing Game 1, and discuss what needs to happen to even the series in Game 2.You can watch this episode and others on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 66Forecast: champagne showers
The Phillies had such a good opportunity to clinch the NL East at some point on their just complete seven-game road trip through Milwaukee and New York. They didn’t.They went 2-5 on the trip, including three of four losses to the Mets at Citi Field. These types of trips happen, but the Phillies could face the Brewers and Mets in the postseason. As concerning as that might, it’s also concerning that the Phillies struck out 81 times on the road trip, four shy of their most strikeouts in a seven-game span in franchise history. The Phillies can clinch the division as early as Monday night. We dig into the offense, Zack Wheeler’s brilliance and more.Get unique throwback Phillies tees, hats & sweatshirts from local artists at their shops in Center City, Wayne & West Chester and at https://shibevintagesports.com/.You can watch this episode and others on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 65A WTF night in NYC
The Phillies only need to win one more game to make the postseason. They only need to win two more games to win the NL East. It’s going to happen. But the Phillies fell into a first-place tie with the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, following Thursday night’s loss to the Mets at Citi Field. Taijuan Walker allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. He is 3-7 with a 6.91 ERA, which is the fifth-highest ERA for any Phillies pitcher since 1901 (minimum 80 innings pitched). The Phillies are 4-11 when Walker starts. It isn’t just Walker, however. The Phillies’ No. 5 starter has been a problem since Spencer Turnbull got hurt in June. The Phillies’ No. 5 starters have a combined 14.14 ERA in their last eight starts. They are 2-6 in those games. Those losses could be the difference between having home-field advantage through the NLCS and playing Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium, if both teams get that far.Jim and Todd also talk about the Phillies’ offense. It’s struck out 44 times in the past three games.Get unique throwback Phillies tees, hats & sweatshirts from local artists at their shops in Center City, Wayne & West Chester and at https://shibevintagesports.com/.You can watch this episode and others on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 64Cy for Wheeler? Soto? Cheeseburgers!
Zack Wheeler pitched like the NL Cy Young in Tuesday night’s victory over the Brewers. The Phillies can clinch a postseason berth with a win Wednesday night in Milwaukee. They can clinch their first NL East title since 2011 as early as Thursday in New York.Has Wheeler closed the gap on Braves left-hander Chris Sale, who is perceived as the front runner? We answered your questions, too! What are the chances of Juan Soto signing with the Phillies?Should the Phillies carry 12 of 13 pitchers in the postseason? If they carry an extra-bench bat, who should it be?Should the Phillies be concerned about Ranger Suárez heading into the postseason? It’s National Cheeseburger Day, so we talked local burgers, too.Try Huel with 15% OFF today using code FOUL at https://my.huel.com/foulterritorysept24. Ep 63Yo, Buddy, Phillies' Magic Number Is 5
The Phillies had a huge week at home. They swept the Rays, then won two of three against the Mets, who were the hottest team in baseball. The Phils seem to be peaking at the right time. And everybody is contributing, too. Cristopher Sánchez continues to pitch incredibly well, especially at home. Should he be the Phillies’ No. 2 starter in the NLDS, NLCS and World Series, should they get that far and should they have home-field advantage? Reserves Kody Clemens, Cal Stevenson, Buddy Kennedy, Weston Wilson and Aramis Garcia each had big moments during the homestand.Oh, can’t forget that Bryce Harper homered twice on Saturday night, snapping the second-longest homerless drought of his career.Use promo code FOUL at https://www.Navage.com/FOUL to order a Navage starter pack and you’ll get a cleaning kit as a FREE gift with your order!Get unique throwback Phillies tees, hats & sweatshirts from local artists at their shops in Center City, Wayne & West Chester and at https://shibevintagesports.com/.You can watch this episode and others on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePhilliesShowKeep up with the show here:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thephilliesshow/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thephilliesshowX: https://twitter.com/thephilliesshowThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thephilliesshowFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559185425483The Phillies Show is part of the Foul Territory Network. Ep 60Kyle Schwarber on Phillies struggles helping postseason push
Kyle Schwarber has provided Phillies fans many memorable moments since he signed a four-year contract in March 2022. It was a fantastic coincidence then that he joined “The Phillies Show” during a road trip through Toronto and Miami. Schwarber hit three home runs in a big comeback win on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He hit a leadoff homer in Wednesday’s victory against the Blue Jays, tying Alfonso Soriano for the most leadoff homers in a season in MLB history with 13. Schwarber offered insight about his personal successes and failures as a player, what makes this Phillies team so close, why the team’s midseason struggles could help them in the postseason and how growing up in a household of first responders shaped him as a person. He also discussed his important work with Schwarber’s Neighborhood Heroes, which is the foundation he and his wife Paige started in 2017. Its mission is to create “positive experiences, and funding wellness, education and crisis needs for police, fire and military families.” You can donate and learn more about Schwarber’s Neighborhood Heroes here: https://schwarbersneighborhoodheroes.orgLove The Phillies Show? Title: Schwarbombs, Schwarbombs, SchwarbombsKyle Schwarber had a heck of a series in Toronto, hitting three home runs on Tuesday night, including a no-doubt-about-it, game winner in the ninth, and another leadoff homer on Wednesday.Schwarber is must-see TV when he is feeling good at the plate.Bryce Harper hasn’t been feeling great for a few weeks, but he continues to play through elbow and wrist issues. More than a few fans want Rob Thomson to rest Harper, but Harper said it isn’t necessary. Ruben, Jim and Todd are around Harper quite a bit. They offer their take on Harper’s willingness to play through pain.Should he or shouldn’t he?The guys also discuss Seth Johnson’s MLB debut on Sunday. The Phillies got him in the Gregory Soto trade.
