#718 - Brian Ray
#718 - Brian Ray The Brian Ray Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. We’re honored to have you tuning in for an especially magical episode featuring an ultra talent in live and recorded music: Brian Ray. Paul was asked not long ago, who he has interviewed that was “Just plain cool.” Paul thought about it and said, “Hmmm. Coolest, you said?” He was reminded of an in-person interview he recorded with Brian Ray at a Ritz Carlton hotel back in 2005. As you’ll soon hear, Brian Ray is just a cool, laidback kind of guy. Well, he did grow up in Southern California. Now, about Brian Ray… He’s a guitarist, singer, songwriter, recording artist, producer. He’s appeared on some great recordings of artists ranging from Etta James, Paul McCartney, Steve Goodman, Willy DeVille, Stephen Bishop, Smokey Robinson and Shakira, etcetera! He’s also toured with Paul McCartney for the last 20 years playing lead, rhythm and bass guitar. Brian was on tour with Paul McCartney and was kind enough to meet up with Paul. Jeff Pike, Paul’s good buddy recorded the interview as well as some acoustic / vocal performances. At the time of the interview you’re about to hear, Brian Ray was releasing his debut solo album, “Mondo Magneto.” You’ll get to hear a couple of those songs “recorded live.” You’ll probably want to get the record, which you can get on Amazon or Apple Music. #709 - Hugo Duarte
#709 - Hugo Duarte The Hugo Duarte Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour We have an interview from the archives with Hugo Duarte: a singer, songwriter and musician of great talent who has since passed away. This interview was recorded down in Key West, Florida at the Hog's Breath Saloon, and was originally broadcast several years ago. Hugo Duarte had just come out with his album “Don’t Be Fooled By the Hat.” Paul had hoped there would be another interview with Hugo sometime along with some in-studio performances, but that never materialized. Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1955, Hugo resided in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he passed away in 2014. Although Hugo Duarte performed in many places, he was a regular on the Key West music scene, playing some of the most famed venues, both as a solo performer and with his musicians in The Full Sail Band. Hugo Duarte was an exceptional storyteller, he was really one of the best. A lot of his songs were historical in nature. Hugo was a photographer, golfer and Civil War history buff, it’s hard even describing him succinctly. If you ever had the chance to see him live, you never forgot that. This interview was somewhat brief, but it’s our sincere hope that it inspires you to find his albums. Here it is folks, a rare interview with Hugo Duarte. #707 - Dan Johnson & Candy Ashton, Parrothead Studies Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour The Parrothead Studies Interview with Dan Johnson PhD and Candy Ashton PhD is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. So…some of the interviews Paul has done have been a bit unusual…this one is another of those things you never knew existed. The fans of Jimmy Buffett are sometimes called Parrotheads. No doubt some of you listening consider yourself to be one. After hearing there was an Honors class at the University of North Carolina Wilmington called “Parrothead Studies,” Paul wrote the professors a letter asking about it and the entire class called him on the phone. He could hear them all in the background laughing. They invited him to visit. They asked me questions during the class and afterwards Paul got to interview the professors Dan Johnson, PhD & Candy Ashton, PhD. About this unusual class. It was broadcast on the radio and Paul also wrote a short article about the experience, which was published in Jimmy Buffett’s official print periodical, The Coconut Telegraph. So, just a real quick thing here before we play the tape. The Paul Leslie Hour has continued after all of the years and God willing it will continue for years to come, but it does need your help. #706 - Brian Galvin
#706 - Brian Galvin of the KISS Coffeehouse The Brian Galvin Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. This is an interview from the archives that’s fairly atypical, really. Paul was invited to the Grand Opening of the KISS Coffeehouse in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Yes, you heard that right. KISS Coffeehouse, and we mean KISS as in, the rock band. The KISS Coffeehouse was open from 2006 to 2013 and was officially licensed by the band KISS. You should see pictures of the place. So, that day Paul got in his trusty pickup truck and headed to Myrtle Beach with his traveling confederate and dear friend Jeff Pike. They were going to be able to ask and record some questions of Gene Simmons of KISS and Paul Stanley of KISS as well as the Creator of the KISS Coffeehouse, Brian Galvin. You’ll be meeting Brian in just a moment. Really a charming guy. There’s a lot of details to this tale, and maybe Paul will tell us one of these days. Long story short, Paul never got to interview Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Let’s just say that a maniacal, unbalanced individual in an 18-wheeler had something to do with their delay. Paul and his pal Jeff Pike are grateful that they escaped with their lives. The pickup truck got them to Myrtle Beach, but there was some considerable damage. At the end of the night, there was Paul and Jeff: grateful to still have your feet on the ground and breathing air. Upon returning to Atlanta they were able to setup a phone interview with Brian Galvin of the KISS Coffeehouse. We have it for your listening pleasure and for historical research purposes, of course. Real quick, would you be able to help keep The Paul Leslie Hour going? We’ve been going for 18 years now and it’s made possible through the listeners. Just go to http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support We thank you for your support. So…whether you’re a KISS fan, curiosity seeker or dedicated listener, now it’s time to hear this interview. #705 - Jeff Pike
#705 - Jeff Pike The Jeff Pike Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour Hello friends and neighbors, this is The Paul Leslie Hour. When you listen to this show, it makes us happy. When we’re happy, we create more. That’s why it hasn’t stopped after these hundreds of episodes. Thank you! You know who one of the biggest friends of The Paul Leslie Hour is? It’s Georgia-born Jeff Pike. We’ve had several interviews with singer-songwriter, performer and entertainer Jeff Pike... and guess what? We envision a lot more. Jeff Pike is very well known for his incredible ability to perform the work of many great artists and bands, and is a prolific recording artist. In fact, he has two albums coming out over the next couple of years… “Right Where I Am,” which he is recording with Gino Vannelli and “Always” an album consisting of all classic, standard songs. He has released his own independent recordings of his own work, to much acclaim. Talking about his own songs is the aim of this interview Paul Leslie had with his good buddy, Jeff Pike. Hey, just a moment ago we mentioned the listeners of this show. We love our listeners, they keep this whole thing going. If you have a moment, we could use your assistance. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support You’ll know what to do when you get there. We thank you! #704 - Ana Ularu
Episode Notes The Ana Ularu Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. On this episode we’re going to play Paul Leslie’s interview with Ana Ularu. This interview received quite a lot of attention when it originally broadcast. In fact, an excerpt of it appeared on Pro-TV, a national television channel in Romania. You see, Ana Ularu is an actress from Bucharest, Romania. She has appeared in such films as Outbound (2010), Sunt o baba comunista (2013) and Italiencele (2004). She appeared in the film “Serena,” directed by Susanne Bier, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. #703 - St. Somewhere
#703 - St. Somewhere The St. Somewhere Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour Some of you heard Paul’s interview with Matt Hall, a singer who got his fame with the band St. Somewhere. Paul was a great fan of the band, as most certainly many of you are. Before St. Somewhere broke up and after Matt Hall and Aram Takvoryan departed, the band consisted of Quincy Yeates, Kevin Wiley, Trey Sansom and Dave Sansom. They were a great band under that incarnation also. Paul was pleased to interview them in-studio prior to one of their concerts. He was still learning the craft of interviewing and it was not easy and as Paul sometimes remarks, it’s still not easy to interview an entire band. You know, The Paul Leslie Hour is basically a semi-public archive of tons of recorded interviews that we make available to you. It takes work and time, but thanks to you all - it keeps on chuggin’ along. You can help. Just go to http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support We thank everyone who is contributing. #702 - Jim Morris
#702 - Jim Morris The Jim Morris Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. This is an interview from the archives with someone who won the hearts of so many people, who has since passed away. Jim Morris was perhaps the most popular independent singer-songwriter and recording artist making island-inflected music. He was quite a songwriter and his albums are filled with some great stories. To say he was a Jimmy Buffett clone is not at all accurate. Although influenced by Jimmy Buffett, Jim Morris was even more influenced by singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker and much of his songwriting was very lyrical. He was a storyteller first and foremost. This interview Paul did with Jim Morris was recorded in an empty bar in Key West, Florida several years back. He told the story behind several of his popular songs and how he came to be the Jim Morris people traveled very far to see and hear. If this interview increases interest in his great work, our mission is accomplished. #701 - Gene Mitchell and Paul Leslie LandShark Lager Tasting
#701 - Gene Mitchell and Paul Leslie LandShark Lager Tasting Gene Mitchell and Paul Leslie have a LandShark Lager Tasting on The Paul Leslie Hour. Hey and welcome to an episode of The Paul Leslie Hour that’s a bit of an anomaly. Okay? So, this segment was an idea Paul Leslie dreamed up with the smart folks at Margaritaville Brewing Company in Jacksonville, Florida, that’s the Sunshine State. Now, we should note that Margaritaville Brewing Company is a part of Anheuser-Busch out of St. Louis, Missouri. Ya know, Missouri—the Show-Me-State. Anyhow, this tidbit of trivia and two bucks may get you a cup of coffee, maybe a beer in a dive bar. Paul Leslie was the first person in the state of Georgia to drink a Landshark Lager, which is an island-style lager. It’s a beer that you can drink with a lime wedge…or without. We don’t like to tell people what to do. At the time, you couldn’t even get Landshark Lager in Georgia. Well, there’s always a way around everything. The folks who make the beer sent it to Singer-Songwriter Gene Mitchell. Gene Mitchell is a great Florida-based artist in the world of island music. I mean, he’s like the best. He’s so talented and also has a tiki bar at his house. What a guy. Anyhow, the brewers sent a couple of cases of Landshark Lager to Gene Mitchell who in turn sent one case up to Paul. They sampled the beer via telephone which was broadcast over the radio. It was an interstate beer-sampling, which you are about to listen to. Paul was told he was the first person in Georgia to drink one. You know, we mentioned the 2 dollars. The Paul Leslie Hour could use your help, no matter what the amount we are kept going by you the listeners. Simply go to http://www.thepaulleslie.com/support We thank everyone who is contributing. It was the other day, Jeff and Allison stopped by The Paul Leslie Hour world headquarters. The brought a bottle of something and a little lime wedge. #693 - David Krakauer
#693 - David Krakauer The David Krakauer Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. It’s The Paul Leslie Hour! This episode features an interview with clarinetist and recording artist David Krakauer. It is not often an album is so instantly alluring as David Krakauer’s “The Big Picture.” David Krakaeur is a clarinetist extraordinaire and “The Big Picture” is his renditions of 12 songs from major movies throughout the years…and what a collection it is! At the forefront is the clarinet, but what makes this record so great is how innovative Krakauer is at interpreting the songs. Perhaps the most represented are songs from Woody Allen films: “Si Tu Vois Ma Mère” composed by Sidney Bechet which appeared in Midnight in Paris among others. Variety is key here. There’s Krakauer’s cover of “People,” made famous by Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, flawlessly followed by the Sheldon Harnick & Jerry Bock song “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof. All it took was listening to “The Big Picture” once and Paul knew Krakauer was an artist he had to speak to. We hope you enjoy their heart-to-heart interview. Just remember, we need your support.
