BONUS: Cross-Examining Intelligent Design with Dr. Michael Behe
Many people -- including many religious people -- are quick to dismiss the position of intelligent design as nothing more than attempts to smuggle a pseudo-scientific creationism into the public school system. But is this characterization merited? What precisely is Intelligent Design, and, more specifically, what aspects of modern evolutionary theory does Intelligent Design attempt to challenge? Furthermore, what (if any) evidence is there to support these critiques, and what counter arguments have been made against them? Attempting to sift through all the ideological and philosophical fog, Pat is joined by John DeRosa of the Classical Theism podcast to cross-examine Dr. Michael Behe, molecular biologist, and author of Darwin's Black Box, The Edge of Evolution, and Darwin Devolves. Made famous (perhaps, infamous?) for his proposal of "irreducible complexity" Pat and John press Dr. Behe with a series of objections -- some philosophic, others scientific -- to see how well his claims withstand scrutiny from experts who have seriously engaged the subject. Mentioned Resources You can read Dr. Behe's work and responses to critics at DarwinDevolves.com Dr. Behe also gave a recent talk entitled "An empirical argument for Intelligent Design" at the conference of Science and Faith. He also had an exchange at Texas A&M with one of his critics, Dr. Joshua Swamidass. About Dr. Michael Behe Michael J. Behe is Professor of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and a Senior Fellow at Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. Behe's current research involves delineation of design and natural selection in protein structures. In his career he has authored over 40 technical papers and two books, Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution and The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism, which argue that living system at the molecular level are best explained as being the result of deliberate intelligent design. The books have been reviewed by the New York Times, Nature, Philosophy of Science, Christianity Today, and many other periodicals. Darwin's Black Box has sold over 250,000 copies and was internationally reviewed in over one hundred publications. Both National Review and World magazine named it as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century. Behe has presented and debated his work at major universities throughout North America and England. Sunday School: Lydia McGrew on Gospel Reliability, Undesigned Coincidences, and Harmonizing Discrepancies
This one is definitely for all you Bible Geeks! Philosopher and author Lydia McGrew joins The Pat Flynn show to discuss her new book The Mirror or The Mask: Liberating the Gospels from Literary Devices, where Lydia rigorously argues for the case that the authors of the gospels are careful, honest reports who simply "tell it like it is." In other words, that the authors of the gospels were 1) genuinely concerned with reporting the actual truth, and 2) highly successful at doing so. Please enjoy as Lydia presents all the fascinating evidence in support of her "reportage model" -- from undesigned coincidences to unified personalities, and more -- while offering responses to skeptics such as Bart Ehrman. PS - Shortly after I recorded this interview with Lydia, Matt Fradd interviewed Dr. Mike Licona on the historical case for the resurrection. While both Lydia and Licona agree on the resurrection being a real, historical event, they disagree on just *how* reliable the gospels are; disagreements which Lydia contends are not insignificant. For those interested, please watch the Matt Fradd interview, then read Lydia's written response here. He has focused on philosophy and theology throughout his student days and into his academic career, in particular the thought of St Thomas Aquinas. Sunday School: 10 More Questions (and Answers) on Catholicism with Eric Robinson
Continuing from last week, Pat and Eric continuing answer common questions (and objections) to the Catholic faith -- everything from Adam to Eve, Marian dogma, praying to saints, and more -- in response too the recent conversation between Cameron Bertuzzi and Matt Fradd. ... The 10 Questions 1. Biblically speaking, where do we find any evidence of the saint assuming the role of praying for us? Isn't that Christ's role as High Priest? 2. Where did Jesus go between his death on the cross and his resurrection? 3. Adam and Eve, real or metaphor? 4. Are Faith and Reason compatible? 5. How do you reconcile Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," with the Roman Catholic belief that Mary had no sin, not even original sin? 6. If Church Tradition is not good enough evidence, but the Bible is, wouldn't that be a contradiction since the Bible is actually Tradition? 7. Do Catholics put more emphasis on having deceased Popes pray for them rather than the general public? 8. Can you explain "Theotokos"? 9. Why is Mary referred to as the Virgin Mary now? Didn't she have sexual relations with her husband? 10. Is it possible to do the work of Christ without understanding all of this? Can a low body fat percentage satisfy the soul's upward yearning? Or is something missing? On the flip side, how does fitness incorporate into a life of faith? How can being physically active enhance our spiritual life? How does the Catholic view of the body and soul make sense of this? ... What does it mean to say that God is good, or that God is love? Furthermore, can we really know that God loves *us* -- you, me, specifically?! Dr. Gaven Kerr is back on the Pat Flynn show to offer a philosopher exploration of God's goodness and love. Can we know (apart from revelation) that God is wholly good and unconditionally loving?
