Overlap Episode 35: Scott Miller Signature Training Studios

And, so, it's come to this – the day we know you've all been waiting for… You've heard about him almost every week on this podcast – the man, the myth, the legend (in his own mind): Scott Miller. Our hosts Sid and Keith sit down with their "man crush" Scott, who is the owner of Signature Training Studios and co-owner and head coach of RX-SportFit, and you can feel the "bro-mance" throughout the entire show. Miller is originally from Michigan and has a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology, which is where he began his journey in continuing to help people change their lives through living a healthier, better lifestyle. He started in this business by doing personal training at several different gyms, dreaming of the day when he might possibly be able to open his own gym. And with some luck and divine intervention through a story best told by Scott (yeah, you really need to listen and hear him tell it himself … we're not going to tell you here #NoSpoilers), he now has a studio that is growing and getting stronger each and every day – just like his many clients. Prepare yourself to listen to the boys get personal this week, as our own Keith tells his personal story of how Scott literally helped save his life after years of unhealthy living and a heart attack scare (Again, we're not giving you more than that here – just stop reading this and turn on the podcast. You know you want to know. #StillNoSpoilers). Our boys and Scott will guide you through the map of the journey of fitness – the ups, the downs, the pitfalls, the trials, tribulations, and, yes, even the much-hated burpees of it all… with plenty of helpful tips and advice to inspire and spur you to either start your own sojourn of strength or continue onward in your hike of health. Scott isn't just a great fitness coach – he's an amazing life coach and you won't want to miss his clever counsel on factors like finding and creating a great community, nutrition and everything else you want to know. Lace up your running shoes, chalk up your hands and get ready to get pumped up by this week's episode – it's definitely our "One Rep Max" of episodes, so don't miss out. Overlap Episode 34: Blake Stanley

Be blessed by this week's episode of The Overlap Podcast as our hosts, Sid and Keith, sit down with Brother Blake Stanley, Executive Pastor of Operations at 3Circle Church. One of the fastest growing churches in Southwest Alabama, 3 Circle has campuses in Fairhope, Daphne, Mobile and Thomasville - and Blake oversees a choir of duties that include finances, mutisite strategy and leadership development - all topics worth hearing some heavenly advice on even if you aren't a follower or leader of a church flock. Blake's areas of expertise center around creating and implementing simple systems for management that actually work and to do his best to spur new employees into becoming confident leaders. To him, business is simply a matter of stewardship (fitting for a man of the cloth) - placing the people and resources in the direction of the large-picture version of what the organization is or can be. Of course, as we learn from Pastor Blake's sermon on stewardship and strategizing, what your organization is and the vision of what it could be are parts of a lifelong journey. The vision is the final destination and our day-to-day operations in our vocation, be it a church or your business, are the vehicle that will take you to where you want to be. Key components like values and standards will be necessary to help you find the right fit for the passengers (your team of employees) that will join you on this trek. But, don't take our word for it - Pastor Blake's How-To Homily is much better heard from him, not read here. So find a seat in the pew of your choice (back row for you Southern Baptists - we know it's doctrinal) and get ready to hear the good word on generating glad tidings of great joy and growth for you and your business. Let the listeners say "Amen!" (And, we promise, we won't pass the offering plate for this week's episode - but if the Spirit moves you to send a love donation, move with the Spirit!) 3Circle Church RX SPORT FIT CHECKMAT DAPHNE Sexton Lawn & Landscape CONNECT WITH BLAKE Instagram Facebook Website CONNECT WITH THE GUYS Keith Glines Sid Sexton HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE PODCAST? Overlap Episode 32: The 4 Cs of Christian Leadership

This week, our hosts Sid and Keith converse, chat, consider and confer on "The Four Cs of Christian Leadership," a commendable composition of commentary he recently gave to a crowd of local community chiefs, captains and commanders (we promise to stop with the C-starting words now). His chat with them was so good, we knew we needed to have it here, too, for everyone to be able to catch. Sid tells his personal story of recovery and the 4 Cs (calling, competence, confidence and character) he learned along that continued journey and how it relates to business leadership. From his stages of making amends with others and finding his calling to serve them, to developing his competence in areas in which he felt he was less than strong, to gaining confidence is his own abilities enough to be able to begin to lead and train others and now the continued crusade to develop his character - you really won't want to miss this very special episode that can help change your business and your life. Overlap Episode 31: Johnny Barranco

Sid and Keith, our host, have a conversation today with Johnny Barranco. Johnny is CEO/Owner of Barranco and Associates. Johnny grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and went to Auburn University and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business. In 2005 Johnny and his family moved to Fairhope, Alabama. Johnny multiple companies in multiple different roles the most well known being the Lu'Lu's Corporation. (mainly as a CPA and accounting roles). In 2011 Johnny launched Barranco and Associates. The conversation with Johnny today revolves around the basics of accounting and working with an accountant. The biggest mistakes that Johnny see's that business leaders make when dealing with their accountant is for one not consulting their accountant enough. What Johnny says is the reason for this lack of communication is business leaders have a lack of understanding of what an accountant is and does. The guys and Johnny discuss that a CPA is not just someone who does your taxes but is someone who is there to support you as a business leader and be there throughout the year. The next largest mistake that Johnny points out is that especially small business owners intermingle personal and business expenses. When you try to intermingle the two trying to keep taxes down will actually cost you more overall in the long run. The overall worth of your business is brought down by intermingling personal and business because it is near impossible to know which is which. Johnny gives pointers on how to avoid this while also not paying more taxes than you need. There are so many more valuable topics on todays episode about how to handle your businesses money. Overlap Episode 30: Shifting with the Seasons

Sid and Keith, our host, in this episode how they shift from the summer into the fall season. The guys discuss how can we take advantage of the new season. For most business owners (or at least for our host) is that this changing of seasons is one that things slow down and Sid and Keith take this fall season to begin to set sights on the upcoming year and make whatever tweaks necessary to be better next year. These seasons are vital for a successful business therefore, if fall is not your slow down season find your slow down season so you can take some time to dream and tweak your business so you can get better. The saying "practice makes perfect" is a lie. Practice alone does not make you better, experience alone does not make you better. Evaluated experience makes you better. So you need these season of evaluation in order to grow as a business. Ways that you can evaluate your experience is having intentional conversations with your employees. Asking them what they need to be more successful, do they need any equipment to be upgraded/replaced, are there any other resources that they need? Conversations like these can be eye openers for you to see what your employees actual needs are and you aren't left guessing or making assumptions about what they need because your assumptions are probably wrong anyways. The next way that you can evaluate your experience is sending out surveys to your customers and employees. By doing this you get to see what both the inside of you company is feeling and what those you are serving are thinking as well. This helps you see what changes you might need to make and what you are doing well. "when seasons change your message changes" You have to know the flow of your business and throughout the year you have to gain the awareness of what to be communicate to your employees and customers. This is why evaluating is important, because the knowledge you gain through evaluating helps you find what message you need to be communicating during specific times of the year. During the evaluating time you will discover problems and it is vital not to allow those issues to fester. Even during the more fast paced times right when you discover a problem you cannot allow the issue to fester. The more time you allow that problem to fester the more that issue becomes. Small things will become big things the more time you allow the issue to sit unaddressed. All of that is just the beginning of learning how to shift with the season to take advantage of the new season and finish your year strong. You do not want to miss this episode. Overlap Episode 29: Brad Summersell

Brad is the CEO of a company that his father bought thirty years ago. The company was started by two brothers as a potato chip distributing company that also sold Bic and Lindy pen displays. Overtime the company formed into an office supplies distribution company that expanded along the gulf coast. In 1978 Brad's father bought the company. In the 1990 Office Depot, Staples, and others began to rise and small independent office supplies companies (which were the customers of Brad's father) were getting crushed. Therefore, as Brad graduated from Auburn with a marketing degree. Brad and his father geared the company more towards education/school supplies distribution. Brad started with the company immediately out of college and helped his father recreate their company into an education/school supplies distribution company. After the company got off the ground in the education/school supplies market. Brad had his heart to do other things and prepared to leave his fathers company to go backpack in Europe. However, Brad had lunch with one of his fathers friends whom Brad respected and talked Brad out of leaving the company and made Brad realize the opportunity Brad had at his father's company. In 1993 Brad's father's company was a distributer to small independent school supplies stores. Today the entire company which is called Educators Resource is all e-commerce. This episode is all about how to keep up with our ever changing world to stay relevant and how to successfully handoff your company to the next generation. As we talk about a lot on this podcast ego is the enemy. This is definitely the case in staying relevant and in successions. Family owned businesses fail most of the time due to just keeping ownership in the family due to ego when that family member was not capable to succeed in their role. Brad talks about how to overcome the obstacle of succession and how to tell if your children and other family members can actually make a career of working in your business. Brad also talks about how to effectively work with your family members and knowing yourselves well enough to confront the brutal facts and make whatever decisions are best not what makes someone happy. Which if you are not in a family business this will also apply to you. In any business you must be selfless for things to be successful. That is just the beginning of the things that are talked about in this episode. Brad shares wisdom that could be 5 episodes that are all packed into this hour and ten minutes.that you do not want to miss out on. Episode 28: Rick Miller: The Power of Coaching

Sid Sexton and Keith Glines, our host, have a conversation with Rick Miller. Rick Miller is from Mobile, Alabama and attended college at Alabama to get a degree in accounting. After college moved to New York City to work for a large accounting firm. During Rick's time in New York a friend encouraged Rick to apply to Harvard Business School then Rick got accepted. After graduating Harvard Rick moves out west gets married to his wife. As Rick and his wife started their family they decided to move back to Alabama. After getting settled in Fairhope, Alabama Rick began to consult small business. Consulting businesses morphed into being a business coach. Why Rick decide to be a business coach because even the most successful people in their field have a coach. Tom Brady has a coach, Serena Williams has a coach, most successful business leaders have a coach. Therefore, Rick wanted to help leaders be the best they can be by being their coach. Rick answers the question that most of us have when we hear of business coaches—why do I need one? Accountability. A coach is someone who will show up on a consistent basis and they know they will be held accountable for the results. Accessibility A coach gives you a broader perspective. A coach is outside the business but is knowledgable enough about your organization they can give specific input that fits your situation. Analysis We all have blindspots and a coach can help you identify those and help you through those blindspots. "Balance is more important than speed." Rick shares his philosophy of living a life of the Overlap (a balanced life). Where not only one area of your life is succeeding but all areas of your life can succeed and it begins with four boxes. The boxes are: Work, Family, Community, Spiritual. When you put effort into all four boxes you live a balanced life. A life that is what this podcast desires you to live. You will never consistently stay balance but if you have this framework you will do better than you ever could without living with this framework. That is just the beginning of this episode that is jam packed with wisdom that will improve your life as a whole. This episode really shows that we are not just a podcast to improve your business but a podcast to improve your life. Episode 26: The Great Game of Business: The Only Sensible Way to Run a Company

Sid Sexton and Keith Glines in this episode talk about the book "The Great Game of Business" We all have "gameified" other areas in life. For example, have you ever created a game in order to get your kids to do something like, clean their room, potty train, or do their homework? Why did you do that? Because kids like to win. Well guess what, adults like to win too. Every human being on planet earth likes to win. Therefore, we need to create a scoreboard for our business so our teams can know if they are winning or losing. When people know what winning and losing look like they have an internal drive to be winners. "People who run companies know that they are only two critical factors in business. The first is to make money and the other is to generate cash....everything else is a means to that end." What the guys dig into from Great Game of Business is that all about starts with how you treat people. If people do not like the team they are on then they will quit the team. One of the major business myths that is ingrained deeply in business culture that the guys talk about is "Nice guys finish last" meaning business leaders think they have to be jerks to succeed when in reality it's the exact opposite. Keith says, "Some of the best business people I know are the nicest people." Then Sid goes onto to say later in the episode, "When you treat people badly you lose power." The guys dig into how to treat your employees and how to pull the greatness out of them. Because your company is only as great as your employees. "People perform to the bar you (the leader) set for them--not the bar they set for themselves…Set bars for people that stretches them to who you know they can be not what they think they are." Other things the guys talk about are: educating your employees, how to create a bonus structure and more. You do not want to miss this episode! Episode 25: Q&A with Keith and Sid

Sid and Keith, in this episode, answer questions from listeners like you. The first thing the guys discuss is how to scale your business effectively. When to add more people to the team? When to add more infrastructure? What to do that you get the most return on investment? The second thing the guys discuss is when they have failed and how they overcame those failures. The follow-up to this question is what they have learned from others' failures. They discuss failures that everyone has done at one time or another. Things like; hiring friends and not giving clear expectations, putting all your eggs in one basket, trusting too much (not following up), buying too much equipment, treatment of people, and creating systems. Another thing the guys discuss is how to keep team morale up through hardships. How to launch a business with no money saved up, overcoming adversity, QUOTES/INSIGHTS FROM THE EPISODE: If your why is important enough, you will do whatever it takes to get you through the terrible times. To launch a business, you need to think about the cheapest way to enter the desired market. People undervalue side work and hustle; getting loans do not work to launch your business. Overcoming adversity is a mindset. There is no tip, tricks or hacks. Pressure is a privilege. Ego is the enemy. To dive deeper into these concepts and more, listen to today's episode!
