Energy Audit #129

Not gonna lie, when the writing staff saw the phrase "energy audit" pop up in the podcast this week, we became very concerned that The Overlap Podcast might now be some sort of digital media arm of the Church of Scientology and that our boys Sid and Keith were now being held on some ocean liner being tested for thetans (the remnants of immortal spiritual beings that have some sort of supernatural residue in humans … or something) and hanging out with John Travolta and Tom Cruise. We are pleased to report back this is not the case, though we do feel compelled to say that we do believe Shelly Miscavige is obviously still alive and has been on one of the Sea Org cruises for … like 17 years now and just doesn't like land and has developed agoraphobia … totally plausible. So, instead of indulging in L. Ron Hubbard's tax dodge … er … religion, we're taking a deep dive into the exciting enclave of energy - how we generate it, how we expend it, how we best distribute it and how Reddy Kilowatt, the mascot designed in 1926 for Alabama Power, might be the most terrifying company mascot of all time (note: we will do three of those things in the podcast this week; one of them is food for thought we will explore further in the future unless that demon power bug murders us in our dreams Freddy Kreuger style). Aligning your energy with your core values, revitalizing your routine, finding ways to develop lucid dreaming to avoid ancient power company mascots trying to unalive you in your sleep … great advice for your everyday life that's practical, applicable and necessary to avoid an untimely end for you and your business. Tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast … and remember, Shelly Miscavige is definitely still alive. Definitely. We would never say anything to the contrary. Ever. So leave us be, David.

Begin with the End In Mind #128

Do you remember back in the late 20th century when people would go on vacations to exotic locales like Paris, London, Rome and Des Moines, Iowa, and would make sure to take hundreds or even thousands of photos of said vacations? Do you recall that they would take the plethora of photos and have them turned into slides that could be inserted into a projector and displayed on a large surface so that all of their family and friends that didn't go on the exotic vacation to Des Moines could now see every moment and have it painstakingly narrated by those people who did go? Maybe your brain has blocked that painful, anxiety inducing experience from your memory, your subconscious protecting you from the trauma you experienced therein. But Writing Staff of the Overlap Podcast, you say, what does this have to do with this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast? And we reply - oh, we mention that for no reason whatsoever, completely random and errant thought, sorry to bother … oh, and Keith just got back from a conference out in the Mountain West. So, yeah, no correlation at all… Yes, in this week's episode, our boys Sid and Keith will be diving and delving into the topic of "Beginning With the End in Mind," something that Keith gleaned from the aforementioned conference … or it could possibly be one of them found that guide to the afterlife book from the movie "Beetlejuice," because that definitely sounds like the title of that tome… So, tune in this week to find out whether the Overlap Podcast is about something Keith learned at a conference or if it's a spooky show about exploring beyond the veil of death. Either way, we're certain you'll enjoy the show.

The Incentive Illusion - Rethinking Motivation in the Workplace #126

Throughout time immortal, mankind has asked itself a question that echoes through the millenia still today - what compels us to do, to be, to strive and to move forward? Is it evolutionary, baked into our very DNA over eon after eon of continued growth and development? Is it learned behavior, some sort of cosmic experiment conducted by the gods or the powers that be to propel our collective narratives forward? Are we overthinking this particular topic far more than we ought? Undoubtedly so, but we move forward boldly, motivated by the idea that we might actually be freed from the writer's room if we please our overlords … err… hosts in so doing. In this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith will make moves to motivate us listeners on rethinking the very idea of motivation in the business world altogether, piercing the veil of the "Incentive Illusion." Amusing anecdotes, appreciated advice and banal banter - all will be encountered herein, so tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast. Speaking of incentive - if we get the listener rate up, they might actually feed the writers for once, so, please, for the love of all that is holy, listen this week… Resources Mentioned: Harvard Business Review Alfie Kohn

Leadership's Ripple Effect #125

Are you familiar with the Rube Goldberg Machine? Probably not, but run with us here … it's an overly complicated machine that requires a sure-fire plethora of chain-reaction events in order to complete a usually simple or mundane task. Example: a self-operating napkin that works by lifting a spoon, which moves a handle that throws a cracker past a toucan. The toucan jumps for the cracker, tilting its perch which upsets seeds into a pail that, due to the weight of the seeds, pulls a cord that ignites a lighter next to the fuse of a skyrocket with a sickle attached to it. When the rocket takes off, the sickle cuts a string, freeing a clock pendulum with a napkin attached to wipe the user's chin. What does any of this have to do with this week's episode? Answer: yeah, we don't know either but pretend we came up with some meaningful connection here … something that said something like "Like the spoon, when leadership lifts up employees, a good series of events happens" or some such nonsense. So, our boys Sid and Keith will be taking a look at the ripple effect that true leadership has within your life - be it business, home, faith, church softball league … whatever … leadership has a comprehensive impact on how and what you do throughout your life's many compartments. Looking forward to amazing anecdotes, interesting insights and colorful commentary as our boys try to help lead you to a better tomorrow. Tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast.

Faith: Core Value 1 #124

Admit it - while this year's new episodes have been amazing, informative and full of edu-tainment, there is something you've been yearning for, something that this podcast has time and again brought to you that you've just come to rely on it - it is your business Gibraltar monkey, that ever-constant thing that will always be there for you and make you feel safe, comfy and warm, a Linus blanket for your entrepreneurial inner child. So, it should be no great surprise this week that our topic is (drum roll … drum roll … drum roll … cymbal crash) EOS is back, back, back, back, back, back again baby. And this time, our boys Sid and Keith aren't just bringing EOS with them; they are bringing a completely different business acronym that we're sure you're going to love just as much as you do EOS … or maybe not quite as much, but definitely like the tier below EOS because we know with y'all, your relationship with EOS is both real and deep. This new device that is vital for your everyday life - the VTO (Vision Traction Organizer). What does it do? Things! How does it work? Well! Did you listen to the episode at all before you wrote these notes? Nope! But, it doesn't really matter because we know that you are already so hooked on what VTO will do for you that you stopped reading these notes a paragraph ago when you saw EOS was back, so we know we can write pretty much total nonsense here and still get paid for the week. So, if you're still reading, go listen to this week's episode so that we don't lose our dental plan. It's a solid dental plan and we've got some Brits on the writing staff…

Passivity Has A Price #123

What do Forrest Gump, Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, Captain Marvel and Karl Childers of "Sling Blade" have in common? Answer: something that should best be avoided in life and in characteristics of movie protagonists - passivity. Passivity will always be remembered by those in the know as something to be avoided (And to further prove that passivity leads to problems, the reason that last sentence felt weird to read? Yep … written in the passive voice.) On this episode of the Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith probe into the price of passivity with the purview of the pecuniary pursuits in which they participate - presenting practical plans and policies to police and purge that passivity as perfectly as possible. Missed opportunities, financial losses and diminished reputation are only a few side effects of choosing to live the passive life, and our boys will have anecdotal evidence that being proactive is the preferred philosophy to produce positive effects for you and your business.= So, get out of the gutter of passivity and press onward and upward with this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast.

You Already Messed Up Your New Years Resolution #122

In keeping with the theme of this week's episode, the writing staff had a New Year's Resolution they were going to be better about trying to finish these damn podcast notes well before they were due. And, yet, here we are barely into February writing these things on deadline in the wee hours of the morning because we're horrible garbage people who will never change. But… you, dear listeners, heed our warning from the Village of the Damned so that you do not find yourself weeping and gnashing in this pitfall with us. Thankfully, you've got our boys Sid and Keith on this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast to take a deep dive into the why, how and where do we go from here of our likely lapsing or lapsed New Year's resolutions. Don't have the discipline? We'll talk about it. Won't be able to find the will? We'll work with you. Can't be bothered to even tune in to learn? We … well, you really have to help yourself at some point - we aren't your damn nanny or anything. Accountability, Goal Writing, SMART resolutions … yeah, we got 'em all, so come get your head right and your 2024 season back on track early with this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast.

The Cost of Leadership #121

In 1878, noted British comic opera legends W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan used their pens to create the timeless operetta "HMS Pinafore," a work with numerous songs that have stood the test of time and are still beloved by … British people, Aaron Sorkin fans, Anglophiles and Victorian era time travelers stuck in our modern era. Sir Joseph's song in Pinafore gives us a great jumping off point for our thesis this week, as he sings about his ascension from from "office boy at an attorney's firm" to "Ruler of the Queen's Navy," an odd career arch given that he has never been to sea before nor ever been on a ship of any kind, though he finds himself cast upon the most difficult ship of them all to navigate - the LeaderShip. (Yeah, we know, roundabout way to get to the metaphor … the writing staff is going through it this week, so … show grace, people). This week, our boys Sid and Keith will touch on a seldom-approached topic of leadership - the costs therein. Examining intentions, working within opportunities given, understanding reality versus unreality … well, let us just say that with this week's episode, you'll certainly be in a better place to govern your Leadership than the aforementioned late 1800s era fictional First Lord of the Admiralty. So, tune in and turn up this week's episode of The Overlap Podcast - you don't want to miss this voyage.

Right Thing #120

On this week's Overlap Podcast, you lucky listeners get to be on the cutting edge of the birth of a bouncing baby business adage, one that will grow over time to join the ranks of the top-tier GOAT adages that we have all come to know, expect and love like "Think outside the box," "shift the paradigm," "Teamwork makes the dream work," and even "My door is always open" … you heard it here first folks, the next great business adage is going to be "Never ruin an opportunity to be helpful." Our boys Sid and Keith will define, dissect and discuss the meaning, evolution and application of this new phrase amongst phrases and show you why this new adage is one that you do actually need to incorporate into your day-to-day business life. (And while we are here, stop saying "synergy" … and "guesstimate" … out here looking clown shoes with your nonsense babble words). See, we just found a way to not ruin an opportunity to be helpful to y'all - so return the favor by checking out this week's episode.

Who Not How #119

Talent Maps. Impact Filters. Culture as a Guardrail. With phrases like these in store for this week's episode, a set of scenarios could currently exist - renegade influencers have hijacked the podcast and turned it into a makeup tutorial, our boys have somehow managed to conjure up the ghost of Canadian philosopher and media theorist Marshall McLuhan for a rousing conversation, or we are getting a deep dive into the terrific tome "Who Not How" by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. Which one is it? We'll never tell… Except it's obviously the third one, as fun as watching the ghost of Marshall McLuhan tell Keith that he "knows nothing of my work" would be … maybe next month. But this week, our boys Sid and Keith give you the tools of the trade that will allow you to do all of the -ations that you and your business truly need: motivation, visualization, innovation, emphasization, idealization and culturification… we think that last one is actually a word… But, Writing Staff, what about that bit about culture and guardrails you mentioned at the beginning? Well, dear, dear, listeners… you ought to know by now that the only way you'll get that explained is to tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast.

Attitude of Gratitude #118

If the writing staff is allowed to cite previous show notes as precedent and therefore indisputable, bedrock fact … and we believe we are … then we feel comfortable once again bringing you relevant words from the Guardian Angel of this podcast, the Patron Saint of Parrotheads and Knight of the Realm Sir James Buffett - "Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes/nothing remains quite the same." So wise, so succinct, so true … but Sir James doesn't give us much guidance as to what sort of attitudinal change we might expect. Thank the gods our boys Sid and Keith are here with this week's Overlap Podcast to help guide us along that sainted path, like two vaguely disheveled John the Baptists - it's all about the Attitude of Gratitude. Our boys will give us anecdotal answers, radical reflections, factual feelings, perspicacious perspectives and life-changing lessons to start 2024 off in the best possible way. So, forget your troubles, c'mon, get happy and tune in to this week's Overlap Podcast … and try not to realize that we went a hard Judy Garland turn there with that last reference. We know it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the conceit here, but Sid and Keith keep us locked in this basement each week until we finish writing and we've been here without food and water for 2.5 days so delirium and dysentery have already hit us. Send help, for the love of all that is holy… wait, they'll see this… it's been nice knowing you, listeners… (Starts playing "Nearer My God to Thee" on the cello)

Leadership Lessons From Napoleon w/ Chris Bell

Dear listeners, as 2023 comes to a close, we here at the Overlap Podcast ask ourselves a very simple question that really brings everything into focus, a question so purely essential that we can't believe it has taken us this long to get here to bring this vital information to your every day life, words that will change every facet of your life down to the molecular level - "Hmmm, what would Napoleon Bonaparte do if he was here?" (Sounds of thousands of minds being blown at the same time across the Overlap listening universe) If the man can inspire a ragtag group of Swedish singers to lay down some feel-good disco beats and truly iconic lyrics about an 1815 battle in Belgium that the man took part in and turn it into a defiant win in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and then conquer the world … just saying, there has to be wisdom there for us to use. And to help guide us through avoiding and escaping from the Elbas of the soul, who better to sit along our boys Sid and Keith than a true GOAT of history - yes, boys and girls, it's the Esoteric Cleric, the Abbot of Antecedents, the History Teacher Preacher himself - Pastor Chris Bell of 3 Circle Church. And since he's the current Heavyweight World Champion of History (he won the belt in a cage match fight with Jesse "The Mind" Ventura and the late William "The Biographer" Manchester back in '09 at Wrestlemania), his insights will be applicable and understandable - something that Keith's words are seldom able to reach. So, why would you ever refuse? Much like Keith, that history book on the shelf is always repeating itself - so tune in and turn up this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast because you couldn't escape if you wanted to, so come on and finally face your Waterloo … woah woah woah woah. 10x is Easier than 2x by Dan Sullivan & Dr. Benjamin Hardy #116

Admittedly, the writer's room was initially paralyzed with fear when we saw the title and topic of this week's episode, as any combination of numbers and the letter X immediately triggers algebraic and geometric PTSD from years of math classes we were present for but had difficulty fully understanding. But once CCR's "Fortunate Son" stopped playing in our heads and the internal red strobe lights stopped flickering, we were able to understand that most people will find this week's Overlap Podcast to be one that is enlightening and empowering. This week, our boys Sid and Keith take a deep dive into Dan Sullivan's seminal text "10x is Easier than 2x," which is sentiment true for everything except for the manufacturing of plus-size clothing and garments, as it is indeed more difficult to construct a 10-XL item than a 2-XL one. So, we're sorry to the haberdashers listening this week - this may not be the best episode for you. For you non-clothiers still reading, what Sullivan is asking us to aim for is the audacious - to propose the idea that shooting for the stars with a 10X growth mindset is actually easier and often more attainable than simply shooting for 2x growth. Our boys will give you personal anecdotes and examples for how the 10x mindset has been a godsend to their business lives so dare to dream and make a moonshot plan for you and your business as we head into this new year filled with endless possibilities. So, get ready to intensify your intentions with greater integers by tuning in to this week's Overlap Podcast … and to our garment industry listeners … keep calm and carry on … cutting? Mastering the Art of Planning with the Plan or Get Slaughtered Method #115

The writing staff here at the Overlap Podcast got excited this week when saw the words "Mastering the Art Of" in the show summary because we assumed it was some sort of bizarro tribute to the late, great Julia Child and we had visions of Keith comically slicing off a few fingers while trying to demonstrate how to properly gratinee an onion. And while the writer's room is sad that isn't the case (though, logically, we should have known that a business podcast probably wouldn't pivot to provincial French cooking … especially for a largely audio podcast), you dear listeners will be treated to a much more relevant and necessary Art to Master - Planning - using the terrific teachings of Keith Cunningham's "Plan or Get Slaughtered" method (and don't judge him because he shares a name with our Keith … he's the good, smart Keith). Risk assessment. Meticulous planning. Adaptive Strategies. EOS. (We assume that last one since they always somehow shoehorn it into every episode). All will be discussed, dissected and disseminated by our boys Sid and Keith as they take their talk from the rhetorical to the actual. And an added bonus for this week … well, possibly a minus … you be the judge … you'll be able to see our boys do this week's episode via video recording (on YouTube only), broadcast in glorious Technicolor and Stereophonic sound. So, if you want to know what Keith and Sid actually look like (answer: Dollar Tree brand Kris Kristofferson and a thinner, balder Luciano Pavarotti), here's your chance. So, bon appetit for this week's Overlap Podcast … and we warned you about the video, so we aren't liable for that now… New Video version of our podcast on Youtube! Calculation of Culture with Rick Miller #114

We begin this week with no funny fanfare or comedic cuteness because this week's special guest deserves nothing but our utmost respect and your undivided attention, as the Best Friend of the Pod and OG Sponsor Rick Miller returns once again to share his wisdom and knowledge with our boys Sid and Keith and with all you lucky listeners. Rick is bringing the fire this week, as he discusses with our boys how to be able to cultivate a culture that both allows for profits to propagate while still enabling an enduring environment for ethics to excel. And when push comes to shove and you have to choose between the moral good and the monetary good, Rick will help us stay on the sunny side of the moral good, because what does it profit a man if he gains the world but loses his soul and his morals? Yes, this week's Overlap Podcast is going to be one you won't want to miss, so come on and hear Mr. Miller's magnificent message - brought to you by … well, him. And, Rick, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your early and constant support. The writing staff here at Overlap salutes you, sir.

Game Plan For Setting Expectations with Chris May

Stop us if you've heard this one - A life insurance agent was meeting with his client about the policy coverage for her husband. The agent asks if she knew the present value of her husband's policy and she didn't understand what he meant. To explain, the agent says "What would you get if your husband dies?" The wife thinks for a moment and then replies, "Probably a poodle, I guess." (Bah dum tiss) Why are we starting with a hokey opening joke about insurance straight out of the Shecky Green era Borscht Belt school of comedy? Because the writing staff here doesn't know bupkis about how to combine football and insurance into a working simile or metaphor to honor this week's special guest star Chris May, the former USA football great and current Insurance Aficionado. In this week's episode of The Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith sit down and do a deep dive into the Art of Setting Expectations (something our boys clearly didn't do with the writing staff if they thought we knew anything about football … other than Dick Butkus. And we really only know that because it's hilarious.) Chris will take our boys through an ideal world with clearly set expectations that have basis in real-world on-the-ground data and facts and help them strategize ways to take those expectations from concept to concrete reality. So, huddle up and hear the plays being called during this week's Overlap Podcast - we can assure you that it'll be a definite slam dunk … er, wrong sports ball … hole in … nope, not that one either … grand slam … nope, that's Denny's … … … … … insert sports ball reference of choice. Why Every Business Needs An Integrator with Forrest Derr #112

What do you know about the state of Delaware? That it was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and join the United States? That it only has three counties? That the state has more corporate entities than it does people? Why are we obsessing on Delaware? Easy answer - because this week's guest on the Overlap Podcast is the best export from that state since DuPont Chemical, Judge Reinhold, Valerie Bertinelli and President Joe Biden - it's the man, the myth, the legend, the Ingenious Integrator behind the operations of Sexton Lawn and Landscape - Forrest Derr. Yes, join our boys Sid and Keith as they have an in-depth and entertaining conversation with the Emirate of EOS Integration, as they start with his humble beginnings as a shelf stocker at a grocery store in the Blue Hen State to his incredible EOS mastery now. (We stan EOS in this house and if you don't, well … you probably need to find another podcast to listen to stat because it comes up a lot here … like way more than you would think it would given normal parameters). So, buckle down and bring on this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast, for more EOS integration, determination and … other -ation word to complete the Rule of Three … because we can't get enough of that wonderful stuff. Parenting in Management #111

Danny Tanner. Heathcliff Huxtable. Jason Seaver. Edna Garrett. Harriet Winslow. What do all of these beloved TV characters have in common? Why, the topic of this week's Overlap Podcast, of course… Without the colorful sweaters, zany plotlines, Stamoses and Alan Thicke-penned theme tunes to prop them up like the aforementioned characters, our boys Sid and Keith will use this week's episode to explore the parallels between running your business and parenting your families - because your work family and your real family have more similarities than you might find at first glance … and hopefully you aren't having to potty train any of your employees… You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have … this week's Overlap Podcast.

What Are You Optimizing For? #110

Other than being a cracker-jack Scrabble word that utilizes some high-point tiles and stretches across some valuable board territory (Triple Word Score, baby), the word "optimization" is tough to deal with, define, understand or turn into a jokey, pop-culture laden opening paragraph for podcast notes, per our writing staff's usual schtick here at The Overlap Podcast… especially when all the movies and TV shows with "optimization" listed as a subject are all either educational economics films, one episode of The Big Bang Theory and an upcoming documentary about former US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara (and nobody can make McNamara funny … Kissinger, sure. Al Haig, of course. But McNamara … hard pass). So, as you may have surmised from the writing staff's previous winding rant of a paragraph, this week our boys Sid and Keith will opine on optimization, in all its many facets, forms and functions - and it's not just for business any more, listeners. Yes, our brand new Optimal Optimization Outline can do just about anything you want it to do - align your short and long-term goals, build business initiatives, prioritize your personal life, enliven your endeavors, make Julienne fries, and create up-to-date odds for who becomes the first Space Pope (we're betting $5 on a thawed-out, re-alived Ted Williams at 27:1). Well, it'll do some of those things… probably… we hope. But, there's only one way to find out, so tune in to this week's Overlap Podcast to see what Optimization can really do for you. Make Your Majors Major and your Minors Minor #109

Admittedly, the writing staff was tempted to go a lot of different ways for the intro to this week's episode, potentially riffing on former British Prime Minister and Thatcher successor John Major, the Charlie Sheen helmed baseball comedy "Major League," an iconic song from Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance in double-timed tempo or a literary analysis of Cole Porter's showtune standard "Everytime We Say Goodbye." In the end, we decided that due to a lack of consensus we would embark upon none of those nonsensical journeys and delve straight into this week's episode - unlike us, we know, but "how strange the change from major to minor," right? Our boys Sid and Keith will do a deep dive into the best ways to optimize your opportunities, boost your business and maximize your money by helping you understand and unravel the finite differences between major and minor opportunities, which is more difficult than it may seem upon first glance. Oftentimes, a minor opportunity may appear in a major's garb; likewise, a major get for your business may not seem to be so upon first glance, hence the need for constant vigilance on your part, dear listeners. Our boys will draw from personal experiences they've had in their own business careers - the dizzying highs, terrifying lows and plateaus of mundanity that abound throughout. So, no matter if you're selling cars, fixing air conditioners or composing timeless Broadway lyrical standards, you'll be able to walk away from this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast knowing to be able to tell the difference between what could be a barnburner for your business from what … would just be something that would burn down a barn … in the bad way … Mrs. O'Leary's cow and the lantern kind of bad … just ask someone from Chicago to explain…

Brad Israel: Overcoming Adversity #108

While the world of business and commerce likes to borrow phrases from and encourage references to the realm of war and battle when talking about itself, the stakes differ wildly between those two worlds, right? As much as you might want to call an upcoming board of directors meeting a long-awaited battle and as bad as it might possibly go, it's still not going to be the Somme or Gallipoli (Though Keith's continued campaign of battles against adult Illiteracy are somewhat equally painful to watch). While the … Overlap … between the two worlds may not be as much as expected, this week's episode will be one to bookmark and come back to again and again, as Army veteran Brad Israel shares his military experiences with our boys Sid and Keith and talks through the differences between military and civilian leadership, surviving truly life and death situations and the stress therein, and the development of skills like trust, communication and adaptability that every single one of us can engage with and enliven our own lives. So, grab your little kit, show your grit and do your bit … by tuning in to this week's Overlap podcast. https://warrior360.co/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bradisrael/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/warrior360/

Why Enneagram Matters with Kerry Flowers #107

This is normally where the writing staff tries to be cute and make some sort of weird pop culture reference that vaguely ties into the weekly subject for that podcast episode, but this week, honestly … the writing staff doesn't know enough about Enneagrams to be able to do the usual spiel and spent thirty minutes kicking around ideas about telegrams, Bananagrams, Teddy Grahams … clearly, wouldn't have been worthy of introducing a truly noteworthy episode of the Overlap Podcast. This week, our boys Sid and Keith are joined by Enneagram Expert Kerry Flowers to learn how to utilize your inherent Enneagram power in order to bolster your business and enliven your leadership skills. Again, no jokes to be made here - this episode is one that really should be a standout one that you'll probably return to again and again. So, enjoy unraveling the Enneagram Enigma in this week's episode … and join the writing staff in praying that the boys will do another EOS episode or clip show next week so we can get back to doing what we do best - snarky commentary about Keith.

Transitioning People out #106

"It's sad to think we're not gonna make it and it's gotten to the point where we just can't fake it. For some ungodly reason, we just won't let it die because … neither one of us wants to be the first to say goodbye." Lyrics just as true now as they were when Gladys Knight and the Pips released them to the world on Boxing Day in 1972. But, Overlap Podcast Writing Staff, what does this random piece of Gladys Knight apocrypha have to do with anything? Ah, dear listeners, it contains everything we cover on this week's episode - how to be the first to say goodbye and start transitioning people out of your organization. Our boys Sid and Keith will take us through that journey will help you find the value in prioritizing compassion and occupational transition over a simple massacre-style firing is better for you and your business in the long run - because we tried to do it to Keith and Sid said "No." Our boys will breakdown the best way to begin your business relationship breakups so be sure to be here for this week's Overlap Podcast.

Why We Read #105

For this week's Overlap Podcast, we ask a simple question: what do actor LeVar Burton, former First Ladies Barbara and Laura Bush, and Drag Queen Supreme RuPaul Andre Charles all have in common? Answer: they all know that "Reading is Fundamental." This week, our boys Sid and Keith discuss why everyone must make reading an intentional and regular practice if they want to be successful in business and in life. (And we learn that Keith can, in fact, read, which is the shocker of the year thus far as we had $20 on him being a functioning adult illiterate … and that, children, is "shade," not "reading," since "Shade is, I don't have to tell you you're ugly because you already know you're ugly," per the infamous Dorian Corey of "Paris is Burning" fame.) So, peruse some pages as you enjoy this week's episode because the library is open, children.

Epiphany on the Mountain #104

What do our boys Sid and Keith have in common with the documentary "Grizzly Man," the Unabomber, Paul of Thebes and Transcendentalist writer Henry David Thorreau? Well, yes, facial hair, obviously … a general spirit of surlyness, yes, granted … okay, stop guessing … what we were hoping for in your answer was that they all found strength, comfort and well-being being far from the madding crowd out in the coots and hern of nature, specifically mountain nature. (And, thankfully, only one of them used that reflection time out in the boundaries of hither and yon to commit federal crimes … that we're aware of, since you can't really keep eyes on Keith 24-7, can you?) In this week's Overlap Podcast, our boys trade their normal jaunts about EOS into tales involving a different sort of EOS … Eating Off Sticks (hopefully over a fire, though we could easily see Keith eating raw hot dogs). Both Sid and Keith will tell you their own mountain tales and what the time on the mountain did for them and theirs, recounting stories and anecdotes that will make this episode the most important piece of mountain-based popular culture since 2005's premiere of the groundbreaking film "Brokeback Mountain." (Draw your own Sid and Keith/Brokeback Mountain comparison joke here, though you're doing it wrong if the phrase "I wish I could quit you" isn't part of it.) This week's Overlap is going straight to the mountaintop, so lace up your crampons, find your good walking stick and don't forget the poop shovel - a journey of self-introspection, simplicity, togetherness, quiet solitude and a family of raccoons eating your giant bag of puffy Cheetos, much to your chagrin… Links from Keith's Trip Trail Keith took up the mountain https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/tennessee/mount-leconte-via-rainbow-falls-trail?sh=ueil1x Trail Keith took down the mountain https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/tennessee/mount-leconte-via-the-bullhead-trail?sh=ueil1x How to get a permit to camp on Mount LeConte https://smokiespermits.nps.gov/index.cfm?BCPermitTypeID=1

Cash is King #103

Throughout the centuries, one question continues to be asked throughout time immortal, echoing through generation after generation as the millennia fly by while still never being adequately answered: "Who's the King?" Hard to answer, we know, given the plethora of Kings one could choose - Martin Luther King, Carole King, Don King, Gayle King, King Cotton, Nat King Cole, Rodney King, King Cole Gillette, Billie Jean King, King Arthur Flour, Regina King, Stephen King, King Koopa, the Kings of Comedy, and, naturally, King Ralph. Alas, none of those are the one true King, but take heart, dear listeners, as our boys Sid and Keith have got the right answer, the simple cup of the carpenter that turns out to be the one True Grail - Cash. Money. Paper. Dolla Dolla Bills, y'all. On this week's Overlap Podcast, we get the Royal treatment on how the Money Monarch Myth can put you on the path to Full Fiscal Failure. Our boys will help get you to where you'll be making stacks on stacks on stacks for your business with cash flow management tips and tricks - you'll be graduating from it being All About the Benjamins to All About Them Clevelands, Son. (Just Google it. We'll wait.) So get ready to make them money moves on this week's Overlap Podcast (and, seriously, find "King Ralph" streaming somewhere - it's a freakin' classic - Peter O'Toole and John MFing Goodman. That's all you should need to know.)

Delegate, Automate and Elevate #102

What is essential for the American presidency, the human digestive system and in every business? Answer: having a No. 2 you know you can rely on to be regular and solid. Now that you've gotten over your initial reaction to a rather erudite poop joke - this week on the Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith aren't just focused on a good No. 2. They're wanting to help you learn to do one of the hardest things anyone anywhere has issues with - being able to actually and effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities. Without properly delegating and finding the trust to delegate to your employees and coworkers, you're setting yourself up for a disaster of epic proportions. Everyone everywhere, be you a brand new business owner or a wizened, long-time entrepreneur, will be able to find great value in this week's episode so be sure to tune in yourself - this is not the episode to delegate out to someone else. It's best heard and processed with your own two ears.

How to Change #101

In 1974, the bewitching Stevie Nicks wrote out her feelings of uncertainty and doubt about her relationship with bandmate and then boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham while she was up in Aspen as he toured with Don Everly. And those written out feelings formed one of Fleetwood Mac's most recognizable and well-loved songs off of the eventual Rumours album that will be a thesis for this week's episode of The Overlap Podcast: "Landslide." No, dear listeners, Keith isn't exploring the depths of his soul in the snow-covered hills, but our boys Sid and Keith will be discussing why you might have "been afraid of changin'" something in your business life you've been reluctant to change or let go of. While this process is difficult and fraught with emotional peril, our boys are here to guide you through, reminding you that both you and and children get older and that "time makes you bolder." So, enjoy this week's life-changing episode of The Overlap Podcast … and just be glad the writer's room didn't try to engage in meaning-making from the musical works of Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute.

Chad Warweg | The journey of business #100

100 Episodes … a milestone celebration for any collaborative media effort, but certainly a monumental one for us here at the Overlap Podcast. So, how do we celebrate such a momentous occasion? Do we pull a "What's My Line" and have a live intro recorded by President Gerald Ford? (Probably not, what with him being dead and all…) Maybe go with the "All in the Family" and have a clip show hosted by a universally beloved celebrity, like they did with Henry Fonda? (Yeah, we can't afford Tom Hanks and the writing staff has already threatened them with murder if they do another damn clip show.) Do we follow a pop culture trope and kill off a major character in our 100th episode? (Please let it be Keith, please let it be Keith, please let it be Keith…) Maybe a special musical episode for our 100th, a'la Scrubs or That 70s Show? (No one wants to hear a song about EOS … except maybe Sid) Well, we did … none of those things. We did bring Friend of the Pod Chad Warweg onboard this week for a special lookback with our boys Sid and Keith to go through the highs, lows, and middles of the past 100 episodes that bring back memories both misty and watercolored. If you're a new listener or an OG Overlap follower, there's something to enjoy in this week's broadcast … especially at the very end when Keith jumps his motorcycle over a live shark. Will he make it? Where did we get a shark? Will he go "Aaaayyy" like the Fonz as he does it? Will the writing staff finally be fired for constantly dragging one of the hosts for filth? Tune in and find out in this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast.

Half-Time Adjustments #99

[Background music: Inspirational orchestral score composed by Hans Zimmer] [Enter: world-weary football coach into the locker room for the quintessential "talk"] Coach (in a commanding and impassioned voice): Alright, listen up, team. It's halftime, and it's time for some serious introspection. This is The Overlap Podcast, where we gather to dissect the game of business and conquer the challenges that stand in our way. Let me tell you something about the time we find ourselves in, this time of mid-year reflection. It's the perfect time to evaluate, to reevaluate, and to ignite the fire within. [Assembled athletes clap in unison in agreement] Coach: We've come too far to let complacency settle in. We need to dig deep, find that hunger, and unleash our potential because this … this is where the real champions rise to the occasion and conquer their world. [Another agreement unison clap] Coach: Now, I know we can count on our mainstays, our boys Sid and Keith to … Oh, Keith, my man … you bring so much to the table, but your opinions... they need a little fine-tuning. You're like a quarterback with a slightly off-target throw, like if you tried to get … Don Knotts to play for the New England Patriots. However… we know that you have it within yourself to challenge yourself, push yourself, and turn those wobbly passes into game-winning touchdowns and do it in a way that will inspire and enliven us listeners all. We're all in this together, and together we'll conquer every obstacle in our path. [Agreement unison clap, with Keith's about a half second behind everyone else's] Coach: Now, let's talk about our goals for the second half of this year. We're going to dive deep into personal growth, resilience, and success strategies that will leave our competition in awe. We'll tackle mindset, relationships, EOS, and everything in between. This is the moment we make a mark, where we define our legacy and show the world who we are. [Unison slow clap starts, Keith still a half second behind each time] Coach: Greatness is not bestowed upon the timid. It's earned by those who are willing to push beyond their limits, who embrace the discomfort, and who refuse to settle for mediocrity. We will rise above the noise, we will overcome adversity and we will do the damn thing. So, who is ready to tune in and turn up this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast so we can go out and kick some business-world ass? [Team cheers and begins to rush out of the locker room, save Keith, who trips and falls over a bench and is immediately knocked unconscious] [Music fades out] Omniscient Third Person Narrator: (Looks at unconscious Keith and audibly sighs exasperatedly) Welcome to The Overlap Podcast, where the halfway point of our year is your halfway point to glory.

Raising Your Business #98

When you think of the overlap between business ownership and parenthood, what could possibly come to mind? Momager Supreme Kris Jenner? The OG Father/Manager Joe Jackson? Wire Hanger Hater and 51 percent owner of PepsiCo Joan "Mommie Dearest" Crawford? Probably not - we know we tend to be niche pop culturalists here in the Overlap Podcast writers' room. However, our boys Sid and Keith have us covered this week (and won't even wake us up at 2 in the morning and hand us an axe to cut down the shrubberies outside) as they take a deep dive into the similarities and synergy that make up the shared circle portion of Venn diagram that is these two titans of life on this planet we call Earth. Marvel in the meaning-making, enjoy the extrapolations and find peace in the parallels produced - this is a great episode of the Overlap Podcast that will definitely be a "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" and certainly won't be a "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." Tune in and turn up this week's episode … and don't eff with us, dear listeners. This ain't our first time at the rodeo…

Maximizing Time with the Full Focus Planner #97

(Tinny fanfare of trumpets and Sousaphones like the beginning of newsreels in old timey movies begins) The Business Device Hall of Fame, located in the heart of Gary, Indiana, ( near Jermaine Jackson's son Jermajesty's restaurant Jermajesty's Steak and Crepes) better make room for a brand new exhibit because this week's thesis for the Overlap Podcast is going to be the biggest thing for business - even better than when Mavis Beacon taught typing, more monumental than when metal was molded and bent until paper first was clipped and will make the Rolodex look like the piece of crap it truly is - a Lazy Susan for business cards. Yes, this week's central point stands tall above all other business must-haves, save only the GOAT of office supplies - the red Swingline stapler, which was only created after the intense demand from its appearance in the cult classic Mike Judge film "Office Space." What is this Deus Ex Machina, this device from the gods themselves meant to change our world forever and always? Of course, it's the Full Focus Planner - allowing our boys Sid and Keith to further explore the furthest reaches of time management not unlike a modern day Bill S. Preston, Esquire, and Theodore Logan (minus the phone booth and Death, obviously). The pair's excitement for the Full Focus Planner is catchier than Pink Eye and will likely be just as contagious, as our boys share the joys of their new favorite toys. They'll share personal anecdotes, goals set and matched and (because their schedules are so well-managed and curated), they'll even have time to take you through the first 50 pages of their screenplay they've written - picture it, a Whodunnit murder mystery in the style of "Murder on the Orient Express" but with the Muppets as main cast and Hologram Carol Channing as the only human character. Somebody get Jack Warner on the phone - we've got his tent pole flick for next summer. (Okay, maybe not that last part, but… real talk, you'd go see that movie in theater. Or at least pay like $3 to rent and stream it one night, right?) So, Plan to Focus Fully on this week's Overlap Podcast - anyone who finishes the episode can email us to get the 10 question quiz. Score 90 or above and you'll get a coupon for $1.75 off the ticket price for "Murder on the Muppet Express," in theaters June 2028. Get your Full Focus Planner today!

6 Steps to Great Time Management #96

What does this week's episode have in common with Cher, Cyndi Lauper, the Reverend Al Green, French novelist Marcel Proust, and the ever-amazing Sir Huey Lewis? Well, other than all them having a Bacon Number of 2 (the number of steps that it takes to connect all of them to actor Kevin Bacon, per the website the Oracle of Bacon … yeah, real thing that exists) … they all know a quintessential truth about life, the universe and everything - time, and how we use it, is vitally important. In this week's Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith take a deep dive into a topic even the great Morris Day could never master - Time Management (save Jerome, of course - Morris and Jerome - BFF OGs). More than any other resource that you and your business have to have, time is finite and has to be treated like the rare and precious commodity it is because none of us have the ability to get it back once it is gone (barring someone owning a DeLorean with a functioning flux capacitor, the Doctor's Tardis, a time turner, a rundown Colorado ski chalet hot tub short-circuited by a bootleg Soviet Bloc energy drink or some other sort of time travel device). Our boys will take you through the tips, tricks and teachings they've taken in throughout their tour of life - predetermining priorities, getting real with realistic goals, defusing distractions… just to name a few, with their own astute anecdotes and intelligent insights. (Yes, even Keith … we're just as shocked as you are, dear listeners.) So, after this week's episode, you may not be able to turn back time, but you'll be a damn sight better at making sure that time … is on your side, yes, it is…

Proximity Principle #95

When you think of the word "principle," what comes to mind? Heisenberg's Uncertainty Princple? The Peter Principle? Bernoulli's Principle? Seymour Skinner? (Maybe not that last one, unless you're having these notes read to you and didn't see the spelling…) Well, for this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast, our boy Sid takes us on a deep dive of the newest principle sensation sweeping the nation with vital information for your everyday life - The Proximity Principle. Sid will take author Ken Coleman's self-coined Proximity Principle and its premise that in order to achieve goals in your career, you must surround yourself with the people who currently fill the roles to which you aspire. Or, to put it a different way from the Poet Laureate of East Baltimore, Proposition Joe from HBO's "The Wire" - "Wear the part, be the part mother…" Through the Proximity Principle, you set yourself up for better networking and mentorship opportunities that help you up the ladder, which then positions you to better help bring up the next generation to greatness. And in these notes, we will also debut our latest contest - the Keith Principle Conundrum. To win our mystery grand prize, come up with what "The Keith Principle" would address and attempt to explain. If you win, you'll get … The Mystery Box. Is it filled with doubloons? Pecans? Gwyneth Paltrow's severed head? Who knows? It's the Mystery Box… (trademark pending) Tune in to this week's episode to learn more details.

Letting People Go #94

The late, great Neil Sedaka said it best - "They say that breaking up is hard to do / Now, I know, I know that it's true." Wise words from a man whose first big hit was a love letter to his ex-girlfriend… maybe you've heard of her… Carole King? Then again, maybe we shouldn't be taking life advice from the man who also wrote the lyrics "Doo doo doo down dooby doo down down" So, what's more awkward than that incredibly random stream of consciousness intro? Answer: having to let people go from your business. Our boys Sid and Keith are here for you like Dionne Warwick's psychic friends to provide anecdotal experiences, interesting insights and what to expect in the post-firing fallout. From start to finish, you definitely will want to keep this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast and start anew, because it really does tell you… how breaking up is hard to do. Once more, with feeling - "Comma comma down dooby down down, comma comma down dooby doo down down…"

EOS Conference Recap #93

This week's episode of the Overlap Podcast is one that you definitely won't want to miss because you're getting a heaping helping of content we know has worldwide appeal - from the 305 to the DMZ, it's a special guest episode with Mr. Worldwide himself - rapper Pitbull … yeah, no definitely not that. Could you imagine, though? Sid and Keith talking business strategy with Pitbull… yeah… no. However, this week's Overlap, like Pitbull, does have a worldwide component this week - a recap of the 2023 EOS Worldwide Conference, complete with all the insights and experiences from entrepreneurs, business leaders, industry disrupters, EOS implementers and a score of other EOS VIPs. (Sadly not present, special guests Cousin Greg from HBO's "Succession" and the sole surviving cast member from "Match Game '76" Fannie Flagg) Our boys Sid and Keith will give you the highs, lows and middles from this great gathering of EOS's best and brightest from Timbuktu to Walla Walla, Washington and from Hell, Minnesota to Djibouti, Djibouti (Our legal team has requested we mention that participants in the conference may not have been from any of these hilariously named locales, though they possibly maybe could have perhaps at one point been … or visited those sites … or been site adjacent). So, once more into the EOS breach with this week's Overlap Podcast, as we boldly go where we have gone … two, three, maybe four? … times before. Make it so, listeners.

Ross Sykes #92

After decades of penning hits for Motown legends like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Chaka Khan, husband and wife singer/songwriter duo Ashford and Simpson had their greatest triumph with 1984's classic hit "Solid (As A Rock)." How is this remotely relevant to our humble little business podcast, you may ask? Answer: because this week's guest and the advice he gives our boys Sid and Keith (and you), is "Solid, solid as a rock/ and nothing's changed it). This week, our boys sit down with the Master of Mortgage Ross Sykes, owner and founder of Homefront Lending, to dialogue about about not only his journey through the mortgage industry that led to him founding his own successful company but also how to create and maintain the partnerships needed to have the firm foundation a business needs to be able to continue to grow and thrive… a foundation that (cue the music) is … "solid, solid as a rock." No matter what your business may be, this week's episode of The Overlap Podcast will be one that will stand the test of time as one whose advice will remain … what's the word? Steadfast? A bulwark, safe and strong? Hmm… perhaps it's … ah, yes … it will always be (cue music) "solid, solid as a rock. And nothing's changed it." Cameron Rhodes #91

This week's episode of The Overlap Podcast is sure to make a splash - maybe even a bigger splash than when Rodney Dangerfield nailed the almost impossible Triple Lindy Dive at the end of the classic '80s comedy "Back to School" - because we've got the Prince of Pools himself on the pod this week, Cameron Rhodes of Premier Pools Company. Our boys Sid and Keith will set sail with Cameron as he tells them how to navigate the uncharted waters of the business world, including having a first-rate first mate and knowing how to avoid the sharks, Krakens, ghost ships, scurvy and Keith trying to reenact selected scenes from the Little Mermaid (you can't unsee that man in the purple shell bra … our eyes … they burn …) You're going to enjoy the voyage we're embarking on this week, so say Bon Voyage to your business fears and woes and enjoy the journey on this week's Overlap Podcast. Giving Yourself Grace #90

What comes to mind when you think of the word "grace" - is it saying the blessing before eating a meal? An early-2000s TV show character played by Debra Messing? The former princess of Monaco? While all of those answers aren't incorrect, technically, the best right answer might simply be this - grace is giving yourself leeway to make mistakes without beating yourself up too much when bad becomes worse and success fails to setup. Our boys Sid and Keith will run the gamut on giving yourself grace, from defining the concept to making sure you don't let self-compassion become a vehicle for your Inner Saboteur to sneak in. And who better to give personal testimony on the subject of grace giving than Keith, a man who literally lives next to a body of water called Grace Lake - true story, no cap. If you have trouble giving yourself grace, helping yourself heal and moving on from self-created mistakes… well, friend, this week's episode is specially made for you, so tune in and turn up this week's The Overlap Podcast. We were wrong the the podcast notes then - the concept of EOS isn't "the Brussels sprouts of the business world." EOS is the bee's knees, the cat's pajamas, the fox's socks, the best thing since sliced bread … basically, it's any absurdly positive moniker from the Flapper Era you can throw at it, likely pronounced with the Mid-Atlantic Accent, as was the fashion of the time … flo-do-di-oh. On this week's Overlap, our boys Sid and Keith discuss the Entrepreneurial Operating System (the all-powerful aforementioned EOS) and its core values that will be a catalyst for your company's continued prosperity. Using anecdotal experiences from their own journeys through the Land of Business, they'll break down the key factors for implementing EOS and improving your operations in a meaningful and realistic way. The six key components of EOS - vision, people, data, issues, processes and traction - are much like the individual robot parts that make up a Voltron or whatever the Power Rangers called their big robot thing … while each component is important individually on its own, with their powers combined, you and your business will be unstoppable. So, tune in and turn up this week's Overlap Podcast if you want to energize and expand your company's capabilities to their fullest potentials. for more checkout www.overlaplife.com Episode 46: What the Hell is EOS Episode 47: EOS with Kim Coots

How to Successfully Get Away #88

Peter, Paul and Mary knew it. Dobie Gray knew it, too. And Rupert Holmes was the king of it, but you'd know who he was if we told you that it involves a pina colada with him. What do all of these random names have in common and what the heck does it have to do with this week's The Overlap Podcast? It's all about the art of "How to Successfully Get Away," be it via jet plane, drifting or getting caught in the rain and not being into yoga with Mr. Holmes. Our boys Sid and Keith will sit down and level with you about making time for intentional breaks and pauses from the toil and strife that is the daily grind. Because, like that great sainted Knight of the Realm Sir James Buffett before them, our boys know that sometimes in order to stay motivated and to break free of burnout, sometimes you have to just get away for a bit. Or, to quote Sir James, "Changes in latitude, changes in attitude." So, grab a pina colada or margarita and don't blow out your flip flop stepping on a pop top when you rush to listen to this week's Overlap Podcast.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves #87

Do you remember playing The Telephone Game back in grade school, where everybody would line up and you'd whisper a message from the start of the line to the end and it would never end up the same as when it started? Well, our views of life and the world around us can similarly be differing and varied even if we're all experiencing the same happening. On this week's Overlap Podcast, our boys Sid and Keith take a deep dive into the diversity of differing experiences and navigating incongruous narratives about how we view, perceive, interpret and construct our personas and the wonderful world around us. It's all about our own abilities to be masters of our own domain, architects of our destinies, and the potentate of personal perspective this week in a Very Special episode entitled "The Stories We Tell Ourselves," so if you want to learn how to navigate your narrative without giving in to the nattering nabobs of negativism, you're gonna want to tune in to this week's Overlap Podcast.

As our boys are makin' their way through that picturesque Colorado scenery (that y'all won't be seein' on account of this bein' an audio recordin' podcast mostly), they go divin' into why business owners have difficulty with takin' time off and go explorin' into the consequences of not prioritizin' restin' and relaxation. Whether it is the fear of missin' out (that there FOMO everyone is always dreadin') or not settin' clear boundaries or a lack of delegatin' tasks to others within your company, there's a laundry list of reasons they'll get goin' into that'll show why you and your business don't seem to be thrivin' nor jivin'. So, we hope y'all will be joinin' us for the inaugural episode of "Drivin' and Cryin'," especially since usin' this many colloquial apostrophes may have our guy who does the podcast note makin' be writin' us a letter of … resignatin'? Y'all should be tunin' in, turnin' it up and takin' every note of advice down because this week's episode of the Overlap Podcast is definitely one worth listenin' to.
