Shani Fleming has devoted her career to promoting cultural competence and addressing social justice within the health care community. Fleming holds significant clinical experience as a physician assistant (PA), including working in family medicine, adolescent medicine, infectious disease, and urgent care. She teaches in the University of Maryland Graduate School PA program and Intercultural Leadership certificate program. Fleming represents faculty of the Graduate School as a member of the President’s Diversity Advisory Council. Shani Fleming also spoke at PAOS 2021, leading a discussion on cultural humility.

1.5 Years out of school, one new PA's thoughts on student debt, loans, and practice

Miguel Serrato, MS,MHA, PA-C, ATC, is a PAOS member and is in his second year as a practicing orthopaedic PA. He shares with Sam some of the considerations that PAs have regarding financing PA school and student loans. Miguel won the Susan Lindahl Memorial Scholarship in 2019. The Susan Lindahl Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998. Susan, the wife of our founding president Joe Lindahl, passed away following a battle with a brain tumor in 1997. This scholarship fund was established in her honor recognizing the sacrifices Susan and Joe underwent getting the PAOS off the ground and sustaining the organization in the early years. The establishment of this memorial scholarship fund was to cultivate and attract young physician assistant students into the field of orthopaedics.
