Ep 212212. Unintended Consequences of Setting Goals Looking Forward | Clay Clark
Have you ever worked hard day in and day out, week after week, only to find yourself wondering why you’re even doing what you’re doing? Sometimes we are so focused on climbing the ladder that we don’t notice it’s leaning against the wrong wall — and this is because there are unintended consequences to setting your goals by looking forward. When you set goals looking forward, you miss the most important part of goal setting: where you’re going and why you’re going. If you don’t have that purpose and priority before you set your goals and start working away at them, you can’t be productive. So, in this episode, Clay Clark, Founder of ThriveTime Show and co-host of Business School Without the BS, is going to share when he realized he was living a life by default and how he started living a life by design. If you want this same experience facilitated for you, consider joining us at our Goal-Setting Retreat. In this episode, you will learn... Ep 211211. ONE Year After Setting Goals Together, This Happened | Jake & Alyx Dreyfuss
No one succeeds alone — yet, most people try to. One of the biggest mistakes we see people making is that they set goals by themselves, and then they struggle throughout the year because the people who are in their life — the people who have to buy into their goals if they want to accomplish them — aren’t on the same page. That’s why we created The ONE Thing Couple’s Goal-Setting Retreat, modeling an exercise that Jay and Wendy Papasan have been doing for the past decade. The point isn’t to negotiate for whose goals are right, but for each person to understand what the other person’s goals are and how they can support the other person in achieving those goals. In this episode, we’re going to look at what happens when a couple, for the first time, sets their goals together. The results are pretty amazing, but here’s the best part: you can do it too. If you want to put the ideas discussed in this episode into action, consider joining us at our Goal-Setting Retreat. And if you can’t make it to Austin this year, we’ll help you host your own retreat with the Kick Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat and the Goal Setting Retreat Master Course. In this episode, you will learn... [13:20] How you know when you aren’t on the same page with the people close to you. [17:50] What has surprised Jake & Alyx since their goal-setting retreat. [25:40] Why you should set goals with not just your significant other, but also your business partner and/or team. [29:10] What you should avoid when you’re setting goals. [30:00] How to set goals when you aren’t a natural goal setter (and why you should). Ep 210210. ONE Thing to Grow Together as a Couple | Kaelyn Loes & Brent Wallace
When you set your goals, are you doing it by yourself or with your significant other? When we’re not aligned with the people who are most important to us, the people who have a significant stake in our lives, we’re eliminating one of the most powerful support systems we have — and putting obstacles in the path of our goals. So how can we get them on board with the goal-setting process, even if they’re not goal setters themselves? In this episode, we’re going to look at what one couple did in this exact situation, Kaelyn Loes and Brent Wallace. One of them was your prototypical goal setter — they read the book, listened to the podcast, used productivity apps — while the other felt that the goal-setting process restricted them at times. But today, they go on this journey together, and in this episode you’ll learn about the tools and conversations that helped them come into alignment. Ep 209209. Proven Practices for Setting Goals as a Couple
What were you taught about setting goals as a kid? If we’re taught anything, we’re usually taught to set goals around New Year’s. But now, as we head into the last quarter of the year, is actually the perfect time to start considering our goals for the upcoming year. Gary Keller and Jay Papasan show us that, if you want to have great success, you have to have a bigger view of time — and you have to understand that the actions you take today may not have results until days or months down the road. So, in this episode, Jay and Wendy Papasan are going to share how they’ve been setting goals for years and how you can apply these simple practices into your own relationship and/or business, even if the other people in your world aren’t goal setters. If you want to join us at our Goal-Setting Retreat Nov. 9th & 10th in Austin, TX, you can learn more at the1thing.com/event. Ep 204204. BONUS | Choose What You Will Master Wisely
Have you ever found that the principles we discuss in this show and in the book sound easy – but then, in practice, end up being really difficult to make a consistent part of your life? We get it, and we know that stumbling along the journey to living Your ONE Thing can feel isolating. That’s why our #1 priority this year has been nurturing the Living Your ONE Thing community that supports people who need more accountability; who need support when they feel lost or alone. Because we just wrapped up our three-part accountability series, we want to share one of these coaching calls with you so that you can see what this accountability looks like in action and what it looks like to live the 80/20 rule. Ep 203203. Accountability Series (Part 3) – Why a Coach Can Change Everything
What does it mean to have accountability in your life? Because there are different levels of accountability. We can hold ourselves accountable by using tools like a 411, 66-Day Challenge, or The ONE Thing Planner. We can bring accountability into our world by recruiting an accountability partner. Then, when we want the highest level of accountability possible, we have to look to an expert – to a coach. A lot of people ask us what it means to have a coach, how to know if it’s the right fit, and how to get the most out of that relationship. So, today, we sit down to learn the answers to those questions from Charlotte Savoy, who both embodies accountability in her businesses and coaches other people on The ONE Thing through MAPS Business Coaching. If you think this sounds like a good fit for you, you can learn more about our Get a ONE Thing Coach, Become a ONE Thing Coach, or Living Your ONE Thing Community. In this episode, you will learn... Ep 202202. Accountability Series (Part 2) – Coaching People to Their Possibilities | Gene Rivers
Does your organization have a culture of accountability? It is a necessary part of sustainable business growth, but as many of us have experienced, it’s not an easy thing to do. So, today, Gene Rivers is going to teach us how he created a culture of accountability with his team – and how you can coach your people to their possibilities, too! Ep 201201. Accountability Series (Part 1) – 3 Critical Mistakes of Business Growth
Are you accountable – to yourself and other people? We all want accountability in our lives, in one way or another, but developing habits around accountability and then building a culture of accountability within an organization are both a lot harder to do than they sound. So we invited a couple of our favorite accountability experts to join us for a three-part series that will help you bring more accountability to yourself, your team, and your organization. Today’s guest has personally led over 9,000 independent coaching calls over the past four years, leading conversations with business owners across all industries, and he has developed a very unique perspective on the mistakes you may be making that, if unchanged, will inevitably lead to burnout. So, in this episode, Abe Shreve teaches us about the three critical mistakes of business growth. If you are interested in what it looks like to have more accountability in your life, go to the1thing.com/training. In this episode, you will learn... Ep 199199. Having a Great Career Starts with Purpose & Planning | Dr. Cindy McGovern
Imagine you are on an airplane and, along the way, it starts to deviate just a few degrees off course – if the plane does not correct course over the length of that flight, do you think you’ll end up in the right destination? Probably not, and who knows where we would end up! But this is the way that most people live their lives – they wake up, take action, and move forward, but they’re not always clear on exactly where they’re going or why they’re going there. And when they’re off course, they’re not even aware of it, which is why so many people live a life by default instead of a life by design. So, today, we want to introduce you to Dr. Cindy McGovern, who has been living the principles of The ONE Thing to ensure that she has a great career, and you will hear how purpose and planning were fundamental to living her mission: changing the way that people view sales. In the last episode, we learned about how Keith Cunningham lost $100MM dollars – and why it was worth it because he developed this habit of thinking time. Do you know what it’s like to be so busy taking action that it feels like you don’t have time to slow down and create a plan? We all feel this way sometimes. It’s become the norm in society – we wake up, we check email, we show up to work, we check email, we go to meetings, other people need our help so we stop to help them, and on and on. We race through the day feeling like we are so busy and then we question if we got anything done. Today’s guest shares why there’s nothing worse than running enthusiastically in the wrong direction – and how doing so cost him $100MM. Our guest John Israel, founder of The Mr. Thank You Project and author of The Mr. Thank You Project, experienced an epiphany: if he wanted to make a huge, positive impact on the world, he had to start by doing just ONE thing to express his gratitude, every day. Ep 181181. How Billionaires Set Goals (Part 1)
Are you living a life by default or are you living a life by design? Most of us are living a life by default. We wake up, take action, experience some successes, experience some failures, then repeat – but we get what we get by default. When billionaires set goals, however, they cast a vision into the future, then look backwards and set goals to the now. That’s how we live a life by design. In this episode, we’re sharing the first half of Jay Papasan and Geoff Woods’s keynote presentation at the Keller Williams Family Reunion Convention 2019. This part is about the high-level principles of goal setting like a billionaire, and in the second part, we will dive into the tools billionaires use for goal setting. In this episode, you will learn... [3:40] How you can start goal setting to the now [11:20] What you can learn from Gary Keller about getting clarity on your goals [16:00] Where in your life are you currently chasing distractions and saying no to what is truly the priority? The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: If you want to achieve extraordinary results, you can’t set goals looking forward. You have to have a vision for where you want to end up so that you can look back and identify the path that will get you there. When you do that, you will know how to separate a true priority from a distraction. Ep 180180. ONE Thing to Manage Stress & Overwhelm | Craig Ballantyne
What happens when your actions aren’t aligned with your goals? When we are focusing on our ONE thing, it’s not like the rest of the world stops. The emails don’t stop piling up, meeting requests don’t cease to exist, and customer fires don’t magically disappear. The deeper we go into our one thing, the more this pressure builds – and we’re often so afraid of this chaos that we use time set aside for our ONE thing to clear off some of that 80% work. It feels productive for a moment, but in reality, we’re acting out of alignment with our goals. So what happens when real stress and real anxiety starts to build up, and how do you deal with it without taking a detour off of the road to being extraordinary? To help us answer those questions, we are joined once again by Craig Ballantyne, author of the Wall-Street Journal Bestseller Unstoppable and The Perfect Day Formula. In this episode, you will learn... [4:00] How we suffer from the paradox of freedom [7:00] What catalyzes our stress and anxiety [18:45] How you can get clarity on what’s most important [24:00] How to take a more proactive approach to your life The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Out of everything that you heard in this episode, what is the ONE thing that really stood out to you? And how can we take that spark of interest, that curiosity, and turn it into action? It’s ONE thing at a time, over time, that creates results – so just pick ONE thing, and if you’re not in the middle of a 66-day challenge, start one: http://the1thing.com/66daychallenge. Ep 179179. How a Promise Can Make Your ONE Thing Stick | Alex Sheen
Have you ever scheduled time for your most important work? Chances are, all of us has done this at least once. But do you regularly time block and then protect that time like the air you breathe, defending it against every distraction that comes up? For most of us, the answer is no – but why is that? In this episode, we suggest that this is because we’re not great at keeping the promises we make to ourselves or to others – and we believe that if you can get a little more intentional about the promises you make when you’re planning your time, and the commitments you make to others, then everything else will become easier or unnecessary. Our guest, Alex Sheen, has taken this idea of a promise and turned it into a movement and a book called Because I Said I Would, which is helping people all over the world make promises that stick. We recorded this conversation as part of our monthly ONE Thing webinar series. Every month, we feature an incredible author so that you can learn directly from them and ask questions. If you want to sign up for our next FREE monthly webinar, head over to the1thing.com/webinars. In this episode, you will learn... [7:30] How the “market conditions” of promises have changed with technology [12:30] The anatomy of a promise [18:00] How you can gracefully say no – and still help people move towards their goals [28:30] How you can leverage time blocking to prioritize what you do and don’t promise to do The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: What’s the ONE thing that you’re not doing that would make saying no easier or unnecessary? Maybe you need to get clear on why you’re saying yes to what you’re saying yes to and no to what you’re saying no to. If you don’t have clarity on your bigger purpose, your bigger Why, it can be difficult to stick to your guns and say no when it matters. Or maybe you need a go-to no sentence like Alex’s: “It would be easy for me to say yes right now, but I respect you too much to keep a promise I can’t keep.” How much time do you think you’ll need to block to come up with that sentence? And how many times do you think you’ll have to practice it, even just one time a day, before it just sounds natural? Ep 175175. The Surprising Power of Mastering the Fundamentals with the 411
What does football have to do with the 411? Well back in 1960, the Packers made it to the NFL Championship, had a lead the whole game, and then lost to the Eagles in a stunning display in the fourth quarter. On the first day of training camp the following year, coach Vince Lombardi walked into the locker room, held up a football, and said, “This is a football.” Why did Lombardi start with something so fundamental? He realized that if they could truly understand the surprising power of mastering the fundamentals, that that ONE thing could make everything else easier or unnecessary – and in 1961, the Packers went on to win the championship. So in this episode, we’re going to help you master the most fundamental tool in The ONE Thing toolbox: the 411. In this episode, you will learn... [6:30] How to get clarity on what matters most thing is using the 411. [12:00] How to differentiate a priority from a distraction by goal setting to the now. [19:00] Why sometimes you will be succeeding so slowly that you feel like you’re failing. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Getting what you want out of life is not about doing more – it’s about doing more of what matters most. Everything does not matter equally, and there are a handful of things that you can do, at any moment, that will create the majority of your results. Are you willing to try leveraging a 411 so that you are always clear on what those priorities are, so that your planner and your calendar can match your priorities? How do you show up as a better leader, and how do you do it in a world that’s constantly distracting us? Technology has changed our lives in profoundly positive ways, but it’s also created more distractions than ever before – and if you’re like most people, you probably feel more disconnected than ever before. So we sat down with the author of Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation, Dan Schawbel, to discuss how we can do a better job at facilitating connections in the workplace, in spite of the technology that’s constantly surrounding us. [16:15] How do you help people get clear on the team’s purpose and what fulfills people on an individual level? [24:00] How you can create connection (and the ONE thing that makes it easier or unnecessary) The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: What is the ONE thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary when it comes to making connections with people? Ep 173173. Getting on the Same Page with Money | A Couples Goal Setting Retreat Case Study
Do you have a New Year’s Resolution about your health, organization, or money? There’s a good chance you do because, statistically, these are the three most common goals people set every year. But as we mentioned in the last episode, only eight percent of people actually succeed in implementing their resolutions. One of the big challenges here is that you can’t succeed alone, especially if you have a significant other, but so many of us try to. Today, we are sharing the case study of a couple who ran up against that challenge year after year – which, ultimately, meant they were fighting about money year after year – until they started having an annual couple’s goal-setting retreat 10 years ago. Now, Jenn and JP Lewis never fight about money, and in this episode, we’re going to break down how they did it and the ONE thing you can do today that will make everything else easier or unnecessary when it comes to setting your annual goals. In this episode, you will learn... [4:45] Jenn’s advice for anyone who is hesitant to participate in a couple’s goal-setting retreat [12:00] What it looks like to reallocate funds and time to what matters most, as a team. [18:00] Why you need emotional buy-in during the goal-setting process. [25:00] The ONE thing you can do to make starting the couple’s goal-setting process easier or unnecessary. [43:30] How becoming part of a community of goal setters can bring your couple’s goal setting to a new level. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: So, out of everything that you've heard in this episode, what's your lead domino? What's that first step? We’ll recap the tools covered in this episode, and you can choose just ONE to be your lead domino: Sit down and ask each other the questions that Jenn and JP talked about (and this is their suggestion for where to start), which you can find in the Kick Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat. Ep 172172. Increase Your Impact with The ONE Thing | Wyatt Graves
Have you started implementing the principles of The ONE Thing in your life? It’s surprisingly simple... but it’s not easy. We’ve spoken with thousands of you who have started living The ONE Thing, and once you start going down that path, you realize something pretty quickly: there’s no way to succeed alone. Today, we’re sharing Wyatt Graves’ journey from discovering to implementing the principles of The ONE Thing – to empowering a community to live these principles, too. In this episode, you will learn... [7:45] What changes when you start living The ONE Thing [13:00] How Wyatt recruited the most important people in his life to come to the goal-setting retreat with him (even those who were a little skeptical) [19:30] What it looks like when you have a relationship with your goals [26:40] What most people are missing when they start trying to implement The ONE Thing [33:00] How to endure the monotony of success The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Are you on your road to mastery when it comes to living The ONE Thing? And what do you think will be possible if the people in your world start going down that road, too? When we asked Wyatt why he continues down this road to mastery, he said it’s because he knows that all leadership begins with self-leadership; it’s difficult to influence the people you care about if you’re not, first and foremost, walking the talk. So who in your world do you really care about and who need to hear this message? Who do you want to experience what you’re experiencing by implementing the principles of The ONE Thing? Send them this episode, send them to the1thing.com, or send an email introducing them to Geoff [at] the1thing.com and he will personally respond. Ep 171171. Resolutions vs. Habits | Why ONE is Better Than the Other
Half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year – but how many succeed? According to a study conducted by the University of Scranton and published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only EIGHT PERCENT of people who set resolutions will actually succeed in implementing them. Today, we want to share why we believe that so many people fail – and the ONE thing you can do to be successful in making the changes you want to make this year. In this episode, you will learn... [2:45] Why most people aren’t successful in implementing their resolutions. [5:40] Why does it matter if you get in better shape, get more organized, or spend less (three of the most common resolutions)? [6:30] How to get clear on the WHY and PURPOSE behind your goals. [11:30] Why your time blocking needs to reflect your priorities. [13:30] What motivates people. [18:00] What you can do to turn a resolution into a habit. [22:45] ONE tip for becoming part of the 8% who succeed. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: So, where do you get started? Like anything with The ONE Thing, we encourage you to think big and then go small. So instead of thinking about everything we talked about in this episode, we encourage you to focus on just the ONE thing you can do that will make everything else easier or unnecessary. Keep asking the clarifying question until you find a specific, measurable activity – then go on a 66-day challenge, put that activity in your calendar, and make that activity a habit. Ep 170170. It’s Time for Your Goal Setting Retreat
Think back to five years ago. What did you desperately want in your life? And have you achieved those goals yet? Gary Keller says that we can be anywhere we want in the next five years, but many of us are pretty much in the same place we were five years ago. Why is that? Because extraordinary results are only possible when you do the right things: when you have clarity about the direction that you’re going, clarity on your priorities, your calendar matches those priorities, and you act in order of priority. With the Holidays and New Year around the corner, this is the time of year when many of us are again dreaming about the future – and this time around, we want to help you establish a relationship with your goals so that you can knock down those big dominos! Ep 169169. What Stops Entrepreneurs from Achieving Extraordinary Growth & Succeeding Through Others
Do you want to build an empire? Everything that’s required to achieve extraordinary results and, ultimately, build an empire is surprisingly simple – but that doesn’t mean everyone is doing those things. So in this episode, we discuss some of the simple little things that most entrepreneurs are not doing, preventing them from achieving the extraordinary growth they desire. This episode was originally recorded for an episode of Ryan Moran’s The One Percent, but we knew that some of you needed to hear this conversation as well. You can hear more from both Ryan Moran and Geoff Woods at CapCon 2019 (Jan 21-23 in Dallas), where Geoff will be a guest speaker. -- Mentioned in this episode: Factor 75 Head to FactorMeals.com/one50 and use code one50 to get 50% off. Ep 168168. Missing Work-Life Balance? Make it ONE of Your Goals!
Are you spending too much time working in pursuit of freedom? Gary Keller says you can be anywhere you want in the next five years... and if this is true, it really comes down to how you manage your time. We can't work more hours in the day and have a more flexible lifestyle, so something else has to change. In this episode, we’re sharing one of our most impactful episodes and one of our most-requested guests, Gene Rivers. After The ONE Thing Goal-Setting retreat, we realized we needed to share this story with you all again to remind you what’s possible when you truly invest your time (as opposed to spending it on emails and meetings and random tasks). Gene and his wife run nine successful businesses while still finding time to vacation four months out of the year and devote time to their family every day. He will teach you how you can get anything you want when you're intentional with your time and willing to focus on the most important work. Are you in relationships with the right people, and are you being intentional about investing in the relationships that matter most? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – no one succeeds alone. We sat down with the best-selling author of Friend of a Friend, David Burkus, to learn why you don’t really need to be networking to meet new people, how most of the relationships and people you need to access can be gained by tapping in the people you’re already in a relationship with, and the key habits you can form to completely transform the quality of those relationships. Ep 166166. How L'Occitane Brought The ONE Thing to Their Organization
Do you want to live the principles of The ONE Thing not only in your personal life, but in your organization too? Sometimes we doubt whether we’ll get buy-in from leadership, or whether these principles can truly become part of the bigger corporate culture. It’s something a lot of us wrestle with throughout our careers. In this episode, we share a case study of what it looks like to bring the principles of The ONE Thing into a large organization. L’Occitane is a natural beauty brand from the South of France that was started in 1976, focusing on selling skin care, body care, and fragrances. Fast forward to today and they’re in more than 90 countries and on a mission to empower women around the globe. We’re joined by Shannon Greer, L’Occitane’s Vice President of Retail in North America. Ep 165165. Time Blocking for Rapid Business Growth | with Matthew Pollard
Do you ever feel like you’re putting in a lot of hard work to achieve extraordinary results in your business or in you role, day in and day out, but you just aren’t going anywhere? We all have the same 24 hours in a day, yet some people get different results – and it all comes down to how you manage your time. If you’re acting entrepreneurially, constantly relying on your natural ability, taking action, making mistakes, and tweaking things, you’re going to run up against a ceiling of achievement. But you have an opportunity to get purposeful – to identify a model and system for achieving extraordinary results. To help us leverage that opportunity, we’re talking to someone who is responsible for five multi-million dollar business success stories in his home country of Australia, all before the age of 30. His humble beginnings, the adversities that he faced, and his rise to success are inspirational stories of how anyone, with the right motivation and the right strategies, can achieve anything they set their mind to – including rapid business growth. Our guest is the bestselling author of The Introvert's Edge, Matthew Pollard. In this episode, you will learn... [3:40] The ONE thing that’s missing for so many of us. [7:30] The 3-step model that will help you move from E to P when it comes to scaling your business. [10:10] What this 3-step model looks like in practice The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Have you ever sat down and and really asked yourself, “what’s the value that I deliver?” Have you ever actually looked out at the market to see if there is an unmet need, as opposed to just doing the work that falls into your lap? Ep 164164. Growing Your Business by Focusing on Your 20% | Chris Suarez
At the end of the day, do you feel fulfilled and content? Imagine working hard to scale your business and having the first year where you net a million dollars. The year after, again, you net a million dollars. And then you realize something's wrong. The person you're going to meet today is a perfect example of this. He worked so hard to build a business that could scale, that could create abundance for his people and for himself personally. He did, in fact, net a million dollars two years in a row – then he realized that he was cheating himself out of what it actually means to live a life. We're going to go on a journey to see how he began to apply the 80/20 principle, focusing on his 20% for a maximum of just two hours a day, and then brought people into his world to take his 80% so they could all live a bigger, more fulfilled life. If you are someone who has the capacity to bring leverage into your world, then you will want to pay close attention to what Chris Suarez has to say in this episode. In this episode, you will learn... [22:17] What it means to live experientially [24:33] What you can do if it feels like you're cheating yourself out of what it means to actually live a life [36:45] The habits you can acquire that will make being a great coach, being a great leader, and being a talent magnet easier or unnecessary [48:50] The ingredients of contentment & an exercise you can do to find your opportunity The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Are you spending your time or are you investing your time? So many of us go through our day unconsciously just spending our time and there is no return on the investment. We work hard, we're busy, and we wonder if we are even getting anything done. As a result, many of us are lacking fulfillment and, certainly, many of us are lacking contentment. If you want to chance this cycle, whip out a sheet of paper and start by writing down everything you do in the day, from the moment you wake up to when you go to sleep, to get an honest snapshot of where your time is going. Then, you can use the equations Chris shared to determine whether you are investing your time or passively spending it: (Activity x Time) / Choice = Money (Money + People) / Opportunity = Time Time + Money = Experience (Time x Money) / Experience = Contentment You take activity times your time, or time on task over time, divided by choice, meaning you're being strategic about where that activity and time is being invested. That equals the money. And you take money plus people, leveraged over opportunity, meaning focusing on the right opportunity. That gives you time. Then you take time plus money and that gives you experiences. Then time times money over experience is what gives you the contentment. Finally, ask yourself these questions: Are you investing your time on the right activities? Could you be doing better? Where could you be doing a better job of investing in people? And where could you be having the people that are already in your world focusing on even better opportunities? Where could you be investing your time and money in experiences that matter? And how can you design your time and money around experiences rather than hoping the experiences just show up?
