Ep 175175. The Surprising Power of Mastering the Fundamentals with the 411

What does football have to do with the 411? Well back in 1960, the Packers made it to the NFL Championship, had a lead the whole game, and then lost to the Eagles in a stunning display in the fourth quarter. On the first day of training camp the following year, coach Vince Lombardi walked into the locker room, held up a football, and said, “This is a football.” Why did Lombardi start with something so fundamental? He realized that if they could truly understand the surprising power of mastering the fundamentals, that that ONE thing could make everything else easier or unnecessary – and in 1961, the Packers went on to win the championship. So in this episode, we’re going to help you master the most fundamental tool in The ONE Thing toolbox: the 411. In this episode, you will learn... [6:30] How to get clarity on what matters most thing is using the 411. [12:00] How to differentiate a priority from a distraction by goal setting to the now. [19:00] Why sometimes you will be succeeding so slowly that you feel like you’re failing. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Getting what you want out of life is not about doing more – it’s about doing more of what matters most. Everything does not matter equally, and there are a handful of things that you can do, at any moment, that will create the majority of your results. Are you willing to try leveraging a 411 so that you are always clear on what those priorities are, so that your planner and your calendar can match your priorities? Ep 173173. Getting on the Same Page with Money | A Couples Goal Setting Retreat Case Study

Do you have a New Year’s Resolution about your health, organization, or money? There’s a good chance you do because, statistically, these are the three most common goals people set every year. But as we mentioned in the last episode, only eight percent of people actually succeed in implementing their resolutions. One of the big challenges here is that you can’t succeed alone, especially if you have a significant other, but so many of us try to. Today, we are sharing the case study of a couple who ran up against that challenge year after year – which, ultimately, meant they were fighting about money year after year – until they started having an annual couple’s goal-setting retreat 10 years ago. Now, Jenn and JP Lewis never fight about money, and in this episode, we’re going to break down how they did it and the ONE thing you can do today that will make everything else easier or unnecessary when it comes to setting your annual goals. In this episode, you will learn... [4:45] Jenn’s advice for anyone who is hesitant to participate in a couple’s goal-setting retreat [12:00] What it looks like to reallocate funds and time to what matters most, as a team. [18:00] Why you need emotional buy-in during the goal-setting process. [25:00] The ONE thing you can do to make starting the couple’s goal-setting process easier or unnecessary. [43:30] How becoming part of a community of goal setters can bring your couple’s goal setting to a new level. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: So, out of everything that you've heard in this episode, what's your lead domino? What's that first step? We’ll recap the tools covered in this episode, and you can choose just ONE to be your lead domino: Sit down and ask each other the questions that Jenn and JP talked about (and this is their suggestion for where to start), which you can find in the Kick Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat. Ep 172172. Increase Your Impact with The ONE Thing | Wyatt Graves

Have you started implementing the principles of The ONE Thing in your life? It’s surprisingly simple... but it’s not easy. We’ve spoken with thousands of you who have started living The ONE Thing, and once you start going down that path, you realize something pretty quickly: there’s no way to succeed alone. Today, we’re sharing Wyatt Graves’ journey from discovering to implementing the principles of The ONE Thing – to empowering a community to live these principles, too. In this episode, you will learn... [7:45] What changes when you start living The ONE Thing [13:00] How Wyatt recruited the most important people in his life to come to the goal-setting retreat with him (even those who were a little skeptical) [19:30] What it looks like when you have a relationship with your goals [26:40] What most people are missing when they start trying to implement The ONE Thing [33:00] How to endure the monotony of success The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Are you on your road to mastery when it comes to living The ONE Thing? And what do you think will be possible if the people in your world start going down that road, too? When we asked Wyatt why he continues down this road to mastery, he said it’s because he knows that all leadership begins with self-leadership; it’s difficult to influence the people you care about if you’re not, first and foremost, walking the talk. So who in your world do you really care about and who need to hear this message? Who do you want to experience what you’re experiencing by implementing the principles of The ONE Thing? Send them this episode, send them to the1thing.com, or send an email introducing them to Geoff [at] the1thing.com and he will personally respond. Ep 171171. Resolutions vs. Habits | Why ONE is Better Than the Other

Half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year – but how many succeed? According to a study conducted by the University of Scranton and published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only EIGHT PERCENT of people who set resolutions will actually succeed in implementing them. Today, we want to share why we believe that so many people fail – and the ONE thing you can do to be successful in making the changes you want to make this year. In this episode, you will learn... [2:45] Why most people aren’t successful in implementing their resolutions. [5:40] Why does it matter if you get in better shape, get more organized, or spend less (three of the most common resolutions)? [6:30] How to get clear on the WHY and PURPOSE behind your goals. [11:30] Why your time blocking needs to reflect your priorities. [13:30] What motivates people. [18:00] What you can do to turn a resolution into a habit. [22:45] ONE tip for becoming part of the 8% who succeed. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: So, where do you get started? Like anything with The ONE Thing, we encourage you to think big and then go small. So instead of thinking about everything we talked about in this episode, we encourage you to focus on just the ONE thing you can do that will make everything else easier or unnecessary. Keep asking the clarifying question until you find a specific, measurable activity – then go on a 66-day challenge, put that activity in your calendar, and make that activity a habit. Ep 170170. It’s Time for Your Goal Setting Retreat

Think back to five years ago. What did you desperately want in your life? And have you achieved those goals yet? Gary Keller says that we can be anywhere we want in the next five years, but many of us are pretty much in the same place we were five years ago. Why is that? Because extraordinary results are only possible when you do the right things: when you have clarity about the direction that you’re going, clarity on your priorities, your calendar matches those priorities, and you act in order of priority. With the Holidays and New Year around the corner, this is the time of year when many of us are again dreaming about the future – and this time around, we want to help you establish a relationship with your goals so that you can knock down those big dominos! Ep 169169. What Stops Entrepreneurs from Achieving Extraordinary Growth & Succeeding Through Others

Do you want to build an empire? Everything that’s required to achieve extraordinary results and, ultimately, build an empire is surprisingly simple – but that doesn’t mean everyone is doing those things. So in this episode, we discuss some of the simple little things that most entrepreneurs are not doing, preventing them from achieving the extraordinary growth they desire. This episode was originally recorded for an episode of Ryan Moran’s The One Percent, but we knew that some of you needed to hear this conversation as well. You can hear more from both Ryan Moran and Geoff Woods at CapCon 2019 (Jan 21-23 in Dallas), where Geoff will be a guest speaker. -- Mentioned in this episode: Factor 75 Head to FactorMeals.com/one50 and use code one50 to get 50% off. Ep 168168. Missing Work-Life Balance? Make it ONE of Your Goals!

Are you spending too much time working in pursuit of freedom? Gary Keller says you can be anywhere you want in the next five years... and if this is true, it really comes down to how you manage your time. We can't work more hours in the day and have a more flexible lifestyle, so something else has to change. In this episode, we’re sharing one of our most impactful episodes and one of our most-requested guests, Gene Rivers. After The ONE Thing Goal-Setting retreat, we realized we needed to share this story with you all again to remind you what’s possible when you truly invest your time (as opposed to spending it on emails and meetings and random tasks). Gene and his wife run nine successful businesses while still finding time to vacation four months out of the year and devote time to their family every day. He will teach you how you can get anything you want when you're intentional with your time and willing to focus on the most important work. Ep 167167. How Hidden Networks Can Transform Your Life and Your Career | David Burkus

Are you in relationships with the right people, and are you being intentional about investing in the relationships that matter most? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – no one succeeds alone. We sat down with the best-selling author of Friend of a Friend, David Burkus, to learn why you don’t really need to be networking to meet new people, how most of the relationships and people you need to access can be gained by tapping in the people you’re already in a relationship with, and the key habits you can form to completely transform the quality of those relationships. Ep 166166. How L'Occitane Brought The ONE Thing to Their Organization

Do you want to live the principles of The ONE Thing not only in your personal life, but in your organization too? Sometimes we doubt whether we’ll get buy-in from leadership, or whether these principles can truly become part of the bigger corporate culture. It’s something a lot of us wrestle with throughout our careers. In this episode, we share a case study of what it looks like to bring the principles of The ONE Thing into a large organization. L’Occitane is a natural beauty brand from the South of France that was started in 1976, focusing on selling skin care, body care, and fragrances. Ep 165165. Time Blocking for Rapid Business Growth | with Matthew Pollard

Do you ever feel like you’re putting in a lot of hard work to achieve extraordinary results in your business or in you role, day in and day out, but you just aren’t going anywhere? We all have the same 24 hours in a day, yet some people get different results – and it all comes down to how you manage your time. If you’re acting entrepreneurially, constantly relying on your natural ability, taking action, making mistakes, and tweaking things, you’re going to run up against a ceiling of achievement. But you have an opportunity to get purposeful – to identify a model and system for achieving extraordinary results. To help us leverage that opportunity, we’re talking to someone who is responsible for five multi-million dollar business success stories in his home country of Australia, all before the age of 30. His humble beginnings, the adversities that he faced, and his rise to success are inspirational stories of how anyone, with the right motivation and the right strategies, can achieve anything they set their mind to – including rapid business growth. Our guest is the bestselling author of The Introvert's Edge, Matthew Pollard. In this episode, you will learn... [3:40] The ONE thing that’s missing for so many of us. [7:30] The 3-step model that will help you move from E to P when it comes to scaling your business. [10:10] What this 3-step model looks like in practice The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Have you ever sat down and and really asked yourself, “what’s the value that I deliver?” Have you ever actually looked out at the market to see if there is an unmet need, as opposed to just doing the work that falls into your lap? Have you ever considered what a more scalable sales system for your business might look like? We love that you take the time to invest in your education by listening to this podcast, and we also know that the greatest results come when you back it with action. Ep 164164. Growing Your Business by Focusing on Your 20% | Chris Suarez

At the end of the day, do you feel fulfilled and content? Imagine working hard to scale your business and having the first year where you net a million dollars. The year after, again, you net a million dollars. And then you realize something's wrong. The person you're going to meet today is a perfect example of this. He worked so hard to build a business that could scale, that could create abundance for his people and for himself personally. He did, in fact, net a million dollars two years in a row – then he realized that he was cheating himself out of what it actually means to live a life. We're going to go on a journey to see how he began to apply the 80/20 principle, focusing on his 20% for a maximum of just two hours a day, and then brought people into his world to take his 80% so they could all live a bigger, more fulfilled life. If you are someone who has the capacity to bring leverage into your world, then you will want to pay close attention to what Chris Suarez has to say in this episode. In this episode, you will learn... [22:17] What it means to live experientially [24:33] What you can do if it feels like you're cheating yourself out of what it means to actually live a life [36:45] The habits you can acquire that will make being a great coach, being a great leader, and being a talent magnet easier or unnecessary [48:50] The ingredients of contentment & an exercise you can do to find your opportunity The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Are you spending your time or are you investing your time? So many of us go through our day unconsciously just spending our time and there is no return on the investment. We work hard, we're busy, and we wonder if we are even getting anything done. As a result, many of us are lacking fulfillment and, certainly, many of us are lacking contentment. If you want to chance this cycle, whip out a sheet of paper and start by writing down everything you do in the day, from the moment you wake up to when you go to sleep, to get an honest snapshot of where your time is going. Then, you can use the equations Chris shared to determine whether you are investing your time or passively spending it: (Activity x Time) / Choice = Money (Money + People) / Opportunity = Time Time + Money = Experience (Time x Money) / Experience = Contentment You take activity times your time, or time on task over time, divided by choice, meaning you're being strategic about where that activity and time is being invested. That equals the money. And you take money plus people, leveraged over opportunity, meaning focusing on the right opportunity. That gives you time. Then you take time plus money and that gives you experiences. Then time times money over experience is what gives you the contentment. Finally, ask yourself these questions: Are you investing your time on the right activities? Could you be doing better? Where could you be doing a better job of investing in people? And where could you be having the people that are already in your world focusing on even better opportunities? Where could you be investing your time and money in experiences that matter? And how can you design your time and money around experiences rather than hoping the experiences just show up? Ep 163163. How To Host Your Own Goal Setting Retreat | Jay Papasan & Wendy Papasan

Consider the things that you want to accomplish in your life... is it possible for you to achieve those things alone? Achieving all of our goals requires the support of our significant others, our business partners, our bosses, and our friends. Ep 162162. Setting Goals as a Couple | You Can Be Anywhere You Want in the Next 5 Years

What were the things you really wanted out of life five years ago... and do you have them today? For many of us, the answer is no. But why? Most of us don’t know the proper way to set our goals or create a plan that we CAN accomplish, and we don’t have the tools necessary to build a real relationship with our goals so that we can make consistent progress – and that’s why we created The ONE Thing Couples Goal Setting Retreat. John Schumacher and Carol Stack are perennial goal setters, but they never did it together. Then, after going on their first couples goal setting retreat, they saw a transformation in their results. If you want those results in your relationship – whether that be with your significant other, business partner, team, boss, or friends – then you have three options: Download the Kick-Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat: https://www.the1thing.com/resources/kick-ass-guide-to-your-couples-goal-setting-retreat/ Join us in Austin for The ONE Thing Couples Goal Setting Retreat: www.the1thing.com/event Can't make it to Austin? Get access to The ONE Thing Goal Setting Master Course: www.the1thing.com/gsrcourse In this episode, you will learn... [10:20] How to recognize and break through that ceiling of achievement you keep running into [15:30] Why setting goals as a team can help you overcome limiting beliefs [20:00] What happens when you come together to create a plan and accountability [28:30] How you can get buy-in from your significant other or team members for a couples goal setting retreat [37:20] Why annual goal setting will quickly become a habit that you won’t want to break The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Imagine that it’s five years from now and you are looking back at this very moment; the moment that you knew you could be anywhere you want to be in the next five years, and you’re celebrating because you’re there. What does that look like for you, and what are the things that you started doing differently? We know that many of you listen to the show because you’re high achievers, and you’ve probably set goals at some point in time... which means you probably also know what it’s like to struggle with your goals because the people in your life don’t know how to support you. No one succeeds alone, but most people try to – and it doesn’t have to be that way. Will you make a commitment to yourself and your future to identify the people in your life who have the greatest stake in your success, and then bring them in to set goals as a team? Ep 161161. Discover If You're Accidentally Diminishing the Talent Around You | Liz Wiseman

Are you multiplying or diminishing the people around you? After we released episode 145 with Liz Wiseman, author of New York Times bestseller Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, we received a lot of feedback from all of you. We all know that no one succeeds alone – but working with and leading other people isn’t easy, and we’re not taught how to do it in school. So for this episode, we brought Liz Wiseman back, but with a twist: instead of us interviewing her, she’s going to turn the tables on Geoff Woods and help him identify where he’s diminishing as a leader. Whether you own a business, are a leader in an organization, or are an employee, this is a valuable episode because it will help you gain clarity on where you could be doing a better job of showing up and how you are influencing the people around you. In this episode, you will learn... [8:00] How your strengths can end up diminishing others [19:35] What leaders can give their teams space and reign themselves in during meetings or conversations [28:35] How learning a few “back pocket questions” can help you multiply the people around you (and what these questions sound like) [35:40] What accidental diminishers can do to start intentionally multiplying & what employees or family members can say when they are being diminished [55:55] ONE thing accidental diminishers should understand and implement The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Where might you be accidentally diminishing? It’s not a bad thing to admit that you have diminishing tendencies – we all do! One of the three commitments of The ONE Thing is following the path of mastery; always focusing on how you can get just a little bit better in any area of your life. There are spaces where you are doing extraordinarily well, but there are also places where you’re still a student and opportunities to improve. So what is the ONE thing you can do that will make multiplying the people around you easier or unnecessary? Ep 160160. Avoiding 3 Critical Mistakes of Business Growth | Abe Shreve

Why is it that the majority of businesses fail? We see this all the time with, whether it's our members or the people that we do trainings with at a corporate level. Everybody always has the best of intentions in their career. Yet, they don't realize the subtle simple mistakes that they are making. And if they had the right person on the frontline of their business with them, coaching them, and guiding them, they would be able to avoid making the mistakes that ultimately lead to burnout. For over a year, you have heard us talk about the possibility of introducing The ONE Thing Coaching, a one-on-one coaching program based on the principles of The ONE Thing. A lot of you sent us emails saying you’d love that opportunity, but we hadn't earned the right to bring this program to market because we were missing a person. We found that person, Abe Shreve, and we’re excited for you to meet him in this episode. Over the last five years, he has personally led over 9000 independent coaching calls. He has had conversations with business owners from across all industries. And he has a unique perspective on what mistakes you may be making that will lead to burnout and, ultimately, to the loss of your business. If you are interested in exploring what it looks like to have a coach who can be there and guide you based on the principles of The ONE Thing, go to The1Thing.com/training. You'll see an option for The ONE Thing Coaching, and you can submit your interest there. In this episode, you will learn... [05:53] Mistake #1: Not lining up the dominoes [11:08] Mistake #2: Not learning to succeed through others [38:31] Mistake #3: Not creating a culture where accountability is the lifeblood of how we work and interact with each other The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: If after this episode, you find yourself saying, "Wow, that seems like a lot,” remember that the path to getting everything you want starts by getting just ONE thing at a time. So what's the one thing you can do such that by doing it, everything else would be easier or unnecessary? Maybe you need to complete your GPS for the upcoming year. Maybe you need to go through and do a 411 with your team. Maybe you need to look at your hiring practices. Maybe you need to sit down with your team in front of a white board and really ask, "What is our culture in one single descriptive word? What does it come down to?" Whatever you choose, we hope that you are the type of person who actually takes action. And if you believe what Abe says, that a great place to start would be to get a coach, please go to The1Thing.com/training. You'll see an option there for ONE Thing coaching. Ep 159159. How to Set Goals With Your Significant Other if They're Not a Goal Setter | Jake & Alyx Dreyfuss

When you’re setting goals, do you ask yourself who in your life directly contributes to whether or not you achieve that goal? No one succeeds alone – but most people try to. One of the biggest mistakes we see people making is that they set goals by themselves, then they struggle throughout the year because the most important people in their life aren’t on the same page. Our guests Jake and Alyx Dreyfuss blocked off time for their first couples goal-setting retreat last year. In this episode, Jake and Alyx share the discussions they had, the changes that have occurred over the past year, and what they’re doing differently for this upcoming year. If you want to learn more about what it looks like to go on your own goal-setting retreat, go to the1thing.com/event and check out what we’re doing for The ONE Thing Couples Goal-Setting Retreat in Nov. 2018. In this episode, you will learn... [12:30] How you know when you aren’t on the same page with the people close to you. [17:00] What has surprised Jake & Alyx since their goal-setting retreat. [24:15] Why you should set goals with not just your significant other, but also your business partner and/or team. [26:50] What you should avoid when you’re setting goals. [27:45] How to set goals when you aren’t a natural goal setter (and why you should). The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: The ONE Thing is the surprisingly simple truth behind extraordinary results – it’s not the surprisingly easy truth. In this episode, you hear how challenging the process of setting goals together is... and you also hear how much it helps. Who is riding shotgun with you who you can sit down with and have the deep conversations, which you might have been avoiding up until now? It’s not about negotiating for whose goal is going to win. It’s about understanding what the other person wants and asking how you can help them get it. What would be possible in your life if you made a goal-setting retreat a yearly ritual? Ep 156156. It’s Life or Death Without Time Blocking | A True Story with Steven Gendel

What if getting your priorities done was literally a matter of life and death? We know that living The ONE Thing isn’t easy. Surprisingly simple, yes – but certainly not easy. Whether you’re an employee, an entrepreneur, or a stay-at-home parent, there are always things that pop up and try to pull you away from your most important priorities. Most of us have the luxury of being able to accept that and try to do better tomorrow... but what if you didn’t have that opportunity? That’s the reality for our guest Steven Gendel, whose son was born prematurely and weighing under two pounds. Over the past 19 years of his life, he has had 50 neurosurgeries and there isn’t a day that goes by without a moment where he almost dies. So today we have a conversation about what it looks like to not only thrive in your career but quit your corporate job to build four businesses, while every single day knowing that one of the people who matter most to you may not actually make it through the day – a situation that forces you to get extreme clarity on your priorities. In this episode, you will learn... [6:05] How you can go from living to thriving, even in a dire situation [9:30] What you need to do so that your businesses can grow even if you have to spend six months in a hospital [31:50] Why you need to empower the people in your world (and how to do that) The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: One of the things that impress us most about Steven is that he always shows up with a smile on his face – there’s a peace about him, and you have to wonder if it’s because he wakes up every day with true clarity on what matters most. Based on what you heard today, what can you start doing differently? What are the things you’re doing today that you would stop doing, at the drop of a dime, if something happened to the people who matter most to you? Are any of your so-called priorities, in reality, just distractions? What’s the ONE thing that you can do that will make everything else easier or unnecessary? Ep 155155. Customer Loyalty | How Lady Gaga Turns Fans Into Fanatics with @JackieHuba

What is the ONE thing to focus on for business growth? We believe that ONE thing is customer loyalty – so, as we scale our business, that means our ONE thing is engaging with people like you. So we’ve been asking ourselves, how do we form a deeper, more meaningful relationship with every single one of you so that, ultimately, you become a raving fan and get a level of mastery on the content so that you can turn around and empower the people in your world? While we were asking these questions, Jay walked over to his bookshelf and pulled out a book. It was Monster Loyalty: How Lady Gaga Turns Followers Into Fanatics by today’s guest Jackie Huba, and it’s transforming the way we look at our business. So today we’re going to show you how Lady Gaga was able to build this passionate fan base and what lessons you can take and apply in your businesses. In this episode, you will learn... [4:35] What is loyalty? [11:35] How do you identify your one percenters? [26:30] How can you can become part of the community around your business and give them something to talk about? The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: So, after listening to this episode, you've been armed with a foundation for growth. Now, are you willing to go on the journey to becoming a master of building customer loyalty? If so, what habits do you or your business have to acquire that would make engaging those one percenters easier or unnecessary? Is it getting clear and focusing on your one percenters? Leading with your values? Building a community of those one percenters? Or generating something to talk about? Look at those four points and contrast them or compare them to what you're focusing on in your business right now. Are you focusing on the ONE thing that matters most? When we look at our business, that lead domino, that if we continue to knock that down over time will lead to extraordinary results, is you. If you see there is an opportunity but you’re struggling to come up with ideas for how to capitalize on it, one thing you can do first is read through Jackie’s book, Monster Loyalty, and write down 10 ways that you can implement each chapter. When you do that, you end up with this mind bank of things that you can do that will make building customer loyalty easier or unnecessary. We did this and it’s been extremely helpful. And if you genuinely feel like you are one percenters for The ONE Thing, please e-mail [email protected] because we're always asking, what are we doing that's actually creating that type of engagement? And we would love to have a conversation. Ep 154154. How to Have Fierce Conversations That Can Change Your Entire Business | Susan Scott

If you want to live an extraordinary life, you have to master something – but it only has to be ONE thing. For many of us, mastering the ability to communicate with other people, or connect with others, is the ONE thing that will make everything else easier or unnecessary. Today, we sit down with someone who has mastered the art of asking great questions: Susan Scott, the author of Fierce Conversations. This episode is so meaningful for us, and we think it will mean just as much for you because Susan models a Fierce Conversation live. If you put yourself in our shoes and answer each question honestly, you will experience how profound having Fierce Conversations can be, and what will be possible if you invite more conversations like these into your relationships. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Identify a relationship in your life that is not where you want it to be; a relationship that matters to you, and is hurting. If the conversation IS the relationship, what do your conversations have to look like moving forward so that you can feel better about where that relationship is? Remember, this talk doesn't have to be intense or negative – it can come from a place of love, and it can be delivered with candor and care. In this episode you will learn... [12:30] What the 4 goals of a Fierce Conversation are. [19:00] ONE thing that many business owners are doing that ruins their businesses (and their relationships). [25:15] the ONE thing you can do to make connecting on a deeper level easier. [36:30] What a Fierce Conversation sounds like. [1:00:30] How you can leverage Fierce Conversations in your life. Ep 153153. Put Your Family First & Build a Great Business | Robert Fischer

Have you ever thought, “I just need more work-life balance?” Have you ever hustled so hard that life didn’t feel fulfilling because... well, you didn’t really have a life outside of your business? If we fast forward to the end of our lives, will any of us think to ourselves, “I wish I just spent five more hours in the office?” No! For most of us, the things we’ll reflect on are the moments that we shared with the people who matter most. If you’re struggling to strike a counterbalance between building a great career and having great relationships with the people who matter most, this episode is for you. We examine a case study of what it looks like to be really clear that family and relationships are your ONE thing, put them first, and still build a great business. In this episode, you will learn... [7:50] Creating a family-first organization [15:40] How you can set up boundaries to separate office time from family time [18:10] What it means to leave a legacy with your business [22:50] How to transition from being present in your business to present with your family [28:10] The ONE thing you can do to make striking a work-life counterbalance easier or unnecessary The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: At the end of the day, there are the people who matter most to you – and then there’s everyone else. So are you going to wake up every day serving the people who matter most to you or sacrificing them for everyone else? When we pull it back like that, it seems really simple. But we’ve been taught to be so career-focused and so driven to achieve extraordinary results that it’s easy to lose sight of what matters most. So what is the ONE thing from this episode you can do that will make putting your family first, while also building a great business, easier or unnecessary? AWESOME FREE RESOURCES FOR YOU! Ep 151151. Becoming UFC's Voice of the Octagon with Bruce Buffer

What does it mean to be successful? In this episode, we’re going to explore the value of failure – when paired with persistence – with Bruce Buffer, who you may know as UFC’s Voice of the Octagon. In this episode, you will learn... Ep 150150. Hal Elrod on The Miracle Morning and Doing What Matters Most

Can you imagine if all of your dreams, inspirations, and the things you wanted out of life were stripped away from you in a moment? It makes you really consider what matters most. Our guest actually did die at the age of 20, after being hit head-on by a drunk driver at 70 MPH. After six days in a coma, he woke up only to be told he’d never walk again. Well, not only can this person walk – he’s run a 52-mile ultramarathon, built a successful business, and wrote an incredible bestselling book: The Miracle Morning. Then, after being diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2016 and given a grim prognosis, he’s done the impossible again. Today you are going to discover the story of how Hal Elrod formed a powerful morning routine that set him up for success, how the idea of a Miracle Morning has impacted the lives of over 500,000 people, and how he maintains clarity on what matters most. In this episode, you will learn... [4:20] What The Miracle Morning is & how can it help you achieve your goals? [9:10] The lead domino that led to Hal’s success. [11:15] How you can shift from a mindset of success to a mindset of fulfillment (and why it matters). [26:55] How to align your actions with your true priorities. [30:15] What The Miracle Equation is & how it will help you achieve extraordinary results. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: If you’re listening to this show, that means you’re probably growth-minded and want more out of life, specifically as it pertains to your time. The challenge is how often are we furthering our education in something that is not our number one priority? I love the story Hal shares about how, once he got clarity that family was truly what mattered most, he went down a road to reading and furthering his education on how to be a better father or husband before he earned the right to develop his education on running a business. It’s so simple, but how many of us do it? Not easy – but simple. What’s the ONE simple action that you’re not taking today that, if you started taking it, would make everything else easier or unnecessary in your life? Ep 146146. Stimulating Creativity to Achieve Extraordinary Results | Todd Henry

Are you limiting the possibilities of anyone in your world? We believe that leadership is teaching people how to think so that they can get what they need when they need it – but too often, we limit those around us, especially when it comes to creativity. However, achieving extraordinary results, even if you’re not an artist or don’t consider yourself creative, requires a level of unfettered creativity. Todd Henry, host of The Accidental Creative, joins this episode to share how we can stop putting up these roadblocks and start allowing the people around us to do their most important – and most creative – work. In this episode, you will learn... [6:20] How you can support your people’s creativity by helping them protect their time. [10:00] How you can maintain trust with your team (or, more accurately, avoid losing trust). [21:20] What you can do to create challenges that stimulate creativity, for yourself and your team. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Look at your normal day, look at how you have been investing your time, and ask yourself: Am I currently setting myself up to get my most important work done and create my best work? Based on that, what’s the ONE thing you can do that will make creating extraordinary work easier or unnecessary? You might come up with a BIG answer. If that’s the case, keep asking yourself the clarifying question – what’s the ONE thing I can do that will make achieving that easier or unnecessary – until you’ve identified a single action, a two-inch domino, that you CAN knock down every day. Can you imagine a habit so powerful that it was worth investing $100,000,000 to acquire it? Our guest, Keith Cunningham, joins us for a two-part interview because he literally paid that tuition – but he learned a lot from losing $100MM, and built habits that allowed him to make that money back, plus some. Now Keith is traveling around the world teaching others how they can acquire this ONE habit that will make everything else in their business life easier or unnecessary, and he wrote a book sharing what he learned titled The Road Less Stupid. Ep 141141. The Family Office: How Multi-Millionaires Think About Wealth Creation | Richard C. Wilson

How do you think about creating wealth… or do you even think about it? In this episode, we reveal the mindset required to create a net worth of $20M, $100M, or even more. The people we are talking about today did not inherit their money – they just think differently about wealth creation. To teach us about this mindset, we are talking to Richard C. Wilson, CEO of the Family Office Club Association, the largest community in the industry with offices that manage in excess of $1 Trillion in Assets Under Management. In this episode, you will learn... [9:30] The strategic habits that can make your someday vision a reality. [13:50] How to identify what you should be focusing on learning. [23:00] What Richard’s clients focus on to create a long-term competitive advantage. [26:50] Where you should invest your funds. [32:30] The ONE thing you can do, over time, to make an executive team opportunity easier or unnecessary. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: The people who achieve extraordinary financial success, in Richard’s experience, didn’t get there through diversification – they got there through focus and planning. They understood what the big, long-term goal was and they made sure their actions, every day, were aligned and in integrity with their vision. Of everything you heard in this episode, what’s the ONE thing you can do to make achieving that lifestyle easier or unnecessary? Think BIG, and then go really small. Ep 140140. Do What Matters Most & Get More Free Time | Jeff Sanders

Are you doing the same thing every day, working hard, without actually living your purpose? Sometimes it takes something catastrophic to compel us to do something different, or to take an action that we previously didn’t have the confidence to take. For Jeff Sanders, host of The 5 AM Miracle Podcast, it took being hospitalized for him to realize that most of the things on his calendar simply didn’t matter. Jeff completely changed the way he manages his time, and the experience prompted him write a book called The Free Time Formula. In this episode, Jeff shares how he schedules his time, how he chooses what to invest his time in, and what you can do to begin taking action today. In this episode you will learn... [4:40] How to look at your calendar in an entirely new way. [7:00] Why you don’t need to (and shouldn’t) fill every time block on your schedule with a task. [14:10] How you can optimize your time by utilizing your strengths. [18:00] How to begin auditing your time & identifying the changes you need to make. [20:40] The ONE thing that makes everything easier or unnecessary, when it comes to acting in order of priority. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: We urge you to take Jeff’s story as an opportunity to pause and reflect; if you continue to do what you have been doing, every day for five years, what will your life look like? Are you living the life you want to be living? If you want to make a change, first look at the seven circles: your spirituality, physical health, personal life, relationships, jobs, business, and finances. Now choose just one area and ask the focusing question: What is the smallest domino that you CAN knock over that will make everything else easier or unnecessary, in your world? Keep asking that question until the answer is something so small, so doable, that it almost seems too easy. Think big, but go small – and prove to yourself that you can knock that lead domino down today. Ep 139139. Creating Work Life Counter-Balance Requires Delegation & a Change in Mindset | Dan Quiggle

Today, we want to take you on a journey. We host this podcast to show you new ways to live The ONE Thing at a higher level, and one of the ways that we learn best is through story, or through other people’s experiences. Our guest, Dan Quiggle, was well on his way to building a successful business – but the number of hours he worked prevented him from doing the thing that mattered most: being a father who was present for his daughter. While you listen to Dan’s story, assess where you are in your journey: Are you striking the right work-life counterbalance for you? Are you holding onto tasks that are limiting your impact? What does it mean to show up for the people who matter most in your life? In this episode you will learn... [2:20] Why work-life balance doesn’t exist. [6:40] How you can build a business that scales without you. [10:30] The ONE thing that separates successful people from extraordinary leaders. [14:05] How you can practice work-life presence. [19:20] What you can do to transition from work mode to family mode (and vice versa). The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: What was the ONE thing from this episode that resonated most with you? For us, it was when Dan asked, “Who’s getting the worst of you?” Many of us consider being a parent or spouse as the more important role in our lives, but too often, we give so much energy to work that our family gets the worst of us. So what’s the ONE thing you can do to show up as best version of yourself in the role that is most important to you? Continue to ask yourself that question until you narrow it down to one, specific, measurable activity that you CAN do. (You can get your own 66-Day Challenge Calendar at the1thing.com/66daychallenge.) Ep 138138. Are you Networking or NOT Working? Jordan Harbinger

Imagine each of the seven circles of your life – spirituality, physical health, personal life, relationships, your job, your business, and your finances – is a ball, and you are juggling them. What happens if you drop the relationship ball? If you drop that ball, it breaks. We find that people often spend so much time focusing on their job, business, and finances that they, ultimately, end up neglecting their relationships, spirituality, health, and personal life. Jordan Harbinger, titular host of The Jordan Harbinger Show, has been on a decades-long journey learning how to form powerful relationships and network in a way that brings results – as opposed to what a lot of us do, which is NOT working. In this episode, Jordan is going to share how you can really distinguish yourself and form relationships that matter. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: What is the ONE thing from this episode that will make everything else easier or unnecessary, when it comes to your relationships? We really resonated with the idea that you need to stand out – you just have to be a little bit different. And this doesn’t even have to be a big thing! When everyone else is just clicking Like on Facebook, are you willing to actually send a text? And if you aren’t willing to do those things… are the quality of your relationships reflect of what you’re putting in? Remember: build the well before you need to use it; bring value to other people FIRST, not expecting anything in return. In this episode you will learn... [9:00] The 20% work that leads to 80% of results, when it comes to forming the right relationships. [16:05] How you can become the type of person who brings value to others. [19:05] Why only focusing on your particular skill set, or on what you already know, is hugely limiting. [27:00] What you need to know about making an ask. [31:50] The ONE thing that most people currently aren’t doing that can completely change everything. [36:00] The most important people you should be connecting with. Ep 137137. Don't Sacrifice Your Family For Your Business | John Lamerton

Have you ever sacrificed your family time, your health, or your spiritual life, for your career? Today you’re going to hear about someone who fell into that trap: John Lamerton thought that getting everything he wanted required adding more things into his world, and as a result he ended up working 100 hours a week and sacrificing time with his family – until he got a massive wake-up call in the form of a newborn son. You’re going to discover what led to John’s mindset shift, and how subtracting, simplifying, and focusing allowed him to go from working 100-hour weeks to 25-hour weeks – all while making more money, experiencing less stress, and spending more time with his family. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Our biggest takeaway from this episode is doing less – not more. Sometimes, the things you like doing, and even the things that make you feel productive (or maybe just busy), aren’t the things that are going to make you effective – and they detract from the ONE thing that actually matters most. What can you do, today, to get more clarity on the things that you’re currently saying yes to that you should consider saying no to? And are you willing to block out time on your calendar to figure it out – possibly even saying NO to something less important in the process? In this episode you will learn... [7:10] How you can cut hours from your work week (while getting more done). [13:00] How you can start intentionally choosing power habits and stop accidentally falling into habits. Ep 136136. How Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright Lives The ONE Thing

Are you empowering the people on your team? Anyone can be a leader, and a good leader empowers the people around them to take control of their time and focus on their priorities. On this episode, we have an opportunity to discover how The ONE Thing has been implemented by the #1 highest ranking official in the U.S. Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant Kaleth O. Wright, to more effectively lead his team, manage his time, and protect this country. In this episode you will learn... [5:55] How to build models & systems to manage your time (and your team) more effectively. [8:30] How you can introduce The ONE Thing to your team & empower them to take more control over their time. [10:40] Why you sometimes need to say NO (and how you can do it gracefully). [18:55] The ONE lesson you need to learn about leadership. [24:00] How a good morning routine can transform how you show up in life. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: In this interview, Chief Master Sergeant Wright demonstrated the idea of moving from E to P – or when you stop relying on your natural abilities and start implementing models and systems to help you focus on your priorities. So it’s time to get hyper clear: What are your priorities? What earns the right to show up at your desk? What models and systems can you implement to ensure everyone in your team is focusing on their top priorities? When you consider these ideas, what is the ONE thing you can do today that will make everything else easier or unnecessary? We’d love to know what you’re implementing from this episode! Ep 135135. How to Honor Your Time Blocks without Getting Distracted (Part 2)

Have you ever blocked out time on your calendar for something that really mattered, and then life got in the way? We know it happens to us, and has happened, at some point, to all of the 1,700 people who attended the keynote that we are sharing in this episode. This is part two of a two-part series on time blocking secrets. In part one, we discussed some of the changes you can make in your life to move forward on the road to mastery. In this episode, we answer questions about what people just like you are struggling with when it comes to time blocking. In this episode you will learn... [2:45] How you can create an environment that supports your goals. [14:45] Why saying yes to yourself first (and no to everyone else) will give you time to say yes to everyone else, later. [23:30] How you can protect your time by setting expectations with the people around you. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: How will you endure the monotony of success? We mentioned in the last episode that this is a road to mastery, and that means you have to adopt the mindset of a student. You have to take action to learn, every day, and every day you will fail – and you will make progress. We haven’t mastered this habit either, and we all struggle with this. But we are trying to do better and improve, every single day, and we have learned a lot that we’d like to share with you. [27:50] The 3 commitments you need to make if you want to achieve extraordinary results. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: If you’re here, you are already on the road to mastery. We hope you take this opportunity to look internally and evaluate yourself: where are you currently along the road to mastery? Ep 133133. A Purpose-Driven Company Solving a Big Problem | Andela Co-Founder & President Christina Sass

When it comes to The ONE Thing, the tip of the iceberg is your results, or your profit – but what lies underneath the surface, supporting those results? We can’t get the right results if we don’t take the right actions, we can’t choose the right actions if we don’t know what our priorities are, and we can’t know what your priorities are if we don’t have clarity on our purpose. That’s why we’re sharing a conversation with a woman who is completely driven by purpose, and we encourage you to listen for three themes: when purpose comes into the picture, when she starts narrowing her focus, and how she moves from Entrepreneurial to Purposeful. Christina Sass is the Co-Founder & President of Andela, which CNN called “the startup that’s harder to get into than Harvard.” They are on a mission to train 100,000 world-class software developers in Africa to bridge the divide between U.S. and African tech sectors, and it’s remarkable what they’ve been able to accomplish in just a few years. In this episode you will learn... [8:00] How you can solve a BIG problem by focusing on ONE action. [18:30] What it looks like to narrow your focus and say no to everything else. [24:05] How you can start moving from E to P. [30:50] Why (and how) anyone can start shifting the culture in an organization. [34:50] ONE thing you can do to find more success in business. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: We love what Christina says at the end of this conversation: “Purpose is a currency all on its own. Find your purpose, and the means to attack it will follow.” Are you clear about what your purpose is, or do you have a general sense of what it might be? The path to discovering your purpose starts by getting on the path. So how much time, every week, are you intentionally pausing to think about what your purpose might be? If you invest zero time, you won’t have any clarity. If you want to get on the path, we want to help. Click here to take your first step by joining the Living Your ONE Thing community. Ep 132132. ONE Thing Leaders Can Do to Create Extraordinary Results | Mark C. Crowley

Do you know how to show up as the most effective leader that you possibly can? We know that many of you are leaders – business owners, entrepreneurs, or employees in a management role – who are out to make a big change in the world, and you want to influence the people around you to create a big impact. But how? To find out, we sat down to speak with Mark C. Crowley, the author of Lead from the Heart: Transformational Leadership for the 21st Century. In this episode you will learn... [6:10] The science behind why leading from the heart is so successful in business. [10:00] What you can do to bring more caring into your leadership. [17:00] The ONE thing you can do to create hockey stick-shaped growth in your leadership ability. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Who are the people in your life that you really care about? Do you have clarity – real clarity – on why they’re doing what they’re doing, and what they’re working towards? If the answer to that question is no, how much time do you think it would take to ask them and find out? And what would become possible if you ask everyone you care about (which should include everyone you manage) that question? We think asking that question is the lead domino that will allow you to unleash exponential growth in your leadership ability. Ep 131131. Have Dazzling Conversations, Network with Purpose, & Captivate Those Around You | Vanessa Van Edwards

When you go to social events, are you networking or are you not working? We’ve been there – going to networking events and masterminds without really getting or giving any value in the experiences that we share with others. But with a little bit of knowledge, we can stop wasting time and start networking with purpose. To help us, we sit down with a human behavior expert: Vanessa Van Edwards, the lead investigator at her research lab, Science of People, and the bestselling author of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People. In this episode you will learn... [2:05] How you can have dazzling conversations (and what that means). [5:10] The biggest lie we’re told about people skills and charisma. [8:20] How you can identify what kind of person you are and set yourself up for networking success. [13:45] What you can do to create a better first impression. [19:40] The ONE thing you can do right now to develop more meaningful relationships. The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: We love what Vanessa said about being a highlighter – when you introduce one person to another person, and you really rave about what makes them exceptional, it leaves a lasting impression. And when you make this a habit, it forces you to listen more intently because, if you know you will have to recall information about them, you will listen with purpose.
