Without thinking, we look away and divert our eyes from pain, suffering and things that make us uncomfortable. When you live for yourself, your irresponsibility becomes someone else’s responsibility. When you live irresponsibly as a Christian, you live as a hypocrite. In 1 John 2:6, Jesus says that those who claim to follow him should live as he lives. It’s a challenging message, but still the one we are called to as Christians. Have you ever let time be the reason you aren’t doing something? Maybe you want to make a difference, achieve a goal or effect change but at the end of the day you’re too tired. If you’re running through life from meeting to meeting, appointment to appointment or task to task, you’re likely mentally, spiritually and emotionally exhausted. It is possible to do all the things you want to do, by stepping into divine moments - kairos moments that become stories worth telling. If you’re feeling hopeless or helpless, hope is really not a conspiracy. God does want to be with you, and His presence is available to you right now. It’s fully actualized in the context of relationship, which is why you can have faith on your own but it you can only live out the love of Jesus with other people. God may not be who you think he is. He isn’t waiting to catch you doing something wrong so he can punish you. He doesn’t use guilt and shame to control your behavior. He isn’t even solely concerned with your morality and goodness. If any of those sound untrue to you, it may be time for you to quit on your version of God. Why does it seem like the closer people get to God, the less grace they extend to others? Sometimes the most spiritual people extend the least amount of grace. As we continue with Everyday People, Pastor Naeem uses the story of Jonah to show us the grace we’ve been given and the grace we need to give others.
