This is Episode 122 and our guest is Langhorne Slim. Y'all, this is a special episode on several levels. I am so excited to bring you my intimate conversation with Slim but first we are going to do something a little different. Our good friends Jordan Foley and The Wheelhouse have been hard at work on a new album and you are about to hear the premiere of the first single from that record called "Loners." Then, you will hear our conversation with Langhorne Slim. Langhorne Slim is a singer and songwriter from Pennsylvania whose work has been lauded by The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and many others. Conan O'Brien is among his obsessive fans. Slim has a fascinating mind and sweet spirit that he channels into some of the most beautiful songwriting of his generation. We caught up with Langhorne Slim at the incredible Orange Blossom Revue festival in Lake Wales, FL, in December of 2022. Slim's music has meant a lot to my dear friend and collaborator Jenn Ross who was fortunately covering the festival with me and was able to sit in on the conversation. He is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Memphis whose career has meant so much to so many. His latest record is on a ton of best of 2022 lists. It's called When I Go I Ghost and I think it is the best thing he has done. The record features such guests as Garrison Starr, Jason Isbell, and Brian Fallon, and Eric Slick among others. It is a special piece of art and I am grateful for the opportunity to pick Cory's brain about how this wonderful album came together.

This is Episode 118 and our guest is Isaac Gibson. Isaac is the principal songwriter and lead singer for the band 49 Winchester. The band's unique brand of country music has taken them to the Ryman stage, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and in front of growing crowds. Rolling Stone has described Gibson as possessing a chill-inducing howl that's not far off from Chris Stapleton's! Y'all, the opportunities and hype are well deserved. This band is for real. 49 Winchester's latest record is called Fortune Favors the Bold and you will no doubt find it on plenty of 2022 year-end lists for very good reason. We caught up with Isaac via Zoom while he was off the road and back home in Virginia.

This is Episode 116 and our guest is Elizabeth Moen. Elizabeth is a singer and songwriter whose latest record Wherever You Aren't will be released on November 11, 2022. Elizabeth is smart, thoughtful, and a talented songwriter. Y'all, this is the kind of record that grabs you on the first listen and does not let go. We caught up with Elizabeth via Zoom while she was on tour singing in Kevin Morby's band. We talk about that experience, the making of her outstanding new record, growing up in small town Iowa, and so much more.

This is Episode 115 and our guests are Bobby Houck and Hank Futch of the band Blue Dogs. Blue Dogs has been around since the late 1980s, y'all. My introduction to the band came with 1999s Letters From Round O. Letters from Round O brought the band to a broader, dedicated audience. The guys slowed down a little in the 2000s. They kept making music and playing shows but limited touring and studio work for a while until this year's Sadler Vaden produced record called Big Dreamers. Y'all I have been a fan of Blue Dogs for twenty plus years and Big Dreamers is my favorite thing they have done. Hank and Bobby are the kind of guess I envisioned when we started The Marinade and this conversation displays why that is the case.

To paraphrase BJ Barham, Michael McDermott has come out of the darkness to be the light. His illustrious career goes back to the late 80s. For many folks he is the best songwriter you've never heard of. For others he is the voice of multiple generations. His most recent record St. Paul's Boulevard is my favorite thing he has done. McDermott builds a world and trusts himself and his collaborators to guide but not lead the listener. It's an immersive experience much like this conversation with the man himself.

Michaela Anne is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Nashville, TN. Her fifth full length record Oh To Be That Free was released on June 10th of 2022 on Yep Roc Records and it is a gorgeous, powerful collection of songs. Y'all, this may be the most personal and emotional conversation we have recorded on The Marinade and I am so grateful for Michaela's presence and openness.

This is the lost Episode 50 and our guest is our host Jason Earle. One of Jason's earliest thought partners for what would become The Marinade was his good friend Peter Haroldson. Peter is a kind, hilarious, and wildly intelligent guy. When The Marinade first began, the idea of getting to episode number 50 seemed like some far off abstraction. Would anyone even care about this thing? Well, thankfully a lot of y'all do care and before long episode 50 was a reality. The plan as suggested by Peter was that episode 50 would be an interview of the host. But, at the time of number 50 Peter had moved to Minnesota and then the world shut down due to the COVID-19 crisis. Finally, in October of 2021, Jason flew to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota and sat down on the other side of the desk to answer questions from his friend. Special thanks to our good friend Patrick Hagerman whose tune Minneapolis is serving as the soundtrack to this episode. John Doe is our guest for Episode 111. John Doe is a singer, songwriter, poet, actor, and multi-instrumentalist perhaps best known as co-founder of the seminal 1980s LA punk band X. The influence of X on generations of musicians can not be overstated. John has gone on to release wonderful solo records including his latest Fables in a Foreign Land which was released on May 20, 2022.

This is Episode 110 and our guest for the second time is Matt Woods. Matt is a singer and songwriter from East Tennessee who earlier this year completed a residence here in central Florida that he called Songs Matter where he and songwriters around the Sunshine State sat down to swap songs and talk about process. Since we last spoke he also released an outstanding EP called Mornings After, which could be my favorite of his wonderful catalog, and a re-release of his debut record the Matt Woods Manifesto which recently celebrated ten years in the world. Matt was the last Marinade interview we did just before the world shut down from the COVID-19 crisis. That week was my first time meeting him but he treated me like an old friend from day one. Matt Woods is a hell of a songwriter and a kind soul.

The Marinade with Jason Earle, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process, welcomes Ryan Sollee. Ryan is the principal singer and songwriter for The Builders and the Butchers. The Builders and the Butchers came into my life at a very formative time with their debut self-titled record in 2007. I was in my 20s, trying to figure out what adult me would look like- a little angsty, disillusioned yet hopeful, and curious about the world. Ryan Sollee's tunes seemed to capture what I was feeling. All these years later, The Builders and the Butchers have a wonderful new record of foot-stomping anthems called Hell & High Water, which was released on May 6th, 2022. This conversation is such a thrill, y'all.

Izaak Opatz is singer, songwriter, leather worker, and avid outdoorsman from Montana whose latest record Extra Medium was just released. I have had the pleasure of listening to Extra Medium for a while now and am crazy about it. Opatz is a one-of-a-kind songwriter whose unique skills shine on this record. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Chinook Wind" from Extra Medium.

John Medeski is nothing short of a legend. He broke down barriers as one third of the revolutionary jazz trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood, bridged gaps as part of The Word with North Mississippi All Stars and Robert Randolph, and worked with luminaries in music across genre. Medeski, Martin, and Wood Medeski's latest project is Saint Disruption, a collaboration with musician, scientist, and folk healer Jeff Firewalker Schmitt. Schmitt and Medeski first met in the Amazon jungle where Medeski was seeking relief from debilitating cluster headaches. Saint Disruption's debut album Rose in the Oblivion was released on April 8, 2021 and their latest release, a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" featuring Warren Haynes on guitar just dropped. I have been a fan of Medeski, Martin, and Wood for almost twenty years so this is a dream opportunity.

Stephen Deusner is the author of the wonderful biography about The Drive-by Truckers called Where the Devil Don't Stay. The Truckers may be my favorite band of all time and this book captures the essence of their appeal and importance. Stephen's work regularly appears in Uncut, No Depression, Pitchfork, the Bluegrass Situation, Bandcamp Daily, American Songwriter, and many other publications. The music you are hearing is I Wanna Hold You from Jay Gonzalez's record Back to the Hive. In addition to his work on keys and guitars in Drive-by Truckers, Jay makes beautiful solo music.

Joe Garner, better known as The Kernal, crashes into The Marinade. This is the second time we have had the pleasure of sitting down with The Kernal, last time had to be on Zoom as most folks were not yet back to touring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This go 'round we got to sit side-by-side in my Mazda SUV the day after Kern and the boys crushed their set at Tuffy's Music Box in Sanford, FL. The Kernal's latest record Listen to the Blood is the culmination of an idea Kern has been working on for several years, more about that in the conversation.

This is Episode 104 and our guest is Kristen Arnett. Kristen is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels Mostly Dead Things and her most recent book With Teeth. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Guernica, McSweeneys, and many more. Kristen has been on my dream guest list since the day I finished Mostly Dead Things and I am so honored to bring y'all this conversation. Her 2021 record Outside Child is nominated for three Grammys including Roots Performance, Roots Song, and Americana Album of the Year. This recognition has been a long time in the making. Outside Child is Allison's first solo record after two decades of making music with Po' Girls, Birds of Chicago, and Our Native Daughters. The result is one of my favorite records in a long time. It was such an honor to sit down with Allison for what was a magical conversation.
