S1 Ep 209Paul Kelly | The Marinade Episode 209

E

Paul Kelly is a bona fide legend. The singer and songwriter from Australia who has been writing and performing songs that dive deep into the human condition as well as anyone for over for decades. His song "How To Make Gravy" is so iconic it has spawned an unoffical holidy in Australia, Gravy Day, and a feature film starring Hugo Weaving. Kelly has written a memoir, racked up shelves worth of Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, and is likely among your favorite songwriter's favorite songwriters. His latest album Seventy is a masterful collection of songs which includes "Rita Wrote a Letter," which is the sequel to 1992's "How To Make Gravy." Y'all, I have worn out this CD in my car and it is an enormous honor to bring you my conversation with Paul Kelly.

S1 Ep 208Jano Rix | The Marinade Episode 208

E

Jano is one third of one of my favorite bands of all time The Wood Brothers. I have had the pleasure of seeing the band countless times and the honor of interviewing lead singer Oliver Wood on three separate occasions. The Wood Brothers are woven into the fabric of The Marinade and I am so grateful for the opportunities I've had to spread the word about their music. Jano is also one half of Rix, the father/son duo with his dad Luther. Legacy Vol. 1 is available wherever you listen to music. The fusion of Jano and Luther (who played in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and with Leonard Cohen among others) is a fertile alchemy. We caught up with Jano on The Wood Brothers' tour bus ahead of their show at The Plaza Live just down the street from me in Orlando, FL. Ric Robertson opened the show. Jordan Foley accompanied me. Twas a beautiful night.

E

Welcome to The Marinade, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff. This is Episode 207 and our guest is Brian Dunne. Brian is a singer and songwriter from New York whose latest record Clams Casino was one of my favorites of 2025 and remains a constant companion. Rolling Stone called Clams Casino "an indie-rock, Paul Simon-evoking gem of a record." Yep. That's about right. Brian is an insightful guy and one hell of a songwriter. This conversation covers a lot of ground and I am so grateful to bring it to you. Support The Marinade on Patreon: https://patreon.com/marinadepodcast

S1 Ep 203Chris Otepka (of Troubled Hubble) | The Marinade Episode 203

E

Chris Otepka of Troubled Hubble. Troubled Hubble is a new-to-me band that just reissued their wonderful 2005 album Making Beds in a Burning House. This conversation came about because of Jim Hanke whose work on his podcast Vinyl Emergency is an inspiration to me and The Marinade. When Jim speaks, I listen and I am so glad I did. Troubled Hubble is one of those bands that would have been among my favorites had they graced my ears at the time of Making Beds in a Burning House's release. A great sense of melody. A little nerdy. A band that slalom's through genre. Exactly the kind of thing I was devouring in 2005. Better late than never. I'm grateful this record came into my life and for the opportunity to connect with Chris.

E

This is Episode 202 and our guest is Joelton Mayfield. Joelton is a singer and songwriter from small-town central Texas who's now based in Nashville, TN. Last year, Joelton toured with John Moreland, the Mountain Goats, Susto, Parker Millsap, and others. This year he played with Steve Earle and went on to release one of my favorite records of the year called Crowd Pleaser. Joelton can flat write. This album covers a ton of emotional ground and leaves the listener thrilled and wanting more.

Kirby Baby is the nom de plume of Kirby Brown, a singer and songwriter who is going through a huge transition with his latest release Inside Man. Inside Man a collection of existential musings with a blend of indie rock that is a huge pivot from the Americana songs Kirby has been known for. This record was the medicine I didn't know I needed and it is an honor to bring you my conversation with Kirby Baby. E

Evan Barber is a singer and songwriter from Southwest Georgia, who grew up playing southern rock and jam band songs with his best friends. His most recent record Until The Thunder is a personal collection of roots music that finds Barber painting pictures of life and love in The South. I caught up with Evan via Zoom after becoming inspired by his live set at the legendary historic Grant's Lounge in downtown Macon, GA, earlier this year. S1 Ep 197Jesse Daniel Edwards Returns | The Marinade Episode 197

E

Jesse Daniel Edwards is a songwriter from California who now makes his home in Nashville. Edwards has lived an incredible life. He has gone from growing up without television or internet, to leaving home at 16, to tour managing for the likes of Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, and Morrissey(!) and making unique, fascinating records. This year he has released not one, not two, but three wonderful collections of songs- two EPs and a full length. I highly recommend all three. This conversation went in so many different directions, y'all. I am grateful for Jesse as a thought partner and for the art he shares with the world. S1 Ep 196Chris Margolin | The Marinade Episode 196

E

Chris Margolin is a singer, songwriter, educator, father, and husband from the Pacific Northwest. The man is an inspiration. Middle school teacher by day, rock n' roller by night- Chris has been educating the youth of America for over twenty years and moving crowds by night for thirty. Despite a demanding day job, and the responsibilities of having a family, he maintains a prolific recording schedule that includes his latest wonderful offering David St., which finds Margolin and his band the Contraband collaborating to touch on country, grunge, 90s pop, and so much more goodness! This was a long time in the making. Chris and I had not met until this moment but it feels we have known each other for years as we have long interacted on Twitter. It was one of those episodes that felt like hangs with an old friend and it is my pleasure to bring you, my conversation with Chris Margolin.
