S1 Ep 209Paul Kelly | The Marinade Episode 209

E

Paul Kelly is a bona fide legend. The singer and songwriter from Australia who has been writing and performing songs that dive deep into the human condition as well as anyone for over for decades. His song "How To Make Gravy" is so iconic it has spawned an unoffical holidy in Australia, Gravy Day, and a feature film starring Hugo Weaving. Kelly has written a memoir, racked up shelves worth of Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, and is likely among your favorite songwriter's favorite songwriters. His latest album Seventy is a masterful collection of songs which includes "Rita Wrote a Letter," which is the sequel to 1992's "How To Make Gravy." Y'all, I have worn out this CD in my car and it is an enormous honor to bring you my conversation with Paul Kelly.

S1 Ep 208Jano Rix | The Marinade Episode 208

E

Jano is one third of one of my favorite bands of all time The Wood Brothers. I have had the pleasure of seeing the band countless times and the honor of interviewing lead singer Oliver Wood on three separate occasions. The Wood Brothers are woven into the fabric of The Marinade and I am so grateful for the opportunities I've had to spread the word about their music. Jano is also one half of Rix, the father/son duo with his dad Luther. Legacy Vol. 1 is available wherever you listen to music. The fusion of Jano and Luther (who played in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and with Leonard Cohen among others) is a fertile alchemy. We caught up with Jano on The Wood Brothers' tour bus ahead of their show at The Plaza Live just down the street from me in Orlando, FL. Ric Robertson opened the show. Jordan Foley accompanied me. Twas a beautiful night.

E

Welcome to The Marinade, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff. This is Episode 207 and our guest is Brian Dunne. Brian is a singer and songwriter from New York whose latest record Clams Casino was one of my favorites of 2025 and remains a constant companion. Rolling Stone called Clams Casino "an indie-rock, Paul Simon-evoking gem of a record." Yep. That's about right. Brian is an insightful guy and one hell of a songwriter. This conversation covers a lot of ground and I am so grateful to bring it to you. Support The Marinade on Patreon: https://patreon.com/marinadepodcast

S1 Ep 203Chris Otepka (of Troubled Hubble) | The Marinade Episode 203

E

Chris Otepka of Troubled Hubble. Troubled Hubble is a new-to-me band that just reissued their wonderful 2005 album Making Beds in a Burning House. This conversation came about because of Jim Hanke whose work on his podcast Vinyl Emergency is an inspiration to me and The Marinade. When Jim speaks, I listen and I am so glad I did. Troubled Hubble is one of those bands that would have been among my favorites had they graced my ears at the time of Making Beds in a Burning House's release. A great sense of melody. A little nerdy. A band that slalom's through genre. Exactly the kind of thing I was devouring in 2005. Better late than never. I'm grateful this record came into my life and for the opportunity to connect with Chris.

This is Episode 202 and our guest is Joelton Mayfield. Joelton is a singer and songwriter from small-town central Texas who's now based in Nashville, TN. Last year, Joelton toured with John Moreland, the Mountain Goats, Susto, Parker Millsap, and others. This year he played with Steve Earle and went on to release one of my favorite records of the year called Crowd Pleaser. Joelton can flat write. Jesse Daniel Edwards is a songwriter from California who now makes his home in Nashville. Edwards has lived an incredible life. He has gone from growing up without television or internet, to leaving home at 16, to tour managing for the likes of Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, and Morrissey(!) and making unique, fascinating records. This year he has released not one, not two, but three wonderful collections of songs- two EPs and a full length. I highly recommend all three. S1 Ep 196Chris Margolin | The Marinade Episode 196

E

Chris Margolin is a singer, songwriter, educator, father, and husband from the Pacific Northwest. The man is an inspiration. Middle school teacher by day, rock n' roller by night- Chris has been educating the youth of America for over twenty years and moving crowds by night for thirty. Despite a demanding day job, and the responsibilities of having a family, he maintains a prolific recording schedule that includes his latest wonderful offering David St., which finds Margolin and his band the Contraband collaborating to touch on country, grunge, 90s pop, and so much more goodness! This was a long time in the making. Chris and I had not met until this moment but it feels we have known each other for years as we have long interacted on Twitter. S1 Ep 194Crumbsnatchers | The Marinade Episode 194

E

Guetts and Sma from the band Crumbsnatchers are our guests for Episode 194. Crumbsnatchers hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and boasts a singular sound and a live show that compels devotion. Guetts, the frontman and principal songwriter, has lived a fascinating life whose experiences translate to records that remind of your favorite bands while defying comparison. We were supposed to catch up with Crumbsnatchers during Bonnaroo 2025, but the weather and the powers that be had other designs. Bonnaroo was cancelled after a magical day and a half during which I had the pleasure of seeing the band twice in a twenty-four hour period. Thankfully, our paths were destined to connect just a couple days later in Nashville. Guetts invited me over to his house outside Music City and we had a blast talking about the origins of the band, the importance of Bonnaroo to their development, impromptu parties at a certain campground's pool, and so much more! S1 Ep 193Emily Scott Robinson | The Marinade Episode 193

E

Emily Scott Robinson is our guest for Episode 193 of The Marinade! NPR has said of her, "With her pure, bracing vocal set against an achingly somber piano, Emily Scott Robinson doesn't marinate in misery so much as summon the strength to venture up to a precipice and stand at "the edge of something wild." Yep! That's Emily. She's a skilled songwriter who is dedicated to her craft, a powerhouse singer, and a really fun conversation partner! I have wanted to make this conversation happen for years and am so grateful for the opportunity. S1 Ep 192S.G. Goodman | The Marinade Episode 192

E

S.G. Goodman is a singer and songwriter from Hickman, KY, who now makes her home in Murray, KY. Her outstanding third album Planting By The Signs is available everywhere now. Goodman's music has been a constant in my life since her debut solo record Old Time Feeling dropped in 2020. She is a storyteller with few peers who blends soul, country, indie rock, blues- all the things, to create her signature sound. I have been wanting to have S.G. on the show for five years and it has now become a reality. We caught up via Zoom while I was staying at the KOA campground in Nashville, TN, during my Grounded Summer tour where I covered Bonnaroo and spent some time throughout the South. S1 Ep 191Preston Canavan | The Marinade Episode 191

E

Preston Canavan is a comedian from Winter Park, FL, who is one of my favorites doing it right now. I have the pleasure of getting to see him perform at my favorite third space in the world, Barley and Vine Biergarten just steps away from my home. Every time I have seen Preston perform, he has left me doubled over laughing. This conversation was no exception. Y'all, I am sometimes a dumb dumb. I am learning how to use fancy new equipment gifted by one of our wonderful Patreon patrons Seth Gill. Aaaand, I didn't record the first conversation with Preston. He came over on a Thursday, we caught lightning in a bottle, and it only exists as a cell phone video. Have no fear, dear listener. First, I published the video in its entirety - bloopers and all - on our Patreon. You can watch that by subscribing or you can pay for it a la carte. I promise it's worth the watch. Second, Preston being the sweetheart he is, agreed to come over a second time and we had another incredible conversation. I know I say this is one of my favorites all the time, but this is one of my all time favorites. Preston is a bright light and I am so grateful for these conversations. S1 Ep 190Kelsey Waldon Returns | The Marinade Episode 190

E

Kelsey Waldon has established herself as an artist firmly in tune with herself as a writer yet not content with resting on her sterling reputation. With each record her pen has further flowered, culminating in this instance with an invigorating album that pays homage to country music's past while forging toward a confessional, self-reflective, vulnerable brand of tunes that stands out even among many of her esteemed peers. Given that she was introduced to a broader audience when she signed with the late, legendary John Prine's Oh Boy Records in 2019, one would be forgiven for thinking Kelsey is relatively new to the music scene. On the contrary, she has paid her dues and the years of honing her craft jump out on Every Ghost. S1 Ep 188Scott Sharrard (of Little Feat) | The Marinade Episode 188

E

Little Feat's legend goes back to 1969! The band has produced ubiquitous hits like "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin'." Their influence stretches across generations. They have endured heartbreak, loss, and lineup changes but the core Little Feat sound has remained true since the beginning. S1 Ep 187Matt Andersen | The Marinade Episode 187

E

Matt Andersen is a singer and songwriter from New Brunswick, Canada whose career has spanned over twenty years and somehow, despite his work being very much in my wheelhouse, I am just now learning about it all. This man's voice, his playing, his writing- it all shines on each of his records and especially so on his new record The Hammer & The Rose. The Hammer & The Rose was released on April 25, 2025 and it is squarely on my 2025 superlatives list. Before I get to my conversation with Matt, I want to thank three new Patreon patrons! Bob Beatty, Seth Gill, and Tom Romito have all joined our Patreon community lately. Patreon.com/marinadepodcast if you would like to support The Marinade and enjoy some bonus content. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Tonight Belongs To You" from Matt's new album The Hammer & The Rose. S1 Ep 185Steve Poltz | The Marinade Episode 185

E

Steve Poltz is a singer and songwriter originally from Nova Scotia, raised in Southern California, and now making his home in Nashville. He made a name for himself first with his band The Rugburns and later, more famously, as co-writer with Jewel including the mega hit "You Were Meant For Me." If you are of a certain age, you will remember the video for that song. A spare room with Jewel playing guitar and a dude dressed like 1996. That dude is Steve Poltz himself! Fifteen-year-old me would be losing his mind. Hell, 44-year-old me is losing his mind at this opportunity. Steve's latest record Stardust & Satellites is outstanding! We recorded this episode after Steve's enchanting set during Suwannee Spring Reunion 2025 at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Everyone, it is my great honor to bring you my conversation with Steve Poltz! (The song you are hearing in this episode is "It's Baseball Season" from Steve's excellent record Stardust & Satellites.) S1 Ep 184Grey DeLisle | The Marinade Episode 184

E

Grey DeLisle is an acclaimed actor and Grammy-winning musician whose latest record is an immediate contender for my favorite of the year. Where does one begin to introduce a powerhouse like Grey DeLisle? For decades she was the voice of Daphne in the Scooby Doo series. She plays Azula in Avatar The Last Airbender. Her music has been compared to Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. Just an all around badass and very cool person. S1 Ep 179BJ Barham Again and Again | The Marinade Episode 179

E

BJ Barham is the creative force behind one of my all time favorite bands American Aquarium. BJ was on my short list of dream guests when I started this thing back in 2016 and I was thrilled that he agreed to be my very first Marinade guest! American Aquarium released perhaps my favorite of their albums The Fear of Standing Still earlier this year. BJ is a man who is dedicated to his craft and each album showcases the growth he and his band have attained. He is an inspiration and I am honored to have gotten to know him a little over the years. S1 Ep 177Daryl Hance Returns | The Marinade Episode 177

E

Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years. I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn't been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I've long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it's the Florida boy in me. Maybe it's the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl's work and I am ready for more and more. Daryl's latest record is called "Devil's Millhopper," it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com.
