If We Don't Reject What We Don't Agree With Are We Enabling It?
In my previous episode I talked with Fox TV personality, Kat Timpf about binary thinking. Right, wrong, black, and white. And our cultural propensity to take a differing opinion or view or belief someone else has, judge them completely for it, and reject them. Kat experiences this frequently when people find out she works for Fox. They label and judge her and distance themselves. Even though they could possibly agree on many other things. They may even in truth, like her. But since she’s labeled with the Fox emblem, they reject her. The thing is, I understand this. I’ve long struggled with the concept of grace. I get the idea, but giving someone grace for doing or representing something I feel may be harming them or someone else, feels really hard. I fear if I am gracious, it will seem like I am ok with what or who they are, and I may not be. So how do you address this? Let’s talk for a minute. Kat Timpf’s new book on this topic is I Used To Like You Until…:How Binary Thinking Divides Us. How To Keep Issues From Dividing Us w/ Kat Timpf
My perspective is that we are the most divided culture ever right now. Every issue is a trigger for everyone and you are required to stand on one side or the other or be deemed negligent or ignorant. And if someone aligns with a differing side or perspective, you need to distance yourself from them. To me it feels like we’ve fallen into the most strict, religious culture ever. Everyone has their set of beliefs according to the religion of their perspective, and if you believe differently, you are judged and sentenced to crucifixion. I think it’s toxic and poisoning our society. So a book came across my desk from someone…I would not normally have on my show. But doing so, I feel, beautifully represented the point. Why is it a threat to sit and have a discussion with someone who may have differing values and perspectives? Who lives a different lifestyle? My guest is Kat Timpf. Kat is a writer, comedian, and libertarian commentator. She’s currently the co-panelist of “Gutfeld!” on Fox News weeknights at 10 p.m. and a Fox News analyst. She’s also the author of the New York Times bestseller "You Can’t Joke About That: Why Everything is Funny, Nothing is Sacred, and We’re All in This Together." Her new book is what got my attention, I Used To Like You Until…:How Binary Thinking Divides Us. Kat’s life and lifestyle couldn’t be further from my own. But I found our views on cultural division are very similar, and I was honored to sit and have this discussion with her. I think there is a lot for all of us to learn. What Comprises A Good Life w/ Jonathan Fields
Talking about a good life feels like speaking to success. What makes it up? And we generally say that we must define this for ourselves. Agreed. However, my guest has been studying this for a long, long time, and to have a good life he’s found it boils down to three buckets. Categories if you will. Jonathan Fields has come to be known as “the good life guy.” He has a wildly popular podcast called The Good Life Project. I’ve had Jonathan on my show twice and often reference his profile that looks at what makes us come alive in our work, which you can find at sparketype.com. This conversation happened years ago when I sat down with Jonathan just to dig into what he’s found really makes up a good life. He had written a book called The Good Life Project that really put him on the map. I also just dug into Jonathan himself and what got him to the point to embrace this movement and become the leader he’s become and is becoming to so many people pursuing a good life. I found the conversation incredibly intriguing and believe it will give you a lot to think about in regards to how you are living, loving and leading. 20 Daily Activities To Boost Your Mental Health
In my show with TJ Powers, talking through his book, The DOSE Effect: Optimize Your Brain & Body By Boosting Your Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins, he lists out 20 activities to address all those brain chemicals, and I want to give it to you, whether you buy the book or not. If you can add just one to your day, you’ve at least done that to advocate for your mental well being and overall capacity. I’m thinking about looking at it every morning, then going through it as a checklist in the evening to see how I did. Let’s talk through it now. Experiencing Your Life Requires Depth - Not Speed
In our culture today, the concept of “slowing down” has little attraction. We are enamored with speed. So instead of trying to sell “slowing down” let’s look at what the point of questioning our speed is. Imagine going to hike the Grand Canyon. Or another nearby attraction, Las Vegas. And imagine if your goal is speed. Do you want to just get through either of them as fast as you can? Or would you rather explore and experience what they have to offer? Now come back to our lives in general. Forget the idea of slowing down. I’m questioning our societal quest for tech and AI and travel to continually speed us up. What is the point? Is it working? Are you getting happier as a result? Let’s talk. My muse for this discussion is from my recent conversation with TJ Powers and the message in his new book, The DOSE Effect: Optimize Your Brain & Body By Boosting Your Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. Find TJ on Instagram @tjpower. In our culture today, the concept of “slowing down” has little attraction. We are enamored with speed. Let's See A Video Of Your Daily Viewing Habits To Discern Your Attention Spending
I’m a very visual guy, so I often think of visual analogies to help me better conceptualize a concept. So imagine you are watching a video tape of yourself, sped up to show all your activities for a day. With special attention on how much time you are looking at screens and what you are looking at. How many times do you look at your phone? How many times on your computer are you viewing social media or entertainment or even just random information or news updates? Let’s call it non-productive viewing. Do you resemble a contemplative, thoughtful, focused person? Or an addicted squirrel? I’m going to bet you are far more squirrel-like than you’d expect. I believe I am, and my recent talk with TJ Powers about how we build up and deplete our brain chemicals really has me considering this. Let’s talk through it a bit. TJ Powers’ new book is my muse, The DOSE Effect: Optimize Your Brain & Body By Boosting Your Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins. Find him on Instagram @tjpower. How To Save Up Brain Chemicals To Fuel Your Most Important Efforts w/ TJ Powers
Sometimes an analogy comes along that just clicks. It takes information you may have heard before and helps drive it home. That is what happened with my guest in this show regarding the brain chemicals that fuel our drive and motive. TJ POWER is a neuroscientist and innovator in the area of mental health. His work focuses on providing easy-to-adopt, scientifically backed teachings that empower people to take action towards healthier lifestyles. He has a really big following and when I got his book, I understood why. The book is, The DOSE Effect: Optimize Your Brain & Body By Boosting Your Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins, and in it, TJs explanations helped me see how I am increasing or depleting the brain chemicals I rely on to do the important work in my life. Most of us have heard much about dopamine, but do we really understand how we increase and decrease it? Then also, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. Now the point isn’t to understand each one fluently, but to understand how they help us and what we are doing in our everyday lives that help or hurt them. I was most interested in what I learned about how I’m depleting some of these chemicals early in the day, and then later it feels like I’m lacking drive and motivation. I trust in listening to this conversation, you will be able to understand what these chemicals do for us and like me, now understand how to far better leverage them to do the things you truly want to do. Can You Really Revamp Your Life & Why Would You w/ Rich Roll
In the world of personal development you hear a lot of stories of people making huge changes. Rags to riches, zero to hero, and massive life turn-arounds. It makes for a great story, but is it relevant for us? In 2003 I was at a critical juncture in my life where I'd bit off more than I could chew. I abruptly quit my cycling career and business, moved my wife and three kids cross country and started a new life. It was needed. Since then, most changes have not been quite so massive. We tend to look at the circumstances to guide, if not force us to action. But now I pay attention to where my heart is. With that in mind, I bring you a story that I feel will help you consider where you are. Rich Roll. The guys is famous for his story, and today, his gigantic podcast, the Rich Roll show. Years back I sat down with Rich to dig into his story. Here are the highlights; Rich was 39 years old with degrees from Stanford and Cornell. He was a corporate lawyer, married with three kids living in a dream house he'd built. Then one evening he finds himself at home, it's 2am and he's spent hours watching TV and eating junk food and he's winded after walking up eight steps in his home. An image of his wife and daughter at her wedding in the future, and he wasn't there. He'd died from ill health. He looked in the mirror and saw a fat, out of shape, very unhealthy man, depressed, self-destructive and utterly disconnected from who he was and what he wanted to be. He said, “In that precise moment, I was overcome with the profound knowledge, not that I needed to change, but that I was WILLING to change. And I understood that any true or lasting lifestyle change would require rigor, specificity, and accountability. Vague notions of “eating better” or maybe “going to the gym more often” just weren’t going to work.” And, the rest you're about to hear more about. He became an ultra endurance athlete and now is a brand, in and of himself, of healthy living and life transformation. Find him on your podcast player, just search for Rich Roll. How Much Do We Really Need A Community
Anytime a question like this is posed, you really expect that it’s bait to pull you in and emphasize in this case, how we really, massively need community. I’m not going to do that. I’m quite an introvert and I don’t often enjoy groups of people. I want to look at what community can look like for different people. My muse continues to be Ian Morgan Cron from his new book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. The 12 Steps came from AA, Alcoholics Anonymous, which I view as one of the most powerful and valuable communities ever. But I don’t see many communities that function as it does. I will cite some others however. The point though is, asking what the value really is, or isn’t, for each of us to consider. What Voids Are We Trying To Fill
A couple episodes ago in my conversation with Ian Morgan Cron on addiction and the benefits of 12 steps, he started off talking about the “great human ache” we all feel and are trying to address. Ian is a man of faith, actually an Episcopal priest along with all his other roles. For him the ache is an aspect of separation from God. That is his faith. It may not be yours. It may not be mine. But in my own experience as a human, and in walking with so many, the concept of an underlying ache, interests me. It resonates some, but I also question it. So that’s this short episode…some thoughts and questions about the great human ache or what else may be troubling us beneath the surface. Ian’s new book again is The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. Are We Addicted & How Do You Know
I’ve often heard addiction debated, as to what really defines it. I typed into a search engine, “How do you define addiction” and this is what it showed; Addiction is when you have a strong physical or psychological need or urge to do something or use something. It is a dependence on a substance or activity even if you know that it causes you harm. It can impact your daily life. I don’t want to be flippant, but from that definition I’d say every one of us is on a spectrum of addiction. I don’t look at it as addicted or not, but how addicted to our vices are we. I think about this often, as I really, really like liking what I like. I love loving my pleasures. But I also concern myself with going too far. I’ll get candid with you here and follow in the footsteps of my guest in the previous episode, Ian Morgan Cron, as he shared about his ongoing struggles in his new book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. The 12 Steps Benefits For All Of Humanity w/ Ian Morgan Cron
Most everyone has heard of the twelve steps concept associated with Alcoholics Anonymous. I bring it here for all of us, whether you think you are addicted to anything or not, which is an arguable claim for anyone. Ian Morgan Cron is the bestselling author of The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery, which has sold over one million copies. He’s a psychotherapist, Enneagram teacher, Episcopal priest, and the host of the popular podcast Typology. I had Ian on the show before to talk about the message in his book, The Story of You: An Enneagram Journey to Becoming Your True Self. Since he was on my show, Ian, this leader of so many, relapsed. It’s not an incredibly sordid story, but he has a past history of substance abuse. All these years later, he found himself reliant on some substances and questioning himself in significant ways. In this episode we talk through his story. We talk about what Ian calls, “the great human ache.” We discuss what addiction is, the need we all have for community to keep us on a healthy path, and how the 12 steps are relevant for anyone seeking well-being. Ian breaks down how the 12 steps covers making peace with God, making peace with self, making peace with others and cultivating a healthy and fulfilling life. Ian has captured all this in a brand new book, The Fix: How the Twelve Steps Offer a Surprising Path of Transformation for the Well-Adjusted, the Down-and-Out, and Everyone In Between. I hope you’ll join us in this conversation. Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. How To Be Free From The Many Masks We Wear w/ Lewis Howes
I don’t think any of us chooses to wear a mask. But creating and wearing them is taught to us from early on. And in some cases, it’s a necessity to survive. Now here we are. Are we wearing a mask? More than one? I’m bringing an incredible show back from the archives. Lewis Howes is the host of the podcast, The School of Greatness, one of the biggest podcasts alive at this point. Lewis is a big, strapping looking guy. A former pro ball player. He looks like the definition of “all-American.” But few know that he began life with a learning disability, which led to being alone and bullied in school, to being sexually abused as a child. Years back he took on the topic of masculinity. Lewis’ research looked at the majority of stress, anxiety, and pressure men feel is due to the masks they wear. Now, if you’ll listen in, I feel the concept pertains very much to women too. Think of masks as certain personas we fall or buy into, and get trapped in. Then live from in a limiting life construct. Do you have any stress or anxiety? Do you feel any pressure? Would you like to be free of it? Let’s look at the masks you may find out you are wearing. You can connect with Lewis at “The School of Greatness” podcast, which you’ll find at the top of the podcast charts. You can get his book, The Mask of Masculinity, wherever you buy books, and find Lewis anywhere at Lewis Howes. Everything We Do Is Simply An Effort To Create A Feeling Of Well-Being
With the big question and quest of what do we actually want for our lives, it strikes me that it is all just an effort to feel a certain way. We strive and strive for this and for that and to me it seems like a great mind game. I am not discounting the things we want to achieve, but I’m questioning some of what we do as a means to an end. I have found myself going after things I think I want. Then when I ask myself why, and why again, I realize it’s often to generate a feeling. And then I ask myself, do I really need to pursue whatever it is in order to feel the way I want to feel? Let’s talk about it. The Books We Love vs The Books That Have Actually Changed Our Lives
I recently posted a question on Facebook. The question was, “What is a book you have read, where you can honestly look back and say that after you read it, you made a tangible life-change for the better? What is the book, and what was the change?” About 75 people shared around 60 books. They could easily testify to the knowledge they received from the books, but very few could specify the change they made as a result. I have some thoughts on this. What Would You Do If All Obstacles Were Gone
I find that people are far more clear on what keeps them from having what they want, than being clear on what they actually want. The job, the kids, the money, the chores, the upbringing, the government, the economy, the devil, and an infinite list of culprits are to blame for keeping people down. For stealing their dreams. For keeping them from what they want. However I find that if you ask the question, “OK, imagine you have 10 million in the bank. You have everyone’s support in your life. Now, what would you do? What would you do with your days?” Most people are very unclear. Which to me belies that many people actually want the grind and the responsibilities because without them, they don’t know themselves and they have little idea what they would do to occupy their time. The grind might as well be the purpose if we have no other clear purpose. Unearthing The Mystery Of Knowing What You Really Want w/ Tracey Gee
The catalyst for writing my book, What Drives You, was realizing what I most wanted for my children, was for them to know what they truly want, and wrap their lives around it. From this inspiration I realized that while I had always been driven, I had often been unclear what I wanted, and what I was driving toward. As time goes on, I continue to perceive that truly, clearly knowing what one wants is one of the most elusive things of life. And getting clarity on one wants, may just be the ultimate success. So in this show, I bring on another expert on discovering what you want. Tracey Gee has also devoted herself to this quest for helping people understand what they truly, authentically want. Tracey is a leadership coach and consultant who has done extensive research in workshops and personal coaching with individuals seeking to discover what they want. She has a new book that caught my attention, The Magic of Knowing What You Want: A Practical Guide to Unearthing the Wisdom of Your Desires. We sat down to discuss how unaware people are of what they really want, and then talked through methodologies Tracey uses to help people, that I am very intrigued by. You can find Tracey’s new book, The Magic of Knowing What You Want, at Amazon, and find her at traceygee.me. Boundaries, Leadership, & Influence with the legendary Dr Henry Cloud
I get to have deep conversations with people who have had great influence in the lives of so many people. Dr Henry Cloud became synonymous with the term boundaries after his groundbreaking book, Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life, and has influenced millions of people in doing just that, taking control of their lives. I was a mere 21 years old when Dr Cloud’s Boundaries book published and wouldn’t become aware of boundaries for another 21 years, and wouldn’t truly implement them in my life till much later. Today, 33 years later, as I record this, the book is ranked #256. Incredible. I got the chance to sit down with him and Tom Ziglar a few years ago when Henry brought his focus and insight into leadership and influence. We began talking about boundaries, then got into leadership and influence. Influence is one of my favorite topics, as we all want influence. Without it, we can’t help anyone. I think you’ll get great insight from our discussion. You can find all Dr Cloud has to offer at his website, drcloud.com. And I don’t know anyone who would not benefit from reading his book on Boundaries. Never Quit The Destination But You May Need To Quit Many Methods Of Getting There
In the industry of self-improvement and personal and professional development, we are all familiar with the concept of not quitting. Staying committed. But in my experience, personally and in working with so many other aspiring people, we very often confuse the meaning of staying committed and not quitting. Here is a quick analogy: the Superbowl is coming up soon. Each team is committed to getting to the end zone and scoring. That is what they stay committed to. They don’t quit striving for it. But to get there they run plays. Imagine if they ran a play and it didn’t work. But somebody was yelling, “Hey, don’t quit! Stay committed to the plan and run that same play again!” So they do, and it doesn’t work again. But, don’t quit! So they run it again. Hold on. The plan is not the play. The plan is getting to the endzone. If that play doesn’t work, try a different play. So in your life, what is the end goal, result, or destination? The plan is to get there. Stay committed. Don’t quit. But you may need to try a lot of methods to get there. Let’s break it down a bit more. And this wraps up my series with world record mountain climber Jenn Drummond as my muse. Are You Modeling A Life Others (like your kids) Would Want To Emulate
My recent conversation with epic mountain climber Jenn Drummond, and my recent time with all my children has me again focused on the life I’ve emulated to others. I have much in my life I’m proud of, but I’ve also spent many, many years just grinding things out. I chose to have seven kids and adopt two more. Most people respond to that with respect and as if I’ve done something valiant. Maybe I have, maybe I haven’t. But what my kids have seen as a result is a parent that is really busy. I went through a long period of life where I didn’t play. I didn’t do leisure. I didn’t “hang out.” I was productive. One, it was how I fed my self image. Two, it was fairly necessary with up to nine kids at home. I never asked myself what I was modeling for my kids. I ask myself that now, and like Jenn, I’ve altered my life accordingly. Let’s talk about it. Find Jenn Drummond at the Seek Your Next Summit podcast and check out her new book, Break Proof: 7 Strategies To Build Resilience and Achieve Your Life Goals. What Is Significant To You Is All That Matters
In yesterday’s episode I was with Jenn Drummond, world-record mountain climber, and talked about her story of a near life-ending car wreck that changed her perspective on life and got her looking at living a life of significance instead of just the so-called cultural success. So she went after the world’s biggest mountains. Why was that significant to her? I’d say…who cares? You might look at climbing mountains and wonder why that matters. And I’d say, it doesn’t. And doesn’t have to. The point is it means something to Jenn. And the bigger point of this episode is, what means something to you? What makes you feel proud of you? Is it a physical achievement like climbing mountains or running a 5k or marathon? Or is it learning to dance? Or learning a new language? Or volunteering somewhere? Or is it simply having a relationship and a family and working a solid job to pay the mortgage and be a solid member of your community? What is significant to you and helps you feel good about yourself is what matters. Let’s pursue it a little further. The Impact Of Living An Inspired Life w/ Jenn Drummond
Following is a story of…drive. It’s one of those stories of someone who turned their life around. But the story is not about them. It’s about you. My intent is that it gives you ideas, inspiration, and alters your perception to help you consider your own capacity. Not a capacity to do more. Most all of us need to do less. But do more of what matters. My guest is world-record mountain climber, entrepreneur and mom of seven, Jenn Drummond. In 2018 she had a car wreck that should have ended her life. But it didn’t. It did, however, change her paradigm on life. Her epiphany was, “You don’t get to choose when you leave this life, but you sure can choose how you live it.” Strengthened by this awareness, she set out to live in a more authentic and adventurous way. Inspired to climb a mountain for her birthday, her son raised the stakes by suggesting Mount Everest. She accepted the pursuit. During her training, her coach upped the ante and proposed that she go for a Guinness World Record and become the first woman to climb what is called the 7 second summits. The pursuit matched her desire to live a life of significance, not just success. Today, Jenn is a world record holder who elevates others to master their own summit in life. Jenn is Host of the Seek Your Next Summit podcast, who’s focused on inspiring others to go beyond success to a life of significance. Her new book and my muse for this conversation is, Break Proof: 7 Strategies To Build Resilience and Achieve Your Life Goals. Setting The Stage For The Punchline Of Your Life w/ comedian Michael Jr
Michael Jr. is a world class comedian who is not out to just get laughs. He is out to “give people the opportunity to laugh” and help set the stage for meaningful, purposeful content of the heart and soul. His personal mission is to “comedically inspire people to walk in their purpose.” He is accomplishing this in massive numbers while on stage with The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel, Comedy Central, Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday and Tedx Talks. He’s featured in the movie, “Selfie Dad.” So I connected with Michael Jr while he was on set somewhere and we had our conversation via phone, which I never do. So while the audio is clear, it’s via phone. I was also with renowned businessman and author, Mark Timm, who actually introduced me to Michael Jr.. In this conversation you will hear how Michael views that all of us, in living our lives, are preparing and setting the stage. For what? For the punchline of our lives. The deliverable. Without that, it is simply a life of always preparing but never coming to the table with an offering. So listen in to this interview and we believe you will be significantly inspired and empowered to do just that - Deliver. Connect with Michael at www.MichaelJR.com. Let Us Review Your Life To Find Your Purpose & What Lights You Up
We are literally going to stroll through your life, right here and now. I’m going to guide you from Dr Jordan Grumet’s new book, The Purpose Code: How To Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, And Leave A Lasting Legacy. You won’t likely find your purpose and what lights you up from this episode, maybe you will, but I’ll set you on the path. I’m going to pull some key points right out of his book for us to consider together, and try and trigger some thoughts that will give you clues for what lights you up. It may be a reminder, or give you a revelation. Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. What You DO Is Secondary To Who You BE While Doing It
Let me read that again, “What You Do Is Secondary To Who You Be While Doing It.” Think about the ramifications of this. It is entirely countercultural. Entirely. We glorify heroes and their victories, no matter the cost. Make a billion dollars? Win the Superbowl? Be famous? We glorify you and not only do we not seem to care, but we expect a lot of collateral damage. If you end your life, we’ll memorialize you even more. It’s an intriguing story to see meteoric success and supposed brilliance. But with my friends and those I respect, revere, and love most, I don’t really care much what they do. I care who they be. With and to me. I do not diss wealth, power, or fame. I just realize that even though I have exposure to people with great wealth, power, and fame, none of them become my close friends. They are off doing all it takes to have wealth, power, and fame. At this point, it exhausts me. I don’t even care to talk a lot about my work in and of itself. Or my parenting. If I’m with you, let’s be together. Sharing ideas and thoughts and experiences. Let’s dissect this just a bit… Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. What Lights You Up Is...Everything
In the last episode with Dr Jordan Grumet he differentiated small-p purpose from big-P purpose. And put most of the emphasis on small-p purpose, which is the daily activities that truly light you up. This is where I want to focus right now. What lights you up? What gives you energy? What inspires you? But don’t jump to your appetites. I imagine like you, I have a lot of things that are a pleasure for me. A dopamine hit. I appreciate those things greatly. But that’s not what we are talking about here. Think about it this way; you have apps on your phone that give you a dopamine hit. Social media or games. They are fine. But as you are playing them, you deplete the battery on your phone. What “lights up your phone” is plugging it in. So we’re looking for the things that you participate in that charge you up. What Jordan is leading us to is the massive value of these activities. Let’s help understand these better. You can find Jordan Grumet at the Earn & Invest Podcast and his new book and our muse here is The Purpose Code: How To Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, And Leave A Lasting Legacy. Purpose: You Are Thinking Of It Wrong w/Jordan Grumet
Purpose is one of the most overused topics in the self-improvement world. Everyone is talking about it. But as we look at the culture, we see more apathy and depression then ever. It’s similar to all the talk on being healthy and happy and we are just getting sicker and sadder. Why? With purpose, why are we constantly talking about it but not finding and experiencing it? I have with me, Jordan Grumet, and you are about to hear a very different look at what purpose is and how we can start experiencing much more of our purpose. Jordan is a medical doctor turned hospice doc. He is host of the Earn & Invest Podcast. He’s author of Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor’s Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life, the book that landed him here on my show the first time. Now he is back with a new book titled, The Purpose Code: How To Unlock Meaning, Maximize Happiness, And Leave A Lasting Legacy. And we breakdown and dissect purpose. What it is, why we are missing it as a culture, and I’ll give you what to me is the big takeaway, right here in the intro: you will find much more of your purpose in the day to day activities that light you up, than pursuing the big, grand purpose of saving the world. It’s a very different approach to purpose that I found to be much more relevant, realistic, and attainable. Case Study: Having My Emotional Intelligence Test Explained
Now it’s time to get literal and candid. Patrick Kilcarr again is Director of Georgetown University’s Center for Personal Development. He was my guest four episodes ago where we talked at a higher level about emotional intelligence. In this episode, we get granular. Patrick is a master trainer in emotional intelligence and certifies professionals to use the EQ-i2.0, rated as the most valid and reliable self-assessment of emotional intelligence. It assesses and evaluates the social and emotional competencies of individuals. This is not something available to the public. Patrick uses it as a professor, he administers it for business and academic organizations, and he uses it with his personal counseling clients. In this episode, he walks me through mine. As you will hear, he has never done this in a public setting and was fairly surprised I was willing. For disclosure, you will not be hearing how emotionally intelligent I am. You will hear how I am very high in one area, and Patrick showcasing how I am compensating for another area where I am very lacking. However, you are not here to learn about me. The point is for you to gain understanding of your own emotional propensities, and this is why we are publicly sharing what would otherwise be an individual therapy session. Patrick’s book is Leading An Emotionally Intelligent Life: Expanding Your Emotional Intelligence to Make Courageous Decisions and Transform Your Life. Dr. Kilcarr maintains a private practice in Washington, DC where he offers individual, couples, group, and family therapy. What Qualities Actually Equate To Human Intelligence
As we’ve been discussing the power and necessity of emotional intelligence, and I’ve posited the increasing value of it in relation to artificial intelligence, let's look at what human intelligence really is. I’ve never met anyone who did not want to think of themselves as intelligent. I find the label often attached to people who seem to have a wealth of knowledge they can deftly communicate. But as I discussed with artificial intelligence, if it’s only defined by knowledge, then the most intelligent person is now second best to a computer. Let us look at what would equate to us being more or less intelligent. Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. The Most Important Personal Connection
As we continue to discuss emotional intelligence and it being the root of human connection, I want to revisit the most important human connection that I was ignorant of, most of my life. In 2018 when I was host of The Ziglar Show, I had Robin Sharma for the first time. I used to do a segment called Habits & Values where I asked guests about their personal habits in the key areas of life. When I asked about Robin's habits and values in regards to relationships he surprised me by stating that the first value and priority in his relationships was the relationship he had with himself. This concept has never occurred to me. I viewed relationships as my relating to and with other people. Not myself. This brings us to today and my recent discussion with psychologist, professor, and director of Personal Development at Georgetown University, Patrick Kilcarr, one of the greatest experts I’ve experienced in regards to emotional intelligence. And the foundation of emotional intelligence that Patrick discusses in his book, Leading An Emotionally Intelligent Life, is human connection. And the first and most vital human connection is the connection we have with ourselves. And even as I say that and you may nod, do you really understand what that is? Because it proves very difficult for me. Leading An Emotionally Intelligent Life: Expanding Your Emotional Intelligence to Make Courageous Decisions and Transform Your Life. Why Your Emotions Are Quickly Becoming Your Greatest (and maybe only) Asset (or liability)
As I continue to research, learn, and strive to grow in emotional intelligence, I’ve wholly moved from looking at it as some touchy-feely concept to perceiving it as what separates humans from…everything else. In the last episode I talked with psychologist, professor, and director of Personal Development at Georgetown University, Patrick Kilcarr. In our discussion he talked much about emotional intelligence as our ability to connect. If we look at the growing power of artificial intelligence, this is what it can’t do. AI is adept at knowledge and learning and information and even innovation. As AI takes over, we humans will struggle to compete in those arenas. But AI is not sentient. It is not able to perceive or feel things. And as such, this seems to be our greatest asset as humans. Or our greatest liability if we are lacking. Is There A Bigger Flex Than Emotional Intelligence w/ Georgetown Professor Patrick Kilcarr
I spent a lifetime pursuing external performance. What we achieve athletically, entrepreneurially and even altruistically. I upheld the skill and ability of social awareness and reading and influencing people. I put a high value on controlling oneself. What I missed was knowing myself and understanding emotions. If I could go back, I’d trade in so much…maybe everything, for emotional intelligence. I find no greater understanding, wisdom, and power than that which comes from having high emotional intelligence. Which I don’t have. I still feel I’m in early training. And I’m ecstatic that I found my guest in this episode, Patrick Kilcarr. Patrick has been the Director of Georgetown University’s Center for Personal Development since 1999. He is a master trainer in emotional intelligence, certifying professionals to use the EQ-i2.0 (the most valid and reliable self-assessment of emotional intelligence) to assess and evaluate the social and emotional competencies of individuals in a variety of professional venues. All of Patrick’s work is directed toward strengthening the individual with respect to his/her innate talents and abilities. He has written extensively on emotional intelligence, addiction, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I found Patrick through a book he published in 2022, called Leading An Emotionally Intelligent Life: Expanding Your Emotional Intelligence to Make Courageous Decisions and Transform Your Life.. How To Accept Your Lack But Not Be Limited By It w/ Erik Weihenmayer
We all have areas where we are lacking. Weaknesses. I spent a long time trying to deny mine, and it limited my success. Many people recognize their lack, and let them limit their success. Then there are those who understand and accept where they are lacking, and adjust accordingly to not let themselves be limited by it. Case in point, Erik Weihenmayer. Erik is blind. Completely. He lacks the ability to see anything. He wasn’t born blind but lost his sight due to a rare eye disease at age of 13. There is nothing he can do about it. He accepted this, and adjusted accordingly. And then went on to climb Mt Everest. He has climbed all 7 of the world’s greatest Summits. He has kayaked the Grand Canyon. And he devoted his life to helping everyone overcome the lacks in their lives and do great things anyway. Tom Ziglar and I sat down with Erik to talk about his message and I’m bringing the show back to you from the archives to help you look to the coming New Year with more hope and possibility. Find Erik at ErikWeihenmayer.com and his book, No Barriers, is a great story of his rafting trip across the Grand Canyon and his message of overcoming. Work & Money: What Are Your Core Values
I’m wrapping up this series on core values in the categories of work and money. These are areas where I find we are very, very often…unclear. We think we work to make money and we make money so we can get the stuff we need. Do the things we want. And we are blind to any core values. And when we are blind, we find ourselves dissatisfied and frustrated with the poor results we achieve. So, let’s do a little drive for some clarity. Health/Wellness & Mental Health: What Are Your Core Values
Continuing on the topic of core values, let's now look at our health and wellness, and our mental health. Our mental state is what I like to focus on. My muse here is again, Robert Glazer, host of the Elevate podcast, who in our conversation two episodes ago, walked us through how he came to his core values and how the understanding and clarity directed his life to…what he wanted his life to be. And my focus in this series is gaining much more tangible, applicable understanding of what core values are, and what yours and mine specifically are. So we can achieve the results we desire. Spirituality & Relationships: What Are Your Core Values
As we talked about core values in the last episode with Robert Glazer, host of the Elevate podcast, I am taking the opportunity for all of us to consider our core values in the key areas of life. This is ultimately what I do in my book, What Drives You. The first two I’ll address in this episode are spirituality and relationships. I find a lot of people simply stating, “Yes, I value spirituality in my life.” And, “Yes, I value relationships, of course.” But spirituality and relationships are “what” and core values are “how.” I actually have a resource you can use to help you clarify your core values as we walk through the key areas of life that I think you will find truly helpful. Discover Your Core Values & Let Them Direct Your Life w/ Robert Glazer
My experience is most everyone thinks they know what their core values are, and in truth, very, very few do. And due to this we find ourselves doing things that are not fulfilling to us, and not engaged with what does fulfill us. Amidst that we grow…frustrated. Even to bitterness. Or fairly apathetic and just going through the grind. So I’ve brought someone on to the show to hear his story, of going from not understanding his core values, to getting very clear on them. I think it will help you better understand what core values really are and how to get clarity on yours…and adjust your life accordingly. Robert Glazer was walking aimlessly through school with his drive…disengaged. He decided to travel abroad and found his interest in business outside the school walls. He started learning the ropes, but it was still later that he found a desire to clarify his values. He spent six months getting clear on four, key core values. When he discovered them, he says the next 15 years were just fantastic. He founded a global marketing agency, started an inspirational newsletter called Friday Forward that reaches over 200,000 readers worldwide each week, and hit the #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller list as author of several books, including Elevate, and now is host of the Elevate Podcast. His show has many similar guests as I do here, and what drives them is a key focal point, but he gives more space to a business focus. As you enjoy the What Drives You podcast, I’m confident you’ll greatly appreciate Robert Glazer’s Elevate podcast. Story: How To Make Your Offering Compelling To The Perfect Person w/ Donald Miller
Everyone lives in their own story. They are a character in their story. If you want to offer them something, a product, a service, a message, your influence, a helping hand…whatever, you want to enter their story. The master of this is Donald Miller. I first met Don through his spiritually based memoirs. Don was a writer. An artist. Over time he sold zillions of books to people like me and along the way learned how to translate his gift of storywriting to the world of business. He started a company called Storyline and I attended his very first conference in Portland, OR with my Dad, brother, and uncle. Following is a conversation I had when Don had just released his book, Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen. In it he flips our perspective of how to promote what we have to offer to the public. It’s not about our product or service, it is about the customer. Don takes us through the structure of a good storyline and how we can, and must apply it to our offerings in this format; “A CHARACTER who wants something encounters a PROBLEM before they can get it. At the peak of their despair, a GUIDE steps into their lives, gives them a PLAN, and CALLS THEM TO ACTION. That action helps them avoid FAILURE and ends in SUCCESS.” You can find Don at storybrand.com Sign up for a $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to sign up for your FREE 60-day trial Get 20% off your first probiotic membership order at pendulumlife.com/drivesyou Go to cozyearth.com/driven and use code DRIVEN for an exclusive 40% discount Use my promo code WHATDRIVESYOU for 10% off on any CleanMyMac's subscription plans Learn more about your ad choices. End The Year Soft
I saw a post that said this, “Instead of finishing the year strong, why don’t we finish the year soft? Why don’t we finish the year restful and grateful for making it through yet another crazy cycle of earth?” It really stuck with me as I pondered the days ahead, through Christmas and the New Year. I thought about what would bless…myself. And then my family and friends. The holidays are happening and a new year is coming and what could I do to have a more memorable and meaningful time? And I had far less doing come to mind, and a lot more being. Drive with me to ponder it if you would. Identity: How Much Does Your Identity Dictate Your Decisions
Two episodes ago I had Talia Fox on the show. The turning point in her difficult life was realizing she had to let go of her identity, meaning, quit identifying as the girl who was a victim and had little opportunity or possibility. She did this. And from it she said, “I became obsessed with human and social behavior and how our identities shape our choices and our lives.” I think most of us never question our identity, we just assume we are who we are and that’s that. We can learn and do different things but who we be is set. We think of identity as fixed, like the color of your eyes. And yet I see us change our identities all the time and we don’t even realize it. If we conceptualize it better, we can open ourselves up to…a very expanded self. Choice: Having It And Wanting It Are Two Different Things
I’ve been intrigued by the sudden superhero concept for a long time. Peter Parker gets bitten by a spider and turns into spiderman. Bruce Banner gets exposed to radiation and turns into the Hulk. Some other guy or girl falls into a chemical vat and develops super powers. None of them chose those things to happen. But in our daily lives, seldom do specific and acute things happen to us like that. In most cases, we have choices to make, and I find that in seemingly hard circumstances, we’d rather there was just one, forced circumstance. Choosing between what looks like challenging options all around can overwhelm us. My muse for this topic is the guest from the previous episode, Talia Fox, author of The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits To Transform How You Live And Lead. The beginning of her book tells the story of her crying in a stairwell while holding the baby she is a single parent to, feeling at the end of her rope. After the sobbing subsided it just hit her that, “Something has to change.” And she changed it. But it brings up this issue of choice and how it feels when we feel backed in a corner. Choosing To Exist Differently In The World w/ Talia Fox
I have a powerful story of drive for you. One that starts with tears and today is an impressive lists of stats. Let’s start with the impressive list. Talia Fox is a leadership strategist. She holds an M.Ed. in counseling psychology from Howard University and she is a Harvard University Fellow. With her extensive background in psychology and education she assists leaders in developing successful strategies for complex missions, ranging from defense systems to healthcare initiatives. As CEO of KUSI Global, Inc., Talia helps organizations like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Harvard University, Transunion, the National Institutes of Health, Howard University, and the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs maximize human potential by leveraging strategic intelligence and helps individuals and organizations foster connected cultures and promote conscious equity. Now Talia has a new book titled, The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits To Transform How You Live And Lead. But where we start in our conversation is Talia as a single mom, holding onto her baby and crying in a stairwell in her apartment building. At the end of her rope. And that is where she resolved to not let her circumstances decide her fate and to quit identifying as a lacking and struggling young woman. Here is what Talia says, “I decided to choose a different way of existing in the world. People can often be completely absorbed by their problems, she said. They don’t jump out of bed, they drag themselves through feeling sad, tired, broken and disappointed. I started asking myself, what does this situation need from me today to be most successful? I became conscious how my choices impacted my outcomes. I became obsessed with human and social behavior and how our identities shape our choices and our lives. I was struck by how the seemingly small choices I made had the biggest impact on my mental well being. Sometimes veering off the well-trodden path of others and choosing a different path can lead to life-altering decisions. This is the story friends. This will be a good ride. No Hacks: Doing The Work w/ Tom Bilyeu
This is a story of drive. How a guy found his and how he helps others find theirs. Tom Bilyeu describes himself as a scared kid who worked his way out of his fear and ultimately co-founded Quest Nutrition. You’ve likely seen or bought Quest bars from the grocery store wherever you live. In 2017 he started Impact Theory, a media company focused on human potential to address as Tom says, the pandemic of body and mind. Today his Impact Theory podcast is one of the top shows in the self-improvement category and one you’ve likely heard or seen on YouTube. I sat down with Tom in 2017 not long after he started Impact Theory, and before he sold Quest Nutrition in 2019 for a tidy billion dollars. I was host of The Ziglar Show at the time and wanted to dig into a guy who really came from nothing to find success for himself and then devote himself to helping others achieve success, and what he felt the pillars were to increase human potential. You won’t find him touting hacks, but instead looking to just doing the work. Which I appreciate. It’s not a mystery, and it’s something we can all do. No Credit - No Blame: How Would You Be If You Were Anonymous
I recently watched a little of a movie called “Above The Shadows” where after the death of her mother, a girl fades away until nobody notices her and she is in essence, invisible. But she still exists. Still goes about life. As we talk about changing ourselves and who and how we want to be, I intrigue myself with the exercise of considering how you would be if there were not “who.” You were anonymous. There was no persona and no ego, leaving you to only do what your head and heart wanted. You would receive no blame and no credit. How would your behaviors and actions change? Let’s talk through it Sign up for a $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to sign up for your FREE 60-day trial Get 20% off your first probiotic membership order at pendulumlife.com/drivesyou Go to cozyearth.com/driven and use code DRIVEN for an exclusive 40% discount Use my promo code WHATDRIVESYOU for 10% off on any CleanMyMac's subscription plans Learn more about your ad choices. Understanding Who You Are vs How You Are
As we look at personal change, I feel it’s an important distinction to consider whether we want to change who we are, or how we are. I think we often feel ok about who we are at heart. We know we are striving to do good and we mean well and we aren’t looking to become some totally different person. However, we also feel dissatisfied with some of the results we are getting and wonder what actions and behaviors might get us better results. Let’s look at some ideas around still being who we are, but adjusting how we are being. Change: Can We Intrinsically Change And Do We Really Want To
In my previous episode with Karden Rabin, co-author of The Secret Language of The Body, he told the story of adopting the persona of an a-hole and making fun of others for a laugh, until he was 19 years old. And then, he changed his entire persona. Chances are though, you don’t view yourself as being a jerk. You’re ok with yourself overall, but you’d like better results from your life. You’d like more happiness and peace. So do you really want to change? Or do you just want different results? I find it is an important distinction to think through to discern what you are actually striving to achieve for yourself. From Jerk To Peace & Healing Practitioner w/ Kardin Rabin
On September 9, 2024 we published a show titled, Your Nervous System Is Controlling You & How To Master It. My guests were Jennifer Mann and Karden Rabin and my muse was their new book, The Secret Language of The Body. In our long conversation, Karden brought up his “Emotional Cold Plunge” exercise and I was incredibly intrigued. He gave me access to his community at somiainternational.com/ which I joined and went through the exercise. I ended up engaging more and just felt really attracted to Kardin’s guidance and spirit and found myself wondering how he had ended up where he is today. HIs bio says, Karden is a nervous system medicine practitioner and an expert in the fields of trauma and psychophysiological disorders. Over the last fifteen years he has combined principles of bodywork, brain retraining, and somatic trauma therapies and helped thousands of clients across the globe heal from chronic pain and illness. Karden is the Co-Founder of SOMIA and a regular contributor to Bessel Van Der Kolk’s Trauma Research Foundation and has led programming for The Wounded Warrior Project and Starbucks. But what you are about to hear is that Karden had severe asthma and almost died. He was very neglected as a child and often in tears, bored, and alone in his pain. From this, up to age 19, Karden says he became, an asshole. A bully. He was mean and used cleverness and criticism like a sword.Being a poser was identity and he worked to get tablescraps of validation from cool kids. He was good at making fun of people to get a laugh. But then…something happened. Something that drove him to become obsessed with uncovering the physics of what drives people and discovering the laws that no one is immune to. Today his ambition is to help as many people as possible. I bring you this story because I think you will resonate and it will help you see and understand yourself better, and how you can take your pain and heal it as you help relieve people of theirs. Essentialism: How To Discover & Get Rid Of The Fluff In Your Life w/ Greg McKeown
Every Monday I bring you an author with a new book. But in my personal studies, I’m just as equally reading and rereading books from years past. Classics, in my opinion. In 2010, Greg McKeown published his book, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, and it quickly became a classic. He became an instant guru on looking at our lives and our work and asking, “What is really essential?” I sat down with Greg and Tom Ziglar a few years back to understand essentialism better. You will hear, it is not about minimalism. It’s more about making the right and best decisions. Putting decisions to extreme tests. Being in control. Greg says that in an emergency, “Everyone is an essentialist.” We get on task, on target, divest ourselves of non-necessities, and do what is most efficient, effective and successful. So can you really live every moment like that? Let’s see. War & Peace: Which Have You Learned More From?
I’m wrapping up this series that started with Julia Baird australian journalist, broadcaster, author and host of the Not Stupid podcast. About the message in her brand new book: bright shining: how grace changes everything, and I got to thinking about when I've actually learned something. When I’ve been influenced to make a change. Has it come from war or peace? From everything that is not grace, or…grace? Thinking through it was really convicting for me and leads me to feeling that for the most part, grace is the only way to change the course of anything or anyone. Majors & Minors: When Is It Worth Drawing A Line?
I grew up with a mom who said, “Major on the majors, not on the minors.” Meaning to not make a big deal about small things. I ended up being a profound minimizer who was very conflict averse and didn’t make a big deal about anything. Not outwardly at least. But it was a big deal internally and I took myself to burnout and bitterness. It brings into question our personal boundaries, and what is and isn’t important enough to take issue with. Let’s think through it for ourselves here.
