A new 53 million-year-old insect fossil called a scorpionfly discovered at B.C.’s McAbee fossil bed site bears a striking resemblance to fossils of the same age from Pacific-coastal Russia, giving further evidence of an ancient Canada-Russia connection. “We’ve seen this connection before through fossil plants and animals, but these insects show this in a beautiful way,” says Bruce Archibald, a research associate in SFU’s Department of Biological Sciences and the Royal BC Museum. Cheryl Martin is a Canadian citizen (from Victoria) currently residing in the US. On February 26th, 2018 she purchased a resort cottage in Parksville, BC to use when she travels home to visit family twice a year. The cottage she purchased is in a strata complex and the City of Parksville Zoning bylaw limits the stay to 180 days, concurrent or non-consecutive, within one calendar year. They plan to rent the cottage out when we are not in town. She says when they do visit, for months at a time, they contribute to the economy by renting cars, buying groceries, eating at restaurants and other activities and so would people who rent the cottage. In light of the recent social media movement, #MeToo, Children of the Street Society and Cossette want to bring awareness to the male-dominated issue rather than the victims themselves by educating youth on what sexual abuse looks like and challenging young males to find their voices. In February, the BCSC surveyed over 500 British Columbians on their reaction to an investment offer that claimed “guaranteed” returns of 14 to 25 per cent and “no risk.” Although the offer is almost certainly fraudulent, 26 per cent of people surveyed said the opportunity was worth looking into.
