Dr Don Thomas, American engineer and a former National Aeronautics and Space Administration Astronaut spoke to us about Living Maths’ Space Tour 2019.Only 500 people in the world have flown to space in the last 55 years. Dr Don Thomas is one of them and wants to inspire the next generation. Living Mathsis a STEM-based educational NGO that brought Dr Thomas to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Lesotho for the Space Tour 2019 from the 11th to the 27th of September.

14 year old Jacob Gordon is a poet, a YouTuber and an upcoming actor. He is in grade 8 at King David Victory Park High School. He recently participated in a silent protest against gender-based violence held by his school’s SRC committee.

This week UCT Students distributed almost 800 pepper spray units and have raised over R100 000 through an online crowd funding campaign on BackaBuddy. Zoar Lewis (21), UCT student and co-founder of the online campaign against GBV spoke to us.

Our Thought Leader today was Prof Jonathan Jansen, Distinguished Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University and also President of the South African Academy of Science. He spoke to us about the value of the NPO sector in SA.

Prof Anne Fitchett -Associate Professor - School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wits University spoke about the importance of Green Roofs in SA. Green roofs are usually installed on flat roofs with vegetation planted in a growing medium on top of waterproofing, root barrier and cuspate sheeting.

Siphiwe Sithole is the founder of African Marmalade, an organic farming enterprise based in Krugersdorp in Gauteng’s West Rand. She spoke to us about leaving a corporate marketing job to start the organic farming enterprise business.

Tamryn Raynor is a matric learner at Wordsworth High School in Benoni. She spoke to us about being the youngest licenced boxing assistant coach and making history for being the youngest female coach in SA.

Jo-Ann Bekker author of Asleep Awake Asleep, spoke about her book which entails 39 interlinked short stories which can be read as a hand-drawn narrative map, charting the course of South Africa’s turbulent history.

South African musician and charismatic guitarist Sibusile Xaba, reframes maskandi into his own humanist manifesto. He spoke to us about his debut LP, Open Letter to Adoniah which was released by local label Mushroom Hour Half Hour. Last night the winners of the 2019 Sunday Times Literary Awards were announced at an event held at The Empire Conference & Events Venue in Parktown. Michelle constant spoke to them and to Jennifer Platt, the Sunday Times Book Editor.

Prof Jonny Peter is the Head of the Allergy unit at UCT’s Lung Institute responsible for monitoring pollen in SA. He spoke to us about this year seeing some of the highest recorded pollen counts in history, which had cities from Europe to the US covered in clouds of pollen as a result of global warming.

SA-born fashion designer Thebe Magugu spoke to us about winning this year’s LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Earlier this year, Magugu won the International Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week beating out 15 other designers from across the globe. His exhibition, titled Dawning, featured Magugu’s African Studies collection.

Sizwe Snail Ka Mtuze, senior partner at Snail Attorneys at Law spoke to us about the latest developments around defamation law in SA and how the law seeks to strikes a balance in protecting victims while also ensuring the practice of freedom of expression.Sizwe Snail Ka Mtuze is a member of the South African Information Regulator and senior partner at Snail Attorneys at Law . He is also the International Co-ordinator of the African Centre for Cyberlaw and Crime Prevention based in Kampala, Uganda.

Musician Ndabo Zulu joined us in-studio to talk about the Umgidi Ensemble project, which was his recent master's project at the Norwegian music Academy. He talks about how his project aims at looking at what could be a possible orchestration of a Nguni orchestration. Like in a western symphony orchestra which comprises of instrument that have a huge traditional significance to the west, the ensemble aims at assembling both conventional and Nguni traditional instruments that will complement the compositional content.

Joanne Techow, zoologist and owner of the edible insect business, Ensekta, discussed the subject of entomophagy (the eating of insects) and about the nutritional and environmental benefits of insects as a food source.,

Anne Githuku-Shongwe, a representative of UN Women South Africa’s Multi-Country Office spoke to us about the UN Women collaborating with Dove to host a masterclass during Loeries Creative Week at the Durban ICC, to advance #ProjectShowUs, an initiative by Dove, that concerns itself with the representation and inclusion of all women and non-binary individuals in media campaigns, across the world.

Mandisa Yende and Heaven Nen, are Grade 11 pupils at Jeppe High School for Girls. They spoke to us about The Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Trust that is holding a fundraising concert on Friday, August 31.The concert is Part of Jeppe High School for Girls’ annual initiative to provide scholarships to deserving young women to develop them into principled leaders, the “Ruth First Jeppe Fiesta” takes place at Wits University’s Linder Auditorium at 7.30pm.

Our two Thought Leaders today were Latiefa Mobara, Executive Director of The Press Council and Professor Firoz Cachalia, the new Chairperson of the Board of the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation. Latiefa spoke about the Council announcing that it has translated the Press Code into isiZulu and Afrikaans. Professor Firoz spoke about his new role and the vision of The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation.

Monica Laganparsad, news editor at New Frame, spoke to us about the not-for-profit, social justice media publication. New Frame IS dedicated to a pro-poor, pro-working class focus that aims to report faithfully and informatively about the lives and struggles of working class people, the marginalised and the unemployed, shack dwellers and refugees.

Co-authors Sihle Mthembu and Esinako Ndabeni spoke to us about their book called Born to Kwaito. Born to Kwaito revisits history as told through the vibrant lens of Kwaito, which is more than just music. Kwaito presented a new unbridled expression of Black South African youths.

Frans K. Smit, Cellar Master at Spier Wine Farm spoke to us about Spier Wine Farm launching a brand new wine range – Seaward. The aptly titled Seaward range is comprised of a sophisticated, lightly-wooded Chardonnay and a layered, spicy Shiraz.

Anathi Nonxuba spoke to us about his muffin business, The Muffin King. His business drive has attracted more than 17,000 followers on Facebook and he receives invitations from local businesses to give motivational talks. He sells about 500 muffins a day , making an average of R1 500 a day.

We spoke to Javier Aroyyo co-founder of Smartick a math program developed by a team of Educators, Psychologists, Mathematicians, and Engineers, and supported by the European Union. Smartick has helped children in over 100 countries improve their grades by 83%. It's a revolutionary program that is also helping SA with its math crisis.

Marc Sevitz, co-founder of TaxTim spoke to us about the significance of paying your taxes as a citizen. The aim of TaxTim is to assist taxpayers who are unable to afford the traditional tax practitioner, have trouble understanding the complexities of eFiling or cannot take the time off work to stand in a SARS queue.

Murray Hunter, creator of ‘Boris the Babybot’ & South African privacy activist has written a children’s book about surveillance. He spoke to us about Boris the BabyBot, a quirky little robot with a single mission: to track and profile babies for the Big Data industry. 'Boris the BabyBot' is a silly, subversive and delightful storybook that invites kids to imagine the secret workings of the global data industry, through the eyes of a squiggly robot with wiggly arms

Our Guest Presenter was visual artist, Gabrielle Goliath, the 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Visual Arts. She spoke to us about how her work, specifically about her current exhibition "This Song Is For". We were also joined by Gabrielle's two guests : musician Nonku Phiri and Dr Saarah Jappie, who have both collaborated with Gabrielle on her current and past work.
