Mariel Hadley Hemingway is an Academy Award-nominated actress and a best-selling author. She began acting at age 14 in a breakout role in Lipstick (1976) and received Best Supporting Actress Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations for her role in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979). She is also known for her roles in Personal Best (1982), Star 80 (1983), and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. She is the daughter of American royalty, The Hemingway family. Her grandfather is Ernest Hemingway, an American writer. Mariel was the third daughter born to Jack Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway's son, and Byra Whittlesey. Her older sister, Muffet, suffered for years from instability. Her middle sister, Margaux, a celebrated actress and model who was caught up in the fast lane of career and success, eventually died of the effects of her driven lifestyle. Mariel was forced to assume the role of stable center of her family. Mariel turned to yoga and its meditative practice to maintain her center. Much of her adult life has been directed toward finding and maintaining her balance in situations that have been heartbreakingly unsettling and emotionally disorienting. She is a mother to two daughters. Anne Heche is an Emmy Award-winning celebrated actor and NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER for her biographical book, “Call Me Crazy.” As a survivor of abuse, she's learned how to live and face the reality of a broken past on her terms. Her father was one of the first men to die of aids in America, and three months later, her brother took his own life. At 14, Anne found herself pretty much alone in the world. Despite these personal tragedies, Anne lived a survivor's life: She reached the top of the Hollywood A-List. She has starred with nearly everyone from Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, Tommy Lee Jones, Robert De Niro, and Dustin Hoffman. She guest-starred on the sitcom Ellen, fell in love with its star, Ellen DeGeneres, and watched the roles dry up. These strong women have “traveled a terrifying inner landscape in search of personal fulfillment -- and have emerged happy, whole, and strong.” Mental health is such a personal thing. We each deal with it in our own way, but we all need to be mindful of our triggers, what to avoid, and how to stay healthy. THE KIMI KATO SHOW with Jeremiah Featuring New Year's Eve in Japan The New Year is widely viewed as a time to start over — a clean slate. It’s an opportunity to leave behind past mistakes, challenges, or regrets and embrace new beginnings with optimism. This "reset" aligns with our natural inclination to mark time and milestones as moments for reflection and renewal. Many cultures have rituals or practices associated with the New Year that emphasize renewal, gratitude, and hope for the future. In Japan, for example, hatsumōde at shrines symbolize a spiritual reset. In the West, traditions like making resolutions are rooted in self-improvement and goal-setting. We are naturally drawn to rhythms and cycles, such as the passage of days, months, and years. The New Year provides a mental checkpoint for evaluating personal growth and planning for the future. Setting resolutions or intentions motivates because it offers a structured framework for achieving aspirations. Japan says goodbye to the old year on New Year’s Eve, called Ōmisoka. Ōmisoka is all about reflection and preparation—emphasizing cleansing and renewal. The New Year’s Eve starts with Ōsōji, the deep cleaning of homes before the New Year. It’s a physical and spiritual reset. Preparing your space by removing the old makes room for good fortune in the year ahead. Families take this tradition seriously, often involving every member of the household. After that, Families gather to enjoy toshikoshi soba, or “year-crossing noodles.” The noodles symbolize a wish for a long, humble, healthy life. Another major part of Ōmisoka focuses on family activities like watching TV. One of the most popular programs is Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a music competition featuring Japan’s top artists of that year. It’s not just entertainment but also a way to reflect on the year through music and culture. Let's delve deeper into Kōhaku Uta Gassen, a cornerstone of Japan's New Year's Eve celebrations. This annual music program, produced by NHK, translates to "Red and White Song Battle," symbolizing the competition between the Red Team (female artists) and the White Team (male artists). Pete Ringmaster of The RingMaster Review, says of Gary Dranow: “It is fair to say that there is an adventuring spirit within Gary Dranow that is persistently looking for new possibilities and undertaking fresh adventures. The same can be said for Gary’s music and a creative craving that explores, evolves, and never stands still.” Gary Dranow is a former professional skier turned rock musician who competed in the National Standard Race from 1987 to 2010. Gary was ranked number one nationally in his age group as a professional skier and one of the top twenty men in NASCAR from the 2005 to 2010 seasons. He became a USSA-certified professional ski coach in 2004. Gary made his mark racing and as an instructor before founding the Modern Ski Racing Academy. Gary’s musical calling began at 11 when he heard “Crossroads” by Cream on the radio. The encounter with the song sparked a realization that he wanted to be a guitarist. That acknowledgment and intent were brought to life the following day, with his mother taking him to the Ernie Ball guitar shop. Within a year, he had started his first band, The New Invaderz. Gary is also a successful entrepreneur. He founded Spoiled Brats of California, a garment manufacturing company, and mortgage brokerage company First Manhattan Funding (FMF, Inc.). He developed and sold Cyborg Information Systems, a fully automated mortgage process software. It has been a journey in life as rich as Gary’s music within acclaimed releases such as his 2023 album, “Destiny Road,” a record themed by his experiences with Bipolar 1 Disorder, and his new EP, “Never Give Up.” The latter keenly relish the seeds of diversity within Gary’s American/blues rock-rooted sound, his songs openly embracing a variety of alternative and rock flavors within heart-bred contemplations. My great-grandmother (Nana) was Spanish. English was her second language. With only an eighth-grade education, she learned about life through raising her family and showing love through her kitchen and her cooking. Her specialty was a pot of pink beans with chunks of bacon dripped into her homemade tortillas with a slab of churned butter. She served them with grilled tri-tip on her little kitchen table.
