Ep 114114. What I learned about English fluency from… DANCE CLASSES ??
If you've learned to dance, I assume it included moving your body and not just watching other people move, right? Same goes if you learned how to ride a bicycle or play the piano. Well, you know what? The same goes for learning English! If you want to become fluent – so fluent that you sometimes can't tell the difference between speaking in English or your native language because they both feel so natural – you have to put what you learn into practice, which means – SPEAKING! This is how you acquire a new habit. Eventually you won't think much about a new word or sound because it will become automatic. In this episode I'll share some memories from my days in dance class (and what I learned from that experience). Because it's not just about dancing, it's about learning any new thing, including English. What are the words people struggle to pronounce the most? In this episode, I'll share with you the most searched 'how to pronounce' words on Google and talk about how to pronounce them. Ep 110110. How to find the primary stress in words
One of the most challenging, and sometimes frustrating, aspects of English is predicting where the primary stress should be in a word. Primary stress is the one syllable in a word that sticks out the most: it's longer, louder, and higher in pitch. In this episode, we'll dive deep into the world of primary stress and I'll teach you, first, how to identify it, and then – how to predict it in some cases. And if you know me, you know that effective practice is my THING. So I'll show you my 3-step system for identifying and practicing the primary stress. Use it to see results and feel more confident and clear when communicating. And to make it fun, you'll also find a short quiz in the end. Ep 103103. Why your Voice Matters
The fear of speaking in a second language or in public can be crippling. That knot that pushes your words further down into your chest. Do you know it? We often think about these things as if they are OUR OWN issues. OUR problems, OUR English. But what if English is just a manifestation of something bigger that prevents us from speaking? What if our tendency to mute ourselves is not just English but something generational, that unless we break the chain, we will keep passing it onward? In this podcast I share with you some of the struggles I've been facing recently around creating content during uncertain times, and how I found inspiration in an unexpected place – My ancestors. Ep 100100. A native English speaker criticized my English… This is my response
What do you do when people criticize your English? Not in a good, loving way, but in a demeaning and patronizing way? When I get negative comments and criticism (and I do, a lot) I usually don't respond. But there was something about a comment I received on YouTube recently that triggered me, so I decided to respond. I wanted to do that so you'll see that I, too, receive negative feedback, and I don't let it get to me – and neither should you. But also, I wanted to show you what Native Speakerism is – the assumption that a select group of people (or teachers) with a certain linguistic background is superior to other groups who don't share the same background. I think it's important that we identify it when we see it – as it takes on many forms – and call people out on it. If you feel like sharing a negative comment you received – write it in the comments, and add your response after listening to this episode! Ep 8080. Do you sound FRIENDLY in English? (What you need to know about TONE OF VOICE)
Tone of voice in English – Is it possible to change the meaning of what you're saying, without changing your words? The answer is – YES Go to my blog post to watch the video, learn more & practice: https://bit.ly/35y81Fh We use our voice to express our emotions and feelings. It plays a huge role in our communication with other people. We often put more meaning into the speaker's tone of voice (how they say things) than into the words they use. And sometimes it only takes a slight change in our voice for something to be taken as a joke, an insult, or a friendly comment. If you want to become more expressive and engaging, and help people connect with you – exploring your tone of voice is the way! In this episode, I'll show you how the same sentence can be said in many different ways. Go to my blog post to find a list of example sentences and practice using a different tone each time. I can't speak! I don't remember words! My English Sucks! Ep 7474. Tired Of Making The SAME Grammar Mistakes Again And Again? TRY THIS
Do you get frustrated when you forget to use all the new words, correct tenses and prepositions when speaking EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW THEM?!? The English that we know and the English that we speak are not the same. When we write, we have more time to think, retrieve words, and organize our thoughts. When we speak sometimes we go into 'survival mode' or 'autopilot' – and we forget to use all that lovely grammar that we know. Why is that? And does it mean that we need to learn it again and again until we 'get it'? If you want to use spontaneously the grammar that you know when speaking, one of the things that can really help you is to think about it like habits. You have gotten used to speaking with certain speaking habits, and to change them you need to create NEW habits. How do we create new habits? Through consistent repetition. But here's the catch – how can you create new speaking patterns if you don't use them? Ep 7272. Speak Like A Native – THE MYTH
Want to speak like a native in English? Of course you do. Who wouldn't want that? But ... What if I told you that setting the goal TO SPEAK AND SOUND LIKE A NATIVE in English could also be the reason why you still feel stuck and insecure in English? Here's why: 1) This concept 'to speak like a native' implies there is only one 'right' way to speak English. In fact, the opposite is true. Native speakers have vastly different accents and expressions, and even use different forms of grammar. What the English learning industry perceives as the standard, is only one type of English spoken by a select group of people. Once you understand that there's more variety and more room for different voices, you'll have more freedom in your speaking. 2) While you may believe the goal to 'speak English like a native' keeps you motivated, in reality it could strengthen the two biggest fears that prevent people from pursuing their goals - the fear of not being good enough and the fear of rejection. In this episode, I'm going to explain why this happens and how you can achieve fluency and freedom by changing the way you think about English. I have been a fluency and pronunciation coach for 12 years. I have taught thousands of students. When I used to promote the idea that their end goal should be to 'speak like a native', I saw that my students were not able to appreciate their progress or feel contentment, because no matter what they had achieved they still felt like they were far from the 'native' ideal. I also felt this myself, as a non-native English speaker seeking to sound like a native. When I was trying to keep the form of 'perfect standard English' I felt so limited and was in constant fear of getting things wrong. When I changed my way of thinking about English, I was able to achieve so much more in my ability to communicate, without the burden and pressure of sounding a certain way - the pressure of having to pass as an American. But you know what the best part is? Once freedom is achieved, it's so much easier to actually reach your true goals - to feel as comfortable and free in English as you do in your native language. Ep 7171. How to Reach a Breakthrough in English Without Learning Anything New
As an English learner, you must have wondered – what are the things that are preventing me from reaching a breakthrough in English? You may think it's just more vocabulary, or phrasal verbs, and maybe all those fancy tenses that people use… When in fact, it's something a lot more basic and primal. It's not what ELSE you need to learn, but instead – it's how YOU think about yourself when speaking English. Yes, how we think about our English has a big part in how confident we feel when speaking English. Are we thinking kind and empowering thoughts? Or are we being harsh and critical? In this episode, I'll dive deep into explaining how you can reach a breakthrough simply by changing the way you think about your English.
