Ep 159159. Learn American Intonation, Rhythm & Body Language With a Disney Princess
In this week's episode, I'll be teaching you the difference between stressed and unstressed words and sharing clips from Frozen 2 to show you how the character animation helps convey those operative (stressed) words. Stressed words are usually longer, louder, and higher in pitch while unstressed words are softer, lower in pitch, we say them quickly, and we reduce vowels there. Just like animated Disney characters, good English speakers have body movement, gestures, and facial expressions that are aligned with the intonation, rhythm, and stress of the language. If you want to enjoy everything this episode has to offer, we recommend watching the video version so you can see the clips I mention: https://theaccentsway.com/learn-english-intonation-with-frozen More video episodes about intonation, rhythm, and stress: American INTONATION – What They Don't Teach You in School https://youtu.be/FStyKn4V8cE How to practice intonation? | Bill Murray movie speech analysis https://youtu.be/4QKfGSUTS7E Are you struggling with understanding word stress? 139. Can English learners become English teachers?
In this 'Ask Hadar' podcast episode I'm answering Silvana, an English learner from Brazil, who wants to become an English teacher. Silvana isn't sure she can do it, because she still has a lot to learn herself. I get asked this question a lot – whether non-native speakers of English should teach the language. And I always say – absolutely. If pursuing a teaching career is what you want, don't let anyone – teachers or colleagues – put you down because you're not a native speaker of English. Because teaching is so much more than transforming knowledge, especially in this day and age. In this episode, I share some thoughts on how to know you're doing a good job teaching English, whether you're a native speaker or not. Want to ask me a question on the podcast? Ep 133133. How to Find the Stress in Long Words
Long words can be really challenging to pronounce and we sometimes find ourselves trying to avoid them, especially if we're not sure how to stress them. But there's actually a good way to know where to place the primary stress in such words. And it's all about the suffix. In this episode, I'm going to talk about some common suffixes and how to stress words that have them. Want to practice? Here's a list of words with the most common suffixes + audio: http://theaccentsway.com/long-words/ Here's a loose transcription of the words as explained in the episode: possibility: paa-suh-bi-luh-dee [IPA: pɑːsəˈbɪləti] activity: ak-ti-vuh-dee [IPA: ækˈtɪvəti] responsibility: ris-paan-suh-bi-luh-dee [IPA: rispɑːnsəˈbɪləti] alphabetical: al-fuh-be-duh-k'l [IPA: ælfəˈbetɪkəl] political: puh-li-ti-k'l [IPA: pəˈlɪtɪkəl] psychological: sai-kuh-laa-dji-k'l [IPA: saɪkəˈlɑːdʒɪkəl] biology: bai-aa-luh-djee [IPA: baɪˈɑːlədʒi] technology: tek-naa-luh-djee [IPA: tekˈnɑːlədʒi] sociology: sow-see-aa-luh-djee [IPA: soʊsiˈɑːlədʒi] kilometer: ki-laa-muh-d'r [IPA: kɪˈlɑːmətər] parameter: puh-ra-muh-d'r [IPA: pəˈræmətər] thermometer: th'r-maa-muh-d'r [IPA: θərˈmɑːmətər] If you want to improve your accent and understand spoken English better, download my free American Accent audio crash course: https://theaccentsway.com/audio-accent-course/ You can also download an interactive list of 50 of the most mispronounced words in English and master the pronunciation of those tricky words: https://theaccentsway.com/mispro-signup/ Join our Facebook community to connect with non-native English learners from all over the world: https://theaccentsway.com/influency-community/

Ep 132132. Who Moved My Word Stress?!?! ?
In this episode, I'll talk about phrases and how the stress and rhythm in a phrase may CHANGE based on the function of the phrase in the sentence. For example, if you take a phrase like 'last minute', then in a simple sentence like "They finished their project at the last minute", MINUTE is usually stressed in a neutral intonation. But if you take the phrase and use it before a noun, as in "a last-minute decision", LAST will be stressed more than 'minute'. Listen to the episode and find out about more examples like this, and find out why we don't put the plural 's' in phrases like "3-year-old boy". Also, have you ever noticed this change in stress and rhythm in English? Let me know in the comments below. Ep 115115. How the universal laws work with language learning
Speaking a second language can create insecurities, fears, and frustrations. These feelings sometimes pop up when we hear ourselves speaking, and we feel that we're far from the ideal we have in our mind. We listen to our English and determine if we're powerful or not. We allow these thoughts to define our identity and self-worth. But what if we looked at it from a different perspective? What if we realized that our thoughts, visualizations, and energy regarding the way we see ourselves are MORE important than the language itself? In this episode you'll hear my conversation with Kisma, who's a prosperity code mentor, about how this approach can support you on your English journey, and in life – and how you can step into your inner power.
