Ep 6464. 3 Tips for Sounding Clear and Expressive While Wearing a Mask

It's been about 6 months since the Coronavirus took over our lives and we had to learn to communicate with a mask on. You have probably noticed how it compromises your clarity – it muffles the voice, and people can't read your lips or see your facial expressions. If you feel like you're already putting too much effort into speaking, and speaking becomes too challenging with a mask – this episode is for you. In this episode, I'll share with you a few tips about how to communicate more effectively with a mask, focusing on three elements: pronunciation, energy, and voice. Try these tips and come on over to Instagram @hadar.accentsway and let me know what you think. And remember, no matter what, don't let this mask hold you back. Speak up (with a mask) because your voice matters. Ep 6262. Why Perfectionism Will KILL Your Fluency

Having PERFECT English may sound like a dream come true, but what does it really mean to have perfect English? Is it even a THING? Is there such a thing as perfect English? And even if there was (and there isn't) – do you think it serves you to strive for perfection, or does it get in your way? In this episode I'll discuss why striving for perfection when communicating in English (which means working relentlessly on your pronunciation and never feeling satisfied, beating yourself up on small and big mistakes, not speaking when you're not sure what words to use) is a potential death threat to your fluency. You don't believe me? Listen to the episode and come on over to Instagram @hadar.accentsway and let me know what you think. Ep 6060. How I Found my Voice in English | Celebrating 200 Episodes

In this episode, I'm going to talk about how I evolved from the very first video I created on YouTube to the 200th episode of the Accent's Way magazine that was released last week. To watch the episode on my video magazine (and get the links to all the videos mentioned) go here: https://hadarshemesh.com/magazine/how-i-found-my-voice-in-english/ Just like with everything in life, my journey has started with insecurity, fear, and the need to please everyone, and continued with a profound understanding of who I am and what I have to give to the people that can serve them. I always compare my business journey to my journey as a non-native speaker (and the journey of my students and followers). To find your fluency and voice in English you have to KEEP SHOWING UP. And to be okay with making mistakes. And to trust that no matter how awkward it feels or how long it takes – you have to keep speaking up because more than anything else – your voice matters. Thank you so much for being here. I promise to keep on serving you to the best of my ability! Ep 5858. Boost your PRONUNCIATION, GRAMMAR and VOCABULARY with this 10-min daily exercise | Hadar's #SPRINT

If you liked this Sprint, you're probably going to like the SPRINT MASTER – 30 different Sprints for a powerful daily practice: https://hadarshemesh.com/sprint-master As an English learner, you probably already know that speaking is a big part of improving EVERYTHING about your English. And if you don't speak English on a daily basis, when you DO speak, it may seem like you're only using about 25% of what you know whether it's grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation. As a result, you get stuck, seem to forget words or how to form a grammatical sentence (have? has?), mispronounce words, and get way too self-conscious and insecure about speaking. So – how can you overcome this? How can you create the speaking experience and muscle memory of correct sounds, grammatically correct sentences and new words WITHOUT the opportunity of using it all in context day in and day out? Exactly for that reason I created these daily sprints. The sprints are a sequence of pronunciation drills aimed at building pronunciation confidence in new sounds, new words and common grammar structures. The repetition builds muscle memory so it becomes easier to use these sounds, retrieving the words and internalizing the grammar rule used. All while working from the outside IN. I've been using the sprints in my programs and my students tell me this is HANDS DOWN the most effective exercise they've ever done. Today, I wanted to share it with you too. Get ready…. Set…. Ep 5353. Why English Teachers Struggle Building A Successful Business Online #Friday4Teachers

This episode today is for English teachers, in particular, those who run their own business. If you're not a teacher, you can download the script here and use this episode as a listening exercise: https://hadarshemesh.com/transcript/english-teachers-building-business/ Question: Why do super talented and passionate teachers struggle with finding more students and building a sustainable business online? Why is it so hard for teachers to scale from one-to-one to one-to-many? It's not because they're not good teachers. It's usually because there's one missing element, that unless teachers embody it, it will be forever challenging to keep growing and developing personally and professionally. And that's what I share in this episode. Everything I talk about is based on my own personal experience and the transformations I've gone through in life and in my business, as well as on the experience of the teachers in my community and in my membership program English Teachers Academy. Ep 4242. How To Learn New Vocabulary? Build Pronunciation Confidence ?

Tired of theory and need the real deal?!? In this episode I share with you an in-depth vocabulary exercise that will help you learn and remember words and use them frequently. People who have tried it told me that for the first time they felt that they were growing their vocabulary! In this episode I use this technique with 5 words you may not be using as frequently as you'd like: inevitable, accurate, obvious, redundant, valuable. Give it a try and tell me how it goes! Ep 3939. Understanding Your Voice

If you feel like your voice is soft, stuck, broken, nasal, partial, annoying, monotone, weak, strange, weird, or loud… I want you to take a moment and remember that your voice is probably the NUMBER ONE asset you have, that allows you to express yourself: who you are, what you want, what you think, where you're going. Now, I know that people don't always have access to vocal training, and have no idea what to do to improve their voice quality (even though every person should have access to such a thing, not only public speakers, actors, and singers). That is why, in this episode, I share with you a live broadcast I did on Instagram where we had an intriguing conversation about voice (and beyond) Here's what some of the people shared in the conversation: Jessuss said: "I started to talk in English, my whole body was so tense, imagine my voice". "Sometimes it feels I sound rude. It might be due to speaking loudly I don't why" – shared Marta. "For me, it's not about losing my voice, rather, it's more about controlling facial expressions and spicing up my voice and body language. I feel like it's hard to be natural when you plan all of your gestures ahead" – said Sherif. So as you can see, if you don't feel comfortable with your voice – you're not alone. And I'm here to help! In this episode, I talk about all things related to voice – how it's created, why we are uncomfortable with it, and what we can do to improve the quality of our speaking voice. Make sure to also listen to Episode 38 that complements this conversation – Improve Your Speaking Voice in ENGLISH with these Vocal Exercises: https://hadarshemesh.com/podcast/38/ Here are more episodes about the voice: – Do you change your voice when you speak English? Ep 3838. Improve Your Speaking Voice in ENGLISH with these Vocal Exercises

Do you like the sound of your voice when speaking English? Do you feel that you use it to its full potential? Can people hear you well? I don't mean the metaphorical way of speaking "is your voice heard"' – I mean – is your voice carried across the room and gets into people's ears? Can you express different emotions using your voice? Do you feel that your voice is varied and interesting? Or is it monotone? People tend to dislike their voices. In fact, I remember vividly the time when I used to record my voice on an answering machine and I HATED playing it back. When it comes to speaking a second language it becomes even more challenging. Because, it's not enough that we have all those other aspects of a language to deal with (vocabulary, pronunciation, Grammar, etc. ) sometimes, oftentimes, speakers of English as a second language change, manipulate or HIDE their voices when speaking English. But unlike other physical features, we're born with – our height, body shape, eyesight – your voice is something you CAN control. If only you knew how. In this episode, you will learn how to understand your voice, get comfortable with it, and discover a few exercises that will help you free your voice and discover new placements, expressions, and power. Get ready to dance, sing, laugh, and get out of your comfort zone! Ep 3636. How To Sound Smart In English? Upgrade Your Vocabulary With This #1 Method

As non-native speakers we sometimes tend to settle for a basic word instead of a more specific, accurate, or sophisticated word. Yes, I get it. The reason why this happens is because we feel limited and bored with the words that are available to us. Of course, we know a lot more words in English, we just don't seem to use them as often. Watch my previous video about vocabulary to see why: https://youtu.be/bd6iGLmUssQ In this new episode I will help you understand how to integrate more words into your speaking and how to make your speech more varied and interesting (so instead of saying the same basic words, I'm offering a few different expressions to 8 VERY commonly used words). Ep 3434. The Ugly Side of English Learning Facebook Groups ?

Got a QUESTION about English? Pronunciation? Confidence? Ask Hadar! https://hadarshemesh.com/ask-hadar/ There are a lot of wonderful groups on Facebook whose goal is to allow people to practice their English, and as in the case of any other group online, there are some things you need to know, especially if you're a woman, in order to stay safe and active in the group. 1. You don't need to put up with anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. 2. You have any right to stand your ground and respond to any harassing or offensive comments. Speak back, and report to the admin or moderators of the group. 3. As a community member, if you encounter any inappropriate irrelevant comment or behavior towards other members, offer your support, comment on that, and report to the admin/moderators. Make it a safe environment for everyone. 4. You don't have to respond to private messages and friend requests. Feel free to ignore them if they're unwelcome, and if they're rude or aggressive – report and by all means block them. 5. Limit your time online. Keep in mind that while online groups and resources can be very helpful, they're also pretty time-consuming. In addition, make sure you're pro-active, and that you're not just there for passive learning. So even though it might be easy to pronounce in some words, it could be impossible to pronounce in other words and that makes us feel like the R is impossible! To understand the R we need to do three things: Understand how to pronounce it Understand the different types of R sounds and what might be the challenge of each Practice, practice and then practice some more. In this episode I'm going to walk you through each and every one of those steps, and at the end, even offer you the perfect way to practice with my practice sheet and audio: https://hadarshemesh.com/the-r-in-english-podcast-freebie/ I'm also going to talk about the difference between the American R and the British R! But most importantly I'll give you tips and hacks on where and how to CHEAT, so you invest less effort, pronounce less R's and sound BETTER! Whether you're struggling with pronouncing it or you know how to pronounce it but you don't use it consistently, or sometimes you become too self-conscious about it, in this episode you'll find things you can do that'll help you use it naturally and easily. Ep 1616. Personal Things You Wanted To Know About Me | Q&A

A few months ago I invited you to ask me PERSONAL questions. I didn't think I'd get many questions but I was surprised to have received dozens of awesome questions, and in this episode, I'm going to answer a bunch of them:) You'll hear about how I met my husband, my life as a social activist, my biggest failure, my plans for the future, what I do with my hair (not much), if I miss acting and more! It wasn't easy for me. As an introvert, I don't like to talk about myself much. Besides, I'm here to share knowledge and help YOU with your English and not to speak about myself. But I decided to do it, because I believe that it's important for our communication and the connection that we have. In your emails and DMs, you often share your stories (and I'm grateful for every single one you send me) so, it's only fair that I share mine. I hope that this episode, my most PERSONAL video ever (!), will make us even closer! Let me know in the comments (or in emails) if you feel the same ? Ep 1515. How Small, Smart Choices Can Transform Your English | The Compound Effect

Taking small actions every day leads to great results. Author Darren Hardy calls it "The Compound Effect", and it holds for a lot of things in life. In this episode, I'll discuss how I've realized it's deeply relevant to English learning and speaking. I experienced it in acting school, in the accent training courses I took, and in the past decade in teaching and building my business. I see it in my students as well, as they put in the work day in day out, not seeing immediate results but then reach a breakthrough and impact other people around them. 06:42 – Defining the Compound Effect 09:02 – How daily practice changed my accent in acting school 13:05 – How weekly uploads led to a successful business 17:00 – Insisting on speaking English is making a difference 25:55 – Breaking it down is building you up 30:45 – The Ripple Effect, and how it has manifested in my life 33:12 – The outcomes of OUR actions 37:15 – The Compound Effect in English: What YOU can do After listening to this episode, let me know in the comments on my website if you've experienced the Compound Effect in your life, but more importantly – what you're going to do to build up your English until the end of the month!
