But don't worry, we've got you covered with safe ways to support proper detoxification, like the importance of bile, coffee enemas, and the pros and cons of detox supplements like DIM. Q&A: hormone testing, BHRT vs HRT, peptides for weight loss, progesterone's negative side effects, uterine overgrowth, avoiding stupid advice and more!
In this Q&A Karen answers listeners' questions on all things hormones and weight loss. maymoon_design When you refer to HRT are these natural or synthetic hormones? I am having a very hard time with hot flushes. janelleminto Can HRT cause/ contribute to a thickening in the lining of the uterus? I recently had surgery to remove this and wondered if the hormones could be a cause. lcavazza66 If I struggle with progesterone replacement, is it ok to just use estrogen and testosterone? I can't sleep, gain weight and struggle with progesterone. I had severe PMDD when I was younger prior to partial hysterectomy. Labs show estrogen dominance but adding progesterone makes me feel worse. Kimdixonwiley How do you know how much HRT to prescribe when Canadian blood work only gives Estrogen and Progesterone not actual numbers? Carol What serology test should I get if I have been in menopause for 2 years. Estrogen will be low but what are the levels we are hoping to achieve for both estrogen and progesterone? If supplementing how often should we check this - serology and with the Dutch? Md say levels will fluctuate so they don't want to do testing - how can we make our case to them to get it done? How do I know a progesterone is bioidentical? Jennifer Hi Karen, I love your podcast as you are so informative! I'm 46 and have been on my current hrt for 6 months. I experienced a lot of side effects at the beginning of my hrt. I had migraines and felt depressed and extremely emotional. This went on for months and was debilitating. So my provider put me on the following treatment to assist with the symptoms stating I was really estrogen dominant and needed more progesterone. I have noticed I feel better when I'm not taking any progesterone during my period. Is it possible to have too much progesterone and then have adverse effects? I don't feel like I'm reaping any of the benefits so many others have with progesterone. Pam Hi Karen! I'm 59 and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in my early 20s after my 1st child. I'm just wondering if something is off b/c it seems like my hair is really thinning. I'm taking Armour Thyroid 90 mg daily. My doctor says everything is normal. I'm also struggling with weight loss resistance. I know this is a lot but would really appreciate any insight you may have. I love listening to your podcasts, I learn so much! Thanks for all you do and know that you're making a difference in the lives of many! KK Hi Karen! After listening to your podcast a couple of years ago, I got my hormones checked and found a Functional Practitioner to go over my health - she confirmed I was in Menopause and that my Progesterone was flat-lining, my Testosterone and Estrogen were low. My question is, Should I be getting better results? I still struggle with quality sleep and maintaining lubrication and holding onto menopausal weight, I have still been having DHEA (50mg per day). My practitioner believes that the DHEA is better to boost than Progesterone or Testosterone. Should I expect better results or am I being ridiculous? Luhu Hi Karen, Your number one fan here :) Studying with FDN to become a practitioner, very well-versed in gut health, hormones, etc but cannot figure out my own body since menopause! When my estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all went very low—6 for E and T, I gained weight all over and can't lose it. Also developed chronic gut issues in menopause despite no gluten, no dairy, no sugar, (no fun!). SO Q: I started on the estrogen patch applying one half of the .025 dose, next day I added the next half, felt so much more energy and felt like I started losing lbs but quickly developed heartburn/reflux and felt a little overstimulated (maybe an adhesive ingredient in the patch? I'm very sensitive), I also felt some discomfort in my liver/gallbladder area even though I support both. I waited 3 weeks before adding progesterone due to past issues (ok'd by DR), then applied Quicksilver Scientific's topical progesterone 8mg and all hell broke loose. Within 2 days I retained so much water, and looked like I'd gained another 10lbs, belly got so swollen from diaphragm down and I felt weird pinching-like gas pains in ribs under right breast and then it moved to under left breast and the heartburn/reflux got worse. I had to stop both hormones :(. Please help, what do you think is going on with my body? Jean clark I'm almost 54 (bday in May) my local naturopath prescribed bio-identical hormone replacement without having me do a hormone test first. Should I be taking a hormone test before just going ahead with a prescription? It is all so confusing. Thanks!! Anonymous What is your morning routine? What time do you eat breakfast and what do you eat? Do you drink coffee? Could not eating breakfast actually raise your blood sugar? Anonymous Hi Karen, I was wondering how your experience with Fully Vital hair growth system has been? Thank you, Gail Anonymous How does one determine when it's appropriate to use 50/50 Biest

Part 2 of The Sugar Fix: Balancing Hormones, Reversing Insulin Resistance and Breaking the Addiction Cycle- a Round Table Talk.
Join host Karen as she sits down with two of her favorite women, Danielle Daem and Danielle Hamilton, for a roundtable discussion on the wild world of sugar addiction. In this episode, we answer listeners' questions on all things sugar! What are your fav supplements to help with insulin resistance? I know I shouldn't be eating junk but it keeps sneaking back into my life. Where should I even start? Common advice I hear is, "listen to your body." How can I know if I can even trust what my body is telling me? How does one best manage their hormones when heading into the perimenopausal state as it relates to blood sugar regulation? I'm terrified of feeling my emotions and don't even know where to start. How do I navigate the emotional work without falling apart? How do I discover what's really at the root of my addiction to sugar? Dani H. Is eating whole fruits (dried or fresh) going to cause insulin resistance the same way that sugar or sweets or breads etc... will? Also, what would the best options be when someone wants a little something sweet? My blood sugar is usually around 108-120 in the morning after waking up. I want to get it below 100. I do not want diabetes. I know I have insulin resistance issues. I am post menopausal. I take excellent blood sugar supplements and exercise. I eat healthy and have been trying more plant based eating, always with a lot of vegetables. I still have meat once in a while. What is the best way to bring this number down in the morning and stay more balanced throughout the day? My father is diabetic and I do not want to end up there. Thank you! 44 years old. Fasting blood sugar is never good— always 100-115 in the morning (7am-noon) no matter if I ate at 11pm or hadn't eaten for 18 hours and no matter how little or much sugar I ate. Thyroid labs all normal, but many symptoms of hypothyroid- weight gain, fatigue especially. Chicken or the egg here? Thyroid causing issues with blood sugar or blood sugar causing issues with thyroid? Or something else completely? Nothing seems to move the needle on either except thyroid speeding up if things move toward the hyper side of range or just out… but not sure what made that happen in the first place. Losing hope and money trying to stop this and heal since labs are in range- western med drs are useless. It's in my head, right, hah. Holistic drs have only helped me with parts of healing (no more mold, candida, etc), but no one can solve the weight and exhaustion issue. I live a very clean lifestyle in terms of food and products and air/water. Less than 8% of people actually stick to their resolutions each year, yet millions of people continue to set goals with high hopes of a better year ahead. In this episode, we talk about Our personal goals for the year. What have been our biggest stumbling blocks as well as our clients when it comes to reaching goals? What are the top things that women can do to help reach their goals? Karen's number one tool is making sure you do what it is you set out to accomplish in life. The number #1 thing that women have to stop thinking! Why do we give up on our goals and what to do to change that? How to create sustainable changes for long-term results and more!! Pam has been a fitness professional for 25 years as an instructor, coach and trainer. She's AFAA certified in group exercise and personal training. She is passionate about helping women make exercise a priority (especially strength training) and eating for their goals and longevity. Helping women realize that taking care of themselves is not selfish, it's self-care as well as putting their needs first/on their calendar is so important to Pam. Her tagline is Your Health is Your Wealth! Jessica started in the fitness industry about 10 years ago as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. Soon after, she realized that helping people reach their health goals was a lot more than just how much you move your body, but also about what you eat, how you sleep and how you manage your stress levels. This motivated her to get a nutrition, hormone specialist and gut health specialist certification so she could help people tackle their health issues from a foundational perspective. Jessica's firm belief is that health optimization is not only found just by changing things in your lifestyle but also by your mindset and realizing that health is a continuous journey of educating yourself. Q&A: Progesterone Sensitivity, Boosting Testosterone, Best form of Estrogen HRT, Leptin Resistance, Fibroids, Rhythmic HRT, and More!
Q&A with Karen Anonymous Hello, I have had hair loss, Hashimotos since 50yrs on thyroid medication t4. I tried supplements with vitamin b complex but my hair is very thin and has no shine. I have increased my protein intake. What else can I do? Mary What are the options if testosterone is low but taking it (BHRT cream) causes facial breakouts? My Dutch showed my a/b very slightly to the androgen side. Thank you, Karen! Roxy Hi Karen- I love your show and all that you do! I am really having trouble with progesterone. I've tried it in every form- pill, cream and now suppository, but I'm still getting very bad side effects (acne, bloating, alternating between anger and crying, heartburn). I am on estrogen replacement so I know I need progesterone, but I really hate it. My gut is fine (I've had all the tests) so it is not that--my body just really hates progesterone. The dose is still low (100 mg/day)- I was on a lower dose but had to have a D & C because it wasn't enough to balance the estrogen. What can I do to help my body adjust? Will these symptoms ever go away? Also, I know you recommend taking it only 2 weeks/month, but my doctor says I need to take it every day (otherwise, I get a period every 2 weeks). I have been to several doctors (including Dr. Gersh) and no one can figure it out. Please help! Thank you so much! Kathy H Hi Karen! Enjoy your podcast and personality. Learn a lot each time. Wanting to know your opinions on best delivery method of Estradiol—patch, gel, troche? Have definitely ruled out pellets. My age is 55 and recently transitioned into menopause. Thank you! Beverly Good morning Karen, your podcast popped up on my Spotify the other day and I was thinking… interesting…I have no idea about my hormones ….I just know that my hair is thinning, I've got 49 extra pounds on, muffin top, swollen ankles , aches and pains… hormone therapy required??? I've done the weight loss programs out there including keto….taken supplements from health food store and purchase from doTerra… I will say that for the past two weeks I have been doing an exercise video from YouTube… 15-30 min depending on how stiff I am, I'm also an early riser 5:30…. I think that's it lol covered from head to toe lol …. I have listened to your podcast and so far so good ! I will be honest with you I am financially strapped, single and in my own … honestly, no reason to be overweight and sluggish…. I don't have to cook for anyone but me… I've given up flour products, root vegetables, and alcohol, I do not smoke ….I think that's it for now…lol definitely open for suggestions!! Thanks 🙏 Beverly Angie With bio-identical HRT in Menopause, is it important to follow the cyclic rhythm of your period, even though you no longer have one by increasing estradiol mid-cycle and stopping only progesterone the last week? Anonymous Can you talk about uterine fibroids: causes, cures (beside surgery), dietary help, anything that can shed light on this mystery that millions of women suffer from...? I am 44 and have 5 fibroids the size of lemons. Because of their position, they can only be removed by taking out the entire uterus. I would really like to avoid surgery! My doctor says the only other thing I can do is go on the pill to help with symptoms. I absolutely do not want to go on the pill! Thank you for your help! Lana I was wondering exactly how often I should use my progesterone cream. I started out using it every day and then went to every other week. But I think I heard you say it should be used no more often than every 2 weeks??? I use estradiol cream every day. Anonymous I am 45 and in perimenopause. I'm hearing a lot about leptin and how circadian rhythm influences your hormones. They are suggesting you eat within 30 minutes of getting up? Do you agree with that? (I have to get up at 5:00 every day)! I currently get up at 5:00, have a coffee with nutpods, exercise (yoga or low impact with dumbbells) and eat around 10:30-11, after I get the kids to school and get into the office. Thanks for all you do Karen! I am learning so much! Barbora What is the best way to naturally boost testosterone levels for a 44 yo cycling woman, who is lean and exercises regularly (both resistance training and mainly walking, yoga, barre..)? Part 2 Q&A with Karen optimal hormone levels in menopause, menopause weight gain, PMS cravings, sex drive, estrogen detox and more!
In this part 2 of my Q&A Deb What are optimal blood levels for progesterone, estrogen and testosterone in women over 60? Is there a ratio between estrogen and progesterone that is optimal? Lisa I am 54 and in full menopause. Should I be using topical estradiol and progesterone cream? I currently only use progesterone and the few times I have tried the estradiol cream I have felt very moody/pissy. I use the progesterone cream every other week. Thanks for all of your great info! Jodi I'm a 50-year-old post-menopausal woman with weight gain and abdominal/back/thigh fat increase in the last 3 years. Up 20# (down about 10 over the last 8 months) So based on your recommendations (and agreement from GYN) and my very low levels of progesterone, estrogens, and testosterone. I'm doing a combo bioidentical estrogen and testosterone vaginal cream and Oral Progesterone. First few months I just applied to my skin 2 pumps as directed but it often felt like more was getting in my underwear so I started using an insert tube thing. I haven't retested yet- on month 4, but am wondering if this is the best way to get the estrogen/testosterone. Would it be better to have them separated? Or a different form? Also, I've been taking a week off of the OMP. Is this still recommended? I'm an RD getting my certification in Functional nutrition and I do all the 'stuff' Eat clean, supplements, exercise, sleep and still weight loss is very slow and hard and any deviation from the above plan I seem to gain 2-5#. The hormones have helped with sleep and some of that weight loss occurred after taking but still, my body doesn't look like me. (More like my mom!!!) any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks again! Danielle Hi Karen, I've been reducing my refined sugar intake over the last year and I do well all month until the week of my cycle. Why do such intense cravings for sugar, especially chocolate, accompany periods? Which hormones are fluctuating that trigger this? Is it the drop in progesterone? Thank you! Anonymous I have a question about hormone replacement topical application. I know it is best to rotate application sites so as not to overload the hormone receptors. However, I am on four different hormone creams and wondering if it is sufficient to rotate the different hormones between each site, (are the hormone receptors specific to each hormone?) or should I be taking a break completely to give them a chance to reset? I am on DHEA, testosterone, estrogen/estradiol, and progesterone and I rotate those between the chest, inner wrist, and back of the knee. Thank you! Anonymous I have been following your podcast for a year now and I love your energy. Your show is very informative and gives us women hope!! I am 66 years old and had my last period at 55 so my question to you am I too old to start any hormone therapy or should I have begun therapy in perimenopause. Just in these last couple of years, I have been feeling low and not myself. I still work outside the home and am a busy grandmother of 4. At my age, I am still very busy and probably stressed with all the responsibilities I still have to encounter in my life. I still try and keep my body active by doing weight training 2-3 times a week and walking 2-3 times a week. I have this belly fat I can't get rid of. My sex drive is nil and has been for two years now. I am just not in a happy place and want to feel full again. I don't know where to start. Naty I have been struggling with sugar binges for over 50 yrs causing abdominal belly fat I walk every day 2 hrs. I have sugar cravings and tried herbal supplements but they do not work sugar is always there and I know I am very emotional and have low esteem. I have no sex drive Menaopause. So frustrated, what can I do? Luhu Hi Karen! Love you!... listen to all your podcasts and have learned so much, I'm a long-term beauty/health/nutrition journalist studying with FDN to become a practitioner and I hope to interview you one day! :) OK, I've always been fit and very lean but have gained 20lbs with menopause all over not just belly, it's like my whole outline is bigger…is this typical? I want to start BHRT and do it right, i.e. knowing my genetics and pathways so I lose this weight not gain more. Fear of that has stopped me so far….and worrying that my gut is not in top shape, but menopause itself makes the gut worse right? Do you see gut improvement with BHRT? My last stool test showed that my beta-glucuronidase was high BUT when I take any Phase 2 support now like calcium d-glucarate or DIM or even Resveratrol my weight instantly increases!! I've asked 2 functional med docs if this is because it's lowering my estrogen more and they said no something else is wrong. But my instinct was that it lowered my estrogen more LIKE YOU SAID! [I tried Dr. LB's Receptor Detox with a low-dose cal d-glucarate and this happened too.] Is this what you see? And do you recommend products like this DURING BHRT so that the hormones are detoxed well? My thyroid
Part 1 Q&A with Karen all things hormone replacement, thyroid, sex drive, weight loss and more!
In this Q&A Kesha Hi, Karen. I am 44 and peri menopausal. My periods are all over the place. I'll go 50+ days with no cycle and then start my cycle. Recently I had a full cycle for 7 days. It got lighter towards the end. Then 5 days later I started my cycle again and had another full period. I take progesterone cream every 14 days and also testosterone injections every 4 days. I do feel great but the fluctuations in my cycle are frustrating. I do know this is just part of peri. My doctor said I may want to take progesterone every day for a while until my cycle is regulated. What do you think about this? Will using BioIdentical HRT prevent menopause or is it to help ease the symptoms of menopause? I have a friend whose doctor is trying to use HRT to push her thru menopause quickly. Anonymous Hi, I was diagnosed a year ago with Endometrial hyperplasia (without atypia) which has been under control using natural micronized progesterone pills (200mg) daily. Throughout the several past few years I've been having simple cysts in my ovaries that appear and go away by themselves but last April a mammogram was done on both my breasts and since then I've been having pain in my left breast on the left side of my nipple. An ultrasound was done twice after the mammography to check the health of my breasts and to try to know the source of the pain but nothing was seen except "Fibroadenosis" in both breasts. I have done some research and found that vitamin E and iodine can help in treating Fibroadenosis but I don't want to self-medicate as I know that iodine could affect the thyroid gland. I would like to try both iodine and vitamin E in doses that are monitored by a specialist. Lpeeterson When in full menopause should we be using both progesterone and estradiol cream? Sandijo I'm wondering about BHRT testosterone for menopausal women (approx 50-60yr old). I feel like I don't hear as much from experts on Testosterone for women. What is the optimal blood lab? Will it convert down the path into estrogen? Can I take it every day of the month? Better to take DHEA instead and let it convert to testosterone? Anonymous Okay my question is what do I eat to help with the immune system disease and inflammation to lose weight and yes I do have a leaky gut my cholesterol is high the other one is low my ferritin is high lupus is high Casey Hello! What causes weight fluctuations? I have hypothyroidism but am starting to think these weight fluctuations aren't thyroid related. I can be as much as 10 pounds heavier or lighter from day to day. I hate it! Jill Over heard that HRT won't work if you're over 10 years menopausal. Is that true? Courtenay Hi Karen! I have been dealing with hypothyroidism for over two years now, when first diagnosed my doc put me on 100mcg of Synthroid and reluctantly on 25 mcg of Cytomel. This seemed to work for me quite fast as I was able to lose about ten pounds without effort for the first time in my life! Fast forward one full year I gained that ten back and MORE over the span of two weeks this past January. Since the weight gain, I was able to find a provider to prescribe t3 only as I feel like I may have had a reverse t3 problem.. but as you know, I'm Canada they will not test. Since t3 only I feel better but still can't lose this stubborn weight I put on and it's really messing with me mentally. Any advice? Ps. I don't have insulin resistance. Natalie I am 51 and have been without a period for 4 months. My estrogen is very low and I am having all the symptoms, the worst being anxiety, fog and flashes. I've been to my doctor to get his suggestions. I have also been listening to you for a while now and love your information and podcasts. I just started taking progesterone. I have activated protein C deficiency - a hereditary clotting disorder on my father's side and my mother had breast Ca at 36 (she is still alive and well) Is taking some form of estrogen out of the question for me? Thanks for your help and all you do to help women! I am fortunate to come across your podcast Natalie (Regina SK) Anonymous I need help with weight loss and sex drive!! How to help the rise in morning blood glucose from a cortisol release?
