Ep 110How People Pleasing Will RUIN Your Relationships | Nick Pollard
In this week's episode, I am joined by Nick Pollard! People call Nick the People-DIS-Pleaser because he teaches thousands of people every week how to set boundaries and break free from people-pleasing. (And that can be displeasing to the people that love to walk all over you!) You CAN live a life that is genuine to you, people-pleasing isn't your forever. As Nick says it, he has walked the road from people-pleaser to captain of his own life. In the beginning People-pleasers are usually trained from childhood. The demand to be quiet, push aside your own needs and be EXACTLY what everyone else expects is DRILLED IN to our brains. Nick spent his whole childhood and the first few years of adulthood trying to please his dad. He was constantly proving himself (and lying to himself about how miserable he was). And then Everything came crashing down. HARD! His dad was hiding a terrible secret and when Nick found out how horribly his dad had betrayed the rest of his family his world imploded. Nick turned to alcohol and spent almost every minute at the bar. He threw away his entire "perfect" life he'd built and he didn't care. He was overweight, coming off a 3rd divorce and a business he had bankrupted. Suddenly Nick realised he'd only been living for other people – This was the beginning of the changes. Doormat Nick, the one who would ask "how high" when anybody said jump, the Nick with zero boundaries – was OUT! For the first time Nick felt awake and he was going to be HIM for the very first time. And to me, when I thought of how I was living my life, it was always like, will this other person like me? That's why I'm doing it." 09:05 - 09:16 • "And it's this inauthentic way of being that causes us as humans, or, you know, as people-pleasing humans, to never also understand who we are." 11:32 - 11:42 • "And what I mean by transactional is like you give to get acceptance and love. So if your relationships feel like they're transactional, it's because you've made them transactional" 11:58 - 12:05 • "It's a really, really painful realization. Like, you've chosen your life to this point, right?" 12:21 - 12:28 • "At the end of the day, we are all accountable for how we've lived our lives. We are responsible for how this thing turns out."

This week, I wanted to share a personal story. One of the questions I get asked the most is… "Scott, both of your sons are off playing high-level soccer, what is the secret?" To be honest with you, there is no real "secret"… I have just taught them discipline from a very young age. In my experience, if you want your kids to be strong, to be capable, and to excel in life they need discipline to be a major pillar in their everyday life. So that is why this week, I wanted to share my story of raising strong and capable sons through a blend of both discipline and love! Ep 78The Harsh Reality of Parenthood That They Don't Tell You About | Parenting Lessons and Reflections
This conversation revolves around the experience of dropping off a child at college and the introspective thoughts and emotions that come with it. Today I reflect on the preparation for the transition, the memories of raising the child, and the importance of faith and communication. This conversation also touches on parenting lessons, the role of words and responsibility, and the impact and energy one brings to the world. To sum up my message, as parents we need to continue living our own purpose while supporting our child's journey. Key Points: The experience of dropping off a child at college can be a time of introspection and reflection for parents. Parents may feel both prepared and unprepared for the emotional impact of their child leaving for college. Words matter, both in how we communicate with others and how we speak to ourselves. Taking responsibility and learning from mistakes is more productive than blaming others. Faith can provide guidance and support during times of transition and uncertainty. The energy we bring to the world, including our mindset and physical well-being, can greatly impact our experiences. Parents should prioritize their own purpose and continue living fulfilling lives while supporting their child's journey.

Dr. Jeff Karp, PhD. is a passionate mentor and biomedical engineering professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT, a Distinguished Chair at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. As a bioengineer, Dr. Karp is at the forefront of taking inspiration from the most successful researchers of all time—evolution and nature—to find ways to improve our daily life, health, focus, and productive purpose. His lab's technologies have led to the formation of thirteen companies. The technologies they have developed include a tissue glue that can seal holes inside a beating heart; targeted therapy for osteoarthritis, Crohn's disease, and brain disorders; "smart needles" that automatically stop when they reach their target; a nasal spray that neutralizes pathogens; and immunotherapy approaches to annihilate cancer. Growing up in rural Canada he was written off by his school because of his learning differences. He evolved a process for embracing life, embodied by 'Life Ignition Tools', through years of iteration and tinkering to make his unique patterns of thought and behavior work for him. These LIT tools have been thoroughly road-tested, through Dr. Karp's life, in his lab, and by his many mentees.
