Ep 207Metals From the Bottom of the Ocean to Land on The Green Insider

Hear all about ocean-based metals from the Chairman and CEO of The Metals Company, Gerard Barron. On episode 207 of The Green Insider, you will learn how nickel sulfate, cobalt sulfate, copper, and manganese are mined from the bottom of the ocean.  The Metals Company lifts the polymetallic nodules to the surface, takes them to shore, and processes them with near-zero solid waste, no tailings or deforestation, and with careful attention not to harm the integrity of the deep-ocean ecosystem. The ESG footprint of battery production is now firmly in the spotlight and a recent Benchmark study found that producing nickel, copper and cobalt from nodules would outperform key land-based production across almost every impact category analyzed, lowering emissions by 70-80% on average. Four metals in high grades means roughly 4X less material needs to be processed for the same amount of metal and no toxic levels of heavy elements means the entirety of a nodule can be used, making near zero-solid-waste production possible. Their mission is to build a carefully managed metal commons that will be used, recovered, and reused again and again. More on Gerard Barron: Gerard Barron has agreed to serve as TMC’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors upon the closing of the Business Combination.   He was nominated to serve as a member of the TMC board of directors upon the closing of the Business Combination.  Mr. Barron became involved in the early strategic development and financing of DeepGreen during its formation in 2011 and stepped into the role of DeepGreen’s Chairman and CEO in 2018. About The Metals Company The Metals Company is developing the world’s largest estimated source of battery metals, with enough nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese to electrify the entire U.S. passenger vehicle fleet.Their aim is to supply the low-impact metals necessary to store clean energy and power electric vehicles, and to in turn create a closed-loop system—a world where metals are not mined and dumped, but rented and returned. These metals can make electric car batteries—as well as for renewable energy storage, wind turbines and solar panels-we can dramatically reduce environmental and social impacts for the whole planet. TMC’s plan is simple and attainable: supply the necessary metals with the least possible impact, building enough metal stock to stop extracting from the planet and enabling society to live off recycled metals. The Metals Company was formed through the merger of DeepGreen Metals Inc. with the Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corporation. Portable Wind Generator Now Available for Your Campsite

Chris Sigshoj, Co-founder of KiteX.tech explains how this Danish company plans to create the world’s lightest wind turbines on episode 202 of ERENEWABLE and The Green Insider Podcast. From kite surfing to a career in wind turbines, Chris and his partner developed a lighter, more powerful, and easier to use wind power system. Their system is so light; you can take it on your next adventure or even utilize it to supplement your home electricity demands in case of an emergency. If you are into camping, you will not want to miss this episode of The Green Insider. Chris tells how in 20 minutes your campsite can have wind power from KiteX.tech. About KiteX.tech As we delved deeper into our mission, a surprising revelation emerged. The intermediate step we initially considered, involving guy wire supported tower and structurally supported kites, evolved into our ultimate vision. This approach promised substantial material savings (still 3-10 times less) compared to conventional wind turbines, while avoiding the complexities associated with flying wind turbines. Safety zones and noise levels that had been challenges for our flying wind turbine concept were no longer hindrances. Additionally, our lighter structures eased installation and eliminated the need for massive concrete foundations. Our approach is distinct. We recognize the history of wind turbine startups and the pitfalls they’ve encountered. Many have faltered due to inadequate prototyping and underestimating the intricate engineering involved. We’ve taken a different route – one grounded in patience and incremental progress. Our commitment to refining our technology on a smaller scale, meticulously addressing each challenge, sets us apart. It demonstrates our dedication to creating a lasting impact rather than pursuing short-lived gains. Acknowledging the significance of modest beginnings, we identified a specific niche – portable off-grid recreational applications. By focusing on this market, we not only serve an underserved sector but also provide a platform to fine-tune our innovations. This deliberate approach ensures that every step we take contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable future. Currently, we’re in the midst of scaling up production for our groundbreaking Wind Catcher – a small, portable, off-grid wind turbine that provides a glimpse into the potential of our technology. Simultaneously, we’re actively shaping the future with plans for the next-generation turbine, which will be 2-3 times larger than the Wind Catcher and seamlessly integrated into the grid. Ep 199Another Sustainable Wine Stop by The Green Insider

ERENEWABLE and The Green Insider Podcast’s next stop in the Texas Hill Country took us to Pedernales Cellars.  On episode 201 hear from the co-founder and winemaker, David Kuhlken. David and his sister Julie Kuhlken started Pedernales Cellars near Fredericksburg, TX in 2006.  Pedernales Cellars draws its name from geography and history – the Pedernales River runs through the Texas Hill Country, and “pedernales” means flint in Spanish. They strive to make the highest quality wine in a sustainable way while exercising good stewardship to realize their vision. When visiting this winery, sustainability starts in their vineyard, then to the winemaking facility, and ends up in the tasting room. The tasting room features a few local and sustainable products, including using CFL, solar lighting, and collecting rainwater in a 55,000-gallon tank in order to water the landscaping. David covers a lot in this 30-minute podcast regarding the wine business and being sustainable. More about David Kuhlken David Kuhlken is a co-founder of Pedernales Cellars and has been the winemaker for the company since 2006.  His first experience with the Texas wine industry came when his parents, Larry and Jeanine planted the Kuhlken Vineyard north of Fredericksburg in 1995.  In 2005, David joined his sister Julie and his wife Heather to start Pedernales Cellars.  He developed his winemaking style through collaboration with a few local winemakers as well as training through the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology certification program.   Stylistically, David prefers to use blends of different Texas varietals and draw from both the Texas High Plains and Texas Hill Country to structure more complex and rich wines.  Tempranillo has served as the foundation of the red wine program since 2006, while Viognier has been the most prominent varietal for white wine making.  However, David has continually been experimental with his varietal selections drawing from over 20 varietals grown at sites ranging from the Kuhlken estate vineyard to nearly a dozen additional vineyard sites across the state.   David would also be the first to tell you that there is no better place to make wine.  Texas is a place where each winemaker stands by their own style, while at the same time is open to share their philosophy and collaborate to improve their art.  This collaboration and independent thinking have allowed for dramatic improvement in the quality and diversity of Texas wines and makes it a place where growing grapes and making wine is continually dynamic.  That culture has been a perfect fit for David’s approach to winemaking. Follow Dave on Instagram @winemakerdave. PEDERNALES CELLARS Owned & operated by a sixth generation Texas family, Pedernales Cellars is committed to crafting world class wine from 100% Texas fruit using sustainable practices.  Its award-winning Texas Tempranillo and Viognier are benchmarks for these grape varietals in the state.  The estate vineyard, Kuhlken Vineyards, was planted in 1995 by Larry and Jeanine Kuhlken in Texas’ oldest AVA (American Viticultural Area), Bell Mountain, which lies within the Texas Hill Country AVA.   In 2006, their children, Julie and David, founded Pedernales Cellars.  As a family affair, each brings their unique professional experiences to the business.  Larry and Jeanine met each other working as computer programmers on the Apollo 11 mission, a love story commemorated by a special bottling called Over the Moon Rose.  Julie (aka Dr. Julie) is a graduate of Stanford University, has a doctorate in philosophy and taught at universities in both the US and the UK.  She finds that her many years of teaching and writing aid her in her role as CEO focused on managing the front of the house.   To develop her knowledge of wine she studied and received the advanced certificate (WSET III) from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust.  David is a Rice University graduate and has an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at UT Austin, which are a strong foundation for his roles as president and winemaker.  He developed his winemaking style through collaboration with several local winemakers as well as training through the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology certification program.   The family is currently nurturing the third generation, most of whom are still teenagers, but already actively participate in the vineyard, tasting room, and cellar.  To be an Insider please subscribe to The Green Insider powered by ERENEWABLE wherever you get your podcast from and remember to leave us a five-star rating. Ep 188Echols Has Passion for Georgia and New Vogtle Nuclear Plant

We are pleased to bring back from episode 10, Tim Echols, Vice-Chair of the Georgia Public Service Commission.  In today’s episode 188 of The Green Insider, Tim will discuss Georgia’s new nuclear plant, Vogtle. Each Vogtle reactor can generate enough electricity to power half a million homes without burning fossil fuels.  Additionally, we discuss the life of a reactor, grid reliability, the growth of RNG, hydrogen, EV’s, hybrid cars, and of course – Georgia vs Georgia Tech. More about Tim Echols As the former Public Service Commissioner his primary job was energy regulation. When Echols took office, Georgia was 34th in solar power. Now, the state is 9th in the nation for installed solar. In 2020, Conservatives for Clean Energy dubbed Echols the “Solar Architect of Georgia.” Georgia will be 4th in installed solar by 2024. Echols has also created the Clean Energy Roadshow that has traveled the state every summer for the last eleven years. This educational event travels to cities around the state helping commuters, businesses and municipal governments evaluate alternative fuel for their transportation and residential use. Tim authored the December 2017 motion to keep Plant Vogtle moving forward. He believes carbon-free nuclear energy plus solar is the way forward for Georgia. He has represented the United States at the World Nuclear Exhibition for the last eight years. Tim has tried to lead by example. He added solar hot water heating to his Athens home just before being sworn in. He bought a natural gas car, a propane van and now owns an electric car. Tim also led the effort to provide the Salvation Army and two other agencies with $5 million to help low-income seniors in Atlanta with heating assistance. That program continues today. Tim created a pilot program to provide specially equipped IPADS to the hearing impaired to help them function more productively. Tim also led the PSC to increase the number of pediatric hearing aids in a program the PSC oversees. Most recently, Tim rallied donors and the solar community to build and donate to the Hog Hammock Foundation a 16-panel solar pavilion for the community library on the remote island off Georgia’s coast. Sapelo is the home of one of the last remaining Gullah Geechee communities and this array provides free electricity to the library for the next 30 years. With help from YellaWood, Southern Current and EDF Renewables, Echols led the way to build this lasting asset. Tim also has been at the forefront in fighting human sex trafficking. He created the “Unholy Tour” that helps policy makers see first-hand the harms of human trafficking. As a part of his efforts to educate the public about the harms of trafficking, Echols created the Wilberforce Fellowship that meets once per year at Jackson Lake in Newton County. Tim and Judge Tim Batten head up this effort. Tim has a weekly radio show called Energy Matters airing on Cox Media Group and in four other Georgia media markets. Tim most recently finished up a historical fiction book about the founding of the Jekyll Island Club entitled “Jean Marc of Jekyll.” The book is about the power of remarkable friendships. Tim and his wife, Windy, have been married 40 years and they have seven children. He has 3 degrees from the University of Georgia and lives in Hoschton, Georgia. Ep 176Concept to Completion Anything Energy and Sustainability

This week Russ Bates, CEO of NXTGEN Clean Energy joins us on episode 176 of The Green Insider.  Russ founded NXTGEN as a one stop shop, concept to completion, single point of contact company for customized project development and execution of solar power, wind power, battery storage, solar lighting, and electric vehicle charging stations for businesses, homeowners, municipalities, health care facilities, schools, and so on. NXTGEN works with clients from concept to completion. Russ Bates Bio Russ Bates was born in the ‘coal country’ of Southern Indiana. He grew up in a small house built on an abandoned coal mine and had family and friends that made their living working in the mines. In the early ‘90s, Russ’ worked his first job as an IBEW electrician at a coal fired power plant. This fossil fuel power generation industry was incredibly strong, and his career continued at various coal fired and combined cycle (gas) power generation facilities. During this time, Russ grew increasingly interested in renewable energy technology and was inspired by its continued advancement. He has been directly involved with solar, battery storage and wind power generation projects as well as electric vehicle charging stations. The idea for NXTGEN Clean Energy Solutions was born of Russ’ passion for renewable energy. He recognized that there was sometimes a missing link between this technology and public awareness of its benefits. He also identified the issue of accessibility to various aspects of the technology even if the awareness is there. Ep 165Data Centers and Bitcoin Mining Working Together For Clean Energy

Usually people don’t think of data centers, bitcoin mining and clean energy working together, but they do. In today’s world, whenever you hear of a data center being built, it will be most likely used for bitcoin mining. On today’s episode 167 of The Green Insider podcast, hear energy professional Nathan Sprague, COO of Outlaw Mining, describe to us how these items all go together. Nathan, a returning guest of the podcast, talks about power structures such as PPAs, VPPAs, and merchant generation. From there, we discuss managing price risk and basis risk, congestion, curtailment, negative correlation and much more. Find out why building a data center behind the meter has it’s advantages versus outside the meter where an interconnection permit is needed. On average, a behind the meter project takes 45-60 days to complete a 50 MW facility. By the time you finish this podcast, you will understand why co-locating renewable projects will be the fastest way to develop a clean energy project.
