Ep 278Identifying Valuable Projects for Hyperscalers: A Collaborative Approach

On episode 278 of The Green Insider, Preston Ochsner discussed the current state of renewable energy in Texas, specifically focusing on the retail energy sector and the potential for growth within the grid. As Founder and CEO of Ochsner Interest, he highlighted two main bottlenecks in the system: Generation Side: A large number of renewable projects are in the queue. Load Side: A significant number of data center and hyperscaler projects are in the queue. Preston estimated that around 75% of the 10,000 megawatts in the Dallas County queue and around 25% of the 389,000 megawatts in the ERCOT queue would be completed in the next two years. They also discussed the potential for industrial manufacturing load to increase due to current policies and regulations. Preston and Mike discussed the potential growth of vertical farms and indoor farming, which could significantly impact the grid due to their high productivity. Mike pointed out that a 1-acre vertical farm can produce as much as a 40-acre traditional farm, and this trend is expected to grow as these farms currently only make up 3 to 5% of the market. They touched on the emerging marijuana industry in Oklahoma, which could further strain the grid. Mike suggested that in the next 12 to 18 months, the conversation around the energy market might change due to the rapid growth of these industries. Mike and Preston discussed the potential for identifying valuable projects from a pool of 1,952, specifically for hyperscalers. Preston expressed confidence in their ability to sift through these projects and find valuable opportunities. Ep 279Sustainability in the Age of AI

Chelsea Davis from Atrius, a subsidiary of Acuity Brand, joins us today on ERENEWABLE and The Green Insider Podcast to discuss her role as Senior Sustainability Project Manager. The main topic for the episode was to be the proliferation of data centers and AI, sustainability as a selling point in office spaces, and the impact of regulations on companies. Data Centers and AI Sustainability Mike and Chelsea explored the environmental implications of the expanding number of data centers fueled by AI technology. Chelsea mentioned that despite AI’s potential to tackle ecological issues, the rapid growth of data centers is causing substantial carbon emissions and straining power grids. Tech giants are striving to make their data centers more eco-friendly, but the increasing energy demands might require greater investment in nuclear energy, as discussed at the latest IEA conference on Energy and AI. Sustainability in Office Spaces Discussion The conversation shifted to the evolving trends in office spaces, with a focus on sustainability. Chelsea pointed out that corporate tenants are increasingly seeking low-carbon work environments, with many individuals preferring to work in green buildings. She also highlighted that building owners are recognizing the cost-saving benefits of energy-efficient measures, especially with the rising insurance costs linked to climate change. Chelsea elaborated on how Acuity Brands’ Atrius software offers insights into energy usage and resource consumption, helping to detect anomalies and assess greenhouse gas emissions. Mike asked about the software’s ability to integrate various building systems, and Chelsea confirmed that Atreus is designed to be integration-agnostic, providing a comprehensive view across a building portfolio. Environmental Reporting and Regulatory Changes Chelsea and Mike discussed the evolving regulatory landscape, particularly in the US and EU, with a focus on environmental reporting. Chelsea highlighted the impending deadlines for EU-based companies to submit their first CSR reports in 2025 and emphasized the growing significance of local ordinances in the US. Mike noted that while European companies have been accustomed to reporting for some time, the new regulations are primarily impacting US companies. They concurred that US companies operating in Europe and vice versa will need to expedite their environmental reporting efforts. Chelsea also pointed out that smaller organizations, lacking dedicated sustainability teams, are finding it challenging to manage the new responsibilities associated with reporting. Chelsea Bio:  Chelsea Davis is the Product Manager for Atrius, Acuity Brands. Motivated by a passion for the intersection of global sustainability, data and technology, she works on solutions for sustainable buildings, streamlined operations, and personal experiences. However, only a limited number of people can participate in these programs, making it essential to sign up early to secure a spot. Community Solar Projects and Expansion Jared explained that community solar projects are incentivized by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), offering a 10% discount on total utility rates. He also mentioned that community solar projects are expanding to other states, including Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California. Mike expressed interest in the system’s simplicity and its potential to benefit both the environment and the community. Jared clarified that there are three ways to acquire subscribers for community solar projects: through community choice aggregators, utilities, or third-party companies that sign up subscribers on behalf of companies like his. The discussion concluded with Jared stating that his company is currently operating in five community solar states and is looking to expand to more states in the future. To Reach Net Zero, Everyone Needs to Just Get Started

Today on ERENEWABLE and The Green Insider is Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO of the Global Network for Zero.  He has had quite a journey, transitioning from technology consulting to environmental advocacy. His insights on achieving net zero emissions by 2050 are crucial, especially given the commitments and investments being made globally. The emphasis on understanding one’s carbon footprint and developing both immediate and long-term strategies is key to making meaningful progress. The discussion on energy efficiency strategies for commercial buildings and the importance of high-quality carbon credits also highlights the multifaceted approach needed to tackle climate change. It’s clear that sustainability, ESG, and net zero strategies are becoming increasingly important on a global scale. Mahesh’s emphasis on measuring actions and their impact is spot on. It’s crucial to have a clear pathway for improvement and to scale up efforts across all sectors. The example of New York City’s Local Law 97 is a great illustration of how local initiatives can be replicated elsewhere. Customized solutions tailored to local economies are essential, as a one-size-fits-all approach often falls short. The idea that the United States should lead the global conversation on sustainability and net-zero leadership is inspiring. The discussion on environmental goals and their impact on future generations highlights the urgency of acting now.
