There's all kinds of deer hunters out there. Chances are if you are a deer hunter you do things differently than I do, and that's okay. We all probably follow much of the same conventional wisdom, but that's something we all should re-evaluate. That's the name of the game for Clint McCoy. He treats each buck as a blank slate and carefully studies their habits to assemble a hunt plan that fits the profile of each buck he plans to hunt. This is a dream hunt for this prairie boy. The Sandhills of Nebraska is a sacred place for those who love prairie. Many refer to this region as "The Last Prairie." It is a landscape very different from most other places you'll find. And mule deer call it home. The early season is my favorite time to hunt whitetails. Their habits are much more predictable, the hunting pressure is much lower, the weather is beautiful, and there are more deer in more places. But as great as this point in the season may be, it still must be hunted correctly in order to avoid blowing up future opportunities later in the season. Food plotting is a major aspect of the hunting world, and much of it is as Doug Duren says "bringing sand to the beach." Now of course all popular food plot species get some of the desired effect, but what if we could get even more out of our food plotting efforts. That's where perennial food plots come in. I will always hold to the belief that good shed hunters are the folks you want to learn from for locating game. They spend so much time observing and learning the habitat of the animals they are trying to collect antlers from that they are just bound to learn where these critters spend their time. Weston McArthur is one of these people. He runs a popular YouTube channel known as Rise and Shed, and although sheds are his main passion, hunting is of great importance to him as well. Have you ever wondered how hunters know the age of a deer they harvest, or at least are targeting? The same goes for elk, moose, bears, really anything furry that a hunter might target. Well their guess is based off of some sort of associated characteristics that match known ages as determined by scientists who examine the teeth of mammals. Matson's Lab in Manhattan, MT has been practicing this aging science for decades and have become the most recognized name in the animal aging business. I was fortunate enough to talk with Carolyn and AJ about the tooth cementum aging process. It's a fascinating science that his brought them some incredibly interesting opportunities.
