On January 2, 1996, a 31 year old gas station clerk is shot and killed on the job in Kerrville, Texas. The killer then forces his friend at gunpoint, who is waiting outside, to steal $11,000 in cash and checks. The men are quickly arrested, with the accomplice leading police to the murder weapon. Despite having no knowledge of the plan beforehand, the accomplice is charged with murder, along with the killer. What ensues is a nightmare legal battle for one man to prove that while he was at the scene and is proven guilty, he is not deserving of the punishment he faces. On July 18th, 2016, 32-year-old Jessica Loraine Berry gets into a red car with a friend. She is never seen again. Six days later, Jessica’s family reports her missing to the local police. Jessica’s family points them to a local veteran: 47-year-old Richard Allen Hurt. The detectives interview Richard briefly, but their investigation slows down quickly because Jessica is a known drug addict. Investigators suspect Jessica is not missing, and is keeping a low-profile during a drug binge. But on July 29th, Jessica’s remains are discovered. Her body was dismembered, stored in black trash bags, and hidden under a home improvement construction site. The homeowners found Jessica’s remains right before their handyman, Richard, was scheduled to pour concrete on the area. Richard admits to dismembering and hiding Jessica’s body, but refutes any involvement in her death. On April 10th, 2001, actress 26-year-old Rebeca Peña works on the film Muhammad Ali in Miami, Florida. Late that night, Rebeca leaves the set and drives to her Miramar apartment. No one ever sees her again. Six days later, fishermen find a suitcase floating in a Miami canal with Rebeca’s body inside. The police investigation reveals that Rebeca’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, 26-year-old Berkley Calvin Curtis Jr., may have been involved in Rebeca’s death. For years, Rebeca accused Berkley of physical and mental abuse. But Berkley is quickly cleared when his new girlfriend provides him with an airtight alibi the same night Rebeca was murdered. Berkley’s name is cleared. He moves across the country, raises Rebeca’s daughter, and starts a new family. But, 20 years later, on December 14th, 2020, the police arrest now 46-year-old Berkley. On July 2, 2005, 911 is called to respond to a 2 year old adopted girl in Manassas, Virginia, who’s not breathing. At the hospital, medical staff find the girl has suffered severe internal injuries. Not only are the injuries quickly determined to be suspicious, but they were sustained a full day before medical attention is sought for the toddler. Hospital staff quickly notify the authorities. On Monday, September 26th, 1983, 21-year-old Sidney Ann Merrick drives from Salt Lake City to Park City, Utah, to run an errand for her boss. While heading eastbound on I-80, Sidney’s car breaks down. Less than an hour later, Sidney’s body is discovered on an off-ramp near Parleys Summit. She’s been stabbed to death. Eyewitnesses traveling along the freeway place 33-year-old Wesley Allen Tuttle at the scene. Tuttle is apprehended while trying to flee the country and swiftly convicted of first-degree murder. Shortly after, Tuttle escapes prison for five months. Then, the Utah Supreme Court changes Tuttle’s conviction to second-degree murder and significantly reduce his sentence. But, in 2008, new DNA testing proves Tuttle sexually assaulted and murdered another young woman: 14-year-old Lisa Lynne Chambers. On August 22, 2010, a 22 year old Salvadoran man is repeatedly stabbed to death in the backseat of a car in broad daylight in Charlotte, North Carolina. Witnesses to the brutal slaying call in the attack to 911. Straight away law enforcement is sure this is a drug deal gone wrong. Later that day a 17 year old young woman and her 18 year old boyfriend are apprehended at a hotel, along with the murder weapon. At the time of the murder, Charlotte is awash with heroin, so officers aren’t surprised about the nature of the killing. But when the identity of one of the suspects in particular is released to the public, everyone is shocked beyond words. From 2002 to 2017, 63-year-old Dr. Ricardo Cruciani practices medicine as an esteemed anesthesiologist, neurologist, and pain management specialist. He works in multiple renowned medical facilities where he treats patients with severe chronic pain by providing them with extremely high doses of prescription opioid painkillers. Cruciani’s work in pain management is widely lauded, and his peers consider him a gifted physician. But, in 2016, Cruciani’s employer receives eight complaints about his behavior. Reports indicate that he is sexually inappropriate toward his female patients. By September 2017, Cruciani is arrested on the charges of indecent exposure, indecent assault, and more. Dozens of former female patients come forward, claiming that Cruciani purposefully overprescribed them powerful painkillers so that they would develop an opioid addiction. Then, Cruciani leveraged his patients’ need for opioids to force them into unwanted sexual acts. On October 17, 1996, a 41 year old repair shop owner and father of three is bludgeoned to death at his home in St Amant, Louisiana, by an intruder. The killer leaves a bloody baseball bat in the victims’ bathtub, but there appears to be little forensic evidence indicating who’s responsible. For detectives, without any leads or solid direct evidence, it seems a confession will be the only way to solve the case. It won’t be until over a year later, in November 1997, that law enforcement would apprehend the killer. Tragically, by this stage he’d killed another five people. In 1984, 13-year-old Allison Tinsley moves out of her abusive mother’s home in South Carolina. Like a real-life fairytale, Allison is going to live with her rich and loving father, 36-year-old Dwaine Tinsley, in Los Angeles. It's perfect, until one day Dwaine sneaks into Allison’s bedroom and molests her. From then on, for five years, Dwaine would sexually abuse Allison multiple times a week. All the while, Dwaine was the creator of Hustler magazine’s Chester the Molester comic strip, which depicts a perverted old man who tricks little girls into having sex with him. In 1989, Allison informs the police of her father’s abuse, and Dwaine is sentenced to six years in prison. But due to a technicality, his conviction is overturned after two years. On July 21, 2019, two brothers from Wisconsin aged in their twenties and thirties go missing after visiting a rural property outside Braymer, Missouri. In the following days, police learn that a 25 year old cattle farmer from the Braymer area may know something about the disappearances. He admits to driving the vehicle the brothers took to the farm, but he hasn’t seen them since. When human remains are discovered at the site 10 days after the brothers were last seen, police realize the truth behind the brothers disappearance is darker than they could have imagined. It’s not long before investigators zero in on the cattle farmer, who owes the brothers a six figure sum.
