When you think of public places where children should all be expected to feel safe, school is one of them. Church is another. Sometimes in such spaces, it’s not uncommon to come across unusual, even weird people. But you can’t control who attends a school or turns up to church service on Sundays. Usually we can brush off interactions with these people as just odd encounters. But sometimes, people who make us uncomfortable come into our lives not only for an extended period but in a way involving close contact. If we’re lucky, they eventually drop out of their lives and we don’t hear anything about them ever again. But what happens when you receive sudden news that takes you straight back to your unpleasant memories of someone, and you learn they’re accused of the very thing you always suspected but could never confirm? On December 9th, 2015, the former Suffolk County Chief of Police James Burke is arrested for assaulting Chris Loeb three years earlier. Back in December 2012, Chris stole several items from Burke’s police vehicle, including a black duffel bag with an alleged homemade snuff film inside of it. Concerned that Chris would reveal the contents of his duffel bag, Burke struck Chris repeatedly and threatened to kill him. In November 2016, Burke is sentenced to 46 months in prison for his crimes. But, during the investigation of Burke, more of his corruption was revealed. From January 2012 to October 2015, Burke single-handedly slowed the progress of the Long Island Serial Killer case. He shut out the FBI, forced out detectives on the case, and stopped the searches for more victims. Valerie Lyn Mack was a loving sister, a caring mother, and a dynamic woman During her childhood, Valerie trekked from foster home to foster home for almost a decade. But, when she was nine years old, Valerie was adopted by two loving parents: Edwin and JoAnn Mack. Valerie thrived with the Macks. Her grades improved, she participated in theater, and she showed real leadership potential. But, throughout Valerie’s teen and adult years, she would struggle financially, battle drug abuse, and become entrenched in sex work. By the fall of 2000, 24-year-old Valerie stopped communicating with her family. Deeply concerned, the Macks attempted to file a missing person report for Valerie, but the New Jersey police refused. On May 1st of 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert gets into a black SUV with her hired driver and de facto security guard, Michael Pak. Shannan and Michael travel from New York City’s Manhattan to a wealthy gated community on Long Island known as Oak Beach. Shannan, a sex worker, enters the home of her client, Joseph Brewer. Shannan Gilbert was an aspiring actress, singer, and writer. After overcoming her tumultuous childhood, Shannan moved to New York City for her big break. In the early morning of June 6th, 2010, 22-year-old Megan Waterman walks out of a hotel on Long Island and is never seen alive again. A week prior, Megan and her boyfriend, Akeem Cruz, traveled from Maine to New York for business purposes. Megan was a sex worker and Akeem was her pimp. Every few months, the couple would go to New York so Megan could meet with clients for sex work. Once they had made a suitable profit, Megan and Akeem returned home to Maine. But this time, Megan couldn’t go home. On December 13th of 2010, seven months after her disappearance, Megan’s skeletal remains are discovered on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. Also found near Megan’s remains are the remains of three other victims. All four victims are female sex workers in their twenties. On the evening of May 27, 2021, police in Houston, Texas, receive a report of a missing 5 year old boy. Everyone in the youngster’s family are beside themselves with worry and make public pleas for his return. A large scale search search operation commences, but as the days pass with no further developments, the outlook isn’t good. Finally a tip comes in. But when investigators follow up, it’s tragically too late. Only six days after the young boy is reported missing, his body is found in a motel room, and he’s died from blunt force trauma. The next day, the first of several arrests in the case is swiftly made, but everyone is stunned when the alleged perpetrator’s identity is revealed. On the evening of July 20th, 2011, 21-year-old La’Reko Antonious Williams goes to the movies with his girlfriend in Charlotte, North Carolina. As they prepare to go home using public transportation, the young couple begins arguing. The situation turns violent. Several bystanders call 911, and Police Officer Michael Forbes arrives on the scene. After a tense conversation, Officer Forbes commands La’Reko to get on the ground. When La’Reko doesn’t comply, Officer Forbes tases him in the chest. La’Reko falls to the ground, conscious but in pain. Then, Officer Forbes tases him for a second time. Minutes later, La’Reko dies from cardiac arrest. In the years to come, La’Reko’s family, community, and the Charlotte court system will try to understand if Officer Forbes’s second tase was excessive force. The city of Hudson, Wisconsin was rocked when Dan O’Connell and James Ellison were found gunned down in the office of The O’Connell Funeral home. On January 2, 1996, a 31 year old gas station clerk is shot and killed on the job in Kerrville, Texas. The killer then forces his friend at gunpoint, who is waiting outside, to steal $11,000 in cash and checks. The men are quickly arrested, with the accomplice leading police to the murder weapon. Despite having no knowledge of the plan beforehand, the accomplice is charged with murder, along with the killer. What ensues is a nightmare legal battle for one man to prove that while he was at the scene and is proven guilty, he is not deserving of the punishment he faces. On July 18th, 2016, 32-year-old Jessica Loraine Berry gets into a red car with a friend. She is never seen again. Six days later, Jessica’s family reports her missing to the local police. Jessica’s family points them to a local veteran: 47-year-old Richard Allen Hurt. The detectives interview Richard briefly, but their investigation slows down quickly because Jessica is a known drug addict. Investigators suspect Jessica is not missing, and is keeping a low-profile during a drug binge. But on July 29th, Jessica’s remains are discovered. Her body was dismembered, stored in black trash bags, and hidden under a home improvement construction site. The homeowners found Jessica’s remains right before their handyman, Richard, was scheduled to pour concrete on the area. Richard admits to dismembering and hiding Jessica’s body, but refutes any involvement in her death. On April 10th, 2001, actress 26-year-old Rebeca Peña works on the film Muhammad Ali in Miami, Florida. Late that night, Rebeca leaves the set and drives to her Miramar apartment. No one ever sees her again. Six days later, fishermen find a suitcase floating in a Miami canal with Rebeca’s body inside. On July 2, 2005, 911 is called to respond to a 2 year old adopted girl in Manassas, Virginia, who’s not breathing. At the hospital, medical staff find the girl has suffered severe internal injuries. On Monday, September 26th, 1983, 21-year-old Sidney Ann Merrick drives from Salt Lake City to Park City, Utah, to run an errand for her boss. While heading eastbound on I-80, Sidney’s car breaks down. Less than an hour later, Sidney’s body is discovered on an off-ramp near Parleys Summit. She’s been stabbed to death. Eyewitnesses traveling along the freeway place 33-year-old Wesley Allen Tuttle at the scene. Tuttle is apprehended while trying to flee the country and swiftly convicted of first-degree murder. Shortly after, Tuttle escapes prison for five months. Then, the Utah Supreme Court changes Tuttle’s conviction to second-degree murder and significantly reduce his sentence. But, in 2008, new DNA testing proves Tuttle sexually assaulted and murdered another young woman: 14-year-old Lisa Lynne Chambers. On August 22, 2010, a 22 year old Salvadoran man is repeatedly stabbed to death in the backseat of a car in broad daylight in Charlotte, North Carolina. Witnesses to the brutal slaying call in the attack to 911. Straight away law enforcement is sure this is a drug deal gone wrong. Later that day a 17 year old young woman and her 18 year old boyfriend are apprehended at a hotel, along with the murder weapon. At the time of the murder, Charlotte is awash with heroin, so officers aren’t surprised about the nature of the killing. But when the identity of one of the suspects in particular is released to the public, everyone is shocked beyond words. On September 3, 2017, a 35 year old mother of three goes missing from Wyoming, Michigan, after failing to pick up her three children from her 38 year old ex-boyfriend’s house. On June 29, 2001, the badly beaten body of a 58 year old Native American man is pulled from his burning home in Wichita, Kansas. The victim has been robbed and left for dead before his attackers set the house ablaze. Within hours, police learn that an 18 year old man and a 16 year old teen may know something about the murder. On November 26, 1981, four men are killed and two others are wounded in a shooting massacre on Thanksgiving night in Chicago, Illinois. The murders make headlines as being the worst multiple slayings in the city in four years. In the coming days, police arrest four Mexican nationals over the killings, who also all happen to belong to one family. It soon emerges that the circumstances leading to the massacre are buried in a deep and ongoing dispute between the accused and victims families, resulting in bloodshed. From 2002 to 2017, 63-year-old Dr. Ricardo Cruciani practices medicine as an esteemed anesthesiologist, neurologist, and pain management specialist. He works in multiple renowned medical facilities where he treats patients with severe chronic pain by providing them with extremely high doses of prescription opioid painkillers. Cruciani’s work in pain management is widely lauded, and his peers consider him a gifted physician. But, in 2016, Cruciani’s employer receives eight complaints about his behavior. Reports indicate that he is sexually inappropriate toward his female patients. By September 2017, Cruciani is arrested on the charges of indecent exposure, indecent assault, and more. Dozens of former female patients come forward, claiming that Cruciani purposefully overprescribed them powerful painkillers so that they would develop an opioid addiction. Then, Cruciani leveraged his patients’ need for opioids to force them into unwanted sexual acts.
