The First Degree

On June 28th of 1997, the dismembered torso of a young Black woman on Long Island, New York. The torso had several distinct marks, including a horizontal 6” scar that was likely indicative of a C-section and a small, heart-shaped peach tattoo. Due to this unique tattoo, this unidentified Jane Doe became known as “Peaches.” More of Peaches’ remains were discovered on April 11th of 2011, during a massive search of Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. This search began after Suffolk County officers accidentally discovered four female homicide victims and determined Gilgo Beach was a dumping ground for the still at-large Long Island Serial Killer. While combing Gilgo Beach, investigators also found the remains of an unidentified girl between the ages of one and four. She is widely known as Baby Doe, and was later found to be Peaches’ daughter. After the Gilgo Four victims were discovered in December of 2010, detectives are looking for more victims of the Long Island Serial Killer. So, in the spring of 2011, law enforcement officers conduct a massive search of Long Island’s Gilgo Beach and surrounding areas. On April 4th of 2011, two sets of human remains are found: Jane Doe #6, later identified as 24-year-old Valerie Mack, and the yet-to-be-identified Gilgo Beach Doe. Though Gilgo Beach Doe’s remains were skeletal, forensic experts determine that they were Asian, between 17 and 23 years old, 5’6” tall, missing several teeth, and may have had a musculoskeletal disorder that affected how they walked. For years, officials referred to Gilgo Beach Doe as “Unidentified Asian Male,” despite evidence suggesting that Gilgo Beach Doe was a transgender woman. On June 14, 2021, 911 is called to respond to the scene of an accident in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In a local river, a vehicle is submerged, the driver having lost control after leaving a nearby parking lot. Sadly, it’s too late for the 37 year old man, who drowns at the scene. But not everyone who knows the driver is convinced about what happened. There’s questions about how the vehicle ended up in the water, and some of those close to the victim feel something isn’t right, especially when the cause of the accident isn’t made clear. Ever since she was a little girl, Maureen L. Brainard-Barnes had a generous heart. From stray kittens to down-on-their-luck friends, Maureen was happy to share her money, living space, and more with those in need—often leaving herself with little. Born and raised in the southeast corner of Connecticut, Maureen ended her academic career at age 16 when she realized she was pregnant with her first child. With no high school diploma, Maureen set her sights on becoming a model. In 2004, Maureen posted her photos on a supposed “modeling” website and, inadvertently, began her journey into sex work. By July of 2007, Maureen only did sex work part-time to make ends meet when her notorious generosity created financial hardship. On March 1st of 2007, 46-year-old Richard “Doug” Douglas White prepares to close his small business for the day when two men enter his shop. Life wasn’t always simple for 22-year-old Megan Waterman. She was a single mother, in a relationship with a questionable man, and struggling to make ends meet financially. On February 24th of 2022, 57-year-old Cynthia Marie Cole of Jensen Beach, Florida vanishes into thin air. That morning, she’d walked on the beach. That evening, she’d attended a street festival with a few friends. But, by the next day, Cynthia is missing without a trace of evidence left behind. On March 1st, Cynthia’s friends and family report her disappearance to the local authorities. Within days, investigators discover Cynthia’s decomposing body inside her own septic tank. The process of extricating Cynthia’s submerged body is arduous and dangerous. From the moment she was born on June 24th, 1985, Melissa Mary Barthelemy was loved. Between her mother, father, and siblings, Melissa was raised alongside people who truly cared about her. On July 4, 2016, 911 is called to respond to a 4 year old girl in Athens, Alabama, who’s not breathing. At the hospital, the youngster is placed on life support while her family hope and pray she regains consciousness. But three days later, with no hope of recovery, the little girl’s distraught parents make the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support. On December 9th, 2015, the former Suffolk County Chief of Police James Burke is arrested for assaulting Chris Loeb three years earlier. Back in December 2012, Chris stole several items from Burke’s police vehicle, including a black duffel bag with an alleged homemade snuff film inside of it. Concerned that Chris would reveal the contents of his duffel bag, Burke struck Chris repeatedly and threatened to kill him. In November 2016, Burke is sentenced to 46 months in prison for his crimes. But, during the investigation of Burke, more of his corruption was revealed. From January 2012 to October 2015, Burke single-handedly slowed the progress of the Long Island Serial Killer case. He shut out the FBI, forced out detectives on the case, and stopped the searches for more victims. In the early morning of June 6th, 2010, 22-year-old Megan Waterman walks out of a hotel on Long Island and is never seen alive again. A week prior, Megan and her boyfriend, Akeem Cruz, traveled from Maine to New York for business purposes. Megan was a sex worker and Akeem was her pimp. Every few months, the couple would go to New York so Megan could meet with clients for sex work. Once they had made a suitable profit, Megan and Akeem returned home to Maine. On the evening of May 27, 2021, police in Houston, Texas, receive a report of a missing 5 year old boy. Everyone in the youngster’s family are beside themselves with worry and make public pleas for his return. On the evening of July 20th, 2011, 21-year-old La’Reko Antonious Williams goes to the movies with his girlfriend in Charlotte, North Carolina. As they prepare to go home using public transportation, the young couple begins arguing. The situation turns violent. Several bystanders call 911, and Police Officer Michael Forbes arrives on the scene. After a tense conversation, Officer Forbes commands La’Reko to get on the ground. When La’Reko doesn’t comply, Officer Forbes tases him in the chest. La’Reko falls to the ground, conscious but in pain. Then, Officer Forbes tases him for a second time. Minutes later, La’Reko dies from cardiac arrest. In the years to come, La’Reko’s family, community, and the Charlotte court system will try to understand if Officer Forbes’s second tase was excessive force. On January 2, 1996, a 31 year old gas station clerk is shot and killed on the job in Kerrville, Texas. The killer then forces his friend at gunpoint, who is waiting outside, to steal $11,000 in cash and checks. The men are quickly arrested, with the accomplice leading police to the murder weapon. Despite having no knowledge of the plan beforehand, the accomplice is charged with murder, along with the killer. What ensues is a nightmare legal battle for one man to prove that while he was at the scene and is proven guilty, he is not deserving of the punishment he faces. On July 18th, 2016, 32-year-old Jessica Loraine Berry gets into a red car with a friend. She is never seen again. Six days later, Jessica’s family reports her missing to the local police. Jessica’s family points them to a local veteran: 47-year-old Richard Allen Hurt. The detectives interview Richard briefly, but their investigation slows down quickly because Jessica is a known drug addict. Investigators suspect Jessica is not missing, and is keeping a low-profile during a drug binge. But on July 29th, Jessica’s remains are discovered. Her body was dismembered, stored in black trash bags, and hidden under a home improvement construction site. The homeowners found Jessica’s remains right before their handyman, Richard, was scheduled to pour concrete on the area. Richard admits to dismembering and hiding Jessica’s body, but refutes any involvement in her death. On April 10th, 2001, actress 26-year-old Rebeca Peña works on the film Muhammad Ali in Miami, Florida. Late that night, Rebeca leaves the set and drives to her Miramar apartment. No one ever sees her again. Six days later, fishermen find a suitcase floating in a Miami canal with Rebeca’s body inside.
