ADHD Mama, wellness blogger & author Susy Parker shares how to live, love and laugh as she studies the superpowers of her daughter
Susy Parker is an author, wellness blogger & ADHD mama. Her eldest daughter Seren, (who she refers to as Sarah in her book), was diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety and oppositional defiance disorder when she was just six years old. Susy came to learn that the most important thing to help her daughter thrive with ADHD was acceptance, love, positivity and connection. Finding hope, learning to launch and 'Franken-studying' your own path with teacher-mentor, Seth Perler
"Biography of a Struggling Student: My Story". This is what Brian Seth Perler sends to me when I ask for his bio. Hah! I certainly can relate to that- I was that kid too. He struggled really hard during high school and then failed out of two colleges, finally returning home and moving in with his grandmother. Things were not great. Through keeping his chin up and repeatedly asking for help- which was also tough to do, he finally got a minimum wage job working with students at a company called 'At Your School'. There he found something that he was good at, a wonderful mentor and a passion that continues to fuel his path. I hope you will feel encouraged by getting to know Seth Perler and 'the rest of his story' in this episode of Faster Than Normal. ADHD Cardiovascular Nurse Clinician turned Theater Marketing & Promotions wiz, Elizabeth Manley discusses her many techniques and discoveries.
This episode is underwritten by HealthIQ, and we couldn't be happier to have them! See, one of the things I'm so passionate about when I talk about how I use my ADHD to my advantage is exercise, right? It's obvious that a workout in the morning greatly boosts my brainpower and lets me use my faster brain to do great things. But here's the other benefit of exercise: Engagement in high-intensity exercise once per week decreases risk for cardiovascular mortality by 39% for men and 51% for women, and according to a 2009 Study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, men who did high-intensity exercise have a 35% lower risk of all-cause mortality. For women the risk reduction is 44%. THAT'S HUGE. If you're exercising to improve how you manage your ADHD, AND you're getting the extra benefits of a much healthier body, then guess what: You should be paying less for your life insurance! That's where Health IQ comes in. Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more. 56% of Health IQ customers save between 4-33% on their life insurance, and these savings are exclusive to Health IQ. They save their customers up to 33% because physically active people have a 56% lower risk of heart disease, 20% lower risk of cancer and a 58% lower risk of diabetes compared to people who are inactive. Like saving money on your car insurance for being a good driver, Health IQ saves you money on your life insurance for living a health conscious lifestyle. Learn more and get a free quote at healthiq.com/FTN Hello everybody and thank you for listening! Lenore Skenazy is president of the new non-profit Let Grow, dedicated to "Future-Proofing Our Kids and Our Country." Now she lectures internationally, from Microsoft to Dreamworks to the Sydney Opera House, and has been profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The New Yorker. And here she is on The Daily Show! A journalist herself, Lenore has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. Yep. Mad. Randy's best tip: Turn off email notifications. This episode is inspiring. I'm a huge fan of this guy. No doubt you will be, too. Enjoy!

Win - Win. The best part….people love receiving them! You can get more information at fitkit.com. Check them out. I love them. Now then - Welcome to Tim Fargo, this week's FTN guest! Tim has one of the shortest bios known to man, which essentially says "started a company. Went bankrupt. Started another one. Sold it for $50mm. Now run Social Jukebox." That's it. Obviously, I think there's a little more to the man than that, and you'll hear about it on this interview. And it's a good one. Got kids who have ever failed? You ever failed? This is the episode for you. And of course, Tim is massively ADHD. We knew that from his bio, though. Enjoy!

Ep 79The ADHD Founder of the Spartan Race, Joe De Sena
You know those races where people jump over fire pits, carry 80 pound bags of sand up a hill, and crawl under barbed wire? Of course you do. If you're ADHD, chances are you've done it. A mere marathon? That's for regular people. Am I right? Welcome to the world of the Spartan Race. This week, we've got the founder on FTN, and, you guessed it, he's massively ADHD. So ADHD, in fact, that he wouldn't shut off his email for the entire interview. You'll see what I mean when you listen Joe De Sena - the founder and CEO of Spartan Race has demonstrated his entrepreneurial drive since his pre-teens. From selling fireworks at age eight, to building a multimillion-dollar pool business in college, to creating a Wall Street trading firm, and now the world's fastest growing sports movement, De Sena is a living definition of the word entrepreneur, and proof that ADHD can truly be your secret weapon. Following a successful career on Wall Street, De Sena moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont to operate an organic farm, a bed and breakfast, and a general store for hikers. It was here his passion grew for ultramarathons, adventure races, and endurance events; and thus the idea for the Spartan Race was born. With more than 200 events in 30+ countries planned for 2017, Spartan Race has more than 1 million global participants offering open heats for all fitness levels and ages, as well as competitive and elite heats. The company has more than 5 million passionate social media followers, health and wellness products, and two popular NBC television series, making obstacle racing one of the fastest growing sports—and lifestyles— in the world. As a leader in the sport, Spartan Race is the first obstacle racing company to feature timing and global rankings. Enjoy the episode! It's a wild one!
Ep 781-800-GOT-ADHD? With Guest Brian Scudamore
Hi there, gang! As this episode publishes, I'm in a plane somewhere above the Pacific Ocean, as I take what I'm pretty sure is my last flight to Asia this year. Two days in Hong Kong, then back to NYC. But that gives me lots and lots of time to write, and as you know, my best writing and best ideas come to me on airplanes. Our guest this week had his game-changing idea come to him in the drive-through line at a McDonald's. Yes, seriously! Brian Scudamore is the Founder & CEO of three franchise companies; an entrepreneur recognized for his passion, vision, and faith in people. Brian started (and is best known for) his first business, 1-800- GOT-JUNK? in Vancouver, Canada at the age of 18. He went on to revolutionize the junk removal industry. Today, 1-800- GOT-JUNK? has more than 850 trucks on the road throughout 170 locations in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Accolades include Fortune Small Business' Best Bosses Award, Globe & Mail's Top 40 under 40, the International Franchise Association's Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007, and induction into the Young Presidents Organization in 2014, as well as Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization CEO Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement in 2012. 1-800- GOT-JUNK? is a three-time winner of a prestigious "Best Company To Work For" award in British Columbia. And yes... As you guessed, Brian is massively, massively ADHD. Enjoy the interview! It's a good one!
Ep 77Radical Candor With Best-Selling Author Kim Scott
Hey there everyone! Psyched to welcome a best-selling author this week, Kim Scott! Kim is the author of the NYT & WSJ bestseller Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss without Losing your Humanity. Kim led AdSense, YouTube, and Doubleclick teams at Google and then joined Apple University to develop and teach "Managing at Apple." Kim has been a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, Twitter, and several other tech companies. Additional information is available athttps://www.radicalcandor.com/ Follow her on Twitter @kimballscott This episode is fun, because we talk about what it's like to manage people – specifically those who are neuroatypical. Got employees? Heck, got friends? Listen to this episode. You'll learn a lot. My favorite line: "Radical Candor sounds different with each person to whom you talk" Enjoy the podcast! As always, leave us a comment below, drop us a review on iTunes (PLEASE!) and of course, subscribe to the podcast if you haven't already! Know of anyone you think should be on the FTN podcast? Ep 76Riding for Focus, with The Specialized Foundation's Ted Theocheung and Dr. Kimberly Price
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm an avid cyclist. Whether I'm doing leisurely loops around Central Park, or hundred mile rides while training for my next Ironman, if I'm exercising and not running, I can either be found on my Specialized Venge, or my Peloton spin bike. Not only is it amazing exercise, not only is it a bicycle seat a great place from which to see the world, but for me, probably the best benefit of cycling is the massive dopamine hit that I get from ten minutes into my ride, that lasts for several hours after the ride has ended. There's truly nothing like it. That's why, when I found out that Specialized Bicycles had a non-profit component called The Specialized Foundation, and that The Specialized Foundation focuses on getting school kids with ADHD on bicycles as a way to temper the negative effects of ADHD, there was absolutely no question that I had to get the heads of the foundation on the FTN Podcast. This amazing organization is doing incredible things for kids with ADHD, and they're growing by the day. I'm so honored to be joined by both Ted Theocheung, the CEO of the Specialized Foundation, and Kimberly Price, Ph.D., Director of Research and School Programs for the Specialized Foundation. This is, yet again, more proof that exercise is one of the key components to utilizing the faster brain of someone with ADHD. The research is strong, the foundation is doing amazing things to prove that. This is an interview you don't want to miss, whether you have children or not! I guess Queen was right when they said "Get on you bikes and ride!"
Ep 75Hey Boss: I'm ADHD! With Guest Bruce Tulgan
Let's face it - If you're a manager, chances are, you're going to be managing some neuro-atypical employees, if you're not already. Considering some studies are saying that four out of ten new hires in the next ten years are going to be on the spectrum of ADD, ADHD, OCD, or similar, how you start dealing with these employees now will determine how easy it is to get your new hires later. That's where this week's guest comes in. Bruce Tulgan is internationally recognized as the leading expert on young people in the workplace and one of the leading experts on leadership and management. Bruce is a best-selling author, an adviser to business leaders all over the world, and a sought-after keynote speaker and management trainer. Since 1995, Bruce has worked with tens of thousands of leaders and managers in hundreds of organizations ranging from Aetna to Wal-Mart; from the Army to the YMCA. He's currently the chairman of Rainmaker Thinking, and talks to us today about what bosses and managers need to know about the next generation of employees. Enjoy!
Getting your ADHD Side Hustle On, with Guest Chris Guillebeau
Out of all the fun things about having ADHD, one of the best might be that you see absolutely nothing wrong with setting insane goals and then reaching them. Today's guest has done that and so much more. Chris Guillebeau set out to visit every single country in the world before he turned 35. He did it. He's authored several bestselling books, including Side Hustle, The $100 Startup, and The Art of Nonconformity. He hosts the World Domination Summit every summer in Portland, Oregon, and his daily podcast, Side Hustle School, is downloaded more than two million times a month. Not bad for someone with massive ADHD, huh? Take a listen and enjoy this fun interview with Chris!
Ep 73ADHD In a Strange Land, with Guest Christopher Walker
Welcome to Faster Than Normal, Episode 72! This week, we talk to Christopher Walker, via a digital connection all the way from Japan! Sometimes, the best way to get a handle on your ADHD is to leave the office, or work from a new place. Christopher took that to an extreme, settling in Kanagawa, Japan, after eight years in the US Military! Originally from North Carolina, Chris opens up in this week's episode, and talks about his experience in the military, handling his ADHD, and trying to manage ADHD while also trying to learn the language! It's a great interview that you're going to enjoy! As always, thanks for listening! And hey: Did you know the FTN book is still a best-seller on Amazon? Check it out!

Ep 69The Music Episode! With DJ John Michael DiSpirito
Say hey to DJ John Michael! He's the official DJ in Residence at Peloton Cycle (now known as OnePeloton,) he's trained under Junior Vasquez, and knows more 80s trivia than you do. This isn't assumption, this is fact. DJ John Michael gives us 30+ minutes of over the top interview, on topics as wide-ranging as music as a calming influence, "taking back your brain" from the background processes, and somehow, we wound up also touching on the 80s TV Show "The Facts of Life," as well as Game of Thrones, the best dance mixes, and of course, Broadway. There's never been a more ADHD-centric interview in the history of the FTN Podcast! You're going to love this one. I've listened to it three times already, and I was there when we recorded it! Enjoy!
Ep 68Humor, Addiction, and Fear with Comedian Ken Perlstein
First off - GREAT NEWS: The Faster Than Normal Book goes live in less than a month! Won't you help support the launch by sharing this Thunderclap with your social channels? The more people who share it, the more we can help the world realize that ADHD is a GIFT, not a curse! From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Welcome to another episode of Faster Than Normal! We've skipped a few weeks in August, because we were getting the Faster Than Normal BOOK ready for an October 3rd launch date! We couldn't be happier with how it turned out, and we hope you'll love it, too! But back to the podcast! We kick September off with the back-to-school episode, in the respect that I met this week's guest last year, on the first day of preschool for my daughter. Within thirty seconds, we both bonded and there was no question we were both ADHD. Ken Perlstein is an actor and comedian, working in NYC. He's also massively ADHD. He talks openly and honestly on this episode, covering all topics, including addiction, sobriety, ADHD, and heck, he even does an impersonation and cracks a joke or two. You're going to like this one. We're glad you're here!
Ep 67ADHD's Secret Fitness and Exercise Link, With Guests Amie Hoff and Wendy Phillips
Welcome to another episode of Faster Than Normal! This one combines my two favorite topics - What we put in our mouths, and what we sweat out at the gym. Simply put, this episode is all about food and exercise, and the tips shared by our two guests will, I guarantee you, change how you look at what you eat, and what you do for activity. From the fitness side, we speak with Amie Hoff, founder of Hoff Fitness, who shares her fitness knowledge as a corporate fitness consultant, personal trainer, media contributor and public speaker. She thrives as a motivator and role model and is regularly called upon to offer her expertise on both national and local media. You can find more about Amie at her website. From the food side, we speak with Wendy Phillips, MS, RD, CNSC, CLE, FAND is a registered dietitian with a bachelor's and master's degree in clinical nutrition, certified nutrition support clinician, certified lactation educator, and a fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her background includes adult and pediatric nutrition support, public health nutrition, and nutrition advocacy. She first started investigating the science around nutrition and ADHD when her own son was diagnosed at the age of 10, and has since endeavored to educate others on how to use nutrition therapy to thrive with ADHD. Her book is available for purchase on Amazon "Nutrition Management of Children with ADHD" and she can be reached on Facebook and Twitter as Nutrition_4_ADHD. Enjoy this episode! I learned a ton, I hope you do, as well!
Ep 66How to use your ADHD to Start an Airline, with JetBlue Founder David Neeleman
Every once in a long while, you get an amazing interview with someone you've been trying to nail down for years. Someone you think of as a hero, and someone who has been so bold about how they live their life, all you can do is listen and try and hold on. That's today, as I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing David Neeleman, probably best known for founding JetBlue Airlines. He's classic ADHD, (enjoy his story of the tree in his yard) but more importantly, he believes, possibly more than any guest we've had yet, that ADHD is truly a gift, not a curse. He took the time to do this interview as he was driving from one meeting to the next, so while the audio quality is a bit less that we're used to here, it's still perfectly listenable. Do enjoy! David Neeleman is that rarest of entrepreneurs, a man who has created and launched four successful, independent airlines, including the USA's JetBlue and Morris Air, Canada's WestJet and Brazil's Azul. And yes, he's done it all with (not in spite of) his ADHD.
Ep 65Doctor's Orders, with Dr. James Greenblatt, MD
This week on the Faster Than Normal Podcast, we're listening to the doctor. Specifically, Dr. James M. Greenblatt, head of medicine at Walden! Dr. Greenblatt is chief medical officer and vice president of medical services at Walden. He provides medical management, leadership and oversight of Walden's eating disorder programs in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Working with thousands of children, adolescents and adults, Dr. Greenblatt found that each individual has a unique biochemical profile, range of behaviors and treatment needs. Dr. Greenblatt is board-certified in child and adult psychiatry. He received his medical degree and completed his adult psychiatry residency at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ep 62Taking Chances, with Guest Alan Meckler
What can we say about Alan Meckler? The man has a way of seeing things that regular people won't see for the next ten years, and he's done it again and again and again. A wonderful example of neurodiversity, he was diagnosed with Dyslexia at a very early age, and used, of all things, his love of baseball to help him beat it. Alan M. Meckler, Ph.D. was one of the first media professionals to spot the potential of the commercial Internet (1990). He launched INTERNET WORLD magazine and a trade show by the same name in 1993. These properties were sold for $274 million in cash in 1998. He created the trade show Search Engine Strategies in 2000. This was sold in 2006 for $47 million. He purchased JupiterResearch out of bankruptcy and later sold it for a 5000 percent return. Presently he is Chairman and CEO of www.3dprint.com the leading news website for the additive manufacturing industry and also produces 7 www.inside3Dprinting.com trade shows worldwide. Meckler is also managing member of www.asimovVentures.com, which invests in startups in the 3D printing, Robotics and Blockchain fields. Meckler has Ph.D. in American history from Columbia University, has written several books and been published in The New Yorker. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and New York Air National Guard (1969-1975). I'm proud to call Alan a mentor and a friend, and I dedicate this episode to everyone who was ever told they'd never amount to anything, and continue to prove the haters wrong, every single day. Ep 57My Best Friend is "Do Not Disturb," with Emma Havighorst
OK... Brace yourself here for some seriously massive overachieving... Our guest this week (taking a deep breath,) is a marketing major at Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business. She received the Woolworth Award for her academic achievements as well as an award commending her working group for its business plan and presentation. When she's not studying, she works as an MTV Campus Ambassador for the Founders franchise, and is a Guest Writer for freshman-oriented online publication Fresh U. Oh, did I mention that Emma Havighorst is only EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD? Yeah. Took me a second to process that, too. Emma has actually never formally been diagnosed with ADHD, yet she set my "ADHD-dar" off the first time I read one of her tweets. You'll see why as you listen to this interview - She's got such a sharp grasp of time management, along with an uncanny ability to understand what's important now, vs. what's important not now. Parents, this is definitely an episode to share with your kids. As I interviewed her, I was reminded of another guest we had on several months ago, Rachel Cotton, a PhD out of Harvard. Both well aware of their gifts and what to do to make sure they're using them to the best of their ability to live the best lives possible. Enjoy the episode! Ep 53Adapt and Overcome, with Jack Walston
Another great podcast for you, and I'm thrilled to bring it to you! This week's guest is one of the people I count as not only a good friend, but a mentor who doesn't know he's a mentor. Please meet former US Navy SEAL Jack Walston. I first met Jack when I took part in his "bootcamp" program in Central Park. Two weeks, from 4:45am to 6:45am, of pure hell. Jumping jacks, pushups, running, carrying, repeat. It was brutal. So brutal, in fact, that I've since done his course 12 times. Jack is an amazing man, with great stories of his time in the "teams," but more importantly, he's a true inspiration to me. The value he's provided to me over the years will no doubt transfer over to you, as well. "Mental toughness. It doesn't come in a can." -Jack Walston Enjoy this episode! Once out of the military, Nick used the hyper-focus from his ADHD to launch SendLift, an online service that sends handwritten thank you notes all around the world. Ep 46Become a Generalist, with Preston Bealle
The Faster Than Normal Video Course is out! 36 videos to teach you how to take back control of your attention, your time, and your life! Check it out here! This week's guest is Preston Bealle. Preston was one of the last bosses I ever had before I went out on my own back in 1998. He taught me much - specifically, he taught me to be a generalist. It never occurred to me that doing so is exactly what allows many of us to master our ADHD.
