Graphic Designer Turned Cartoonist/Illustrator & ADHD Superhero Dani Donovan!
Today we visit with a Graphic Designer, Artist & ADHD Cartoon specialist, (and in my opinion, future superhero character designer). You have probably already seen Dani's Art without even realizing that it's her work, or that it was originally inspired by her ADHD. It was her Art & her fearlessness that brought us together today. I really want to share her full bio with you: Dani Donovan is a designer and illustrator who's recently risen to internet fame creating ADHD comics. Her first graphic (a storytelling flowchart) went viral, amassed over 100 million views, and has been reposted and praised by celebrities such as Mindy Kahling, Natalie Portman, and Jennifer Garner. Within a couple months, she quickly became a prominent voice in the online ADHD community. Dani's comics aim to help those with ADHD understand themselves and explain their struggles to loved ones. Her artwork struck a global chord and has been translated into four languages. She's partnering with Penguin Random House to illustrate a children's book based on her childhood experiences with ADHD. Dani works full-time as a designer for Gallup, runs a freelance branding business, and served on the board of directors for Nebraska's chapter of AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts). Her online store, ADHDDD.com, opens in early May. Enjoy! A Letter to the Little Boy Who Has Dyslexia & ADHD w/ Author, Coach & Speaker Jonathan "J.O." Oliver
Sometimes with ADHD, we can't figure out why things just aren't working out right. So when we finally get diagnosed, there can be a sense of relief- because we finally have a name for what's wrong. This guy knows all about that! After struggling through all of his high school & part of his college years, JO was diagnosed with Dyslexia and later with ADHD. He was struggling into his 30's. He has written a book about it, (in addition to a couple of others), that I started recently and am just loving. Now a husband and father, JO's mission is to help parents and families- particularly stay at home dads- redefine life & family according to what works best for them. We talk about how excruciatingly painful having undiagnosed ADHD & Dyslexia can be, (especially in classroom settings), about self-love, about what finding a true mentor can mean, and about his new book, which is J.O.'s love letter to his younger self, here today. Do Anything You Want To In This World w/ ADHD Mom, Record-breaking Athlete Caitlin Conner
The day before Caitlin's 24th birthday, a young girl in Texas was texting while driving and didn't see a young couple on their motorcycle. Caitlin & her husband at the time were ejected from that bike. She lived to celebrate her birthday in the ICU. When she woke up from surgery the nurse informed her that she was four weeks pregnant. After 6 reconstructive surgeries on minimal pain medication, antibiotics, and anesthesia due to the pregnancy, Caitlin knew that her child was worth more than her own body. On June 12th, 2014 she amputated her left leg below the knee and began to take on life as a new Mom. February 13, 2015 she delivered a beautiful baby girl named Tinley. Caitlin had always wanted to be a Mom, but now the question arose as to what kind of mother she would become. She set her first two goals: to walk & run before the baby could. In April of 2016 she ran her first 5k w/ Tinley in a stroller. A month later, she found a crossfit gym and began a strength training regimen. A passion that began from just wanting to be a Mom who could chase her kid around, rapidly grew and transformed a woman who has since become the first amputee boxer in America, a woman who has earned Gold and Silver medals in everything from Triathlons to Javelin, completed countless marathons, and on-and-on! She has recently started BeMoreAdaptive.org who's mission is to help the world be more adaptive, accessible, and profoundly knowledgeable about the adaptive community. We talk about choices, goal-setting, motivation and her incredible story here today. Enjoy! A Men's ADHD Support Group w/ Author & Life Coach Marc Almodovar
A lot of people I meet in the ADHD world are thrown into "all things ADHD" because they simply have no choice. There aren't just loads of places to go, especially outside of the medical community, where you can have open and frank discussions with others who are similarly gifted. Discovering ADD at 42, Then Learning How to Sit & Stay Happy- with Neil Cohen
It was never pointed out to Neil that he had all the tell-tale signs of ADD; not until he was 42 years old and recently separated from his then-wife. A good friend sent him an article on Adult ADHD/ADD. He soon after listened to my bookon a drive to Detroit. The lightbulb switched on and he found himself overwhelmed by his recent self-discoveries. He soon-there-after found a community of dog trainers, discovered the joy that comes from teaching & training dogs, (and their owners), and he committed to owning a training franchise. Has been working in and growing the "Dog space" ever since! His prior pursuits and careers have been: CEO, Marketing Consultant, Chimney Sweep, a few rides during the dot-com boom, Circus Trainer & Performer, scuba diver, competitive unicyclist, world traveler, maintaining his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and being a stay-at-home Dad! A Very Special Faster Than Normal: Episode 100, with guests Nancy and Ira Shankman!
Welcome to episode 100 of Faster Than Normal! I'm so very excited, humbled, and amazed - We're at 100 episodes! Who ever thought? 100 episodes of any podcast is hard enough, but a podcast about ADHD, hosted by someone with ADHD? That's an accomplishment! This week, to celebrate episode 100, we're interviewing two parents of an ADHD kid. But when this kid was growing up, ADHD didn't exist. "Sit down, you're disrupting the class" did. But through love, determination, and support, this kid made it through school and college (sometimes by the skin of his teeth) and wound up doing ok for himself. My two guests today are none other than my wonderful parents, Nancy and Ira Shankman. I'm so thankful to them not just for coming on the podcast, but for everything they've done for me over the past 45 years. This episode is dedicated to everyone who's been touched in some way by ADHD, and recognizes, even just a little bit, that those of us who have "faster brains" are NOT broken, and NOT disabled. In fact, once anyone with ADHD learns how to use that faster brains, the entire world is at their fingertips. Thanks to my mom and dad, I learned how. And to help others learn how to do the same is the whole reason I started Faster Than Normal in the first place. Enjoy - and as always - thank you for listening. To the next hundred and beyond, -Peter Shankman In this episode we talk about: 2:30- Welcome Nancy & Ira Shankman!! 4:00- Tell everyone a little about yourselves 5:20- So you two weren't necessarily entrepreneurs were you? 7:00- What was your first memory, or sign that I was different somehow? 9:00- Let's talk about my first experiences with school, notes from teachers, etc. 10:42- Looking back, how did me 'getting in trouble' feel to you two? 12:27- Do you think teachers still have the ability, considering all of the current pressures they face, to adapt for and acknowledge the kids with ADHD, or even those who just might need a little more help? 14:25- I figured out and invented so many of my own survival skills. Considering all I went through, and all that you witnessed, did you ever stop and think: "What do we do here for him"? 17:20- What do you think it was, that made it possible for me to always bounce back? (i.e. from frustration, mean kids, illness, failures, etc) 18:45- What would you tell other parents who's kids are coming home with similar complaints to what I received? 20:45- "Looking back I think we were more frantic and worried at times than you were". 23:00- At what point did you begin to really trust my decisions? 23:50- What would you say to parents who's children are asking for dopamine-fueling experiences? (often unwittingly) 26:10- On being supportive. 27:07- On not having a fear of doing something differently. 29:00- Any advice to parents for when their kids come home and say: "I'm broken"? 31:38- If ADHD had existed in medical journals when I was young, and the doctors had recommended you treat me with medication, would you have chosen to medicate me? Would you today? 33:12- Thank you Mom and Dad!!! This was awesome!! If you don't mind, how can people get in touch with you? I did not, until he reached out to me a few months back. I read his book in one weekend and loved it!
