From near tragedy to resounding triumph. Go inside the mind of three food addicts with very different stories, but whose life-and-death battles were also very much similar in many ways. However, as the trio open up about their struggles it becomes clear that while their food addictions manifested in polarizing ways the mental battle is very much a shared struggle. Plus, you will become inspired by their stories of recovery as Dotsie and Alexandra, who host the Switch4Good podcast, and Chuck share their paths to overcoming their disorders and the role that a plant-based diet plays in sustaining their healthy mindset. This uplifting conversation continues a discussion that originally began when Chuck was interviewed by them on their show. Also on this episode, Dr. Neal Barnard delves into the science of food and mental health. S3 Ep 51Dr. Kim Williams: COVID-19 Risk, Race and Plant-Based Nutrition
Dr. Kim Williams takes a new look at the racial disparities of the coronavirus as he joins The Exam Room™ podcast. If the playing field were equal, African Americans would essentially be at no higher risk of COVID-19, according to Williams. However, as it stands now, Blacks are dying at a rate nearly 2.5 times greater than Asians and Whites and at even higher levels in some areas. What then is causing the staggering differences? Dr. Williams, chief of cardiology at Rush University and former president of the American College of Cardiology, examines those factors, including systemic racism, as he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll. He also discusses research that finds once data models have been adjusted to account for obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol, race does not play a significant factor in the risk of COVID-19 related deaths or severity of cases. Additionally, Dr. Williams and Chuck talk about the role diet can play in mitigating those risks and how those with limited means can adopt a plant-based diet. Thus, their chances of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19 would decrease. Plus, Chuck is joined by Laura Sainz who shares her remarkable journey back to health. Laura was thriving professionally in the corporate world, but also living in constant pain after developing Crohn's disease, fibromyalgia, arthritis and other chronic conditions prior to the age of 25. Tired of living an unhealthy life, she began to explore her health but it wasn't until she adopted a fully vegan diet that her pain dissipated. She details the moment the unhealthy dark clouds she had been living under finally lifted and she was able to live vegan vibrantly. Today, she's helping others on their journey back to health! S3 Ep 50How Your Dinner Affects the Environment
What you eat can have a major consequence on the environment. How does the carbon footprint of foods from a plant-based diet compare to those found in the standard American diet? The differences can be massive! On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Dr. Martin Heller to explore the connection between greenhouse gas emissions and food. It's not just the health of the environment that is at stake, It's also your health! Dr. Heller explains how eating a diet that produces the most amount of greenhouse gases can substantially increase your risk of dying from heart disease and cancer! Plus, he and Chuck examine Burger King's new "Reduced Methane Emissions Beef" Whopper to see if the restaurant's claims that lemongrass-fed cows truly reduce "methane emissions" — a fancy term for flatulence and belches — by 33%. Also, Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Jim Loomis answer your health and nutrition questions! Does high cholesterol matter if the bad cholesterol levels are low? What should vegans know about vitamins A and D? Can cheese be a carrier for COVID-19? How can a plant-based diet help with multiple auto-immune disorders? How much iodine should we eat? Many more! S3 Ep 49How and Why To Take Race, Culture and Income Into Consideration When Talking About Health
The coronavirus pandemic is once again shining a light on the effects of systemic racism on health. On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, we delve into some of the unfair health disadvantages faced by Black and Indigenous people and people of color—along with the medical community's role in addressing these health disparities. "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by medical student Brooklynne Palmer, a rising figure in the health community and social media star, to discuss how and why to take race, culture, and income into consideration when talking with patients about their health. Brooklynne describes how understanding patients' cultures and keeping an open mind about patients' individual stories and circumstances will help doctors best serve all of their patients. Brooklynne also shares her own personal story: why she decided to become a doctor and why she plans to incorporate plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine into her future practice! Plus, Neal Barnard, MD, checks in to discuss new information on the ability of the coronavirus to spread so rapidly, how long it can linger in the air, and how contagious a person is once they become infected. — — — Brooklynne ("Beets By Brooke") IG: @beetsbybrooke — — — APM Research Lab https://bit.ly/3hqs0cn — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Dr. Neal Barnard Twitter: @DrNealBarnard IG: @DrNealBarnard Facebook: http://bit.ly/DrBarnardFB — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. S3 Ep 48Eat Plants, Live Longer and Healthier! Here's Why!
The life expectancy for vegans is up to 10 years longer than those who eat the standard American diet. Dr. Hana Kahleova joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to discuss her new paper on plant-based diets and healthy aging. Her research shows that eliminating meat and dairy from the diet is capable of more than just extending your life, it can add quality years to it. She says that the Fountain of Youth can be as close as your kitchen! Dr. Neal Barnard also joins the show to discuss the newest government funded artery clogging creation at Taco Bell, the Grilled Cheese Burrito. While it may sound strange that the government is responsible for what's on a fast food menu, he and Chuck delve into Dairy Management Inc. which is a federally funded agency that employs an army of food scientists whose sole mission is to create items specifically crafted to get you to eat more cheese. You may think that's way out in left field until you see the documents backing up the claims. Also on the show, Dr. Jia Xu checks in from Beijing to provide an update on the coronavirus pandemic in China where it all began. He says in some ways life is returning to normal. In other ways, however, they will never be the same. In the case of eating habits that's a good thing as Dr. Xu explains how thousands are now adopting a plant-based diet to improve their health! — — — Plant-Based Diets & Longevity Paper https://bit.ly/3jeK4bd — — — Dairy Management Inc. S3 Ep 47Do You Need Supplements for a Health Diet?
Do you need to take a multivitamin or supplement or can you get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from food? That is a question that millions are wondering and also something that vitamin companies are counting on. The global supplement industry is worth more than $120 billion as people turn to the vitamin aisle rather than the produce aisle. On this episode of The Exam Room™, Dr. Neal Barnard joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to settle the great vitamin debate. You will learn how to eat a healthy diet to ensure your body gets nearly everything it needs from the food on your plate and the vitamins you should still be stocking up on even when eating a plant-based diet. Dr. Barnard also discusses whether the coronavirus can be found on the meat and fish being sold in your local grocery store! Multiple studies have shown people are going home with a lot more than they bargained for. Plus, Olympian Dotsie Bausch returns to the show! She and Chuck discuss the growing number of elite athletes who are ditching dairy and making the Switch 4 Good! As certain as she is that she has a medal to her name, Dotsie is equally certain that talk of dairy being essential for strong bones is a bunch of hot air. S3 Ep 46They Lost 1,000 Pounds By Going Vegan!
The LaJaunie family lost an incredible 1,000 pounds after going vegan! Inspired by Josh LaJaunie, who was the first to switch to a plant-based diet and lost more than 200 pounds, other members of the family made the change and radically improved their health as they watched the weight melt away! Mom Ramona and brothers Josh and Dustin join "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll, who also lost 280 pounds, to chronicle their amazing transformation and talk about their plant-based cookbook Pure Ambrosia! One family member even was able to park their scooter for good and start walking again after changing their eating habits! Plus, cardiologist Dr. Baxter Montgomery joins the show to talk about how the body begins to heal before you can even notice that you've lost any weight. He also answers your questions about heart health and nutrition. - How can cholesterol levels rise on a plant-based diet and what can be done about it? - What are safe amounts of salt, oil, and sugar? - What is the best way to juice cleanse and water fast? - What are the health benefits of algae? - Why do some suggest eating raw food in the morning and cooked food later in the day? - Plus, many others! — — — The LaJaunie Family Pure Ambrosia Cookbook: https://amzn.to/3eroH3w Sick To Fit: https://amzn.to/383z2Ap Twitter: @joshlajaunie IG: @joshlajaunie — — — Dr. Baxter Montgomery Nutrition Bootcamp: https://wghtloss.cc/DrMClasses Montgomery Heart and Wellness: https://wghtloss.cc/MontHeart — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed — — — Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. S3 Ep 45Debating Dairy: Does Your Body Need Milk?
Do milk and dairy belong in the same category as tobacco and processed meat? On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, health benefits of dairy are debated as renowned epidemiologist Dr. Gary Fraser joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll. Does cheese or a glass of milk increase the risk for cancer and chronic disease or are they the cornerstones of a healthy diet? Some of the research being discussed may be counter to what many who subscribe to a plant-based diet believe. Dr. Fraser served as the director of the Adventist health studies at Loma Linda for 32 years and was heavily involved in the Adventist Health Study-1 as well as the development of the Adventist Health Study-2. Chuck also explores other research that shows dairy can be more nefarious when it comes to your health as he revisits a conversation with oncology nutritionist Alison Tierney. She strongly recommends eliminating dairy as eating a whole food plant-based diet has been shown to be one of the best preventative measures for cancer and other chronic diseases. Alison, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, discusses the link between dairy fat and estrogen as well as the production of other potentially cancer-causing hormones such as 5alpha-P and IGF-1. S3 Ep 44Twins: One Goes Vegan, One Doesn't. This Is What Happens!
What happens when identical twins eat two completely different diets? Hugo and Ross Turner wanted to know. For 12 weeks one of them went vegan while the other continued eating meat and dairy. What happened during that time was amazing! They join "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to talk about how their experiences differed. One lost more weight, one gained more energy, one lowered their cholesterol, and that's just the start! The Turner Twins' story has captured the world and now they're sharing it on The Exam Room™. Also on the show, Dr. Jasmol Sardana, aka Dr. Jazz, returns to answer your questions as Chuck opens the Doctor's Mailbag. Among the questions answered: - What plant-based foods should diabetics avoid? - How can an elderly person improve their immune system? - How low is too low for A1C levels on a vegan diet? - How much fiber is lost when blending whole fruits and vegetables in a smoothie? --- --- --- SPOILER: If you don't want to know how the Turner Twins' vegan diet experiment turned out, stop reading until you've listened to the show. ** Ross (Omnivorous Diet) ** CHOLESTEROL Before: 6.5 After: 6.5 WEIGHT Before: 187 lbs After: 191 lbs MUSCLE MASS Before: 158 lbs After: 166 lbs ** Hugo (Vegan Diet) ** CHOLESTEROL Before: 5.9 After: 4.9 WEIGHT Before: 185 lbs After: 182 lbs MUSCLE MASS Before: 153 lbs After: 152 lbs It is interesting to note that although Ross gained greater muscle mass with a traditional diet, Hugo reported no symptoms of weakness and had a feeling of similar strength while eating a vegan diet. — — — The Turner Twins Web: https://www.theturnertwins.co.uk/ IG: @theturnertwiins Twitter: @theturnertwins — — — Chuck Carroll Twitter: @ChuckCarrollWLC IG: @ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook — — — Dr. Jasmol Sardana IG: @drjasmol — — — Physicians Committee Twitter: @PCRM IG: @PhysiciansCommittee Facebook: https://wghtloss.cc/PCRMFacebook YouTube: https://bit.ly/PCRMYouTube — — — Barnard Medical Center Telemedicine Schedule Appointment: https://bit.ly/BMCtelemed Share the Show Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or many other podcast providers. S3 Ep 43Is Your Diet Helping or Hurting Your Kidneys?
An estimated 1 out of 7 adults in the U.S. have chronic kidney disease. And 9 out of 10 have no idea that they do. On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. Shivam Joshi joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to talk about combating kidney disease with diet! While many with CKD are advised not to eat fruits and vegetables, Dr. Joshi explains why he prescribes a vegan diet for many of his patients and how an abundance of plant-based foods can improve their health! Chuck and Dr. Joshi also weigh in on the effect the keto diet can have on the kidneys as well as claims by actor Liam Hemsworth that eating a plant-based diet caused him to develop a kidney stone. Dr. Joshi will be a featured speaker at the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. Plus, future doctor and current social media star Brooklyne (aka @BeetsByBrooke) joins the show to discuss learning culinary medicine in medical school! Indeed, this soon-to-be doctor is learning about preventative medicine before her career even begins! Now more than ever we should be eating as if the world depended on it, because it does. On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, Dr. David Katz, a preventative medicine specialist and author of How To Eat, joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to weigh the magnitude of our food choices on everything from the environment to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Katz also shares his opinion on how differently the global pandemic would be playing out if doctors focused more on food and lifestyle rather than just treating the symptoms of chronic conditions. He and Chuck then discuss his time working in an overflowing New York City hospital during the height of the pandemic. Dr. Katz will be a featured speaker at the upcoming International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. Plus, Dr. Neal Barnard talks about how your blood type can impact your risk of COVID-19. S3 Ep 41How Going Vegan For 15 Days Can Change Your Health!
What can going vegan for 15 days do for your health? Amazing things! Dr. Ted Barnett, also known as "Dr. Veggie," joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room™ podcast to talk about the dramatic improvements he's seen in patients after little more than two weeks. Following a lifetime of high cholesterol, Dr. Barnett says his patients experience a 50-point drop on average. Others who have struggled with their weight will see the scale finally head in the right direction and keep on going! Others with diabetes can also see dramatic improvements with their blood sugar, and that's just the start. S3 Ep 39Less Meat, More Plants!
A report that may reshape nutrition advice given to millions of Americans will soon be discussed in Washington. It is the groundwork for the updated USDA Dietary Guidelines that are set to be released early next year. And one thing is clear — research shows the guidelines should call for less meat and more plants! On this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by dietitian Susan Levin to explore the recommendations that everyone eating a plant-based diet should be hoping for! They also look at the confusion surrounding some of the current guidelines and how they can be improved. The update currently being crafted by the USDA comes on the heels of the American Cancer Society's new nutrition guidance which does not include red or processed meat, both of which have been tied to many forms of cancer. Likewise, Canada has deemphasized dairy in its latest nutrition guidelines because of cancer concerns. Will the US be the next country to take a healthy step toward a plant-based way of eating? Also on the show, Dr. Neal Barnard and Dr. Jim Loomis open up the Doctor's Mailbag to answer your questions! Are canned beans as healthy as dried beans? Which is unhealthier: white meat or dark meat? S3 Ep 38Dr. Michael Greger & Dr. Neal Barnard Team Up to Answer Your Questions
Two of the biggest names in nutrition join forces to answer your questions! Doctors Neal Barnard and Michael Greger join "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll to answer questions ranging from vitamin D and the immune system to the nutritional values of white and brown rice. They also offer their thoughts on whether vegans should get tested regularly for nutrient levels. Dr. Greger also talks about his new book "How To Survive A Pandemic" and ponders what would happen if all meat markets worldwide were to close. He also reveals what many health experts worry will become the next major pandemic, one far deadlier than COVID-19. Plus, the powerful story of Kathleen Gage is told as she joins Chuck for a moving interview. Kathleen overcame substance abuse, obesity, an abusive relationship, and denial of her true identity to become a success in the business world. S3 Ep 37Family History, Not Your Destiny: Taking Control of Your Health
Many of us are fearful that if a disease runs in the family we will get it and there is nothing that we can do. It's as if our fate is already sealed. However, on this episode of The Exam Room™ podcast, "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll is joined by Jill Erickson and her husband Joel whose stories are proof that doesn't have to be the case. Colon cancer runs deeply in Jill's family — her mom, aunt, and cousin all had it. When it hit particularly close to home she turned to her husband, Joel, and said that she knew that she would die from it as well and that it was only a matter of time. Then something happened one Sunday afternoon. Armed with a big bowl of snacks and the tv remote, she sat down on the couch expecting to burn brain cells and get a few hours closer to an inescapable diagnosis. Instead, she stumbled across a certain documentary on Netflix and began learning about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Suddenly, she realized that her family history of cancer did not have to be her destiny. The importance of nutrition became even more paramount when Joel suffered a "widow maker" heart attack.
