S1 Ep 74How Recruiting Became A Family Business With Ernie Moreno
Signup for future emails from The Elite Recruiter Podcast: https://eliterecruiterpodcast.beehiiv.com/subscribe Ernie Moreno is a successful business owner who believes in the power of mentoring and helping others achieve their goals. Throughout his life, he has encountered several people who believed in him and helped him in his journey towards success. Some notable examples are his high school teachers and coaches who saw potential in him and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. However, Moreno's path towards success did not come easily. He started working in the fields of California at the age of four or five due to a lack of babysitting options. He worked picking oranges and peaches, and when he turned twelve, he started picking by the hour because he looked older than he was. Despite working long hours in the fields, Moreno's hunger for success and a better life pushed him to strive for more. After college, he took nonprofit jobs and eventually became a United Farm Workers (UFW) organizer working for only $5 a week and room and board. He saw firsthand the struggles of farmworkers and the injustices they faced. Moreno continued to pursue his education and went to law school with his wife. They then returned to working with the UFW. Moreno's career took a significant turn when he received a call offering him an HR manager position. He accepted the job, eventually becoming a VP. Unfortunately, he found himself in a position working for a boss he didn't like and being fired from a job he didn't like either. But these setbacks didn't deter Moreno. He learned that to take control of his life, he had to be proactive and decided to start his own business. Starting your own business can be daunting, but Moreno believes that having someone who believes in you is critical. His wife has been his biggest supporter throughout his journey, and it was his children who referred to Moreno's business as "the family business." Since 1998, Moreno has been working from home and prefers communicating with clients over the phone rather than in person. Recruitment has been the focus of Moreno's business, and he has provided valuable insights to those who reached out to him for mentorship. He emphasizes that recruiting is a selling business and encourages people to learn how to sell if they want to succeed in this industry. Moreno suggests that recruiting involves many little things to learn, including screening candidates and making successful placements. He recommends using podcasts, books, and YouTube videos to learn different approaches to recruitment and sales. Moreno's business has grown, and he now has a team of independent recruiters. Anyone who wants to work with Moreno needs to show that they are hungry to learn. For Moreno, mentorship is about teaching and guiding people who are willing to put in the effort to succeed. He differentiates between a mentor and a trainer/teacher, saying that someone can teach you but not necessarily mentor you if there's no connection or willingness to put in the effort from both sides. In conclusion, Ernie Moreno's life experiences have shaped his perspective and how he approaches opportunities. Despite the obstacles he faced, he remained hungry for success and followed his dreams. Moreno's belief in the importance of mentorship reflects his desire to help others and guide them on the path towards success. S1 Ep 72The Blueprint To Grow Your Career Within A Recruitment Agency with Tori Liberte
In this episode of the Elite Recruiter Podcast, host Benjamin Mena interviews Tori Liberte, a successful recruiter, and firm leader. Tori shares her journey into the recruiting industry, the importance of quality over quantity in recruitment, and how to advance your career within a recruitment agency. Tori's journey into recruiting Tori graduated with a bachelor's degree in speech therapy, but after discovering that healthcare was not her passion, she decided to transition into sales. Her mother suggested she try college recruitment, which led her to the recruiting industry. Although Tori was not hired for her first interview at Delta due to lack of experience, she eventually landed a job at Randstad, where she worked for over two and a half years in recruiting. Tori's determination and hard work helped her rise through the ranks, and eventually, a leadership position with Delta Construction Partners. Quality over quantity in recruitment Tori values quality over quantity and focuses on results-driven business. She believes that sending a high number of candidates or making a high number of phone calls does not necessarily lead to success in recruitment. In fact, pushing for high numbers can ruin the relationship with clients, resulting in sending them subpar candidates. Tori stresses the importance of knowing your success rate and specific numbers to get the ratio right, which is the most important factor for recruiters. Additionally, Tori shares three essential qualities for success in recruiting: a sense of urgency, resilience, and grit. Growing a business successfully Tori's personal experience during COVID-19 helped her company grow substantially at a time when other companies were not growing. She suggested her company break even by diversifying their sales structure and putting account managers in place. Tori's decision was not based on a big discussion with the whole team; it was something that needed to be done. The power of compounding Tori highly recommends a book that she has read multiple times and often gifts to people. The book emphasizes the concept of compounding, where small actions in various aspects of life, such as saving, working out, eating healthy, meditation, and sleeping, can lead to significant growth and improvement in the long term. In recruiting, Tori stresses the importance of understanding that the efforts made today may not result in immediate success, but they will compound and bear fruit in the future. Conclusion Tori's journey into recruiting, her focus on quality over quantity, and her insights on growing a business successfully provide valuable lessons for recruiters and entrepreneurs alike. Her emphasis on the human connection highlights the importance of personal communication in recruitment. Her story is a testament to the idea that hard work, determination, and the ability to trust your instincts can lead to success in any industry. S1 Ep 64The Blueprint to a 7-Figure Recruitment Agency with James Blackwell
James Blackwell, Director of the Agency Blueprint and managing director of Ronald James Group, was interviewed by Benjamin on the Elite Recruiter podcast. Blackwell discussed his journey in the recruitment industry, starting as a car salesman before falling into recruitment and eventually starting his own agency in 2015. He spoke about the common issue of recruiters setting up their own agency and becoming highly paid employees for their own business instead of growing and scaling. To hit the seven-figure mark in a recruitment business, Blackwell advised building a client attraction system through a Dream 100 campaign for repeat business and winning clients exclusively retained by creating a unique methodology and signature sales pitch deck. However, to scale beyond $100-250k, it is important to learn how to be a business owner and not just a recruiter. Blackwell emphasized that a highly employed solopreneur is not a business owner. During the conversation, Blackwell discussed strategies for small and solo recruitment agencies to thrive in a recession by being leaner and more agile than larger agencies. In addition to sending automated email or LinkedIn campaigns, agencies should consider going the extra mile to differentiate themselves, such as building a marketing agency to help boost a client's brand and attract better talent or offering a free workshop to potential clients. Regarding starting one's own recruitment agency, Blackwell advised on the importance of having a mentor and a plan to map out the niche market and win clients, and not to worry about the website initially. He also suggested not taking investors and focusing on building a proper business by getting some money coming in and then building client acquisition system and operations. Blackwell emphasized the importance of investing in oneself and not taking 50-50 partnerships or giving away billings every month to companies that invest in recruitment agency startups. Blackwell recommended the book "How to Get Rich" by Felix Dennis for its practical advice on building a successful business with systems and "Built to Sell" by John Wobbleau Talk for its principles on building a business that is not reliant on the owner. He also shared his favorite quote, "If you think you can, then you can, and if you think you can't, you can't." Throughout the conversation, Blackwell emphasized the importance of building relationships and honing persuasion skills as a recruiter. He recommended the book "Search and Placement" by Steve Finkel as a valuable resource for new recruiters. For experienced recruiters, he suggested considering going out on their own to build their own business empire or partnering with their current agency to add value and progress within the company. He also advised against seeking investors for a recruitment agency startup, as this often results in giving away a large portion of billings without receiving adequate support or systems to build the business. S1 Ep 63How To Robot Proof Your Recruitment Career with Katrina Collier
In a recent Elite Recruiter podcast episode, host Benjamin Mena interviewed Katrina Collier, author of The Robot-Proof Recruiter, about the changing recruitment market and the importance of staying relevant in the age of AI. Katrina Collier shared her background in recruitment, starting as a trainee recruitment consultant after moving to London from Australia. She also discussed the lack of education around the recruitment profession and the importance of improving candidate experience and recruitment practices. The conversation centered around Collier's book, The Robot-Proof Recruiter, which argues that recruiters cannot be replaced by technology. The book aims to help recruiters understand the challenges of recruitment in a digital age and how to stand out in a crowded market. Collier emphasized the importance of treating candidates with compassion and kindness, pushing back on hiring managers when necessary, and doing proper intakes to ensure a better human experience. The book has received contributions from 85 people worldwide, making it a comprehensive manual that recruiters need to read. Collier donated her royalties from the book to a charity that aims to end modern-day slavery. The conversation also touched on the impact of the pandemic on recruitment and the need for more education about the profession. The speakers discussed the impact of overhiring in the recruitment industry and how it affects people's lives. They talked about how companies knee-jerk react to economic changes by firing TA teams, the lack of awareness among recruiters about the slowing of hiring, and the responsibility of the C Suite in signing off on requisitions. They also discussed the impact of irresponsible hiring on people's lives, emphasizing the need for recruiters to remember the compassion and empathy that they lost during the pandemic. The conversation then turned to the impact of AI on recruiters. Collier expressed skepticism, stating that AI will only create more noise and spam unless the person using the tool is creative and curious enough to personalize messages. They also gave an example of a highly personalized message from 2015 that went viral on Twitter but did not elicit a response from the recipient. The speakers also touched upon the issue of overhiring by companies and the need for the C-Suite to be held accountable for the impact on people's lives. However, they remained optimistic that the job market will eventually level out. The speakers provided advice for recruiters, emphasizing the importance of being more creative and trying different methods to get in touch with hiring managers. They emphasized the need for a proper job intake process, as it is the most overlooked part of the hiring process. Recruiters were encouraged to spend time upfront with hiring managers to understand their needs and not to accept outdated job descriptions. The conversation also highlighted the need to look forward and understand what the company really needs, and the importance of getting hiring managers to invest time upfront to save time and money in the long run. The conversation ended with the advice to drop attitudes and partner with hiring managers to fill roles. S1 Ep 547 Figure Biller Secrets with Amanda Berning
Benjamin Mena welcomed Amanda Berning onto the Elite Recruiter podcast to discuss how to bill seven figures as a recruiter. Amanda revealed that she never set out to become a recruiter, but ended up in the industry after a friend of a friend told her about an admin role that didn't require working on weekends and holidays. After taking a disc profile test, it was suggested that she had potential to be a recruiter and the president of the company asked if she was interested in the job - to which she replied no, as she didn't want to call people on the phone. The conversation began with the speaker describing their experience transitioning from an agency recruiter to an internal recruiter. It was an eye-opening experience as she supported executive search and a global role as a head of legal in Singapore, but were surprised to learn that they had to go through a process of bar and compensation reviews before the offer could be made. Through this experience, the she learned to appreciate the importance of the process when dealing with corporate clients and was excited to return to agency recruiting. They noted the difference between the speed of recruitment when working with an agency compared to when working internally. S1 Ep 53Making 2023 Your Best Year Yet with Brett Eaton
Brett Eaton is a high-performance coach who helps entrepreneurs and business owners become the best versions of themselves. On this episode of the Elite Recruiter Podcast, Brett shares his journey to becoming a life coach and how he helps high performers reach their goals. He began his career in the fitness industry and eventually branched out to coaching people in the other 23 hours of their life. Brett works with clients to ensure they are able to grow and create a life that is fulfilling and successful. He believes that in order to have a successful 2023, individuals must have a plan to become the best versions of themselves. Brett begins by discussing how to set oneself up for a successful year in 2023. He suggests having an acronym, which stands for Have a Goal or Target, in order to focus on a specific goal or target. This way, one can work on specific habits throughout the year that will significantly improve their life. He further suggests that people should have a clear understanding as to why they are trying to achieve the goal or target. This can be applied to all aspects of life including career, business, and family. Having an understanding of why one is trying to achieve their goal is essential in order to stay motivated and focused, and will ultimately lead to a successful year. The conversation is about how to use the acronym HOPE to set and achieve goals and live a more organized, productive and successful life. HOPE stands for having a goal or target, organizing one's life, prioritizing one's time, and executing properly. It is necessary to ask oneself what one wants out of life and who one wants to become at the end of the year, and to make sure that one's goals are helping them become that person. It is important to prioritize the four or five most important things in life and to make sure one's schedule reflects those priorities. Lastly, execution is key, and it becomes easier when one has a plan and is executing in the right places. The speaker suggests that having fewer goals is more beneficial than having many goals. It's like juggling; if you try to juggle many balls all at once, you may end up dropping the first few balls. They suggest setting one or two goals each month, which will result in having 12 to 24 goals over the course of the year. It's also important to consider why you want to achieve the goal and to be prepared for the work and effort it will require. Ultimately, having fewer goals and being mindful of why you want to achieve them will help you stay focused and motivated. S1 Ep 52#52 - DEI Strategy Secrets with James Dyson
Benjamin Mena, host of the Elite Recruiter Podcast, is joined by James Dyson, the Head of Global DEI for Talent Acquisition at Boomi. James talks about how he got into recruiting, as he was previously a fitness trainer living in DC. He transitioned into marketing and then found his way into agency recruiting. He then he had a few others moves before landing at Boomi where he is now the head of their DEI for Talent Acquisition. Boomi's mission is to connect the world through their multiple API connectors and the systems that they are able to use to connect different platforms and organizations within a company. James sees Boomi's name on resumes in the cleared space, showing the reach of their technology. The conversation discussed the current environment for diversity and inclusion in the recruiting world. The key point was that companies need to be more strategic than tactical in order to hire diverse talent. Companies should be a place that diverse talent wants to come and should back up the things they are proclaiming their company does. This could include offering mentorship programs and creating a workplace that is open, transparent and supportive of different backgrounds and opinions. Additionally, companies should reach out to diverse organizations and networks to get the word out and build relationships with potential hires. The conversation is about how to best recruit diverse talent for organizations. The speaker stresses that the first step to successful diversity recruiting is to make the organization itself more diverse. To do this, organizations should get involved in the community where potential candidates reside, and ensure that there are members of the company and corporate teams that reflect various backgrounds and identities. The speaker then suggests looking into various diversity-focused organizations that can be tapped into to find potential candidates, depending on the makeup of the organization. For example, if the organization is lacking in female representation, they should look into organizations such as Latinas in Tech, Black Girls Who Code, NESB, SWEET, and the National Association of Women's Sales Professionals. Recruiting members of underrepresented communities can be a challenge, but there are a few ways to do it. First and foremost, it is important to be honest and genuine in all interactions. Consider attending events, conferences, and hackathons that are specifically targeted towards these groups. Showcasing products and services is also a great way to get people interested. Additionally, going to the areas where these communities are located and being present is a great way to let them know you are interested. Finally, if you are looking for a job, don’t expect people to fly out to you, rather fly out to them and make those connections.
