A New Kind of Hero’s Journey, Dream-Inspired Creativity with Author Donna Glee Williams
We all know that dreams can galvanize your creativity. Today we meet an author who has published three dream-inspired fantasy novels which seek to reimagine the hero’s journey. Author Donna Glee Williams, PhD is our guest and her latest book is called The Night Field. Plus music by Lynn Morgan Rosser. Donna Glee describes her 17 year mentorship with Jeremy Taylor which began as an exploration of an ongoing dream theme of difficulty getting to water. She also speaks of dreams that are gifts for others and shares that she recently wrote a story based on another’s dream. When published it will have the dreamer as co-author. She describes using dreams to inspire creativity by starting with the question, “If you were to do something to honor this dream, what would it be?” She then speaks about how her books embody a new kind of Hero’s Journey more appropriate for a post-patriarchal world than the traditional Joseph Campbell formulation, a new paradigm that gets away from individualism and invites co-heroes. After the break we take a call from John of Santa Cruz who describes research showing that people who play music access different portions of their brain than those who don’t. Our engineer and music-creator Rick adds that music is a high-bandwidth form of transmitting nonverbal information. We then take a call from Lynn Rosser of Asheville of North Carolina who has created music to go with Donna Glee’s new novel. We play part of the piece called Bridges. You can find Lynn at LynnMorganRosser.com and on Spotify and other platforms. Donna Glee suggests that listeners go to ko-fi.com/lynnmorganrosser to support her. We then talking about using fantasy to address real-world issues including addressing problems with pesticides which are portrayed, but never explicitly mentioned, in The Night Field which emerged from her work with the Eco Tipping Points Project which can be found at EcoTippingPoints.org. Donna Glee ends by reading the opening paragraphs from her new novel. BIO: When I first met Jeremy Taylor, I was already a writer but—other than my doctoral dissertation—I’d never written in any long form. During my 17 years of dreamwork with him, I wrote three novels seeded by dreams. His fingerprints are particularly bright on my latest, The Night Field. A Seth-Inspired Alternative Sleep Schedule with David Cielak
Trouble sleeping through the night? Maybe you are on your way to a superior sleep schedule which could enhance your creativity, flexibility, and dream recall. We talk with David Cielak about what Seth has to say about sleep and dreaming. Dave recommends five hours of sleep at night preceded by the important suggestion that upon awakening I will be refreshed and ready for the day. You are also encouraged to nap as needed. This sleep schedule enhances dream recall and can lead to more lucid dreaming and was inspired by the writings of Jane Roberts who channeled the entity Seth. He recommends using the following incubation “As I sleep I will attract from inner reality the very best possible events in all areas of my life.” The Seth materials suggest that our waking reality is determined by our choices in our dream state. Dreams help us change the beliefs that dictate our waking life behavior. We get more personal after the break and Dave talks about how the book Seth Speaks literally fell off the shelf into his lap and changed his life. I share a dream about my recently deceased father which reveals my changing beliefs, and Max asks Dave to tell us about his understanding of the Australian aboriginal concept of the Dreamtime. BIO: David has been playing with dreams since childhood, over 55 years! David migrated to Australia in 1990 and used dreams to help that decision and process along. A long term student of the Seth Materials since his early 20. “We create reality from the inside out using the dream state”. David has been practicing the Superior Alternative Sleep Schedule for the past few years. What Dreams Have to Say about Reality with Tina Tau
Is waking life really a kind of theater which we make up along the way? The transformative potential of dreamwork, today with author and certified dreamworker, Tina Tau. Tina shares a dream in which she struggles to swim upstream, then suddenly stands up and realizes the water is not so deep. We speak about how this highlights that our understanding of what’s true in any moment, waking or sleeping, may be radically altered by our expectations. She shares another dream in which she notices that a giant bird seems to be operated by wires like a puppet and asks, “Who is big enough to operate that puppet?” Tina describes how this dream opened up for her the realization that much of reality is staged like a play. After the break, Gary from Oregon calls with a dream including three planetariums. We finish with a few words about asking for dreams to help with the climate change crisis and a description of her recent book “Ask for Horses”. Anima Dreams, Personal Neurobiology, and Hispanic Identity with John Valenzuela, PhD
An anima dream series and personal neurobiology. Also Dreams about love and, just in time for Hispanic heritage month, Mexican American male identity formation. A conversation with John Valenzuela, PhD. John describes that the anima and animus figures we meet in our dreams are autonomous spiritual beings AND also parts of us and that the gender distinction is probably a cultural artifact. We talk about the distinction between when a dream figure is a someone we know from waking life vs a stranger. John describes a few dream from his own anima series and talks about the way dreams reveal our “personality landscape.” He talks about the nine domains of integration from the work of Dan Siegal and says that dreams are helping with this integration. Those oh-so-common dreams of trying to find something are probably our own brains in the process of integration. We take a call from Rochelle from San Diego who shares a dream series about her teeth falling out while on a date. We end by talking about John’s research into dreams and identity formation in Mexican American males. BIO: John Valenzuela, earned his Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Clinical Psychology program. His dissertation Psyche’s Response to the Intersections of Cultural Complexes: Mexican American Male Identity Formation explores dreams and their symbolic connections to Aztec culture. Artificial Intelligence, Yoga Nidra, and More with Joanna Kowalewska
Would you let a bot interpret your dreams? Should you? We speak with Joanna of Blue Lotus Queendom about the pleasures and pitfalls of using AI with dreams. Also what is Yoga Nidra and how does it support Dreamwork. Joanna gives many suggestions about how to use AI with our dreams but that list does NOT include asking the AI what your dream means. She urges us to trust our inner knowing instead. This leads to a conversation about the ethics of telling someone else what their dream means. We switch to a discussion of yoga nidra. Joanna suggests that it can help us as dreamers in many ways including making us aware of different states of consciousness as well as possibly increasing dream recall We take a call from Kristen from Virginia who shares a dream about black demons attacking Robin Williams few days before he killed himself. We then take a call from Wendy from Monterey who shares a dream suggesting that we can to learn to cooperate to influence the outcome of the future. Helplessness, Trauma, and Nightmares with Dr. Greg Mahr
Can we predict who will develop PTSD? Our guest, Dr. Greg Mahr, studies patients with acute trauma, and he discovered that their dreams in the days and weeks after their injury suggest who will recover fully and who will be mired in PTSD months later. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that occurs after trauma marked by intense nightmares and increased risk of suicide, but only about 30% of those traumatized go on to develop PTSD. In Dr. Mahr’s acute trauma center in Detroit, he interviews victims of car accidents and assaults and asks about their dreams in the days immediately after the trauma and finds that experiences of helplessness in their dreams and during their trauma correlate with the development of PTSD. After the traumatic event, nightmares tend to replicate the event exactly, but changes soon develop in those who recover in which the person finds some agency and the dreams eventually start to have happier endings. This mimics the process of IRT, Image Rehearsal Therapy, in which people can deliberately change their nightmares by imagining new versions of the troubling dreams. Dr. Mahr speculates that one of the purposes of dreaming is to encourage us to talk about our traumas and that they help us develop a narrative about the event. We take a question from Amy about how to bring up the topic of nightmares with a doctor and end by talking about post-traumatic growth and the idea that dreams are messages from ourselves. BIO: Greg Mahr MD is a psychiatrist, a teacher and a writer. He is director of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and is on faculty at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dream work and Jungian depth psychology have been long standing passions for Greg, and at over 5000 dreams, he has one of the most extensive collection of personal dreams in the world. Guiding Spirits Home with Jeanne Van Bronkhorst
Companioning the dying through lucid dreams. Our guest shares some of her experiences of psychopompic dreaming. Starting when she was 9 or 10 she would dream of being in a classroom where she learned how to change the dream. Several years later she describes her first experience of helping a dying person happened several years later when she found herself in a dream falling together with a woman who was terrified. She was able to slow their fall by dreaming up first n umbrella then a parachute letting the woman land softly in a place where friends were waiting to greet her. She shares several such stories (including one in which she was awake but meditating) and says that in the liminal space between life and death, our dreaming muscles are essential when the physical world falls away. Jeanne describes some of the work of Allan Kellehear in his book Experiences Near Death: Beyond Medicine and Religion, saying that near death experiences vary across cultures, but the one thing in common is that the dying person is always being helped as they approach that threshold. Rick shares a dream in which one of his beloved dogs is killed, and Max asks whether Jeanne feels prepared when she has these experiences of if she is just winging it. We muse over Tibetan Dream Yoga and the idea that we are more open to these liminal spaces when we are dreaming and marveling over the rich variety of metaphors for dying that people experience, and end by talking about how to enhance emotional connections with those who are dying. Jeanne also appeared on the Dream Journal in August 2021. That conversation can be found here: https://ksqd.org/dreams-at-the-end-of-life-with-jeanne-van-bronkhorst/ BIO: Jeanne Van Bronkhorst, MA, MSW, worked with people in hospice care for ten years. The Healing Power of Storytelling with Gerette Buglion
Have you ever felt better about yourself after telling someone your story? Today we speak with author and cult survivor Gerette Buglion who guides others to tell their “I got out” stories in a process she calls Writing to Reckon. We start with a question from podcast listener Beth sent via Instagram, “What was your biggest motivation for telling your story and what were your hopes for it in the world?” We go deep into answers to those questions and also address the shame that people sometimes feel about discovering that they have been in a coercive situation. We talk about how writing your story can help you find a way back to yourself and why you might or might not want to share it and with whom. Support for writing your story can be found at igotout.org/empowerment including Gerette’s free Writing to Reckon classes, or register here GeretteBuglion.com/writingtoreckon. Doing the Opposite with Chris Cunniffe
When should you do the opposite of what you usually do? Today we speak about lucid dreaming, shadow work, and dream yoga with Chris Cunniffe. Chris had been a lawyer for 8 years when he had a dream which nudged him onto a more spiritual path. In the dream, Chris was at a Milli Vanilli conference which led him to wonder about what part of his life was a false front. Chris urges us to consider “doing the opposite”. For example: dreaming is meaningless; consider that it might be meaningful. Nightmares are bad and should be avoided; perhaps they are helpful. I should run away from that monster in my dream; maybe I should turn towards it. Chris gives examples of using this idea with shadow dream figures. We then speak about treating waking life as a lucid dream including connecting with those cartoon-like figures we encounter over and over. I got some personal ahas from this discussion about my own trouble delegating tasks. We end by talking about the idea that some of the people we meet in our dreams are counterparts or soulmates. BIO: Chris is a graduate of Holy Cross College (1993) and Harvard Law School (1996). He has a career background as an entrepreneur in both law and real estate. In 2015, Chris founded Lucid Coaching, LLC, as a creative vehicle for offering coaching services to clients and for publishing articles and videos about dreams, personal development, and spirituality. Chris currently serves as a board member and volunteer facilitator at Bliss Spiritual Co-op, a Charleston based retreat center, where he facilitates discussion groups about dreams and other topics. The Natural Dream, a Rodger Kamenetz Replay
Instead of puzzling over the meaning of your dreams, bring them to life with Natural Dreamwork. This show originally aired last Fall. Katherine speaks with poet and author Rodger Kamenetz. He suggests a practice of exploring dreams which starts with counting your blessings. He also spoke about dreams as symbolic in the same way that poems are and about dreaming as a sacred encounter. We take calls from Kat from Delaware who dreams about a baby with a too long neck and from Maureen who dreams about waiting for her boyfriend by two bridges. BIO: Rodger Kamenetz is the author of 15 books of poetry and prose. His book The Jew in the Lotus is an international best-seller. He is Professor Emeritus at LSU where he founded the MFA program in creative writing and the Jewish Studies minor. He is the founder of Natural Dreamwork, an international group of twenty dreamwork practitioners who approach the dream as a natural resource for healing and spiritual growth. The History of Last Night’s Dream was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series. The Natural Dreamwork approach is to avoid interpretation and focus instead on bringing to life rich moments of feeling in dreams that arise in sacred encounters. A recent presentation to the Yale Alumni Association gives a good sense of the approach that he’s developed after eighteen years of experience working with dream clients: https://youtu.be/KFQCBU9U7ik Find him at kamenetz.com and thenaturaldream.com Twitter: @Jewinthelotus, Instagram: @rodgerkam, Tiktok: @kamenetz, FaceBook: Rodger.Kamenetz, YouTube: https://bit.ly/RodgerKYouTube Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science. Hogwarts Live from the 40th Annual IASD Dream Conference
Why do we go to all the trouble and expense to come to a conference anyway? I ask six dreamers what they find here and the answers vary: family, inspiration, friendship, understanding, plus going to conference is like going to Hogwarts! My guests are Victoria Rabinowe, Curt Hoffman, Marcia Emery, and Bob Krumhansl in the first half, and Linda Schiller and Lauren Schneider (with a reprise from Victoria) in the second. The conversation ranges on from my original question and includes topics like why are dreamers considered airy fairy when my dreamer friends are the most grounded people I know? And, where do the images come from anyway? I apologize for rough audio in the first 30 minutes! Skip ahead if you want to, or take a listen all the way through. Nightmares Demystified with Dr. Leslie Ellis
Nightmares: what’s their cause and cure? Our guest is clinician and dream demystifier, Dr. Leslie Ellis. Nightmares seem to be caused by anything upsetting whether in recent life or from long ago. Luckily, we don’t need to know what is causing a nightmare to work with it. Dreaming helps us metabolize emotions but nightmares can wake us up, interrupting the process. She describes a dream as a picture of our current or habitual nervous system condition (ala Eugene Gendlin). It can be helpful to rescript the dream or change the ending in an environment where we feel calm and safe. Dr. Ellis describes bias control and aspects of Stephen Porges’s polyvagal theory. BIO: Leslie Ellis is author of A Clinician’s Guide to Dream Therapy and offers online dreamwork certification to mental health professionals. Her experiential approach to engaging with dreams is based on focusing, an approach that privileges the body’s felt sense in the exploration of dreams. Developed by Eugene Gendlin, a focusing approach includes finding help in a dream and bias control. Leslie has expanded on this method to develop an embodied approach to treating nightmares, and recently published a paper in the journal Dreaming on nightmares and the nervous system. Dreaming and Enchantment with Writer Andy Couturier
My personal writing mentor, Andy Couturier, is helping me through the birth of my book about dreaming. Andy is also an avid dreamer in his own right, and he has lots of say about using dreams to deepen our enchantment and sense of magic in the world. We start with Andy sharing an early childhood dream of bookcases full of presents which he thinks of as the gifts of life to come. He says that dreams are a welcome non-utilitarian part of my life and quotes from Thomas Moore’s book The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life. We talk about the Abundance of Less by our guest and The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard. Andy recommends that we ask questions of our dreams without needing to answer them. He also shares some writing exercises from his book Writing Open the Mind designed to access the subconscious and describes the logistics of his self-organized dream group encouraging you, the listener, to set up one of your own. We take a call from a widow in Aptos whose husband died three years ago. After an absence of three years, now he is starting to appear in her dreams. We also take a call from Elizabeth in Bellingham who says that her dreams are guiding her as she writes her memoir, and she ends by asking a provocative question about how we are each placed in time which inspires Andy to share one of his precognitive dreams. Sign up for Andy’s contact list to stay in the loop about the new course he will offer later this summer called “Dreaming and Writing,” or to sign up for one of his Book Completion groups. BIO: Mentor of hundreds of completed books and author of Writing Open the Mind and The Abundance of Less, Andy Couturier is a writing coach and an engaged dreamer. During waking hours he is also guiding Katherine’s book creation journey using innovative writing techniques that access subconscious processes. He walks the line between dreams and the waking subconscious, practicing an open-minded curiosity and amazement toward dreams, and he likes to welcome all the dream parts without making a story of them, but including them all and giving them all voice. Shamanic Dream Journeying with Robert Moss
It’s April Fool’s Day, and we are talking with dreaming’s biggest trickster Robert Moss. Moss is a shamanic dreamer and author of over two dozen books. Today talk about traveling without leaving home. Robert describes himself as a story teller who helps people find their story. He begins with the tale of what happened when he was pronounced dead at age 3 and about how dreaming is preparation for dying. We speak about the power of imagination and about the practice of living by synchronicity which he calls kairomancy. He urges us to remember to play. We take a dream from Steve Popp of Santa Cruz in which his dad offers him a horse which ultimately turns into a deer, and a call from Elizabeth from Bellingham who asks about how to stimulate more dreams, who mentions a dream of her own about a blue horse. We also take a call from Beth Ann from the Central Valley who asks about how to find humor and playfulness around dark dreams. Synchronistically, she also mentions dreams about horses. Robert announces that he will lead a course called Adventures in Soul Travel which will be released on the Shift Network in May, BIO: Robert Moss has been a dream traveler since doctors pronounced him dead in a hospital in Tasmania when he was three years old. His School of Active Dreaming is a synthesis of modern dreamwork and ancient shamanic practices for journeying to realms beyond the physical. He leads adventures all over the world, including a three-year teacher training and popular online courses for the Shift Network. He is a New York Times bestselling novelist, poet, journalist, and independent scholar. His latest book is Growing Big Dreams: Manifesting Your Heart’s Desires through 12 Secrets of the Imagination. Dream Sharing and Empathy with Prof Mark Blagrove and Prof Julia Lockheart
Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, “Yes it does!” The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can’t recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Frued’s famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process. We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge. BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Since 2016 they have undertaken public Ullman dream discussions, with Julia simultaneously painting each dream as part of their DreamsID.com collaboration. The Octopus Movement with Perry Knoppert
When are ADHD and dyslexia assets instead of handicaps? When you are an octopus! Our guest today is Dr. Octopus himself, Perry Knoppert. We talk about about his nonlinear revolution called the Octopus Movement. Perry’s movement welcomes all out-of-the-box thinkers celebrating neurodiversity, multipotentiality and deep curiosity. We muse over how nonlinear dreams are, and Perry describes being nonlinear as like being on psychedelics all the time. Perry and Katherine explore several of his recent dreams from different angles. Perry describes how he has been experimenting with not needing to understand his dreams but has been finding it valuable to carry them around with him during the day. He wonders if perhaps they are often dramatic because there are so many things that we are not paying attention to during the day. He urges listeners to join his revolution. BIO: Perry Knoppert aka Dr. Octopus is a nonconformist, embodies the spirit of a life artist. Born in the free-spirited Netherlands, he sold lampshades with his father and experienced the diversity of the market. But Perry yearned for more and discovered the beauty of unexpected possibilities in Beijing, China. Embracing his ADHD energy, dyslexic learning style, and multi-tasking brain, Perry founded The Octopus Movement, a mycelium of nonlinear thinkers. The platform empowers out-of-the-box thinkers to unleash their unique talents and shape the world with their artful approach to life. Perry is a visionary, a trailblazer, and a true-life artist. Dream Inspired Music and Native American Sacred Sites with Curtiss Hoffman, PhD
Also can dreams open our minds to other consciousnesses? Our guest today is professor emeritus Curt Hoffman, PhD. Curt is an archeologist and an anthropologist. He starts by describing that several big dreams shared with colleagues inspired his interest in dreaming. Using Dreams in Therapy and also Dream Telepathy with Suzanne Maniss, PhD
DreamStar Free Online Counseling, using dreams in therapy and her experiences with dream telepathy. Our conversation this week is with Professor Suzanne Maniss of U Texas Rio Grande. We start out talking about how little clinical health workers learn about dreams which is similar to the small amount that medical doctors learn about nutrition. The dominant therapy mode is currently cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is geared toward controlling symptoms rather than shifting underlying causes. Suzanne describes this as a “whack a mole” approach. Suzanne describes her work with Scott Sparrow, PhD and how they teach graduate students to incorporate dreaming into therapy. You can apply for free sessions from these students and also take courses to learn about the technique at DreamStarInstitute.com. After the break we got more personal and speculative. Suzanne’s son Jeremy called in from Dallas and shared how they used to talk about his dreams on the way to school. Suzanne then shared an uncomfortable experience of dream telepathy. Finally, we took a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who synchronistically wanted to ask about dream telepathy and had clicked into the system before we started talking about it. BIO: Dr. Suzanne Maniss is professor and chair of the Department of Counseling at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Suzanne is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and first became interested in dreams during her graduate studies, as a result of which she spent ten years in Jungian analysis. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Maniss has found that students are very interested in dream work and has been able to share basic theories and techniques through elective courses and professional development workshops in the community. Most recently, she has collaborated with Dr. Scott Sparrow to bring these ideas to the students at U Texas, Rio Grande. Contact me if you’d like to get in touch with our guest. Sleep: Why You Need It and How to Get More of It, with Dr. Chris Winter
How can you dream well if you’re not sleeping well? Our guest today is neurologist and sleep specialist Dr. Chris Winter. Chris starts out talking about how he has always enjoyed sleeping and how that ultimately led him to a career as a sleep specialist. We sleep a third of our life and sleep affects all aspects of our waking life. We talk about “eight hours a night, every night”. Is that a myth or do sleep needs really fall on more of a bell curve? You might think you need less sleep than that, but is it really enough or are you just getting by? How do you feel during the day? Also falling asleep too quickly is a clue to being sleep deprived. We take a call from Susan from Novato who talks about enjoying waking up early, even sometimes as early as 3:30am. Dr. Winter talks about chronotypes and how they vary from person to person and with age. He speaks about dreaming as a marker for getting good sleep and that dreams can be a kind of sandbox for the mind. BIO: Dr. Christopher Winter is a neurologist and sleep specialist. Personal Alchemy with Kat Appleby
Can dreams trigger personal alchemy? We talk to Kat Appleby about her own process, which started with a dream fragment that triggered a major somatic experience which lasted for months and turned into an ancestral memory from an enslaved ancestor. Kat shares with us how, over the last few years, her dreams have led (and are leading) her through a process of learning about her own divinity. She shares dreams of water, fire, rage, snakes, dancing women and more snakes. We talk about cultivating a practice of growing to trust yourself and how you can use ritual to explore your own dreams. We also touch into the idea of the psychoid. BIO: Katrina Appleby was a Certified Professional Dreamworker and a Mentor for the Institute of Dream Studies. Since the age of four Kat has been aware of the importance and power of dreams and dreamt often about snakes. She finds that it is indeed quite normal to meet Gods, Goddesses and power animals in her dreams. Kat joins us today from the UK. She is passionate about working with people and their dreams, especially with those that feel that they have a bigger purpose and calling and are looking to their dreams to find out which direction to take. Biblical Dream Study with Carol Oschmann
What does the Bible teach us about how to understand our own dreams? In this Christmas Eve edition of the Dream Journal, we speak with Carol Oschman about her book, Biblical Dream Study. The Bible mentions dreams 134 times, yet the dreams of modern-life parishioners are rarely mentioned from the pulpit. Carol Oschmann shares with us practical advice about understanding our own dreams derived from looking at the way that the Biblical figures interpreted theirs. She shares many Bible dream stories including Jacob, Solomon and of course, Joseph and his famous interpretation of the dream of the seven fat cows being eaten up by the seven lean cows. For example, Carol suggests that we, like Jacob, turn and face the beings that are chasing us in our own dreams, either in the dream itself or in waking life imagination. She also defines what she calls “Golden Sword” dreams akin to Judas’ dream of being given a sword to defeat his enemies. These are dreams in which we are given tools to accomplish our goals. She gives examples of how she and others have been helped by ideas presented in dreams. We finish by touching on how dreams help with the grief of bereavement and Carol shares her own journey of recently losing her husband. BIO: Carol began her journey with dreams due to a spiritual awakening in 1985. She’s traveled and spoken across the country and in England, taught dream interpretation in a prison for three years, led several dream groups. The spiritual experience was so exciting, that’s all she wanted to talk about. Unfortunately the pastor in her Methodist church didn’t agree and asked her not to come back. This book “Biblical Dream Study” in a way is her answer to those Christians who don’t believe that God speaks to us in dreams. (Note that the correct way to pronounce Carol’s last name is “Osh-man”.) Egyptian Mysteries and Lucid Dreaming with Sarah Janes
Is there evidence to show that people were lucid dreaming in ancient times? Today’s guest is Sarah Janes. We’ll talk about her interests in ancient mysteries and her new book: Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne. Sarah describes how she has been lucid dreaming since a baby and often returns to the same dream places again and again. We talk about the Asklepion Dream Temple healing traditions including inductions that will maximize your chances of encountering gods and goddesses in dreams or their avatars including snakes or dogs. She speaks about Mnemosyne (pronounced knee-moss-in-nay) who was the mother of the Muses and served to guide the deceased to Hades. Drinking from her pool ensures remembrance. Sara describes several techniques to enhance dream recall including practicing by writing down a waking day as if it were a dream. She also speaks about cognitive enhancers that can increase the frequency of lucid dreaming and ends by describing her ongoing podcast releases and some of her many upcoming events. BIO: Sarah Janes is a hypnotherapist, a lucid dreamer and an studier of Egyptian antiquities. She hosts many online events, schools and podcasts regarding ancient mysteries. Her new book is called Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne which refers to the Greek goddess of memory, sense-making and eloquence. Mnemosyne is the archetypal deity of the Asklepion dream temple tradition. Sarah’s book explores the history and culture of the dream as medicine in the Western esoteric tradition and is designed to lead the reader on a self-initiatory journey inspired by the dream philosophies and sleep temple systems of our wisest ancient ancestors. Nightmares Demystified with Jason DeBord aka u/RadOwl
A conversation with an author of four books about dreaming, we talk about the ins and outs of nightmares and how to stop them. AKA RadOwl, our guest is Jason DeBord, moderator for the reddit page r/dreams. With over 200,000 members, it is by far the largest dream-sharing community in the world. Jason starts by talking about a 30-year ordeal that began as a nightmare when he was a child and ended with an exorcism by a shaman. As a way of dealing with nightmares, we speak about lucid dreaming and addressing the intelligence behind the dream. We also speak about trauma and how nightmares and other dreams start to evolve once we start to work with them. Jason suggests that the main cause for nightmares is a conflict between the conscious and unconscious minds. We take a call from Ronnie from Santa Cruz who tells about a friend who shared with him a dream about an owl. We end by musing about why dreams speak in symbols instead of more directly. BIO: J.M. Dream Gems with Jane Carleton
Dreams often bring simple moments of magic that can make all the difference, and every dream has hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. We talk today to dream guide and professional gemologist Jane Carleton. Jane describes how she knows when a person has found the right gem for them because their bodies change and their eyes light up. This is similar to dream work when an “Aha!” will light up a dreamer often without them being able to explain it. Jane shares stories about asking for waking life magic and about using talismans to help remember the dream. She also speaks about waking life inner voice experiences and shares a moment where that voice saved her during a carjacking. We take a call from Walter who shares an intense nightmare of a boy who is attacked by two giant gems. BIO. Jane E. Carleton, MA, GG holds two graduate degrees in Dream Studies, and Consciousness and Transformative Studies and has taught graduate courses on dreams at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Instead of puzzling over the meaning of your dreams, bring them to life with Natural Dreamwork. Katherine speaks with poet and author Rodger Kamenetz. He suggests a practice of exploring dreams which starts with counting your blessings. He also spoke about dreams as symbolic in the same way that poems are and about dreaming as a sacred encounter.
