Humanity at an Inflection Point with Christine Barrington

Will we make it to a safer age? Humanity balances between two paths: self-destruction or self-revelation. Our guest, Christine Barrington describes this critical inflection point and argues that dreams awaken us to the realm of purpose and meaning arguing that every one of us has much to contribute to the path of humanity. Christine begins with James Braid then outlines the complicated history of science and consciousness including how they got separated in the first place, culminating with the philosophy of positivism which is the belief nothing exists that cannot be verified. She notes in contrast that most of the giants of quantum theory were also mystics including Planck (mentioning his book Where Science is Going) and also Einstein, Schrödinger, Heisenberg, Bohr, and Pauli. On the thread of consciousness, she quotes Carl Jung and his work on the tension of the opposites and synchronicity, also Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ken Wilbur, and Joe Dispenza and the birth of neurophysiology and mindfulness. Christine brings it together talking about Thomas Campbell and his book My Big TOE and his “theory of everything,” which argues that consciousness is the basis for everything and that we are here on this planet to learn and evolve that consciousness, one person at a time. She plays a quote of his about how dreaming gives us information about our selves in that how we react in dreams is how we are. As we learn to be more living and present, then our dreams evolve too. Christine ends by sharing information about a conference put on by Campbell’s organization, the Center for the Unification of Science and Consciousness CUSAC.org, and the the symposium they will be hosting in September. BIO: Christine Barrington has worked as a psychotherapist and transformational coach and is a seeker who has invested years searching for answers underlying the challenges of human existence. From Shame to Self-Love with Bill St. Cyr

We speak with Bill St. Cyr starting with how common shame is and how the mean voices that we carry around make it hard for us to let in the love that’s all around us. Test taking in a dream is often about shame. Bill shares a dream in which he felt a deep sense acceptance when a dear friend tenderly put their forehead up against his. We talk about something called the entropic theory of the brain which draws parallels between the dreaming brain state and the brain on psychedelics and how they both can throw our brains into enough disarray that we come out of them in a new state. We take a call from Christine Barrington who shares a dream where she felt supported, and she speaks about how we all learn best through connection. She also defines a heretic as one who choses. Bill closes by encouraging us to bring tenderness to our life’s journey every step of the way. To learn more and to contact Bill and to learn about his coaching and classes, see his website at StudentsoftheDream.com Books we talked about include Pema Chodron’s Start Where You Are and Lisa Barrett’s How Emotions are Made. BIO: Bill St. Cyr is a devoted student of the dream and of the process of coming into deep consciousness in the face of the trauma and alienation that is so endemic in our culture. Bill has over 10 years experience working with dreamers and teaching practitioners the practice of Embodied Dreamwork. He has presented and facilitated over 75 workshops, retreats and conferences throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Inner Wisdom Figures with Charles Tack

Do voices in your head guide your waking life? Inner Wisdom Figures and Internal Family Systems. Inner exploration with today’s guest Charles Tack. Charles describes Internal Family Systems as a way of building relationships with the different voices inside ourselves, many of whom came from the cultural and familial messages that we grew up with. He then describes what he calls Inner Wisdom Figures, which are inner characters who seem to be a few steps of development ahead of where we are in waking life. Charles describes how to engage with both of these kinds of inner voices through what Jung describes as active imagination. Charles also describes how he uses I Ching as part of inner work, and we end with a discussion of how to move toward joy and radiance. BIO: After years of facilitating groups and coaching clients to improve, Charles realized that he was only superficially successful. More importantly, he didn’t enjoy what he advocated for. That began a decades-long inquiry that led to an ever-increasing appreciation for our child-like aspects, greater access to holistic, wisdom influences and more embodied joy. Love and Power with PhDs Marsha Hudson and Norman Brown

What does the #metoo movement have to do with the climate crisis? And how can dreams help both? Today meet Marsha Hudson and Norman Brown. We’ll talk about Love and Power and how better emotional versatility can improve relationships and reduce our impact on the planet… and on each other. They describe the nine basic emotions and the value of naming them highlighting shame and contempt as well as excitement/interest. Dreaming, Psychedelics, and Primary Consciousness with Steve Elfrink

A conversation about psychedelics with holistic facilitator Steve Elfrink of Om Terra Psychedelics. How dreams and psychedelics shift consciousness and help resolve trauma. He describes primary consciousness as the body and the subconscious while secondary consciousness is everyday awareness. Primary consciousness is present all the time, but is deeply accessed through dreaming and psychedelics. Steve recommends what he calls a psycholytic dose to help get out of a loop of unresolved emotions, but he cautions that a psychedelic session is just the beginning of a healing journey. In the second half, Steve shares his own riveting journey with psychedelics and Max asks where one can find psychedelic assistance. Deep Lucid Dreaming with Clare Johnson, PhD

Guide your dreams with the power of thought and intention. Explore creativity, healing, sex, grief, and the nature of time and space. Today we talk to Lucid Dreaming expert Dr. Clare Johnson. Clare describes an intense dream which spurred her to write her next book which is currently in the editing phase. She says that dreams, lucid or not, demonstrate that we are in partnership with our own subconscious. She tells of lucid dreams in which she questions the nature of dreams, energy, and even of matter. We then get into a conversation about nightmares: what they are for and some ideas about dealing with them in the dream itself or in the waking state. After the break, we take a call from Holmes from New York who tells about a dream where he is with a pastor but can’t hear what he says. The pastor has a spider on his head which looks right at Holmes and gets bigger and bigger. Clare suggests he go back into the dream if he wants to find out what the pastor said. He also tells us he has many sex dreams which Clare says is sometimes related to spiritual awakening. Homes finishes by telling us how a waking life meditation allowed him to let go of his fear of dream whales. We take a second call from John from Santa Cruz about how he often drifts in and out of dreaming and wakefulness. Clare ends by talking about how raising our quality of awareness can improve the consciousness that we take with us when we die. Go to Clare’s webpage for a 50% discount on her popular 30-Day Power of Dreams class using the code word “dream”. BIO: Dr. Clare Johnson is a global lucidity teacher and a pioneer in the field. Stumbling Toward the Light with Bill Judge

Embracing life’s mysteries. Using shadow exploration, Tai Chi, and dreamwork retired professor Bill Judge is on a personal journey guided by his dreams. Bill describes some highlights of his spiritual journey so far including a trip to Nepal, a sailing trip across the Atlantic, Jungian analysis, and parenting his two adopted children. Bill shares a dream which he had leading up to the interview he calls Mountain Joy Ride and other dreams including a series he calls the Seduction Series and the Concrete Wave. He recommends a book called Mindful Dreaming by David Gordon. We speak his views about moving from “role to soul”, from the do-it-all phase of life to a more contemplative phase. We also speak about shadow manifests when we overreact in waking life and about how dreams assist in our ego death which dissolves shadow. We take a question by Max about his experience in the men’s movement. Bill recommends the work of Robert Bly and Illuman.org, an organization created by Richard Rohr, and mentions his professional book about leadership called The Leader’s Shadow. We take an email question from Charles about using active imagination with dreams and finish by talking about his current spiritual path which involves Tai Chi and what he calls unlearning. BIO: Bill Judge is a recently retired college professor who is shifting from “role to soul.” This shift has been greatly aided by his dream work. While always a curious adventurer, his current focus is living more in the present moment, exploring his shadow, playing Tai Chi, serving in the men’s movement, and embracing life’s mysteries. Dream Sharing and Empathy with Mark Blagrove and Julia Lockheart

Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, “Yes it does!” The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book. This is a replay from a popular episode recorded in March. Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can’t recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Freud’s famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process. We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge. BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Spiritual Journeying with Royce Fitts, PhD

Sometimes we have to wander the world to find out what lies in our own soul. Our guest Royce Fitts, D Min used a multi-week solo stravage on the oldest road in Europe as his chance to reflect on his history, on social consciousness, and on spiritual wisdom. Royce starts by defining the word stravage (“strah-vegg”) as an aimless, defiant, and profound wandering which is a spiritual theme in his new book, The Geography of the Soul. We talk about Royce’s multi-week solo stravage along the Ridgeway National Trail as a metaphor for the spiritual journey that we each are on. Raised on a farm in a small town of western Nebraska, Royce eventually left the conservative religion that he had become a minister of to become a spiritual counselor, a practitioner of dreamwork, and an adherent of process theology. We take a call from Julie from Denver who shares a dream about butterflies emerging from a globe in the living room of her home which we look at as a story of transformation. BIO: Royce Fitts is an author, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and a certified dream worker. He holds a doctorate in ministry. Metaphors and Miniatures with Leah Hodari, LMHC

What is sandtray work and how does working with metaphor benefit us neurologically? We speak with Leah Hodari about applying sandtray work to dreamwork. Leah starts out by talking about the history of sandtray and how it deviates from the Jungian practice of sand play. She describes how all aspects of the therapy encourage therapeutic bilateral integration, allowing trauma, which lives in the right hemisphere, to emerge and be processed by the more verbal left hemisphere. We talk about metaphor in sandtray work and in waking life in that humans commonly experience that one object can hold many different meanings. Leah talks about the power of using sandtray to explore and modify dreams and lists several questions the dreamer can ask themselves to deepen their dreamwork. In the second half, Leah talks about how she got started with this work. We take an email from Rachel who asks about talking in her sleep and a question from Max who shares his experience that both he and his son find that playing with and creating miniatures can be be relaxing and helps with focus. A New Kind of Hero’s Journey, Dream-Inspired Creativity with Author Donna Glee Williams

We all know that dreams can galvanize your creativity. Today we meet an author who has published three dream-inspired fantasy novels which seek to reimagine the hero’s journey. Author Donna Glee Williams, PhD is our guest and her latest book is called The Night Field. Plus music by Lynn Morgan Rosser. Donna Glee describes her 17 year mentorship with Jeremy Taylor which began as an exploration of an ongoing dream theme of difficulty getting to water. She also speaks of dreams that are gifts for others and shares that she recently wrote a story based on another’s dream. When published it will have the dreamer as co-author. She describes using dreams to inspire creativity by starting with the question, “If you were to do something to honor this dream, what would it be?” She then speaks about how her books embody a new kind of Hero’s Journey more appropriate for a post-patriarchal world than the traditional Joseph Campbell formulation, a new paradigm that gets away from individualism and invites co-heroes. After the break we take a call from John of Santa Cruz who describes research showing that people who play music access different portions of their brain than those who don’t. Our engineer and music-creator Rick adds that music is a high-bandwidth form of transmitting nonverbal information. We then take a call from Lynn Rosser of Asheville of North Carolina who has created music to go with Donna Glee’s new novel. We play part of the piece called Bridges. You can find Lynn at LynnMorganRosser.com and on Spotify and other platforms. Donna Glee suggests that listeners go to ko-fi.com/lynnmorganrosser to support her. We then talking about using fantasy to address real-world issues including addressing problems with pesticides which are portrayed, but never explicitly mentioned, in The Night Field which emerged from her work with the Eco Tipping Points Project which can be found at EcoTippingPoints.org. Donna Glee ends by reading the opening paragraphs from her new novel. BIO: When I first met Jeremy Taylor, I was already a writer but—other than my doctoral dissertation—I’d never written in any long form. During my 17 years of dreamwork with him, I wrote three novels seeded by dreams. His fingerprints are particularly bright on my latest, The Night Field. A Seth-Inspired Alternative Sleep Schedule with David Cielak

Trouble sleeping through the night? Maybe you are on your way to a superior sleep schedule which could enhance your creativity, flexibility, and dream recall. We talk with David Cielak about what Seth has to say about sleep and dreaming. Dave recommends five hours of sleep at night preceded by the important suggestion that upon awakening I will be refreshed and ready for the day. You are also encouraged to nap as needed. This sleep schedule enhances dream recall and can lead to more lucid dreaming and was inspired by the writings of Jane Roberts who channeled the entity Seth. He recommends using the following incubation “As I sleep I will attract from inner reality the very best possible events in all areas of my life.” The Seth materials suggest that our waking reality is determined by our choices in our dream state. Dreams help us change the beliefs that dictate our waking life behavior. What Dreams Have to Say about Reality with Tina Tau

Is waking life really a kind of theater which we make up along the way? The transformative potential of dreamwork, today with author and certified dreamworker, Tina Tau. Tina shares a dream in which she struggles to swim upstream, then suddenly stands up and realizes the water is not so deep. We speak about how this highlights that our understanding of what’s true in any moment, waking or sleeping, may be radically altered by our expectations. She shares another dream in which she notices that a giant bird seems to be operated by wires like a puppet and asks, “Who is big enough to operate that puppet?” Tina describes how this dream opened up for her the realization that much of reality is staged like a play. After the break, Gary from Oregon calls with a dream including three planetariums. We take a second call from Kristen from Virginia who shares a dream that is one of a series of dreams about her ex-partner. We finish with a few words about asking for dreams to help with the climate change crisis and a description of her recent book “Ask for Horses”. BIO: Tina Tau is an adventurer, writer and dreamworker, living in Portland Oregon. She is the author of the recent memoir, Ask for Horses: Memoir of a Dream-Guided Life. Anima Dreams, Personal Neurobiology, and Hispanic Identity with John Valenzuela, PhD

An anima dream series and personal neurobiology. Also Dreams about love and, just in time for Hispanic heritage month, Mexican American male identity formation. A conversation with John Valenzuela, PhD. John describes that the anima and animus figures we meet in our dreams are autonomous spiritual beings AND also parts of us and that the gender distinction is probably a cultural artifact. We talk about the distinction between when a dream figure is a someone we know from waking life vs a stranger. John describes a few dream from his own anima series and talks about the way dreams reveal our “personality landscape.” He talks about the nine domains of integration from the work of Dan Siegal and says that dreams are helping with this integration. Those oh-so-common dreams of trying to find something are probably our own brains in the process of integration. We take a call from Rochelle from San Diego who shares a dream series about her teeth falling out while on a date. We end by talking about John’s research into dreams and identity formation in Mexican American males. BIO: John Valenzuela, earned his Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Clinical Psychology program. Would you let a bot interpret your dreams? Should you? We speak with Joanna of Blue Lotus Queendom about the pleasures and pitfalls of using AI with dreams. Helplessness, Trauma, and Nightmares with Dr. Greg Mahr

Can we predict who will develop PTSD? Our guest, Dr. Greg Mahr, studies patients with acute trauma, and he discovered that their dreams in the days and weeks after their injury suggest who will recover fully and who will be mired in PTSD months later. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that occurs after trauma marked by intense nightmares and increased risk of suicide, but only about 30% of those traumatized go on to develop PTSD. In Dr. Mahr’s acute trauma center in Detroit, he interviews victims of car accidents and assaults and asks about their dreams in the days immediately after the trauma and finds that experiences of helplessness in their dreams and during their trauma correlate with the development of PTSD. After the traumatic event, nightmares tend to replicate the event exactly, but changes soon develop in those who recover in which the person finds some agency and the dreams eventually start to have happier endings. This mimics the process of IRT, Image Rehearsal Therapy, in which people can deliberately change their nightmares by imagining new versions of the troubling dreams. Dr. Mahr speculates that one of the purposes of dreaming is to encourage us to talk about our traumas and that they help us develop a narrative about the event. We take a question from Amy about how to bring up the topic of nightmares with a doctor and end by talking about post-traumatic growth and the idea that dreams are messages from ourselves. BIO: Greg Mahr MD is a psychiatrist, a teacher and a writer. He is director of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and is on faculty at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dream work and Jungian depth psychology have been long standing passions for Greg, and at over 5000 dreams, he has one of the most extensive collection of personal dreams in the world. Guiding Spirits Home with Jeanne Van Bronkhorst

Companioning the dying through lucid dreams. Our guest shares some of her experiences of psychopompic dreaming. Starting when she was 9 or 10 she would dream of being in a classroom where she learned how to change the dream. Several years later she describes her first experience of helping a dying person happened several years later when she found herself in a dream falling together with a woman who was terrified. She was able to slow their fall by dreaming up first n umbrella then a parachute letting the woman land softly in a place where friends were waiting to greet her. She shares several such stories (including one in which she was awake but meditating) and says that in the liminal space between life and death, our dreaming muscles are essential when the physical world falls away. Jeanne describes some of the work of Allan Kellehear in his book Experiences Near Death: Beyond Medicine and Religion, saying that near death experiences vary across cultures, but the one thing in common is that the dying person is always being helped as they approach that threshold. Rick shares a dream in which one of his beloved dogs is killed, and Max asks whether Jeanne feels prepared when she has these experiences of if she is just winging it. We muse over Tibetan Dream Yoga and the idea that we are more open to these liminal spaces when we are dreaming and marveling over the rich variety of metaphors for dying that people experience, and end by talking about how to enhance emotional connections with those who are dying. Jeanne also appeared on the Dream Journal in August 2021. That conversation can be found here: https://ksqd.org/dreams-at-the-end-of-life-with-jeanne-van-bronkhorst/ BIO: Jeanne Van Bronkhorst, MA, MSW, worked with people in hospice care for ten years. Doing the Opposite with Chris Cunniffe

When should you do the opposite of what you usually do? Today we speak about lucid dreaming, shadow work, and dream yoga with Chris Cunniffe. Chris had been a lawyer for 8 years when he had a dream which nudged him onto a more spiritual path. In the dream, Chris was at a Milli Vanilli conference which led him to wonder about what part of his life was a false front. Chris urges us to consider “doing the opposite”. For example: dreaming is meaningless; consider that it might be meaningful. Nightmares are bad and should be avoided; perhaps they are helpful. I should run away from that monster in my dream; maybe I should turn towards it. Chris gives examples of using this idea with shadow dream figures. We then speak about treating waking life as a lucid dream including connecting with those cartoon-like figures we encounter over and over. I got some personal ahas from this discussion about my own trouble delegating tasks. We end by talking about the idea that some of the people we meet in our dreams are counterparts or soulmates. BIO: Chris is a graduate of Holy Cross College (1993) and Harvard Law School (1996). He has a career background as an entrepreneur in both law and real estate. In 2015, Chris founded Lucid Coaching, LLC, as a creative vehicle for offering coaching services to clients and for publishing articles and videos about dreams, personal development, and spirituality. Chris currently serves as a board member and volunteer facilitator at Bliss Spiritual Co-op, a Charleston based retreat center, where he facilitates discussion groups about dreams and other topics. We go deep into dream incubation: what it is, what kind of questions to ask, how to set up a meaningful ritual to improve your changes for success, and how to recognize and work with the answer. We also talk about nightmares which Machiel describes as trying to wake us up to something in the unconscious that is ready to emerge into the conscious mind. The Natural Dream, a Rodger Kamenetz Replay

Instead of puzzling over the meaning of your dreams, bring them to life with Natural Dreamwork. This show originally aired last Fall. Katherine speaks with poet and author Rodger Kamenetz. He suggests a practice of exploring dreams which starts with counting your blessings. He also spoke about dreams as symbolic in the same way that poems are and about dreaming as a sacred encounter. We take calls from Kat from Delaware who dreams about a baby with a too long neck and from Maureen who dreams about waiting for her boyfriend by two bridges. BIO: Rodger Kamenetz is the author of 15 books of poetry and prose. His book The Jew in the Lotus is an international best-seller. He is Professor Emeritus at LSU where he founded the MFA program in creative writing and the Jewish Studies minor. He is the founder of Natural Dreamwork, an international group of twenty dreamwork practitioners who approach the dream as a natural resource for healing and spiritual growth. The History of Last Night’s Dream was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series. The Natural Dreamwork approach is to avoid interpretation and focus instead on bringing to life rich moments of feeling in dreams that arise in sacred encounters. A recent presentation to the Yale Alumni Association gives a good sense of the approach that he’s developed after eighteen years of experience working with dream clients: https://youtu.be/KFQCBU9U7ik Find him at kamenetz.com and thenaturaldream.com Twitter: @Jewinthelotus, Instagram: @rodgerkam, Tiktok: @kamenetz, FaceBook: Rodger.Kamenetz, YouTube: https://bit.ly/RodgerKYouTube Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science.
