Ep 563Mandy Froehlich (@froehlichm) - Don't Just Set Goals; Make Plans
Mandy Froelich spends much of her time consulting with school districts and post-secondary institutions in the effective use of technology to support great teaching, mental health support for educators, and how to create organizational change in education. Her first book, The Fire Within: Lessons from defeat that have ignited a passion for learning, discusses mental health awareness for teachers. Her second book, Divergent EDU, is based on an organizational structure she developed to support teachers in innovative and divergent thinking. Her third book, based on educator engagement and mental health, is titled Reignite the Flames which has a companion guide/workbook titled The Educator’s Matchbook.Mandy is passionate about learning and her profession in general, but her two favorite components of her position are being able to provide professional learning opportunities and present/keynote conferences. She believes that by providing these opportunities to teachers, she is in turn able to reach many more students and ultimately affect their learning experiences. Also, on a personal side note, Mandy was insanely afraid of public speaking throughout her life until she reached college. At that time she took multiple public speaking courses to try to get over her fear of speaking in front of people to the point where it was silly for her not to declare it as her minor because she had so many credits. The ability to get up in front of adults (which is not the same as getting up in front of kids) and not bawl like a baby is one of Mandy’s accomplishments that she’s most proud of. Just another reason she likes providing professional learning opportunities, presenting, and keynoting. At home you’ll usually find her talking to her family or spending copious amounts of time telling her dog she’s pretty. Mandy loves coffee and has a hard time being friends with people who don’t. Mostly, she has devoted her life to finding what makes her happy…and seeing others happy fills her cup. ______________________________________________________________________ The Edupreneur: Your Blueprint To Jumpstart And Scale Your Education BusinessYou’ve spent years in the classroom, leading PD, designing curriculum, and transforming how students learn. Ep 548Dr. Heather Lyon (@LyonsLetters) - Author Talks: Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal)
I've written the book, Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal): Mind-Changing Theory and Strategies that Will Create Real Engagement because "engagement" is a term used so often in education but not one that often has a shared understanding between any two people. This book creates a common understanding. My second book, The BIG Book of Engagement Strategies: A Continuation of the Book Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal), has over 50 more strategies including ones from a dozen different educators to help educators find even more ways to help students engage in learning.I came to education because I wanted to write but needed a back-up plan because I knew I couldn't become a well-paid, famous author overnight and I didn't want to live with my parents for the rest of my life. I was fortunate because my cooperating teacher was inspirational and I realized I loved teaching. I became a certified Reading Specialist after completing my Master's degree in education at the University at Buffalo, and prior to that my Bachelor of Arts in English from Alfred University. Finally, I received my Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University at Buffalo. In terms of my work history, I am an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology for a suburban school district in WNY. Prior to this, I was the Director of Elementary Education in a large suburban school district. Some additional highlights of my career include my work as an English Teacher, Staff Developer, Principal, Director of Instruction, and Superintendent. In each position, I was known for my leadership among students, faculty, and staff, and my drive toward excellence for the entire school community. I am also a very proud wife and mother who values the importance of work/life balance (which I'm still working on). My husband and I have three children, who make us smile and teach us the importance of patience and humor! ______________________________________________________________________ The Edupreneur: Your Blueprint To Jumpstart And Scale Your Education BusinessYou’ve spent years in the classroom, leading PD, designing curriculum, and transforming how students learn. Ep 546Komal Minhas (@komalminhas) - (Re-released Bonus Episode) - The Long Game
From Komal:Now, let me share with you a critical time of my life, that really helped me cement this work as my path in life.In 2016, I produced a documentary film, Dream, Girl, about female entrepreneurs that landed me on Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul 100 list. The film premiered at the Obama White House and I shared my story as part of a White House Council on Women and Girls initiative. That same year, I was diagnosed with a very rare form of skin cancer. A few months later, I suffered a neurological illness that forced me to leave my start-up and relocate my life in a matter of days.Amidst all of the chaos, I have managed to overcome these illnesses, rebuild my life, and lead an impact-driven career by continuing to show up for myself, day in and day out.I’ve learned that I don’t need to prioritize my professional goals over my personal wellbeing. I can be grounded and healthy and resilient as I build towards my ambitions and dreams. In fact, I require the former to have a career that’s actually sustainable and doesn’t lead me to hit walls and burn out over and over again. ______________________________________________________________________ The Edupreneur: Your Blueprint To Jumpstart And Scale Your Education BusinessYou’ve spent years in the classroom, leading PD, designing curriculum, and transforming how students learn. Without an MBA or formal financial training, she quit full-time academic medicine in 2017 to create her own career through a blend of per-diem contracts, locum tenens assignments, telemedicine, Veteran disability exams (yes, a pediatrician seeing adults!), medical expert witness work, and even establishing her own medical aesthetics practice in Southern California. After watching her colleagues suffer under the abusive demands that full-time, hospital-based employment in 2020 imposed on them, Dr. Lawrence-Reid developed the Doctoring Differently curriculum in order to give Physicians permission to choose themselves and transform their individual passions and expertise into gratifying careers with increased income, tremendous freedom, and enhanced quality of life. Dr. Lawrence-Reid is a proud Boston-area native currently based in San Diego, California. She attended Wake Forest University, University of Massachusetts Medical School, and she completed a pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York.
